Hybrid-drive pressure suppressing implosion instabilities and offering nonstagnation hotspot ignition with low convergence ratio for high-gain inertial fusion

In laser-drive ICF, hybrid drive (HD) combined direct drive (DD) and indirect drive (ID) offers a smoothed HD pressure $P_{HD}$, far higher than the ablation pressure in ID and DD, to suppress hydrodynamic instabilities. In this letter, simulations of a new robust HD ignition target show that maximal HD pressure as high as $P_{HD} \sim$ 650 Mbar driven by a novel "bulldozer" effect is achieved, resulting in nonstagnation hotspot ignition at the convergence ratio $C_r \sim $23, and finally, fusion energy gain $\sim$ 10 in total laser energy = 1.42 MJ. Two-dimensional simulations have confirmed that hydrodynamic instabilities are suppressed. A well-fitted scale of maximal HD pressure $P_{HD}$ (Mbar)= $BE_{DD}^{1/4} T_r$ is found from simulations of different targets and laser energies as long as $T_r> 160$ eV, where B is the constant depending on ablator materials, $E_{DD}$ in kJ is DD laser energy and $T_r$ in 100 eV is radiation temperature depending on ID laser energy $E_{ID}$. $P_{HD}\geq$ 450 Mbar is requested for hotspot ignition. This scale from "bulldozer" effect is also available as $E_{DD}$ is reduced to kJ. Experiments have verified $P_{HD}$ about 3.5 times radiation ablation pressure for CH ablator using $E_{ID}=43$ kJ ($T_r \simeq$200 eV) and $E_{DD}$=3.6 kJ, also shown that both backscattering fraction and hot-electron energy fraction for DD laser intensity $\sim 1.8 \times 10^{15} {\rm w\cdot cm^{-2}}$ are about a third of the traditional DD laser-plasma interaction

On Performance of Multiscale Sparse Fast Fourier Transform Algorithm

Computing the Sparse Fast Fourier Transform(sFFT) of a K-sparse signal of size N has emerged as a critical topic for a long time. The sFFT algorithms decrease the runtime and sampling complexity by taking advantage of the signal inherent characteristics that a large number of signals are sparse in the frequency domain(e.g., sensors, video data, audio, medical image, etc.). The first stage of sFFT is frequency bucketization through one of these filters: Dirichlet kernel filter, flat filter, aliasing filter, etc. Compared to other sFFT algorithms, the sFFT algorithms using the flat filter is more convenient and efficient because the filtered signal is concentrated both in the time domain and frequency domain. Up to now, three sFFT algorithms sFFT1.0, sFFT2.0, sFFT3.0 algorithm have been proposed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) in 2013. Still, the sFFT4.0 algorithm using the multiscale approach method has not been implemented yet. This paper will discuss this algorithm comprehensively in theory and implement it in practice. It is proved that the performance of the sFFT4.0 algorithm depends on two parameters. The runtime and sampling complexity are in direct ratio to the multiscale parameter and in inverse ratio to the extension parameter. The robustness is in direct ratio to the extension parameter and in inverse ratio to the multiscale parameter. Compared with three similar algorithms or other four types of algorithms, the sFFT4.0 algorithm has excellent runtime and sampling complexity that ten to one hundred times better than the fftw algorithm, although the robustness of the algorithm is medium.

On Performance of Sparse Fast Fourier Transform Algorithms Using the Aliasing Filter

Computing the Sparse Fast Fourier Transform(sFFT) of a K-sparse signal of size N has emerged as a critical topic for a long time. There are mainly two stages in the sFFT: frequency bucketization and spectrum reconstruction. Frequency bucketization is equivalent to hashing the frequency coefficients into B buckets through one of these filters: Dirichlet kernel filter, flat filter, aliasing filter, etc. The spectrum reconstruction is equivalent to identifying frequencies that are isolated in their buckets. More than forty different sFFT algorithms compute Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) by their unique methods so far. In order to use them properly, the urgent topic of great concern is how to analyze and evaluate the performance of these algorithms in theory and practice. The paper mainly discusses the sFFT Algorithms using the aliasing filter. In the first part, the paper introduces the technique of three frameworks: the one-shot framework based on the compressed sensing(CS) solver, the peeling framework based on the bipartite graph and the iterative framework based on the binary tree search. Then, we get the conclusion of the performance of six corresponding algorithms: sFFT-DT1.0, sFFT-DT2.0, sFFT-DT3.0, FFAST, R-FFAST and DSFFT algorithm in theory. In the second part, we make two categories of experiments for computing the signals of different SNR, different N, different K by a standard testing platform and record the run time, percentage of the signal sampled and L0, L1, L2 error both in the exactly sparse case and general sparse case. The result of experiments satisfies the inferences obtained in theory.

