Prototypes as Explanation for Time Series Anomaly Detection

Detecting abnormal patterns that deviate from a certain regular repeating pattern in time series is essential in many big data applications. However, the lack of labels, the dynamic nature of time series data, and unforeseeable abnormal behaviors make the detection process challenging. Despite the success of recent deep anomaly detection approaches, the mystical mechanisms in such black-box models have become a new challenge in safety-critical applications. The lack of model transparency and prediction reliability hinders further breakthroughs in such domains. This paper proposes ProtoAD, using prototypes as the example-based explanation for the state of regular patterns during anomaly detection. Without significant impact on the detection performance, prototypes shed light on the deep black-box models and provide intuitive understanding for domain experts and stakeholders. We extend the widely used prototype learning in classification problems into anomaly detection. By visualizing both the latent space and input space prototypes, we intuitively demonstrate how regular data are modeled and why specific patterns are considered abnormal.

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) -- -- I. General Description and the First Data Release (DR1)

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) of the northern sky is a specifically-designed multi-band photometric survey aiming to provide reliable stellar parameters with accuracy comparable to those from low-resolution optical spectra. It was carried out with the 2.3-m Bok telescope of Steward Observatory and three other telescopes. The observations in the $u_s$ and $v_s$ passband produced over 36,092 frames of images in total, covering a sky area of $\sim9960$ degree$^2$. The median survey completeness of all observing fields for the two bands are of $u_{\rm s}=20.4$ mag and $v_s=20.3$ mag, respectively, while the limiting magnitudes with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 100 are $u_s\sim17$ mag and $v_s\sim18$ mag, correspondingly. We combined our catalog with the data release 1 (DR1) of the first of Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS1, PS1) catalog, and obtained a total of 48,553,987 sources which have at least one photometric measurement in each of the SAGES $u_s$ and $v_s$ and PS1 $grizy$ passbands, which is the DR1 of SAGES and it will be released in our paper. We compare our $gri$ point-source photometry with those of PS1 and found an RMS scatter of $\sim2$% in difference of PS1 and SAGES for the same band. We estimated an internal photometric precision of SAGES to be on the order of $\sim1$%. Astrometric precision is better than $0^{\prime\prime}.2$ based on comparison with the DR1 of Gaia mission. In this paper, we also describe the final end-user database, and provide some science applications.

Exploring the Potential of Integrated Optical Sensing and Communication (IOSAC) Systems with Si Waveguides for Future Networks

Advanced silicon photonic technologies enable integrated optical sensing and communication (IOSAC) in real time for the emerging application requirements of simultaneous sensing and communication for next-generation networks. Here, we propose and demonstrate the IOSAC system on the silicon nitride (SiN) photonics platform. The IOSAC devices based on microring resonators are capable of monitoring the variation of analytes, transmitting the information to the terminal along with the modulated optical signal in real-time, and replacing bulk optics in high-precision and high-speed applications. By directly integrating SiN ring resonators with optical communication networks, simultaneous sensing and optical communication are demonstrated by an optical signal transmission experimental system using especially filtering amplified spontaneous emission spectra. The refractive index (RI) sensing ring with a sensitivity of 172 nm/RIU, a figure of merit (FOM) of 1220, and a detection limit (DL) of 8.2*10-6 RIU is demonstrated. Simultaneously, the 1.25 Gbps optical on-off-keying (OOK) signal is transmitted at the concentration of different NaCl solutions, which indicates the bit-error-ratio (BER) decreases with the increase in concentration. The novel IOSAC technology shows the potential to realize high-performance simultaneous biosensing and communication in real time and further accelerate the development of IoT and 6G networks.

