FineRec:Exploring Fine-grained Sequential Recommendation

Sequential recommendation is dedicated to offering items of interest for users based on their history behaviors. The attribute-opinion pairs, expressed by users in their reviews for items, provide the potentials to capture user preferences and item characteristics at a fine-grained level. To this end, we propose a novel framework FineRec that explores the attribute-opinion pairs of reviews to finely handle sequential recommendation. Specifically, we utilize a large language model to extract attribute-opinion pairs from reviews. For each attribute, a unique attribute-specific user-opinion-item graph is created, where corresponding opinions serve as the edges linking heterogeneous user and item nodes. To tackle the diversity of opinions, we devise a diversity-aware convolution operation to aggregate information within the graphs, enabling attribute-specific user and item representation learning. Ultimately, we present an interaction-driven fusion mechanism to integrate attribute-specific user/item representations across all attributes for generating recommendations. Extensive experiments conducted on several realworld datasets demonstrate the superiority of our FineRec over existing state-of-the-art methods. Further analysis also verifies the effectiveness of our fine-grained manner in handling the task.

Biologically-Plausible Topology Improved Spiking Actor Network for Efficient Deep Reinforcement Learning

The success of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is largely attributed to utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as function approximators. Recent advances in neuroscience have unveiled that the human brain achieves efficient reward-based learning, at least by integrating spiking neurons with spatial-temporal dynamics and network topologies with biologically-plausible connectivity patterns. This integration process allows spiking neurons to efficiently combine information across and within layers via nonlinear dendritic trees and lateral interactions. The fusion of these two topologies enhances the network's information-processing ability, crucial for grasping intricate perceptions and guiding decision-making procedures. However, ANNs and brain networks differ significantly. ANNs lack intricate dynamical neurons and only feature inter-layer connections, typically achieved by direct linear summation, without intra-layer connections. This limitation leads to constrained network expressivity. To address this, we propose a novel alternative for function approximator, the Biologically-Plausible Topology improved Spiking Actor Network (BPT-SAN), tailored for efficient decision-making in DRL. The BPT-SAN incorporates spiking neurons with intricate spatial-temporal dynamics and introduces intra-layer connections, enhancing spatial-temporal state representation and facilitating more precise biological simulations. Diverging from the conventional direct linear weighted sum, the BPT-SAN models the local nonlinearities of dendritic trees within the inter-layer connections. For the intra-layer connections, the BPT-SAN introduces lateral interactions between adjacent neurons, integrating them into the membrane potential formula to ensure accurate spike firing.

Fourier or Wavelet bases as counterpart self-attention in spikformer for efficient visual classification

Energy-efficient spikformer has been proposed by integrating the biologically plausible spiking neural network (SNN) and artificial Transformer, whereby the Spiking Self-Attention (SSA) is used to achieve both higher accuracy and lower computational cost. However, it seems that self-attention is not always necessary, especially in sparse spike-form calculation manners. In this paper, we innovatively replace vanilla SSA (using dynamic bases calculating from Query and Key) with spike-form Fourier Transform, Wavelet Transform, and their combinations (using fixed triangular or wavelets bases), based on a key hypothesis that both of them use a set of basis functions for information transformation. Hence, the Fourier-or-Wavelet-based spikformer (FWformer) is proposed and verified in visual classification tasks, including both static image and event-based video datasets. The FWformer can achieve comparable or even higher accuracies ($0.4\%$-$1.5\%$), higher running speed ($9\%$-$51\%$ for training and $19\%$-$70\%$ for inference), reduced theoretical energy consumption ($20\%$-$25\%$), and reduced GPU memory usage ($4\%$-$26\%$), compared to the standard spikformer. Our result indicates the continuous refinement of new Transformers, that are inspired either by biological discovery (spike-form), or information theory (Fourier or Wavelet Transform), is promising.

