General Effective Theories of Black Holes in the Large D Limit

We derive the general form of the effective equations governing black hole dynamics in the limit of a large number of dimensions $D$. These split into a universal \emph{soap-bubble} embedding condition for stationary configurations and a set of nonlinear dynamical evolution equations describing near-horizon fluctuations of $O(1/D)$ amplitude over horizon scales of $O(1/\sqrt{D})$. We obtain these equations in full generality, including arbitrary asymptotic sources in the near-horizon region, and we show that they form a parabolic system with a well-posed initial value problem. To connect the various approaches to large-$D$ black hole dynamics, we also show that both the embedding and dynamical equations can be derived from the covariant membrane formalism. We clarify the intrinsic scope of the large-$D$ approach, emphasizing that it yields a well-posed dynamical evolution only on horizon scales of $O(1/\sqrt{D})$, which is the range where the most relevant horizon dynamics occur. Our results highlight the versatility of these effective theories for studying a wide class of black hole phenomena.

Spinning Black Binaries in de Sitter space

We construct stationary, rotating black binaries in general relativity with a positive cosmological constant. We consider identical black holes with either aligned or anti-aligned spins. Both cases have less entropy than the corresponding single Kerr/Schwarzschild de Sitter black hole with the same total angular momentum and cosmological horizon entropy. Our solutions establish continuous non-uniqueness in general relativity without matter. They also provide initial data for the spinning binary merger problem (when orbital angular momentum is added).

Static Black Binaries in de Sitter

We construct the first four-dimensional multi-black hole solution of general relativity with a positive cosmological constant. The solution consists of two static black holes whose gravitational attraction is balanced by the cosmic expansion. These static binaries provide the first four-dimensional example of non-uniqueness in general relativity without matter.

Superradiance and black resonator strings encounter helical black strings

We construct a cohomogeneity-1 helical black string in six-dimensional Einstein gravity. The helical solution branches from the onset of the gravitational superradiant instability of the equal-spinning Myers-Perry black string. The isometry group of the helical black string is $\mathbb{R}_T \times U(1)_Z \times SU(2)$, where the first two are helical isometries generated by linear combinations of time translation, shifts along the string, and rotation, each of which is individually broken by the superradiant instability. The helical black string is stationary, non-axisymmetric, and has nonzero horizon velocity despite the absence of momentum in the string direction. The entropy of the helical black string is higher than that of the Myers-Perry black string, but lower than cohomogeneity-2 ``black resonator strings'' (recently found) when the solutions overlap in the microcanonical ensemble. The entropy of the helical black string approaches zero when the horizon velocity along the string reaches its maximum given by the speed of light. Nevertheless, we find no evidence for the existence of regular horizonless solutions in this limit.

Holographic duals of evaporating black holes

We describe the dynamical evaporation of a black hole as the classical evolution in time of a black hole in an Anti-de Sitter braneworld. A bulk black hole whose horizon intersects the brane yields the classical bulk dual of a black hole coupled to quantum conformal fields. The evaporation of this black hole happens when the bulk horizon slides off the brane, making the horizon on the brane shrink. We use a large-D effective theory of the bulk Einstein equations to solve the time evolution of these systems. With this method, we study the dual evaporation of a variety of black holes interacting with colder radiation baths. We also obtain the dual of the collapse of holographic radiation to form a black hole on the brane. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the Page curve of the radiation in our evaporation setups, with entanglement islands appearing and then shrinking during the decreasing part of the curve.

Gregory-Laflamme and Superradiance encounter Black Resonator Strings

We construct novel black strings that are neither time-translation invariant, nor axisymmetric, nor translationally invariant in the string direction, but nevertheless have a helical Killing vector field. These solutions branch from the superradiant instability of $D=6$ Myers-Perry black strings with equal angular momenta. We coin these solutions as {\it black resonator strings} and we find that they have more entropy than Myers-Perry black strings for the energies and angular momenta where both solutions coexist. We also construct Kaluza-Klein geons, which share the symmetries of black resonator strings, but are horizonless. Unlike in other superradiant systems, Kaluza-Klein geons are not the horizonless limit of black resonator strings and are instead entirely separate solutions.