Compositional Scene Representation Learning via Reconstruction: A Survey

Visual scenes are composed of visual concepts and have the property of combinatorial explosion. An important reason for humans to efficiently learn from diverse visual scenes is the ability of compositional perception, and it is desirable for artificial intelligence to have similar abilities. Compositional scene representation learning is a task that enables such abilities. In recent years, various methods have been proposed to apply deep neural networks, which have been proven to be advantageous in representation learning, to learn compositional scene representations via reconstruction, advancing this research direction into the deep learning era. Learning via reconstruction is advantageous because it may utilize massive unlabeled data and avoid costly and laborious data annotation. In this survey, we first outline the current progress on reconstruction-based compositional scene representation learning with deep neural networks, including development history and categorizations of existing methods from the perspectives of the modeling of visual scenes and the inference of scene representations; then provide benchmarks, including an open source toolbox to reproduce the benchmark experiments, of representative methods that consider the most extensively studied problem setting and form the foundation for other methods; and finally discuss the limitations of existing methods and future directions of this research topic.

Ghost in the Minecraft: Generally Capable Agents for Open-World Environments via Large Language Models with Text-based Knowledge and Memory

The captivating realm of Minecraft has attracted substantial research interest in recent years, serving as a rich platform for developing intelligent agents capable of functioning in open-world environments. However, the current research landscape predominantly focuses on specific objectives, such as the popular "ObtainDiamond" task, and has not yet shown effective generalization to a broader spectrum of tasks. Furthermore, the current leading success rate for the "ObtainDiamond" task stands at around 20%, highlighting the limitations of Reinforcement Learning (RL) based controllers used in existing methods. To tackle these challenges, we introduce Ghost in the Minecraft (GITM), a novel framework integrates Large Language Models (LLMs) with text-based knowledge and memory, aiming to create Generally Capable Agents (GCAs) in Minecraft. These agents, equipped with the logic and common sense capabilities of LLMs, can skillfully navigate complex, sparse-reward environments with text-based interactions. We develop a set of structured actions and leverage LLMs to generate action plans for the agents to execute. The resulting LLM-based agent markedly surpasses previous methods, achieving a remarkable improvement of +47.5% in success rate on the "ObtainDiamond" task, demonstrating superior robustness compared to traditional RL-based controllers. Notably, our agent is the first to procure all items in the Minecraft Overworld technology tree, demonstrating its extensive capabilities. GITM does not need any GPU for training, but a single CPU node with 32 CPU cores is enough. This research shows the potential of LLMs in developing capable agents for handling long-horizon, complex tasks and adapting to uncertainties in open-world environments. Computation Offloading for Edge Computing in RIS-Assisted Symbiotic Radio Systems

In the paper, we investigate the coordination process of sensing and computation offloading in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided base station (BS)-centric symbiotic radio (SR) systems. Specifically, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices first sense data from environment and then tackle the data locally or offload the data to BS for remote computing, while RISs are leveraged to enhance the quality of blocked channels and also act as IoT devices to transmit its sensed data. To explore the mechanism of cooperative sensing and computation offloading in this system, we aim at maximizing the total completed sensed bits of all users and RISs by jointly optimizing the time allocation parameter, the passive beamforming at each RIS, the transmit beamforming at BS, and the energy partition parameters for all users subject to the size of sensed data, energy supply and given time cycle. The formulated nonconvex problem is tightly coupled by the time allocation parameter and involves the mathematical expectations, which cannot be solved straightly. We use Monte Carlo and fractional programming methods to transform the nonconvex objective function and then propose an alternating optimization-based algorithm to find an approximate solution with guaranteed convergence. Numerical results show that the RIS-aided SR system outperforms other benchmarks in sensing. Furthermore, with the aid of RIS, the channel and system performance can be significantly improved.

What You See is What You Grasp: User-Friendly Grasping Guided by Near-eye-tracking

This work presents a next-generation human-robot interface that can infer and realize the user's manipulation intention via sight only. Specifically, we develop a system that integrates near-eye-tracking and robotic manipulation to enable user-specified actions (e.g., grasp, pick-and-place, etc), where visual information is merged with human attention to create a mapping for desired robot actions. To enable sight guided manipulation, a head-mounted near-eye-tracking device is developed to track the eyeball movements in real-time, so that the user's visual attention can be identified. To improve the grasping performance, a transformer based grasp model is then developed. Stacked transformer blocks are used to extract hierarchical features where the volumes of channels are expanded at each stage while squeezing the resolution of feature maps. Experimental validation demonstrates that the eye-tracking system yields low gaze estimation error and the grasping system yields promising results on multiple grasping datasets. This work is a proof of concept for gaze interaction-based assistive robot, which holds great promise to help the elder or upper limb disabilities in their daily lives. Superconducting phase above room temperature in lutetium-beryllium hydrides at high pressures