URS-NeRF: Unordered Rolling Shutter Bundle Adjustment for Neural Radiance Fields

We propose a novel rolling shutter bundle adjustment method for neural radiance fields (NeRF), which utilizes the unordered rolling shutter (RS) images to obtain the implicit 3D representation. Existing NeRF methods suffer from low-quality images and inaccurate initial camera poses due to the RS effect in the image, whereas, the previous method that incorporates the RS into NeRF requires strict sequential data input, limiting its widespread applicability. In constant, our method recovers the physical formation of RS images by estimating camera poses and velocities, thereby removing the input constraints on sequential data. Moreover, we adopt a coarse-to-fine training strategy, in which the RS epipolar constraints of the pairwise frames in the scene graph are used to detect the camera poses that fall into local minima. The poses detected as outliers are corrected by the interpolation method with neighboring poses. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method over state-of-the-art works and demonstrate that the reconstruction of 3D representations is not constrained by the requirement of video sequence input.

Epitaxial growth of high-quality GaAs on Si(001) using ultrathin buffer layers

The direct growth of III-V semiconductors on silicon holds tremendous potential for photonics applications. However, the inherent differences in their properties lead to defects in the epitaxial layer, including threading dislocations (TDs), antiphase boundaries (APBs), and thermal cracks, significantly impacting device performance. Current processes struggle to suppress these defects simultaneously, necessitating the development of methods to inhibit TDs and APBs in a thin buffer on silicon. This study introduces a GaSb buffer layer during GaAs epitaxy on a silicon (001) substrate. This approach successfully suppresses defect formation by promoting the formation of interfacial misfit dislocation (IMF) arrays at both the AlSb/Si and GaAs/GaSb interfaces. The resulting GaAs layer exhibits a step-flow surface with a rough mean square of approximately 3.8 nm and a full width at half maximum of 158 arcsec. Remarkably, the growth is achieved without any observable interfacial intermixing. Building on this platform, InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) are grown with a density of 3.8E10/cm2, emitting at a wavelength of 1288 nm. This breakthrough holds immense promise for developing high-quality GaAs films with reduced defect densities on silicon for O band lasers, laying the foundation for the mass production of silicon-based integrated circuits.

A Knowledge-enhanced Two-stage Generative Framework for Medical Dialogue Information Extraction

This paper focuses on term-status pair extraction from medical dialogues (MD-TSPE), which is essential in diagnosis dialogue systems and the automatic scribe of electronic medical records (EMRs). In the past few years, works on MD-TSPE have attracted increasing research attention, especially after the remarkable progress made by generative methods. However, these generative methods output a whole sequence consisting of term-status pairs in one stage and ignore integrating prior knowledge, which demands a deeper understanding to model the relationship between terms and infer the status of each term. This paper presents a knowledge-enhanced two-stage generative framework (KTGF) to address the above challenges. Using task-specific prompts, we employ a single model to complete the MD-TSPE through two phases in a unified generative form: we generate all terms the first and then generate the status of each generated term. In this way, the relationship between terms can be learned more effectively from the sequence containing only terms in the first phase, and our designed knowledge-enhanced prompt in the second phase can leverage the category and status candidates of the generated term for status generation. Furthermore, our proposed special status "not mentioned" makes more terms available and enriches the training data in the second phase, which is critical in the low-resource setting. The experiments on the Chunyu and CMDD datasets show that the proposed method achieves superior results compared to the state-of-the-art models in the full training and low-resource settings.

Spike-driven Transformer V2: Meta Spiking Neural Network Architecture Inspiring the Design of Next-generation Neuromorphic Chips

