Laser Synchronisation Over One Hundred Kilometers With Stability at Picosecond Scale

Large-scale systems, such as very large accelerators used for fundamental research, require the implementation of precise timing and synchronization systems over distances of several kilometers. Femtosecond synchronisation has been reached by the implementation of costly and complex clock distribution systems. However, many devices, such as accelerator diagnostics or detectors for physics at colliders, only require picosecond stability and, in some cases, similar accuracy. An approach that is based on the CERN White Rabbit protocol, deployed on an electronic system capable of generating arbitrary frequencies with Hertz precision, is proposed here. Results of performance tests for the synchronization of a laser system, typically employed as a diagnostic for electron/positron beam polarimetry in accelerators, are provided in this Paper. We demonstrate that the system can synchronize a pulsed laser with picosecond stability over one hundred kilometers on the short-term. The long-term stability over half a day is found to be of 5.5~ps for the 100~km link. The accuracy of the phase difference corresponding to $\pm 20$~ps is obtained. This work paves the way for the deployment of White-Rabbit-based synchronization systems for accelerator components, such as lasers, but also for large-scale detectors.

PCIe400 generic readout board qualification test

The PCIe400 is a generic readout board designed for high-throughput data acquisition in future high-energy physics experiments. It interfaces up to 48 bidirectional links supporting custom protocols from 1 to 26 Gbps to modern back-end systems providing up to 400 Gbps bandwidth. The board is developed as a technological demonstrator for the LHCb Upgrade II, which foresees an aggregated throughput of approximately 200 Tbps. In addition to increased bandwidth, the PCIe400 targets deterministic clock distribution to front-end electronics. At a maximum instantaneous luminosity of $1.5~\times~10^{34}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$, up to 40 proton-proton interactions per bunch crossing are expected in LHCb Upgrade II. The adoption of 4D tracking detectors with time resolutions down to 20 ps motivates clock distribution with phase determinism below 10 ps peak-to-peak across large-scale systems exceeding 2000 nodes. This paper presents the qualification of the PCIe400 prototype board, focusing on high-bandwidth interfaces, including next-generation QSFP112 links, and phase-deterministic clock distribution.

Study of laser-beam arrival time synchronization towards sub-picosecond stability level

A precise synchronization between laser pulse and electron beam arrival time is essential for achieving sub-picosecond stability in modern accelerator facilities. In this work, a Low-Level RF system architecture combined with White Rabbit based timing system has been tested through a collaboration between KEK (Japan) and CNRS/IN2P3, IJClab (France). The setup combines a frequency standard generator, an IDROGEN carrier board with an embedded White Rabbit node, and SkyWorks synthesizers of different form factors to distribute phase-locked clock signals over telecommunication fiber. Phase noise power spectral density measurements were performed at several RF sub-harmonics to confirm synchronization performance. These results demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the White Rabbit-IDROGEN synchronization scheme for large-scale accelerators, including applications to laser-based diagnostics.