High-pressure structural search was performed on the hydrogen-rich compound LuBeH$_8$ at pressures up to 200 GPa. We found a $Fm\overline{3}m$ structure that exhibits stability and superconductivity above 100 GPa. Our phonon dispersion, electronic band structure, and superconductivity analyses in the 100-200 GPa pressure range reveal a strong electron-phonon coupling in LuBeH$_8$. While $T_{c}$ shows a decreasing trend as the pressure increases, with a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ of 255 K at 200 GPa and a maximum $T_c$ of 355 k at 100 GPa. Our research has demonstrated the room-temperature superconductivity in $Fm\overline{3}m$-LuBeH$_8$, thus enriching the family of ternary hydrides. These findings provide valuable guidance for identifying new high-temperature superconducting hydrides.

Large Language Models Need Holistically Thought in Medical Conversational QA

The medical conversational question answering (CQA) system aims at providing a series of professional medical services to improve the efficiency of medical care. Despite the success of large language models (LLMs) in complex reasoning tasks in various fields, such as mathematics, logic, and commonsense QA, they still need to improve with the increased complexity and specialization of the medical field. This is because medical CQA tasks require not only strong medical reasoning, but also the ability to think broadly and deeply. In this paper, to address these challenges in medical CQA tasks that need to be considered and understood in many aspects, we propose the Holistically Thought (HoT) method, which is designed to guide the LLMs to perform the diffused and focused thinking for generating high-quality medical responses. The proposed HoT method has been evaluated through automated and manual assessments in three different medical CQA datasets containing the English and Chinese languages. The extensive experimental results show that our method can produce more correctness, professional, and considerate answers than several state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, manifesting its effectiveness. One-shot Federated Learning without Server-side Training

Federated Learning (FL) has recently made significant progress as a new machine learning paradigm for privacy protection. Due to the high communication cost of traditional FL, one-shot federated learning is gaining popularity as a way to reduce communication cost between clients and the server. Most of the existing one-shot FL methods are based on Knowledge Distillation; however, {distillation based approach requires an extra training phase and depends on publicly available data sets or generated pseudo samples.} In this work, we consider a novel and challenging cross-silo setting: performing a single round of parameter aggregation on the local models without server-side training. In this setting, we propose an effective algorithm for Model Aggregation via Exploring Common Harmonized Optima (MA-Echo), which iteratively updates the parameters of all local models to bring them close to a common low-loss area on the loss surface, without harming performance on their own data sets at the same time. Compared to the existing methods, MA-Echo can work well even in extremely non-identical data distribution settings where the support categories of each local model have no overlapped labels with those of the others. We conduct extensive experiments on two popular image classification data sets to compare the proposed method with existing methods and demonstrate the effectiveness of MA-Echo, which clearly outperforms the state-of-the-arts. The source code can be accessed in \url{https://github.com/FudanVI/MAEcho}.

Robust image steganography against lossy JPEG compression based on embedding domain selection and adaptive error correction

Transmitting images for communication on social networks has become routine, which is helpful for covert communication. The traditional steganography algorithm is unable to successfully convey secret information since the social network channel will perform lossy operations on images, such as JPEG compression. Previous studies tried to solve this problem by enhancing the robustness or making the cover adapt to the channel processing. In this study, we proposed a robust image steganography method against lossy JPEG compression based on embedding domain selection and adaptive error correction. To improve anti-steganalysis performance, the embedding domain is selected adaptively. To increase robustness and lessen the impact on anti-steganalysis performance, the error correction capacity of the error correction code is adaptively adjusted to eliminate redundancy. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better anti-steganalysis and robustness.