Neuromorphic computing, which exploits Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) on neuromorphic chips, is a promising energy-efficient alternative to traditional AI. CNN-based SNNs are the current mainstream of neuromorphic computing. By contrast, no neuromorphic chips are designed especially for Transformer-based SNNs, which have just emerged, and their performance is only on par with CNN-based SNNs, offering no distinct advantage. In this work, we propose a general Transformer-based SNN architecture, termed as ``Meta-SpikeFormer", whose goals are: 1) Lower-power, supports the spike-driven paradigm that there is only sparse addition in the network; 2) Versatility, handles various vision tasks; 3) High-performance, shows overwhelming performance advantages over CNN-based SNNs; 4) Meta-architecture, provides inspiration for future next-generation Transformer-based neuromorphic chip designs. Specifically, we extend the Spike-driven Transformer in \citet{yao2023spike} into a meta architecture, and explore the impact of structure, spike-driven self-attention, and skip connection on its performance. On ImageNet-1K, Meta-SpikeFormer achieves 80.0\% top-1 accuracy (55M), surpassing the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) SNN baselines (66M) by 3.7\%. This is the first direct training SNN backbone that can simultaneously supports classification, detection, and segmentation, obtaining SOTA results in SNNs. Finally, we discuss the inspiration of the meta SNN architecture for neuromorphic chip design. Source code and models are available at \url{https://github.com/BICLab/Spike-Driven-Transformer-V2}.

SSCFormer: Push the Limit of Chunk-wise Conformer for Streaming ASR Using Sequentially Sampled Chunks and Chunked Causal Convolution

Currently, the chunk-wise schemes are often used to make Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models to support streaming deployment. However, existing approaches are unable to capture the global context, lack support for parallel training, or exhibit quadratic complexity for the computation of multi-head self-attention (MHSA). On the other side, the causal convolution, no future context used, has become the de facto module in streaming Conformer. In this paper, we propose SSCFormer to push the limit of chunk-wise Conformer for streaming ASR using the following two techniques: 1) A novel cross-chunks context generation method, named Sequential Sampling Chunk (SSC) scheme, to re-partition chunks from regular partitioned chunks to facilitate efficient long-term contextual interaction within local chunks. 2)The Chunked Causal Convolution (C2Conv) is designed to concurrently capture the left context and chunk-wise future context. Evaluations on AISHELL-1 show that an End-to-End (E2E) CER 5.33% can achieve, which even outperforms a strong time-restricted baseline U2. Moreover, the chunk-wise MHSA computation in our model enables it to train with a large batch size and perform inference with linear complexity.

VILAS: Exploring the Effects of Vision and Language Context in Automatic Speech Recognition

Enhancing automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance by leveraging additional multimodal information has shown promising results in previous studies. However, most of these works have primarily focused on utilizing visual cues derived from human lip motions. In fact, context-dependent visual and linguistic cues can also benefit in many scenarios. In this paper, we first propose ViLaS (Vision and Language into Automatic Speech Recognition), a novel multimodal ASR model based on the continuous integrate-and-fire (CIF) mechanism, which can integrate visual and textual context simultaneously or separately, to facilitate speech recognition. Next, we introduce an effective training strategy that improves performance in modal-incomplete test scenarios. Then, to explore the effects of integrating vision and language, we create VSDial, a multimodal ASR dataset with multimodal context cues in both Chinese and English versions. Finally, empirical results are reported on the public Flickr8K and self-constructed VSDial datasets. We explore various cross-modal fusion schemes, analyze fine-grained crossmodal alignment on VSDial, and provide insights into the effects of integrating multimodal information on speech recognition.

Universal Deoxidation of Semiconductor Substrates Assisted by Machine-Learning and Real-Time-Feedback-Control

Thin film deposition is an essential step in the semiconductor process. During preparation or loading, the substrate is exposed to the air unavoidably, which has motivated studies of the process control to remove the surface oxide before thin film deposition. Optimizing the deoxidation process in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for a random substrate is a multidimensional challenge and sometimes controversial. Due to variations in semiconductor materials and growth processes, the determination of substrate deoxidation temperature is highly dependent on the grower's expertise; the same substrate may yield inconsistent results when evaluated by different growers. Here, we employ a machine learning (ML) hybrid convolution and vision transformer (CNN-ViT) model. This model utilizes reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) video as input to determine the deoxidation status of the substrate as output, enabling automated substrate deoxidation under a controlled architecture. This also extends to the successful application of deoxidation processes on other substrates. Furthermore, we showcase the potential of models trained on data from a single MBE equipment to achieve high-accuracy deployment on other equipment. In contrast to traditional methods, our approach holds exceptional practical value. It standardizes deoxidation temperatures across various equipment and substrate materials, advancing the standardization research process in semiconductor preparation, a significant milestone in thin film growth technology. The concepts and methods demonstrated in this work are anticipated to revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing in optoelectronics and microelectronics industries by applying them to diverse material growth processes.

