Galois representations ramified at one prime via relative deformation theory

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $\mathbf{G}/\mathbb Z$ be a split connected reductive group with $\operatorname{dim} Z(\mathbf{G})\leq1$. Assume that a split maximal torus of $\mathbf{G}$ admits a cocharacter whose pairing with every simple root is odd, and impose an explicit root-theoretic condition on the reduction of $\mathrm{Lie}(\mathbf{G}^{\mathrm{der}})$ modulo $p$. We construct infinitely many continuous representations $\rho:G_{\{p\}}\longrightarrow\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ which are unramified at every finite prime different from $p$ and whose images contain a principal congruence subgroup of $\mathbf G^{\mathrm{der}}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$. When the center has dimension one, the representations may be chosen to have open image in $\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$. The construction continues the author's earlier work on $\mathrm{GL}_n$-valued representations ramified at one prime, but replaces the residual unobstructedness used there by a relative lifting argument. For $\mathbf{G}=\mathrm{GL}_n$ all the required root-theoretic conditions are automatic for every odd prime. We therefore obtain, for every odd $p$ and every $n>1$, infinitely many representations $G_{\{p\}}\to\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ with open image. In particular, this removes the weak Vandiver-type hypothesis occurring in the author's previous work, as well as the restriction $p\geq7$ in that construction.

Cyclotomic norm congruences for zeta values and modular $L$-values

We study congruences between special values of zeta functions and modular $L$-functions in cyclotomic towers. The underlying mechanism is an integral norm congruence for finite-level Iwasawa-theoretic elements, which becomes stronger as one ascends the tower. In the $\mathrm{GL}_1$ setting, this gives congruences for Dedekind zeta values over totally real fields, with applications to higher $K$-groups, generalized Bernoulli numbers, and Euler-Poincar\'e characteristics. In the $\mathrm{GL}_2$ setting, we use Mazur-Tate elements and their distribution relations to control the primitive twisted special values appearing at each cyclotomic level. Via Artin formalism, these give congruences for the corresponding base-change $L$-values over successive cyclotomic fields.

Greenberg's $\mu=0$ conjecture for lisse sheaves over global function fields

Let $K$ be a global function field of characteristic $p>0$ and $\ell\neq p$ be a prime number. We study Selmer groups over a $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-extension $K_\infty/K$. For a lisse $\mathbb Z_\ell$-sheaf we prove that the Pontryagin dual of the associated Selmer group is a finitely generated torsion module over the Iwasawa algebra and has $\mu$-invariant equal to zero. This gives a positive-characteristic, prime to $p$, analogue of Greenberg's $\mu=0$ conjecture. Our result applies in particular to abelian varieties, fine Selmer groups, and adjoint representations. We also prove an analogue of the weak Leopoldt conjecture in this context over $K_\infty$, and deduce that the framed deformation ring of a residual representation is a formal power series ring. The same conclusion holds for the unframed deformation ring if the residual representation has no non-scalar endomorphisms.

Average divisibility in character tables of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$

Let $q$ range over odd prime powers and let $G_q=\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Fix a prime number $\ell$. Motivated by work of Peluse and Soundararajan on Miller's conjecture for character tables of symmetric groups, we study the proportion of entries in the character table of $G_q$ which are not divisible by $\ell$, in the sense of divisibility in the ring of algebraic integers. We prove that $N_\ell(q)=\frac{q^4}{2}+O_\epsilon(q^{3+\epsilon})$ for every $\epsilon>0$, where $N_\ell(q)$ denotes the number of entries which are not divisible by $\ell$. We also show that the number of zero entries is $\frac{q^4}{2}+O_\epsilon(q^{3+\epsilon})$. Consequently, the proportion of all entries not divisible by $\ell$ tends to $1/2$, while the proportion of nonzero entries not divisible by $\ell$ tends to $1$. This differs significantly from the symmetric-group case, where almost every character-table entry is divisible by any fixed prime. We also prove an angular equidistribution result for the nonzero character values as $q\to\infty$. We show that the arguments become equidistributed in $[0,2\pi]$. This proves an analogue of Miller's question on the distribution of signs among the nonzero entries in character tables of symmetric groups.