Performance Analysis and Optimization for the MAC Protocol in UAV-based IoT Network

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have played an important role in air-ground integration network. Especially in Internet of Things (IoT) services, UAV equipped with communication equipments is widely adopted as a mobile base station (BS) for data collection from IoT devices on the ground. In this paper, we consider an air-ground network in which the UAV flies straightly to collect information from the IoT devices in a 2-D plane based on the CSMA/CA protocol. Due to UAV's continuous mobility, the communication durations of devices in different locations with UAV are not only time-limited, but also vary from each other. To analyze the throughput performance of uplink multiple access control (MAC) protocol, we propose a new analysis model to deal with the communications heterogeneity in the network. Firstly, we divide the devices in the coverage into different clusters according to their communication durations. Then, a quitting probability indicating the probability that a device quits the UAV's coverage at each time slot is clarified. A modified three-dimensional Markov chain model adopting the quitting probability and cluster division is developed for the performance analysis. Besides, we also propose a modified CSMA/CA protocol which fully considers the heterogeneity of the access time and adaptively allocates the time resource among the devices in different clusters. Finally, the effects of retry limit, initial contention window size, the density of the devices, UAVs speed and coverage area are discussed in the simulation section.

Sampling and Inference of Networked Dynamics using Log-Koopman Nonlinear Graph Fourier Transform

Networked nonlinear dynamics underpin the complex functionality of many engineering, social, biological, and ecological systems. Monitoring the networked dynamics via the minimum subset of nodes is essential for a variety of scientific and operational purposes. When there is a lack of a explicit model and networked signal space, traditional evolution analysis and non-convex methods are insufficient. An important data-driven state-of-the-art method use the Koopman operator to generate a linear evolution model for a vector-valued observable of original state-space. As a result, one can derive a sampling strategy via the linear evolution property of observable. However, current polynomial Koopman operators result in a large sampling space due to: (i) the large size of polynomial based observables ($O(N^2)$, $N$ number of nodes in network), and (ii) not factoring in the nonlinear dependency between observables. In this work, to achieve linear scaling ($O(N)$) and a small set of sampling nodes, we propose to combine a novel Log-Koopman operator and nonlinear Graph Fourier Transform (NL-GFT) scheme. First, the Log-Koopman operator is able to reduce the size of observables by transforming multiplicative poly-observable to logarithm summation. Second, a nonlinear GFT concept and sampling theory are provided to exploit the nonlinear dependence of observables for Koopman linearized evolution analysis. Combined, the sampling and reconstruction algorithms are designed and demonstrated on two established application areas. The results demonstrate that the proposed Log-Koopman NL-GFT scheme can (i) linearize unknown nonlinear dynamics using $O(N)$ observables, and (ii) achieve lower number of sampling nodes, compared with the state-of-the art polynomial Koopman linear evolution analysis.

Anti-Aging Scheduling in Single-Server Queues: A Systematic and Comparative Study

The Age-of-Information (AoI) is a new performance metric recently proposed for measuring the freshness of information in information-update systems. In this work, we conduct a systematic and comparative study to investigate the impact of scheduling policies on the AoI performance in single-server queues and provide useful guidelines for the design of AoI-efficient scheduling policies. Specifically, we first perform extensive simulations to demonstrate that the update-size information can be leveraged for achieving a substantially improved AoI compared to non-size-based (or arrival-time-based) policies. Then, by utilizing both the update-size and arrival-time information, we propose three AoI-based policies. Observing improved AoI performance of policies that allow service preemption and that prioritize informative updates, we further propose preemptive, informative, AoI-based scheduling policies. Our simulation results show that such policies empirically achieve the best AoI performance among all the considered policies. However, compared to the best delay-efficient policies (such as Shortest-Remaining-Processing-Time (SRPT)), the AoI improvement is rather marginal in the settings with exogenous arrivals. Interestingly, we also prove sample-path equivalence between some size-based policies and AoI-based policies. This provides an intuitive explanation for why some size-based policies (such as SRPT) achieve a very good AoI performance.