The large D effective theory of black strings in AdS

We study black strings/funnels and other black hole configurations in AdS that correspond to different phases of the dual CFT in black hole backgrounds, employing different approaches at large $D$. We assemble the phase diagram of uniform and non-uniform black strings/funnels and study their dynamical stability. We also construct flowing horizons. Many of our results are available analytically, though some are only known numerically.

Gregory-Laflamme encounters Superradiance

We investigate the effect of superradiant scattering of gravitational perturbations on the stability of rotating black strings, focusing on the six dimensional equal-spinning Myers-Perry black string. We find that rapidly rotating black strings are unstable to gravitational superradiant modes within a bounded range of string lengths. The instability occurs because momentum along the string direction creates a potential barrier that allows for the confinement of superradiant modes. Yet, five dimensional Myers-Perry black holes do not have stable particle orbits so, unlike other known superradiant systems, these black strings remain stable to perturbations with sufficiently high azimuthal mode number -- this is a `finite-$m$' superradiant instability. For some parameters, this instability competes with the Gregory-Laflamme instability, but otherwise exists independently. The onset of this instability is degenerate and branches to multiple steady-state solutions. This paper is the first of a trilogy: in the next two, we construct two distinct families of rotating strings emerging from the superradiant onset (the `black resonator strings' and `helical black strings'). We argue that similar physics is present in 5-dimensional Kerr black strings, but not in $D>6$ equal-spinning Myers-Perry black strings.

Black Tsunamis and Naked Singularities in AdS

We study the evolution of the Gregory-Laflamme instability for black strings in global AdS spacetime, and investigate the CFT dual of the formation of a bulk naked singularity. Using an effective theory in the large D limit, we uncover a rich variety of dynamical behaviour, depending on the thickness of the string and on initial perturbations. These include: large inflows of horizon generators from the asymptotic boundary (a `black tsunami'); a pinch-off of the horizon that likely reveals a naked singularity; and competition between these two behaviours, such as a nakedly singular pinch-off that subsequently gets covered by a black tsunami. The holographic dual describes different patterns of heat flow due to the Hawking radiation of two black holes placed at the antipodes of a spherical universe. We also present a model that describes, in any D, the burst in the holographic stress-energy tensor when the signal from a bulk self-similar naked singularity reaches the boundary. The model shows that the shear components of the boundary stress diverge in finite time, while the energy density and pressures from the burst vanish.

Multioscillating black holes

We study rotating global AdS solutions in five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a multiplet complex scalar within a cohomogeneity-1 ansatz. The onset of the gravitational and scalar field superradiant instabilities of the Myers-Perry-AdS black hole mark bifurcation points to black resonators and hairy Myers-Perry-AdS black holes, respectively. These solutions are subject to the other (gravitational or scalar) instability, and result in hairy black resonators which contain both gravitational and scalar hair. The hairy black resonators have smooth zero-horizon limits that we call graviboson stars. In the hairy black resonator and graviboson solutions, multiple scalar components with different frequencies are excited, and hence these are multioscillating solutions. The phase structure of the solutions are examined in the microcanonical ensemble, i.e. at fixed energy and angular momenta. It is found that the entropy of the hairy black resonator is never the largest among them. We also find that hairy black holes with higher scalar wavenumbers are entropically dominant and occupy more of phase space than those of lower wavenumbers.

Quantum BTZ black hole

We study a holographic construction of quantum rotating BTZ black holes that incorporates the exact backreaction from strongly coupled quantum conformal fields. It is based on an exact four-dimensional solution for a black hole localized on a brane in AdS$_4$, first discussed some years ago but never fully investigated in this manner. Besides quantum CFT effects and their backreaction, we also investigate the role of higher-curvature corrections in the effective three-dimensional theory. We obtain the quantum-corrected geometry and the renormalized stress tensor. We show that the quantum black hole entropy, which includes the entanglement of the fields outside the horizon, satisfies the first law of thermodynamics exactly, even in the presence of backreaction and with higher-curvature corrections, while the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy does not. This result, which involves a rather non-trivial bulk calculation, shows the consistency of the holographic interpretation of braneworlds. We compare our renormalized stress tensor to results derived for free conformal fields, and for a previous holographic construction without backreaction effects, which is shown to be a limit of the solutions in this article.

