It Is Not My Code Anymore

AI-assisted programming raises distinct questions about who produces code, who feels ownership of it, and who is responsible when it fails. This research note examines these distinctions through a hypothetical enrollment failure and a selective reading of the literature. Identifying the producer of a defective expression does not, by itself, determine the duties of reviewers, release decision-makers, or service operators. Collective ownership likewise leaves those duties to be specified. The discussion then considers how quality engineering can evaluate both generated implementations and the processes that produce them. Acceptance criteria should be justified by the required service outcome, with component checks contributing evidence toward that outcome. This perspective also permits comparison with systems that perform a task without generating a separate program for it. Such substitution would change the object of authorship while leaving the service obligation intact. The note reports no new empirical results; it proposes distinctions and evaluation questions for AI-assisted software production.

Beyond .WAV: Design and Software Verification of VocalCap, a Traceable Browser-Based Audio Capture System for Vocal Biomarker Research

Remote voice studies often retain a final audio file with limited evidence about how it was captured, transferred, processed, and accepted. This paper presents VocalCap, an institution-controlled, browser-based system for self-guided capture of voice and related acoustic signals by participants without technical training. A versioned protocol drives the workflow. Each accepted recording retains a browser-native object, a client-lossless Float32 WAV derived from the same MediaStream, and a server-canonical mono PCM16 WAV, linked to evidence of capture execution, technical quality, byte-level integrity, recovery, and transformation provenance. IndexedDB preserves accepted browser artifacts until server confirmation, while session completion requires successful verification of every task and artifact. Software tests challenged the acquisition contracts with malformed or altered objects, exact-zero interruptions, channel-topology variants, and interrupted or repeated operations. A post hoc technical audit of 39 consented pilot recordings found 25 sample-identical stereo files and 14 files with signal confined to the left channel. Topology-aware active-channel selection limited the canonical root-mean-square level difference to less than 0.001 dB in all 14 affected files; equal-weight stereo averaging would have introduced approximately 6.02 dB of attenuation. Production end-to-end verification completed two five-task profiles in Chromium and WebKit, yielding 10 accepted recordings and 30 retained artifacts that passed server-side integrity and format checks. The results verify VocalCap's software behavior under the tested browser-engine conditions. Device-level acoustic agreement, target-population usability, clinical validity, and biomarker performance remain subjects for separate studies.

The Invisible Editorial Layer: Formalizing Undisclosed Inference-Time Steering, Probability Placement, and the Attribution Problem in Deployed Language Models

Evaluations of generative language models frequently interpret observable behavioral traits, such as political stance, brand inclination, and normative framing, as manifestations of model weights, post-training alignment, or prompting. This interpretation risks conflating a foundation model with the multi-layered production system through which its outputs are ultimately served. Modern inference stacks support runtime interventions capable of modifying generation while model parameters remain frozen. We examine inference-time framing bias: systematic runtime steering of generated text toward institutional, ideological, or commercial frames without requiring changes to the underlying model parameters. We formalize the Inference Attribution Problem and establish an observational non-identifiability result showing that, under black-box observation alone, behaviorally equivalent deployed systems may arise from structurally distinct combinations of model parameters and inference policies. Consequently, observed behavioral bias does not uniquely identify the architectural layer responsible for it. We further characterize Probability Placement as a deployment pattern in which undisclosed commercial influence is embedded within an ostensibly organic assistant response through systematic probability-mass reallocation, distinguishing it from explicit token-auction mechanisms for generative advertising. Finally, we discuss implications for behavioral auditing, inference provenance, confidential computing, cryptographic attestation, the EU AI Act, the Digital Services Act, and advertising-disclosure principles. We argue that governance of generative systems must increasingly distinguish between auditing a model and auditing the deployed system that ultimately speaks.

The Caf\'e in Amsterdam: When the Incumbent Becomes the Oracle

A field can reformulate its computations freely exactly where its demand is stated independently of any incumbent implementation, and finds itself unable to when the incumbent's own output has quietly become the specification. This note offers that observation as a lens on computational reformulation for modern accelerators, where posing a problem in a hardware-friendly form can yield large speed and energy gains, but only if a replacement can be judged at all. Building on the test-oracle problem (Weyuker; Barr et al.), on requirements engineering's notion of implementation bias (Zave and Jackson), and on the case for judging approximate designs by acceptability rather than numerical proximity (Felzmann et al.), it names the pathology "baseline capture": the moment an incumbent stops being evidence that a demand can be met and becomes the definition of meeting it. It then separates two questions that are easily confused: whether a reformulation can be judged at all, which turns on the existence of an incumbent-independent demand, and whether its discovery can be automated, which turns additionally on the cost of evaluating that demand. Short cases -- shortest-path routing, learnable audio frontends, ZIP-215 for Ed25519 signature validation, CESM-ECT for climate models, and a single-GEMM audio frontend measured at 1.64x-3.29x speedup and up to 3.03x less energy -- illustrate the pattern and the move of "buying a verifier": making a demand explicit, operational, and independent of the incumbent. No component is claimed novel in isolation; the contribution is the synthesis and the single question it makes easy to ask of any reformulation result -- does its acceptance test mention the incumbent's output?

MelT: A Portable, Single-GEMM Mel Audio Frontend via Non-Uniform DFT with Measured Latency and Energy Gains on GPUs

Modern neural audio models run on accelerators whose peak throughput comes from dense matrix multiplication, increasingly at the edge and in datacenters. The conventional acoustic frontend, however -- a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) followed by sparse Mel aggregation -- remains a multi-stage pipeline centered on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), with execution overheads unlike the dense linear algebra dominating the inference stack. This work introduces MelT, a portable single-stage Mel frontend that precomputes Mel-spaced Non-Uniform Discrete Fourier Transform (NDFT) bases and applies them to time-domain frames through General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM). The contribution is a computational design principle: decoupling Mel feature extraction from vendor-specific FFT primitives and lowering it onto the matrix-multiplication substrate accelerators already optimize. It is not a new spectral operator. MelT's direct projection performs more arithmetic than the FFT pipeline. Yet in the compact-resolution regime of neural audio frontends, it achieves a 1.64-times to 3.29-times latency reduction and up to a 3.03-times reduction in measured active energy, from the Apple A18 Pro to the NVIDIA H100. All gains are within-platform comparisons, accompanied by task-level validation. Word error rate stays statistically equivalent to the native frontend's on frozen Whisper models of medium size and larger; speaker-attribute classification on VoxCeleb1 is non-inferior. The cepstral extension MFCCT preserves utility on a clinical respiratory-insufficiency classification task (SPIRA) while improving on the MFCC baseline. These results indicate that, in practical regimes on the accelerators evaluated here, hardware alignment rather than arithmetic count can govern the realized cost of feature extraction.

Text-to-hashtag Generation using Seq2seq Learning

In this paper, we studied whether models based on BiLSTM and BERT can predict hashtags in Brazilian Portuguese for Ecommerce websites. Hashtags have a sizable financial impact on Ecommerce. We processed a corpus of Ecommerce reviews as inputs, and predicted hashtags as outputs. We evaluated the results using four quantitative metrics: NIST, BLEU, METEOR and a crowdsourced score. A word cloud was used as a qualitative metric. While all computer-generated metrics (NIST, BLEU and METEOR) indicated bad results, the crowdsourced results produced amazing scores. We concluded that the texts predicted by the neural networks are very promising for use as hashtags for products on Ecommerce websites.
