Measurements of the growth and saturation of electron Weibel instability in optical-field ionized plasmas

The temporal evolution of the magnetic field associated with electron thermal Weibel instability in optical-field ionized plasmas is measured using ultrashort (1.8 ps), relativistic (45 MeV) electron bunches from a linear accelerator. The self-generated magnetic fields are found to self-organize into a quasi-static structure consistent with a helicoid topology within a few ps and such a structure lasts for tens of ps in underdense plasmas. The measured growth rate agrees well with that predicted by the kinetic theory of plasmas taking into account collisions. Magnetic trapping is identified as the dominant saturation mechanism.

Cognitive Biomarker Prioritization in Alzheimer's Disease using Brain Morphometric Data

Background:Cognitive assessments represent the most common clinical routine for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Given a large number of cognitive assessment tools and time-limited office visits, it is important to determine a proper set of cognitive tests for different subjects. Most current studies create guidelines of cognitive test selection for a targeted population, but they are not customized for each individual subject. In this manuscript, we develop a machine learning paradigm enabling personalized cognitive assessments prioritization. Method: We adapt a newly developed learning-to-rank approach PLTR to implement our paradigm. This method learns the latent scoring function that pushes the most effective cognitive assessments onto the top of the prioritization list. We also extend PLTR to better separate the most effective cognitive assessments and the less effective ones. Results: Our empirical study on the ADNI data shows that the proposed paradigm outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines on identifying and prioritizing individual-specific cognitive biomarkers. We conduct experiments in cross validation and level-out validation settings. In the two settings, our paradigm significantly outperforms the best baselines with improvement as much as 22.1% and 19.7%, respectively, on prioritizing cognitive features. Conclusions: The proposed paradigm achieves superior performance on prioritizing cognitive biomarkers. The cognitive biomarkers prioritized on top have great potentials to facilitate personalized diagnosis, disease subtyping, and ultimately precision medicine in AD.

Topological phonons in oxide perovskites controlled by light

Perovskite oxides exhibit a rich variety of structural phases hosting different physical phenomena that generate multiple technological applications. We find that topological phonons, i.e., nodal rings, nodal lines, and Weyl points, are ubiquitous in oxide perovskites in terms of structures (tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral), compounds (BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3), and external conditions (photoexcitation, strain, and temperature). In particular, in the tetragonal phase of these compounds, all types of topological phonons can simultaneously emerge when stabilized by photoexcitation, whereas the tetragonal phase stabilized by thermal fluctuations only hosts a more limited set of topological phonon states. Additionally, we find that the photoexcited carrier concentration can be used to tune the topological phonon states and induce topological transitions even without associated structural phase changes. Overall, we propose oxide perovskites as a versatile platform in which to study topological phonons and their manipulation with light.

Quantum simulations employing connected moments expansions

Further advancement of quantum computing (QC) is contingent on enabling many-body models that avoid deep circuits and excessive use of CNOT gates. To this end, we develop a QC approach employing finite-order connected moment expansions (CMX) and affordable procedures for initial state preparation. We demonstrate the performance of our approach employing several quantum variants of CMX through the classical emulations on the H2 molecule potential energy surface and the Anderson model with a broad range of correlation strength. The results show that our approach is robust and flexible. Good agreements with exact solutions can be maintained even at the dissociation and strong correlation limits.

Fast radio bursts: do repeaters and non-repeaters originate in statistically similar ensembles

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are the short, strong radio pulses lasting several milliseconds. They are subsequently identified, for the most part, as emanating from unknown objects at cosmological distances. At present, over one hundred FRBs have been verified, classified into two groups: repeating bursts (20 samples) and apparently non-repeating bursts (91 samples). Their origins, however, are still hotly debated. Here,we investigate the statistical classifications for the two groups of samples to see if the non-repeating and repeating FRBs have different origins by employing Anderson-Darling (A-D) test and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon (M-W-W) test. Firstly, by taking the pulse width as a statistical variant, we found that the repeating samples do not follow the Gaussian statistics (may belong to a chi-square distribution), although the overall data and non-repeating group do follow the Gaussian. Meanwhile, to investigate the statistical differences between the two groups, we turn to M-W-W test and notice that the two distributions have different origins. Secondly, we consider the FRB radio luminosity as a statistical variant, and find that both groups of samples can be regarded as the Gaussian distributions under the A-D test, although they have different origins according to M-W-W tests. Therefore, statistically, we can conclude that our classifications of both repeaters and non-repeaters are plausible, that the two FRB classes have different origins, or each has experienced distinctive phases or been subject to its own physical processes.