Improving Resistance to Adversarial Deformations by Regularizing Gradients

Improving the resistance of deep neural networks against adversarial attacks is important for deploying models to realistic applications. However, most defense methods are designed to defend against intensity perturbations and ignore location perturbations, which should be equally important for deep model security. In this paper, we focus on adversarial deformations, a typical class of location perturbations, and propose a flow gradient regularization to improve the resistance of models. Theoretically, we prove that, compared with input gradient regularization, regularizing flow gradients is able to get a tighter bound. Over multiple datasets, architectures, and adversarial deformations, our empirical results indicate that models trained with flow gradients can acquire a better resistance than trained with input gradients with a large margin, and also better than adversarial training. Moreover, compared with directly training with adversarial deformations, our method can achieve better results in unseen attacks, and combining these two methods can improve the resistance further.

Pressure Engineering of the Dirac Fermions in Quasi-One-Dimensional Tl$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$

Topological band dispersions other than the standard Dirac or Weyl fermions have garnered the increasing interest in materials science. Among them, the cubic Dirac fermions were recently proposed in the family of quasi-one-dimensional conductors A$_2$Mo$_6$X$_6$ (A= Na, K, In, Tl; X= S, Se, Te), where the band crossing is characterized by a linear dispersion in one $k$-space direction but the cubic dispersion in the plane perpendicular to it. It is not yet clear, however, how the external perturbations can alter these nontrivial carriers and ultimately induce a new distinct quantum phase. Here we study the evolution of Dirac fermions, in particular the cubic Dirac crossing, under external pressure in the representative quasi-one-dimensional Tl$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ via the first-principles calculations. Specifically, it is found that the topological properties, including the bulk Dirac crossings and the topological surface states, change progressively under pressure up to 50 GPa where it undergoes a structural transition from the hexagonal phase to body-centered tetragonal phase. Above 50 GPa, the system is more likely to be topologically trivial. Further, we also investigate its phonon spectra, which reveals a gradual depletion of the negative phonon modes with pressure, consistent with the more three-dimensional Fermi surface in the high-pressure phase. Our work may provide a useful guideline for further experimental search and the band engineering of the topologically nontrivial fermions in this intriguing state of matter.

Leaf Water Status Monitoring by Scattering Effects at Terahertz Frequencies

The applications of terahertz (THz) radiation for plant water status monitoring require systematic studies on interaction of THz wave and plants. Here, we present theoretical investigations on scattering behavior of THz waves reflected by and transmitting through a plant leaf under different water content. A theoretical model combining integral equation and radiative transfer theory is presented to fit the measured data. Good agreement confirms the availability of the model for water status evaluation when variation of leaf thickness and surface roughness is considered. We investigate the applicability of THz waves for water status monitoring in reflection and transmission geometries under different temperatures, salinities and polarizations.

Question Guided Modular Routing Networks for Visual Question Answering

This paper studies the task of Visual Question Answering (VQA), which is topical in Multimedia community recently. Particularly, we explore two critical research problems existed in VQA: (1) efficiently fusing the visual and textual modalities; (2) enabling the visual reasoning ability of VQA models in answering complex questions. To address these challenging problems, a novel Question Guided Modular Routing Networks (QGMRN) has been proposed in this paper. Particularly, The QGMRN is composed of visual, textual and routing network. The visual and textual network serve as the backbones for the generic feature extractors of visual and textual modalities. QGMRN can fuse the visual and textual modalities at multiple semantic levels. Typically, the visual reasoning is facilitated by the routing network in a discrete and stochastic way by using Gumbel-Softmax trick for module selection. When the input reaches a certain modular layer, routing network newly proposed in this paper, dynamically selects a portion of modules from that layer to process the input depending on the question features generated by the textual network. It can also learn to reason by routing between the generic modules without additional supervision information or expert knowledge. Benefiting from the dynamic routing mechanism, QGMRN can outperform the previous classical VQA methods by a large margin and achieve the competitive results against the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, attention mechanism is integrated into our QGMRN model and thus can further boost the model performance. Empirically, extensive experiments on the CLEVR and CLEVR-Humans datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed model, and the state-of-the-art performance has been achieved.