Asymptotic Vanishing of Stiefel--Whitney Classes for $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$

We study the asymptotic behavior of Stiefel--Whitney classes of irreducible orthogonal representations of the finite general linear groups $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Building on recent formulas expressing these classes in terms of character values at elements of order dividing $2$, we relate questions about characteristic classes to problems of $2$-adic divisibility of character values. For fixed odd $q$, we show that as $n \to \infty$, the values of irreducible orthogonal characters become highly divisible by powers of $2$ for almost all representations. As a consequence, the proportion of irreducible orthogonal representations with trivial first and second Stiefel--Whitney classes tends to $1$, and if $q \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$, the same holds for the fourth Stiefel--Whitney class. In particular, almost all orthogonal representations are spinorial in the large rank limit. In contrast, when the rank is fixed and $q \to \infty$, the behavior is markedly different. Focusing on $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$, we show that the second Stiefel--Whitney class vanishes with limiting probability $3/8$ among irreducible orthogonal representations.

Multivariable automatic arrays and transcendence

We study real numbers defined by multidimensional automatic arrays weighted by multiplicatively independent bases. Let $a_1, \dots, a_r\geq 2$ be integers such that $\log a_1, \dots, \log a_r$ are $\mathbb Q$-linearly independent. Given bounded automatic sequences $(p_n(i))_{n\geq 0}$ with $i=1, \dots , r$ and a function $f:\mathbb Z^r\rightarrow \mathbb Z$, we consider the associated series $\alpha = \sum_{n_1,\dots,n_r \geq 0} \frac{f(p_{n_1}(1),\dots,p_{n_r}(r))}{a_1^{n_1}\cdots a_r^{n_r}}$. Using combinatorial properties of automatic sequences and Schmidt's Subspace Theorem, we prove that $\alpha$ is either rational or transcendental. This extends a result of Adamczewski and Bugeaud to the multidimensional setting.

On the distribution of shapes of totally real multiquadratic number fields

The shape of a number field $K$ of degree $m$ is defined as the equivalence class of the lattice of integers under linear operations generated by rotations, reflections, and positive scalar dilations. It may be viewed as a point in the space of shapes $\mathscr{S}_{m-1} = \mathrm{GL}_{m-1}(\mathbb Z)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_{m-1}(\mathbb R)/\mathrm{GO}_{m-1}(\mathbb{R})$. The double quotient space is equipped with a natural measure $\mu$ which is induced from the Haar measure on $\mathrm{GL}_{m-1}(\mathbb R)$. We study the distribution of shapes of totally real multiquadratic number fields of degree $m:=2^n$ in which $2$ is unramified. We show that the distribution is governed by the restriction of $\mu$ to a certain torus orbit in $\mathscr{S}_{m-1}$. Our result resolves a conjecture of Haidar.

On the distribution of shapes of octic Kummer extensions

The shape of a number field $K$ of degree $n$ is defined as the equivalence class of the lattice of integers under linear operations generated by rotations, reflections, and positive scalar dilations. It may be viewed as a point in the space of shapes $\mathscr{S}_{n-1} = \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{GO}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$. In this paper, we study the distribution of shapes of octic Kummer extensions $L=\mathbb{Q}(i,\sqrt[4]{m})$, where $m\in\mathbb{Z}[i]$ is fourth-power-free. We parametrize these shapes by explicit invariants known as shape parameters and establish an asymptotic formula for their joint distribution ordered by absolute discriminant. The limiting distribution is given by an explicit measure that factors as the product of a continuous measure and a discrete measure arising from local arithmetic conditions.

On the distribution of shapes of sextic pure number fields

The shape of a number field $K$ of degree $n$ is defined as the equivalence class of the lattice of integers with respect to linear operations that are composites of rotations, reflections, and positive scalar dilations. The shape is a point in the space of shapes $\mathscr{S}_{n-1}$, which is the double quotient $\mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{GL}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R}) / \mathrm{GO}_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$. We investigate the distribution of shapes of pure sextic number fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[6]{m})$, ordered by absolute discriminant. Such fields are partitioned into $20$ distinct Types determined by local conditions at $2$ and $3$, and an explicit integral basis is given in each case. For each Type, the shape of $K$ admits an explicit description in terms of shape parameters. Fixing the sign of $m$ and a Type, we prove that the corresponding shapes are equidistributed along a translated torus orbit in the space of shapes. The limiting distribution is given by an explicit measure expressed as the product of a continuous measure and a discrete measure.