Non-contact PPG Signal and Heart Rate Estimation with Multi-hierarchical Convolutional Network

Heartbeat rhythm and heart rate (HR) are important physiological parameters of the human body. This study presents an efficient multi-hierarchical spatio-temporal convolutional network that can quickly estimate remote physiological (rPPG) signal and HR from face video clips. First, the facial color distribution characteristics are extracted using a low-level face feature generation (LFFG) module. Then, the three-dimensional (3D) spatio-temporal stack convolution module (STSC) and multi-hierarchical feature fusion module (MHFF) are used to strengthen the spatio-temporal correlation of multi-channel features. In the MHFF, sparse optical flow is used to capture the tiny motion information of faces between frames and generate a self-adaptive region of interest (ROI) skin mask. Finally, the signal prediction module (SP) is used to extract the estimated rPPG signal. The heart rate estimation results show that the proposed network overperforms the state-of-the-art methods on three datasets, 1) UBFC-RPPG, 2) COHFACE, 3) our dataset, with the mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.15, 5.57, 1.75 beats per minute (bpm) respectively.

FlexEdge: Digital Twin-Enabled Task Offloading for UAV-Aided Vehicular Edge Computing

Integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into vehicular networks have shown high potentials in affording intensive computing tasks. In this paper, we study the digital twin driven vehicular edge computing networks for adaptively computing resource management where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) named FlexEdge acts as a flying server. In particular, we first formulate an energy consumption minimization problem by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory and computation resource under the practical constraints. To address such a challenging problem, we then build the computation offloading process as a Markov decision process and propose a deep reinforcement learning-based proximal policy optimization algorithm to dynamically learn the computation offloading strategy and trajectory design policy. Numerical results indicate that our proposed algorithm can achieve quick convergence rate and significantly reduce the system energy consumption.

DeFeeNet: Consecutive 3D Human Motion Prediction with Deviation Feedback

Let us rethink the real-world scenarios that require human motion prediction techniques, such as human-robot collaboration. Current works simplify the task of predicting human motions into a one-off process of forecasting a short future sequence (usually no longer than 1 second) based on a historical observed one. However, such simplification may fail to meet practical needs due to the neglect of the fact that motion prediction in real applications is not an isolated ``observe then predict'' unit, but a consecutive process composed of many rounds of such unit, semi-overlapped along the entire sequence. As time goes on, the predicted part of previous round has its corresponding ground truth observable in the new round, but their deviation in-between is neither exploited nor able to be captured by existing isolated learning fashion. In this paper, we propose DeFeeNet, a simple yet effective network that can be added on existing one-off prediction models to realize deviation perception and feedback when applied to consecutive motion prediction task. At each prediction round, the deviation generated by previous unit is first encoded by our DeFeeNet, and then incorporated into the existing predictor to enable a deviation-aware prediction manner, which, for the first time, allows for information transmit across adjacent prediction units. We design two versions of DeFeeNet as MLP-based and GRU-based, respectively. On Human3.6M and more complicated BABEL, experimental results indicate that our proposed network improves consecutive human motion prediction performance regardless of the basic model.

Frequency Decomposition to Tap the Potential of Single Domain for Generalization

Domain generalization (DG), aiming at models able to work on multiple unseen domains, is a must-have characteristic of general artificial intelligence. DG based on single source domain training data is more challenging due to the lack of comparable information to help identify domain invariant features. In this paper, it is determined that the domain invariant features could be contained in the single source domain training samples, then the task is to find proper ways to extract such domain invariant features from the single source domain samples. An assumption is made that the domain invariant features are closely related to the frequency. Then, a new method that learns through multiple frequency domains is proposed. The key idea is, dividing the frequency domain of each original image into multiple subdomains, and learning features in the subdomain by a designed two branches network. In this way, the model is enforced to learn features from more samples of the specifically limited spectrum, which increases the possibility of obtaining the domain invariant features that might have previously been defiladed by easily learned features. Extensive experimental investigation reveals that 1) frequency decomposition can help the model learn features that are difficult to learn. 2) the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods of single-source domain generalization.