Identification of Deep Network Generated Images Using Disparities in Color Components

With the powerful deep network architectures, such as generative adversarial networks, one can easily generate photorealistic images. Although the generated images are not dedicated for fooling human or deceiving biometric authentication systems, research communities and public media have shown great concerns on the security issues caused by these images. This paper addresses the problem of identifying deep network generated (DNG) images. Taking the differences between camera imaging and DNG image generation into considerations, we analyze the disparities between DNG images and real images in different color components. We observe that the DNG images are more distinguishable from real ones in the chrominance components, especially in the residual domain. Based on these observations, we propose a feature set to capture color image statistics for identifying DNG images. Additionally, we evaluate several detection situations, including the training-testing data are matched or mismatched in image sources or generative models and detection with only real images. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately identify DNG images and outperforms existing methods when the training and testing data are mismatched. Moreover, when the GAN model is unknown, our methods also achieves good performance with one-class classification by using only real images for training.

Crop Water Status Monitoring by Terahertz Imaging

We demonstrate the reliability and applicability of THz imaging for destructive and non-destructive water status monitoring of winter wheat leaves. Based on the measured THz transmission amplitude, we find that the water loss in the distal region is less than that in the basal region during the nature dehydration process. A high correlation is shown between the transmitted THz signal and water content level measured by gravimetric weighing method during dehydration and after rehydration. The obtained results show that the water content in winter wheat leaves can be measured destructively and non-destructively with a high accuracy, using terahertz waves in a transmission geometry.

On the radial velocity calibrations in the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey of Nebulae

Accurate radial velocity determinations of optical emission lines (i.e. [NII]$λλ$6548,6584, H$α$, and [SII]$λλ$6717,6731) are very important for investigating the kinematics and dynamics properties of nebulae. The second stage survey program of Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) has started a sub-survey of nebulae (MRS-N) which will spectroscopically observe the optical emission lines of a large sample of nebulae near the Galactic plane. Until now, 15 MRS-N plates have been observed from 2017 September to 2019 June. Based on fitting the sky emission lines in the red band spectra of MRS-N, we investigate the precision of wavelength calibration and find there are systematic deviations of radial velocities (RVs) from $\sim$0.2 to 4 km/s for different plates. Especially for the plates obtained in 2018 March, the systematic deviations of RVs can be as large as $\sim$4 km/s, which then go down to $\sim$0.2-0.5 km/s at the end of 2018 and January 2019. A RVs calibration function is proposed for these MRS-N plates, which can simultaneously and successfully calibration the systematic deviations and improve the precision of RVs.

Topological Dirac states in a layered telluride TaPdTe$_5$ with quasi-one-dimensional PdTe$_2$ chains

We report the synthesis and systematic studies of a new layered ternary telluride TaPdTe5 with quasi-one-dimensional PdTe2 chains. This compound crystalizes in a layered orthorhombic structure with space group Cmcm. Analysis of its curved field-dependent Hall resistivity, using the two-band model, indicates the hole-dominated transport with a high mobility $μ_h$ = 2.38 $\times$ 10$^3$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at low temperatures. The in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) displays significant anisotropy with field applied along the crystallographic $b$ axis. The MR with the current applied along the $c$-axis is also measured in high magnetic fields up to 51.7 T. Remarkably, it follows a power-law dependence and reaches (9.5 $\times$ 10$^3$)% at 2.1 K without any signature of saturation. The De Haas-van Alphen oscillations show a small Fermi-surface pocket with a nontrivial Berry phase. The Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are detected at low temperatures and under magnetic fields above 28.5 T. Two effective masses $m^*$ (0.26$m_e$ and 0.41$m_e$) are extracted from the oscillatory SdH data. Our first-principles calculations unveil a topological Dirac cone in its surface states, and, in particular, the topological index indicates that TaPdTe$_5$ is a topologically nontrivial material.