On the average $2$-torsion in class groups and narrow class groups of cubic orders with prescribed shape

We study the distribution of $2$-torsion in class groups and narrow class groups of cubic fields and cubic orders subject to prescribed shape conditions. The \emph{shape} of a cubic order in a number field is a natural geometric invariant taking values in the modular surface $\mathbb{H}/\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Fix a subset $W$ of the modular surface with positive hyperbolic measure and boundary of measure zero. Refining the methods of Bhargava and Varma, we prove that among cubic fields with shape in $W$, the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group is $5/4$ for totally real fields and $3/2$ for complex fields, while the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the narrow class group for totally real cubic fields is $2$. We also obtain analogous results for cubic orders satisfying prescribed local conditions at all primes.

Distribution questions for isogeny graphs over finite fields

In the first part of the paper, we fix a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and an odd prime $\ell$ and investigate the distribution of invariants associated to the $\ell$-volcano containing the reduction $E_p$, as $p$ ranges over primes of good ordinary reduction. Let $H(p)$ be the height of the volcano and let $d'(p)$ denote the relative position of $j(E_p)$ above the floor, and let $r\ge 0$ be an integer. Assuming that the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to $E$ is surjective, we derive an explicit formula for the natural density of primes $p$ for which $H(p)=r$ (resp.\ $d'(p)=r$). In the non-surjective case, we show that all sufficiently large heights occur with positive density. In the second part of the paper, we analyze the distribution of $\ell$-volcano heights over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and consider the limit as $q\to\infty$. Using analytic estimates for sums of Hurwitz class numbers in arithmetic progressions, we compute exact limiting densities for ordinary elliptic curves whose $\ell$-isogeny graph has a prescribed height $r$.

An analogue of Kida's formula for Mazur-Tate elements

We prove an analogue of Kida's formula for the Iwasawa invariants of the Mazur-Tate elements attached to elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $L/K$ be a Galois extension of abelian number fields with $p$-power Galois group. For an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$, we study the Mazur-Tate elements over the finite layers of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$ and $L$. We show that the vanishing of the $\mu$-invariant is preserved in the extension: if the level-$n$ Mazur-Tate element over $K$ has $\mu = 0$, then the corresponding element over $L$ also has $\mu = 0$. Moreover, the associated $\lambda$-invariants satisfy an explicit transition formula. This parallels the work of Hachimori-Matsuno on Selmer groups and of Matsuno on $p$-adic $L$-functions. As an application, we obtain an analogue of Kida's formula for the analytic Iwasawa invariants associated to Pollack's signed $p$-adic $L$-functions. Since our results apply to elliptic curves with any reduction type at $p$ under mild hypotheses, including those with additive reduction, we also obtain a Kida-type formula for the $p$-adic $L$-functions constructed by Delbourgo for elliptic curves with unstable additive reduction. In particular, because Mazur-Tate elements approximate $p$-adic $L$-functions in the limit, our results unify all previously known cases of Kida's formula for analytic Iwasawa invariants.

Counting elliptic curves with prescribed entanglements

We establish asymptotic lower bounds for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with prescribed entanglement of division fields, ordered by naive height. Such elliptic curves are obtained as $1$-parameter families arising from certain genus $0$ modular curves. We apply techniques from the geometry of numbers and sieve methods to prove that the number of elliptic curves with unexplained entanglements $\mathbb{Q}(E[2]) \cap \mathbb{Q}(E[3]) \neq \mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathbb{Q}(E[2]) \cap \mathbb{Q}(E[5]) \neq \mathbb{Q}$ and naive height $\leq X$, grows as $\gg X^{1/9}$ and $\gg X^{1/12}$, respectively.