Meta-Auxiliary Learning for Adaptive Human Pose Prediction

Predicting high-fidelity future human poses, from a historically observed sequence, is decisive for intelligent robots to interact with humans. Deep end-to-end learning approaches, which typically train a generic pre-trained model on external datasets and then directly apply it to all test samples, emerge as the dominant solution to solve this issue. Despite encouraging progress, they remain non-optimal, as the unique properties (e.g., motion style, rhythm) of a specific sequence cannot be adapted. More generally, at test-time, once encountering unseen motion categories (out-of-distribution), the predicted poses tend to be unreliable. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel test-time adaptation framework that leverages two self-supervised auxiliary tasks to help the primary forecasting network adapt to the test sequence. In the testing phase, our model can adjust the model parameters by several gradient updates to improve the generation quality. However, due to catastrophic forgetting, both auxiliary tasks typically tend to the low ability to automatically present the desired positive incentives for the final prediction performance. For this reason, we also propose a meta-auxiliary learning scheme for better adaptation. In terms of general setup, our approach obtains higher accuracy, and under two new experimental designs for out-of-distribution data (unseen subjects and categories), achieves significant improvements.

ODDFUZZ: Discovering Java Deserialization Vulnerabilities via Structure-Aware Directed Greybox Fuzzing

Java deserialization vulnerability is a severe threat in practice. Researchers have proposed static analysis solutions to locate candidate vulnerabilities and fuzzing solutions to generate proof-of-concept (PoC) serialized objects to trigger them. However, existing solutions have limited effectiveness and efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid solution ODDFUZZ to efficiently discover Java deserialization vulnerabilities. First, ODDFUZZ performs lightweight static taint analysis to identify candidate gadget chains that may cause deserialization vulner-abilities. In this step, ODDFUZZ tries to locate all candidates and avoid false negatives. Then, ODDFUZZ performs directed greybox fuzzing (DGF) to explore those candidates and generate PoC testcases to mitigate false positives. Specifically, ODDFUZZ applies a structure-aware seed generation method to guarantee the validity of the testcases, and adopts a novel hybrid feedback and a step-forward strategy to guide the directed fuzzing. We implemented a prototype of ODDFUZZ and evaluated it on the popular Java deserialization repository ysoserial. Results show that, ODDFUZZ could discover 16 out of 34 known gadget chains, while two state-of-the-art baselines only identify three of them. In addition, we evaluated ODDFUZZ on real-world applications including Oracle WebLogic Server, Apache Dubbo, Sonatype Nexus, and protostuff, and found six previously unreported exploitable gadget chains with five CVEs assigned.

FengWu: Pushing the Skillful Global Medium-range Weather Forecast beyond 10 Days Lead

We present FengWu, an advanced data-driven global medium-range weather forecast system based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Different from existing data-driven weather forecast methods, FengWu solves the medium-range forecast problem from a multi-modal and multi-task perspective. Specifically, a deep learning architecture equipped with model-specific encoder-decoders and cross-modal fusion Transformer is elaborately designed, which is learned under the supervision of an uncertainty loss to balance the optimization of different predictors in a region-adaptive manner. Besides this, a replay buffer mechanism is introduced to improve medium-range forecast performance. With 39-year data training based on the ERA5 reanalysis, FengWu is able to accurately reproduce the atmospheric dynamics and predict the future land and atmosphere states at 37 vertical levels on a 0.25° latitude-longitude resolution. Hindcasts of 6-hourly weather in 2018 based on ERA5 demonstrate that FengWu performs better than GraphCast in predicting 80\% of the 880 reported predictands, e.g., reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) of 10-day lead global z500 prediction from 733 to 651 $m^{2}/s^2$. In addition, the inference cost of each iteration is merely 600ms on NVIDIA Tesla A100 hardware. The results suggest that FengWu can significantly improve the forecast skill and extend the skillful global medium-range weather forecast out to 10.75 days lead (with ACC of z500 > 0.6) for the first time.