Rank Position Forecasting in Car Racing

Forecasting is challenging since uncertainty resulted from exogenous factors exists. This work investigates the rank position forecasting problem in car racing, which predicts the rank positions at the future laps for cars. Among the many factors that bring changes to the rank positions, pit stops are critical but irregular and rare. We found existing methods, including statistical models, machine learning regression models, and state-of-the-art deep forecasting model based on encoder-decoder architecture, all have limitations in the forecasting. By elaborative analysis of pit stops events, we propose a deep model, RankNet, with the cause effects decomposition that modeling the rank position sequence and pit stop events separately. It also incorporates probabilistic forecasting to model the uncertainty inside each sub-model. Through extensive experiments, RankNet demonstrates a strong performance improvement over the baselines, e.g., MAE improves more than 10% consistently, and is also more stable when adapting to unseen new data. Details of model optimization, performance profiling are presented. It is promising to provide useful forecasting tools for the car racing analysis and shine a light on solutions to similar challenging issues in general forecasting problems.

Observation of nonreciprocal magneto-optical scattering in nonencapsulated few-layered CrI3

Magneto-optical effect refers to a rotation of polarization plane, which has been widely studied in traditional ferromagnetic metal and insulator films and scarcely in two-dimensional layered materials. Here we uncover a new nonreciprocal magneto-inelastic light scattering effect in ferromagnetic few-layer CrI3. We observed a rotation of the polarization plane of inelastic light scattering between -20o and +60o that are tunable by an out-of-plane magnetic field from -2.5 to 2.5 T. It is experimentally observed that the degree of polarization can be magnetically manipulated between -20% and 85%. This work raises a new magneto-optical phenomenon and could create opportunities of applying 2D ferromagnetic materials in Raman lasing, topological photonics, and magneto-optical modulator for information transport and storage.

Gradient Estimates For $Δu + au^{p+1}=0$ And Liouville Theorems

In this short note, we use a unified method to consider the gradient estimates of the positive solution to the following nonlinear elliptic equation $Δu + au^{p+1}=0$ defined on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ where $a > 0$ and $ p <\frac{4}{n}$ or $a < 0$ and $p >0$ are two constants. For the case $a>0$, this improves considerably the previous known results except for the cases $\dim(M)=4$ and supplements the results for the case $\dim(M)\leq 2$. For the case $a<0$ and $p>0$, we also improve considerably the previous related results. When the Ricci curvature of $(M,g)$ is nonnegative, we also obtain a Liouville-type theorem for the above equation.

Yau Type Gradient Estimates For $Δu + au(\log u)^{p}+bu=0$ On Riemannian Manifolds

In this paper, we consider the gradient estimates of the positive solutions to the following equation defined on a complete Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ $$Δu + au(\log u)^{p}+bu=0,$$ where $a, b\in \mathbb{R}$ and $p$ is a rational number with $p=\frac{k_1}{2k_2+1}\geq2$ where $k_1$ and $k_2$ are positive integer numbers. we obtain the gradient bound of a positive solution to the equation which does not depend on the bounds of the solution and the Laplacian of the distance function on $(M, g)$. Our results can be viewed as a natural extension of Yau's estimates on positive harmonic function.

The layer number of grids

The peeling process is defined as follows: starting with a finite point set $X \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, we repeatedly remove the set of vertices of the convex hull of the current set of points. The number of peeling steps needed to completely delete the set $X$ is called the layer number of $X$. In this paper, we study the layer number of the $d$-dimensional integer grid $[n]^d$. We prove that for every $d \geq 1$, the layer number of $[n]^d$ is at least $Ω\left(n^\frac{2d}{d+1}\right)$. On the other hand, we show that for every $d\geq 3$, it takes at most $O(n^{d - 9/11})$ steps to fully remove $[n]^d$. Our approach is based on an enhancement of the method used by Har-Peled and Lidický for solving the 2-dimensional case.

Mechanism of carrier localization in doped perovskite nanocrystals for bright emission

Nanocrystals based on metal-halide perovskites offer a promising material platform for highly efficient lighting. Using transient optical spectroscopy, we study excitation recombination dynamics in manganese-doped CsPb(Cl,Br)3 perovskite nanocrystals. We find an increase in the intrinsic excitonic radiative recombination rate upon doping, which is typically a challenging material property to tailor. Supported by ab initio calculations, we can attribute the enhanced emission rates to increased exciton localization through lattice periodicity breaking from Mn dopants, which increases exciton effective masses and overlap of electron and hole wavefunctions and thus the oscillator strength. Our report of a fundamental strategy for improving luminescence efficiencies in perovskite nanocrystals will be valuable for maximizing efficiencies in light-emitting applications.

Learning Pose-invariant 3D Object Reconstruction from Single-view Images

Learning to reconstruct 3D shapes using 2D images is an active research topic, with benefits of not requiring expensive 3D data. However, most work in this direction requires multi-view images for each object instance as training supervision, which oftentimes does not apply in practice. In this paper, we relax the common multi-view assumption and explore a more challenging yet more realistic setup of learning 3D shape from only single-view images. The major difficulty lies in insufficient constraints that can be provided by single view images, which leads to the problem of pose entanglement in learned shape space. As a result, reconstructed shapes vary along input pose and have poor accuracy. We address this problem by taking a novel domain adaptation perspective, and propose an effective adversarial domain confusion method to learn pose-disentangled compact shape space. Experiments on single-view reconstruction show effectiveness in solving pose entanglement, and the proposed method achieves on-par reconstruction accuracy with state-of-the-art with higher efficiency.