Superradiant instability of black resonators and geons

Black resonators and geons in global AdS are rapidly rotating, low-energy solutions with a helical Killing field. We study the linear mode stability of equal angular momenta, five-dimensional black resonators and geons under scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations. We find that black resonators are unstable to the superradiant instability, in agreement with previously known results. Perhaps surprisingly, many geons appear linearly stable, despite having an ergoregion. This apparent stability implies that geons are important long-lived, low-energy states in the dual gauge theory. However, we do find that geons are unstable within a certain range of parameter space. We comment on the nature of this instability and to its possible endpoints. We also report on new non-spinning oscillating geons, which we construct within a cohomogeneity two ansatz. Given the existing arguments that suggest our linear stability results may be extended nonlinearly, our findings indicate that most geons are generic and long-lived solutions.

Areas and entropies in BFSS/gravity duality

The BFSS matrix model provides an example of gauge-theory / gravity duality where the gauge theory is a model of ordinary quantum mechanics with no spatial subsystems. If there exists a general connection between areas and entropies in this model similar to the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the entropies must be more general than the usual subsystem entanglement entropies. In this note, we first investigate the extremal surfaces in the geometries dual to the BFSS model at zero and finite temperature. We describe a method to associate regulated areas to these surfaces and calculate the areas explicitly for a family of surfaces preserving $SO(8)$ symmetry, both at zero and finite temperature. We then discuss possible entropic quantities in the matrix model that could be dual to these regulated areas.

New islands of stability with double-trace deformations

We assess the role of a resonant spectrum in the AdS instability, and quantify the extent to which breaking the resonant spectrum of AdS can restore stability. Specifically, we study non-collapsing `multi-oscillator' solutions in AdS under various boundary conditions that allow for both resonant and non-resonant spectra. We find non-collapsing two mode, equal amplitude solutions in the non-resonant Robin case, and that these solutions vanish in the fully resonant Dirichlet case. This is consistent with non-resonant stability, and with the idea that stable solutions in the Dirichlet case are all single-mode dominated. Surprisingly, when the boundary condition is Neumann, we find non-collapsing solutions arbitrarily close to AdS that are not single-mode dominated, despite the spectrum being fully resonant.

Multi-oscillating Boson Stars

We propose that stable boson stars generically fall within an infinite-parameter family of solutions that oscillate on any number of non-commensurate frequencies. We numerically construct two-frequency solutions and explore their parameter space. These solutions merge with the standard boson star family in the limit where the non-dominating frequencies are turned off. We find that for a fixed energy, these two-frequency solutions can differ considerably in size from standard boson stars.

Holographic Signatures of Critical Collapse

Critical phenomena in gravitational collapse exhibit the universal features of self-similarity, critical scaling, and the appearance of a naked singularity. We study critical collapse in AdS, focusing on holographic field theory observables. We demonstrate that the echoing period, critical exponent, and signatures of the naked singularity can all be extracted from the holographic stress tensor.

Gravitating Scalars and Critical Collapse in the Large $D$ Limit

We develop the large $D$ limit of general relativity for spherically symmetric scalar fields in both asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. The leading order equations in the $1/D$ expansion can be solved analytically, providing a large $D$ description of oscillating soliton stars. When the amplitude reaches a critical threshold, certain divergences occur which we interpret as signal of horizon formation. We estimate the size of the resulting black hole and obtain, with respect to that definition, a Choptuik scaling exponent for our family of solutions.

Charting the AdS Islands of Stability with Multi-oscillators?

We propose the existence of an infinite-parameter family of solutions in AdS that oscillate on any number of non-commensurate frequencies. Some of these solutions appear stable when perturbed, and we suggest that they can be used to map out the AdS "islands of stability". By numerically constructing two-frequency solutions and exploring their parameter space, we find that both collapse and non-collapse are generic scenarios near AdS. Unlike other approaches, our results are valid on any timescale and do not rely on perturbation theory.
