The $B(E2)$ anomaly: Evidence for a low-lying mixed-symmetry collective excitation mode

Exceptionally low values of the ratio of electric quadrupole transition rates, $B_{4/2}\equiv B(E2;4^+_1\rightarrow2^+_1)/B(E2;2^+_1\rightarrow0^+_{\mathrm{gs}})<1$, have been observed in neutron-deficient nuclei near $N\approx94$ (W, Os, Pt) and $N\approx62$ (Te, Xe) with few and comparable numbers of valence nucleons outside closed shells. Remarkably, the suppressed $B_{4/2}$ ratios coincide with low-lying energy level patterns characteristic of collective motion. Standard approaches, including large-scale shell model, collective models, and density functional theory, fail to reproduce this behavior, commonly referred to as the $B{4/2}$ (or $B(E2)$) anomaly. Recent work has reproduced the effect in selected Pt and Os isotopes via mapping a triaxial rotor Hamiltonian onto the interacting boson model (IBM), attributing it to triaxial rotational motion. However, this interpretation is unexpected as collectivity typically emerges first through vibrational modes with increasing valence nucleon number along isotopic chains. Here, we address this discrepancy using an extended IBM Hamiltonian across nuclei exhibiting the anomaly, benchmarked against large-scale shell model calculations, and propose that the $B(E2)$ anomaly arises from a low-lying mixed-symmetry collective mode that bridges single-particle and collective dynamics.

Direct proton transfer on $^{46}$Ar supports the presence of a charge density bubble linked to a novel nuclear structure below $^{48}$Ca

The $^{46}$Ar($^3$He,d)$^{47}$K reaction was performed in inverse kinematics using a radioactive $^{46}$Ar beam produced by the SPIRAL1 facility at GANIL and a cryogenic $^{3}$He target. The AGATA-MUGAST-VAMOS setup allowed the coincident measurement of the $\gamma$ rays, deuterons and recoiling $^{47}$K isotopes produced by the reaction. The relative cross sections towards the proton-addition states in $^{47}$K point towards a depletion of the $\pi s_{1/2}$ shell. The experimental findings are in good agreement with ab initio calculations, which predict that $^{46}$Ar exhibits a charge density bubble associated with a pronounced proton closed-shell character.

Rapid imaging of special nuclear materials for nuclear non-proliferation and terrorism prevention

We introduce a novel technique, neutron-gamma emission tomography (NGET), for rapid detection, 3D imaging, and characterization of special nuclear materials like weapons grade plutonium and uranium. The technique is adapted from fundamental nuclear physics research and represents a paradigm shift in the approach to detection and imaging of small quantities of such materials. The method uses a granular detection system based on fast organic scintillators, measuring the characteristic fast time and energy correlations between particles emitted in nuclear fission processes. The radically new approach of using such correlations in real time in conjunction with modern machine learning techniques provides unprecedented imaging efficiency, spatial resolution and ultra-low false alarm rates, addressing global security threats from terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as different nuclear accident scenarios and environmental radiological surveying.