Arithmetic invariants of torus links

The classical analogy between knots and primes motivates the study of Alexander polynomials through an arithmetic perspective. In this article we study the two-parameter family of torus knots and links $T_{p,q}$ and analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the zeros of their Alexander polynomials $\Delta_{p,q}(t)$, defined with respect to the total linking number covering. We prove that as $p,q\to\infty$ these zeros become equidistributed on the unit circle and derive an explicit formula for the limiting frequency with which primitive $r$-th roots of unity appear. To capture finer statistical information, we introduce the moment sequence of the zero distribution and compute its generating function in closed form. We further examine the Iwasawa theory of the corresponding branched covers, determining the Iwasawa invariants. The logarithmic Mahler measure of $\Delta_{p,q}(t)$ vanishes identically and the associated homological growth in towers of abelian covers of $S^3$ branched along $T_{p,q}$ is subexponential.

Massey products and the Iwasawa theory of fine Selmer groups

A central conjecture of Coates and Sujatha predicts that the fine Selmer group of any $p$-adic Galois representation is cotorsion over the relevant Iwasawa algebra with vanishing $\mu$-invariant, generalizing Iwasawa's original conjecture for class groups. In this article, we recast this conjecture in terms of higher Galois cohomological operations called Massey products, stated purely in terms of the residual representation. This characterization implies that if the $\mu$-invariant vanishes for a given $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, then it also vanishes for all $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions the Greenberg neighbourhood of radius $1/p$. Furthermore, we establish that the unobstructedness of ordinary deformation rings over $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions is equivalent to the vanishing of the $\mu$-invariant of the fine Selmer group attached to the adjoint representation. For ordinary deformation rings attached to $2$-dimensional automorphic Galois representations, we establish a close connection between the Noetherian property and the vanishing of the $\mu$-invariant.

On the distribution of shapes of pure quartic number fields

The shape of a number field is a subtle arithmetic invariant arising from the geometry of numbers. It is defined as the equivalence class of the lattice of integers with respect to linear operations that are composites of rotations, reflections, and positive scalar dilations. For a number field of degree $n$, the shape is a point in the space of shapes $\mathscr{S}_{n-1}$, which is the double quotient $GL_{n-1}(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash GL_{n-1}(\mathbb{R}) / GO_{n-1}(\mathbb{R})$. In this paper, we investigate the distribution of shapes in the family of pure quartic fields $K_m = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[4]{m})$. We prove that the shape of $K_m$ lies on one of ten explicitly described torus orbits in $\mathscr{S}_3$, determined by the sign and residue class of $m \bmod 32$. It is shown that the shape on a given torus orbit is completely determined by two parameters, one of which varies continuously, while the other takes values in a discrete set. As a result, the distribution of shapes in this family is governed by a product of a continuous and a discrete measure. Our results shed new light on a question posed by Manjul Bhargava and Piper H concerning the distribution of shapes in families of non-generic number fields of fixed degree. Notably, the limiting distribution in our case does not arise as the restriction of the natural measure on $\mathscr{S}_3$ induced by Haar measure on $GL_3(\mathbb{R})$.

Mazur's growth number conjecture and congruences

Motivated by the work of Greenberg-Vatsal and Emerton-Pollack-Weston, I investigate the extent to which Mazur's conjecture on the growth of Selmer ranks in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field persists under $p$-congruences between Galois representations. As a first step, I establish Mazur's conjecture for certain triples $(E, K, p)$ under explicit hypotheses. Building on this, I prove analogous results for Greenberg Selmer groups attached to modular forms that are congruent mod $p$ to $E$, including all specializations arising from Hida families of fixed tame level. In particular, I show that the Mordell-Weil ranks in non-anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of $K$ remain bounded for elliptic curves $E'$ such that $E[p]$ and $E'[p]$ are isomorphic as Galois modules.

The second moment of cubic Dirichlet L-functions over function fields

In this article, we study the second moment of cubic Dirichlet L-functions at the central point $s=1/2$ over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, where $q$ is a power of an odd prime satisfying $q \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$. Our result extends prior work of David, Florea and Lalin, who obtained an asymptotic formula for the first moment. Our approach relies on analytic techniques (Perron's formula, approximate functional equation, etc), adapted to the function field context. A key step in the construction is to relate second moment to certain averages of Gauss sums, which are estimated in loc. cit. using results of Kubota and Hoffstein.