Hybrid Collaborative Filtering Models for Clinical Search Recommendation

With increasing and extensive use of electronic health records, clinicians are often under time pressure when they need to retrieve important information efficiently among large amounts of patients' health records in clinics. While a search function can be a useful alternative to browsing through a patient's record, it is cumbersome for clinicians to search repeatedly for the same or similar information on similar patients. Under such circumstances, there is a critical need to build effective recommender systems that can generate accurate search term recommendations for clinicians. In this manuscript, we developed a hybrid collaborative filtering model using patients' encounter and search term information to recommend the next search terms for clinicians to retrieve important information fast in clinics. For each patient, the model will recommend terms that either have high co-occurrence frequencies with his/her most recent ICD codes or are highly relevant to the most recent search terms on this patient. We have conducted comprehensive experiments to evaluate the proposed model, and the experimental results demonstrate that our model can outperform all the state-of-the-art baseline methods for top-N search term recommendation on different datasets.

Least Squares Estimator for Vasicek Model Driven by Sub-fractional Brownian Processes from Discrete Observations

We study the parameter estimation problem of Vasicek Model driven by sub-fractional Brownian processes from discrete observations, and let {S_t^H,t>=0} denote a sub-fractional Brownian motion whose Hurst parameter 1/2<H<1 . The studies are as follows: firstly, two unknown parameters in the model are estimated by the least squares method. Secondly, the strong consistency and the asymptotic distribution of the estimators are studied respectively. Finally, our estimators are validated by numerical simulation.

Topological-darkness-assisted phase regulation for atomically thin meta-optics

Two-dimensional (2D) noble-metal dichalcogenides have emerged as a new platform for the realization of versatile flat optics with a considerable degree of miniaturization. However, light field manipulation at the atomic scale is widely considered unattainable since the vanishing thickness and intrinsic losses of 2D materials completely suppress both resonances and phase accumulation effects. Empowered by conventionally perceived adverse effects of intrinsic losses, we show that the structured PtSe2 films integrated with a uniform substrate can regulate nontrivial singular phase and realize atomic-thick meta-optics in the presence of topological darkness. We experimentally demonstrate a series of atomic-thick binary meta-optics that allows angle-robust and high unit-thickness diffraction efficiency of 0.96%/nm in visible frequencies, given its thickness of merely 4.3 nm. Our results unlock the potential of a new class of 2D flat optics for light field manipulation at an atomic thickness.

Bright excitons with negative-mass electrons

Bound electron-hole excitonic states are generally not expected to form with charges of negative effective mass. We identify such excitons in a single layer of the semiconductor WSe2, where they give rise to narrow-band upconverted photoluminescence in the UV, at an energy of 1.66 eV above the first band-edge excitonic transition. Negative band curvature and strong electron-phonon coupling result in a cascaded phonon progression with equidistant peaks in the photoluminescence spectrum, resolvable to ninth order. Ab initio GW-BSE calculations with full electron-hole correlations unmask and explain the admixture of upper conduction-band states to this complex many-body excitation: an optically bright, bound exciton in resonance with the semiconductor continuum. This exciton is responsible for atomic-like quantum-interference phenomena such as electromagnetically induced transparency. Since band curvature can be tuned by pressure or strain, synthesis of exotic quasiparticles such as flat-band excitons with infinite reduced mass becomes feasible.

High-throughput injection-acceleration of electron bunches from a linear accelerator to a laser wakefield accelerator

Plasma-based accelerators (PBAs) driven by either intense lasers (laser wakefield accelerators, LWFAs) or particle beams (plasma wakefield accelerators, PWFAs), can accelerate charged particles at extremely high gradients compared to conventional radio-frequency (RF) accelerators. In the past two decades, great strides have been made in this field, making PBA a candidate for next-generation light sources and colliders. However, these challenging applications necessarily require beams with good stability, high quality, controllable polarization and excellent reproducibility. To date, such beams are generated only by conventional RF accelerators. Therefore, it is important to demonstrate the injection and acceleration of beams first produced using a conventional RF accelerator, by a PBA. In some recent studies on LWFA staging and external injection-acceleration in PWFA only a very small fraction (from below 0.1% to few percent) of the injected charge (the coupling efficiency) was accelerated. For future colliders where beam energy will need to be boosted using multiple stages, the coupling efficiency per stage must approach 100%. Here we report the first demonstration of external injection from a photocathode-RF-gun-based conventional linear accelerator (LINAC) into a LWFA and subsequent acceleration without any significant loss of charge or degradation of quality, which is achieved by properly shaping and matching the beam into the plasma structure. This is an important step towards realizing a high-throughput, multi-stage, high-energy, hybrid conventional-plasma accelerator.
