Dichroic Filter Characterizations

We present here measurements and characterizations of several dichroic filters, which are being used more commonly in nuclear and particle physics for photon-detection. The measurements were performed on filters immersed in several media: air, water, and LAB-based liquid scintillator. Measurements of transmission and reflection properties were made at various angles of incidence, and the data presented here can be used to develop detailed optical models for detector simulations. We find a modified Bragg's Law is a good model for the shift in transmission edge as a function of angle of incidence, across the various media.

On the asymptotic support of Plancherel measures for homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a real linear reductive group and let $H$ be a unimodular, locally algebraic subgroup. Let $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ be the set of irreducible unitary representations of $G$ contributing to the decomposition of $L^2(G/H)$, namely the support of the Plancherel measure. In this paper, we will relate $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ with the image of moment map from the cotangent bundle $T^*(G/H)\to \mathfrak{g}^*$. For the homogeneous space $X=G/H$, we attach a complex Levi subgroup $L_X$ of the complexification of $G$ and we show that in some sense "most" of representations in $\operatorname{supp} L^2(G/H)$ are obtained as quantizations of coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ such that $\mathcal{O}\simeq G/L$ and that the complexification of $L$ is conjugate to $L_X$. Moreover, the union of such coadjoint orbits $\mathcal{O}$ coincides asymptotically with the moment map image. As a corollary, we show that $L^2(G/H)$ has a discrete series if the moment map image contains a nonempty subset of elliptic elements.

Irreducible Characters and Semisimple Coadjoint Orbits

When $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, linear algebraic group, the orbit method predicts that nearly all of the unitary dual of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ consists of representations naturally associated to orbital parameters $(\mathcal{O},\Gamma)$. If $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a real, reductive group and $\mathcal{O}$ is a semisimple coadjoint orbit, the corresponding unitary representation $\pi(\mathcal{O},\Gamma)$ may be constructed utilizing Vogan and Zuckerman's cohomological induction together with Mackey's real parabolic induction. In this article, we give a geometric character formula for such representations $\pi(\mathcal{O},\Gamma)$. Special cases of this formula were previously obtained by Harish-Chandra and Kirillov when $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is compact and by Rossmann and Duflo when $\pi(\mathcal{O},\Gamma)$ is tempered.

Wave Front Sets of Reductive Lie Group Representations III

Let $G$ be a real, reductive algebraic group, and let $X$ be a homogeneous space for $G$ with a non-zero invariant density. We give an explicit description of a Zariski open, dense subset of the asymptotics of the tempered support of $L^2(X)$. Under additional hypotheses, this result remains true for vector bundle valued harmonic analysis on $X$. These results follow from an upper bound on the wave front set of an induced Lie group representation under a uniformity condition.

Wave Front Sets of Reductive Lie Group Representations II

In this paper it is shown that the wave front set of a direct integral of singular, irreducible representations of a real, reductive algebraic group is contained in the singular set. Combining this result with the results of the first paper in this series, the author obtains asymptotic results on the occurrence of tempered representations in induction and restriction problems for real, reductive algebraic groups.

Wave Front Sets of Reductive Lie Group Representations

If $G$ is a Lie group, $H\subset G$ is a closed subgroup, and $\tau$ is a unitary representation of $H$, then the authors give a sufficient condition on $\xi\in i\mathfrak{g}^*$ to be in the wave front set of $\operatorname{Ind}_H^G\tau$. In the special case where $\tau$ is the trivial representation, this result was conjectured by Howe. If $G$ is a real, reductive algebraic group and $\pi$ is a unitary representation of $G$ that is weakly contained in the regular representation, then the authors give a geometric description of $\operatorname{WF}(\pi)$ in terms of the direct integral decomposition of $\pi$ into irreducibles. Special cases of this result were previously obtained by Kashiwara-Vergne, Howe, and Rossmann. The authors give applications to harmonic analysis problems and branching problems.

The Continuous Spectrum in Discrete Series Branching Laws

If $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, $H$ is a symmetric subgroup, and $π$ is a discrete series representation of $G$, the authors give a condition on the pair $(G,H)$ which guarantees that the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ contains each irreducible representation of $H$ with finite multiplicity. In addition, if $G$ is a reductive Lie group of Harish-Chandra class, and $H\subset G$ is a closed, reductive subgroup of Harish-Chandra class, the authors show that the multiplicity function in the direct integral decomposition of $π|_H$ is constant along `continuous parameters'. In obtaining these results, the authors develop a new technique for studying multiplicities in the restriction $π|_H$ via convolution with Harish-Chandra characters. This technique has the advantage of being useful for studying the continuous spectrum as well as the discrete spectrum.

Tempered Representations and Nilpotent Orbits

Given a nilpotent orbit O of a real, reductive algebraic group, a necessary condition is given for the existence of a tempered representation pi such that O occurs in the wave front cycle of pi. The coefficients of the wave front cycle of a tempered representation are expressed in terms of volumes of precompact submanifolds of an affine space.

Fourier Transforms of Nilpotent, Coadjoint Orbits for GL(n,R)

The main result of this paper is an explicit formula for the Fourier transform of the canonical measure on a nilpotent coadjoint orbit for GL(n,R). This paper also includes some results on limit formulas for reductive Lie groups including new proofs of classical limit formulas of Rao and Harish-Chandra.
