Convergence of spherical averages for actions of Fuchsian Groups

Pointwise convergence of spherical averages is proved for a measure-preserving action of a Fuchsian group. The proof is based on a new variant of the Bowen-Series symbolic coding for Fuchsian groups that, developing a method introduced by Wroten, simultaneously encodes all possible shortest paths representing a given group element. The resulting coding is self-inverse, giving a reversible Markov chain to which methods previously introduced by the first author for the case of free groups may be applied.

Spatial limit theorem for interval exchange transformations

We prove a spatial limit theorem for generic interval exchange transformations (IETs): for a generic IET the normalized ergodic sums of a sufficiently regular (e.g., Lipschitz) function have the same asymptotic behavior of distributions as the behaviour of ergodic integrals for a generic translation flow on a flat surface, described by A. Bufetov.

Cesaro convergence of spherical averages for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups

Cesaro convergence of spherical averages is proven for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups. Convergence in the mean is established for functions in $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, and pointwise convergence for functions in $L^\infty$. In particular, for measure-preserving actions of word hyperbolic groups (in the sense of Gromov) we obtain Cesaro convergence of spherical averages with respect to any symmetric set of generators.
