A Three-Axis Rydberg Atomic Receiver Model for Polarization-Based Direction-of-Arrival Sensing
This paper develops a three-axis Rydberg atomic receiver model for direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation of the radio frequency (RF) signal source. Three nominally orthogonal RF local oscillators (LOs), each assigned a distinct frequency offset, project the weak incident RF field into resolvable complex beat coefficients in the optical readout. A beat-vector observation is obtained by adopting a response calibration mechanism that maps the coefficients onto the three axes of the Cartesian coordinate system. For a known circularly polarised RF signal, this observation induces a direction-dependent Rydberg steering vector, enabling maximum-likelihood DoA estimation. The pro posed procedure translates the Rydberg beat-vector front end into a highly sensitive RF field DoA sensor. Simulation results show that trace-level beat extraction supports the proposed DoA sensing workflow and provides a basis for comparison with a traditional vector antenna (VA) benchmark.