Interpreting the Latent Space of GANs via Correlation Analysis for Controllable Concept Manipulation

Generative adversarial nets (GANs) have been successfully applied in many fields like image generation, inpainting, super-resolution and drug discovery, etc., by now, the inner process of GANs is far from been understood. To get deeper insight of the intrinsic mechanism of GANs, in this paper, a method for interpreting the latent space of GANs by analyzing the correlation between latent variables and the corresponding semantic contents in generated images is proposed. Unlike previous methods that focus on dissecting models via feature visualization, the emphasis of this work is put on the variables in latent space, i.e. how the latent variables affect the quantitative analysis of generated results. Given a pretrained GAN model with weights fixed, the latent variables are intervened to analyze their effect on the semantic content in generated images. A set of controlling latent variables can be derived for specific content generation, and the controllable semantic content manipulation be achieved. The proposed method is testified on the datasets Fashion-MNIST and UT Zappos50K, experiment results show its effectiveness.

Multitask Non-Autoregressive Model for Human Motion Prediction

Human motion prediction, which aims at predicting future human skeletons given the past ones, is a typical sequence-to-sequence problem. Therefore, extensive efforts have been continued on exploring different RNN-based encoder-decoder architectures. However, by generating target poses conditioned on the previously generated ones, these models are prone to bringing issues such as error accumulation problem. In this paper, we argue that such issue is mainly caused by adopting autoregressive manner. Hence, a novel Non-auToregressive Model (NAT) is proposed with a complete non-autoregressive decoding scheme, as well as a context encoder and a positional encoding module. More specifically, the context encoder embeds the given poses from temporal and spatial perspectives. The frame decoder is responsible for predicting each future pose independently. The positional encoding module injects positional signal into the model to indicate temporal order. Moreover, a multitask training paradigm is presented for both low-level human skeleton prediction and high-level human action recognition, resulting in the convincing improvement for the prediction task. Our approach is evaluated on Human3.6M and CMU-Mocap benchmarks and outperforms state-of-the-art autoregressive methods.

LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectral Survey of Galactic Nebula (LAMOST MRS-N): An overview of Scientific goals and Survey plan

Since Sep. 2018, LAMOST started the medium-resolution (R $\sim 7500$) spectral survey (MRS). We proposed the spectral survey of Galactic nebulae, including \hii\ regions, HH objects, supernova remnants, planetary nebulae and the special stars with MRS (LAMOST MRS-N). LAMOST MRS-N covers about 1700 square degrees of the northern Galactic plane within $40^\circ < l < 215^\circ$ and $-5^\circ < b < 5^\circ$. In this 5-year survey, we plan to observe about 500 thousand nebulae spectra. According to the commissioning observations, the nebulae spectra can provide precise radial velocity with uncertainty less than 1 km s$^{-1}$. These high-precision spectral data are of great significance to our understanding of star formation and evolution.

CALPA-NET: Channel-pruning-assisted Deep Residual Network for Steganalysis of Digital Images

Over the past few years, detection performance improvements of deep-learning based steganalyzers have been usually achieved through structure expansion. However, excessive expanded structure results in huge computational cost, storage overheads, and consequently difficulty in training and deployment. In this paper we propose CALPA-NET, a ChAnneL-Pruning-Assisted deep residual network architecture search approach to shrink the network structure of existing vast, over-parameterized deep-learning based steganalyzers. We observe that the broad inverted-pyramid structure of existing deep-learning based steganalyzers might contradict the well-established model diversity oriented philosophy, and therefore is not suitable for steganalysis. Then a hybrid criterion combined with two network pruning schemes is introduced to adaptively shrink every involved convolutional layer in a data-driven manner. The resulting network architecture presents a slender bottleneck-like structure. We have conducted extensive experiments on BOSSBase+BOWS2 dataset, more diverse ALASKA dataset and even a large-scale subset extracted from ImageNet CLS-LOC dataset. The experimental results show that the model structure generated by our proposed CALPA-NET can achieve comparative performance with less than two percent of parameters and about one third FLOPs compared to the original steganalytic model. The new model possesses even better adaptivity, transferability, and scalability.