Neuromorphic Incremental on-chip Learning with Hebbian Weight Consolidation

As next-generation implantable brain-machine interfaces become pervasive on edge device, incrementally learning new tasks in bio-plasticity ways is urgently demanded for Neuromorphic chips. Due to the inherent characteristics of its structure, spiking neural networks are naturally well-suited for BMI-chips. Here we propose Hebbian Weight Consolidation, as well as an on-chip learning framework. HWC selectively masks synapse modifications for previous tasks, retaining them to store new knowledge from subsequent tasks while preserving the old knowledge. Leveraging the bio-plasticity of dendritic spines, the intrinsic self-organizing nature of Hebbian Weight Consolidation aligns naturally with the incremental learning paradigm, facilitating robust learning outcomes. By reading out spikes layer by layer and performing back-propagation on the external micro-controller unit, MLoC can efficiently accomplish on-chip learning. Experiments show that our HWC algorithm up to 23.19% outperforms lower bound that without incremental learning algorithm, particularly in more challenging monkey behavior decoding scenarios. Taking into account on-chip computing on Synsense Speck 2e chip, our proposed algorithm exhibits an improvement of 11.06%. This study demonstrates the feasibility of employing incremental learning for high-performance neural signal decoding in next-generation brain-machine interfaces.

MetaDefa: Meta-learning based on Domain Enhancement and Feature Alignment for Single Domain Generalization

The single domain generalization(SDG) based on meta-learning has emerged as an effective technique for solving the domain-shift problem. However, the inadequate match of data distribution between source and augmented domains and difficult separation of domain-invariant features from domain-related features make SDG model hard to achieve great generalization. Therefore, a novel meta-learning method based on domain enhancement and feature alignment (MetaDefa) is proposed to improve the model generalization performance. First, the background substitution and visual corruptions techniques are used to generate diverse and effective augmented domains. Then, the multi-channel feature alignment module based on class activation maps and class agnostic activation maps is designed to effectively extract adequate transferability knowledge. In this module, domain-invariant features can be fully explored by focusing on similar target regions between source and augmented domains feature space and suppressing the feature representation of non-similar target regions. Extensive experiments on two publicly available datasets show that MetaDefa has significant generalization performance advantages in unknown multiple target domains.

Double Reverse Regularization Network Based on Self-Knowledge Distillation for SAR Object Classification

In current synthetic aperture radar (SAR) object classification, one of the major challenges is the severe overfitting issue due to the limited dataset (few-shot) and noisy data. Considering the advantages of knowledge distillation as a learned label smoothing regularization, this paper proposes a novel Double Reverse Regularization Network based on Self-Knowledge Distillation (DRRNet-SKD). Specifically, through exploring the effect of distillation weight on the process of distillation, we are inspired to adopt the double reverse thought to implement an effective regularization network by combining offline and online distillation in a complementary way. Then, the Adaptive Weight Assignment (AWA) module is designed to adaptively assign two reverse-changing weights based on the network performance, allowing the student network to better benefit from both teachers. The experimental results on OpenSARShip and FUSAR-Ship demonstrate that DRRNet-SKD exhibits remarkable performance improvement on classical CNNs, outperforming state-of-the-art self-knowledge distillation methods.

Bi-Preference Learning Heterogeneous Hypergraph Networks for Session-based Recommendation

Session-based recommendation intends to predict next purchased items based on anonymous behavior sequences. Numerous economic studies have revealed that item price is a key factor influencing user purchase decisions. Unfortunately, existing methods for session-based recommendation only aim at capturing user interest preference, while ignoring user price preference. Actually, there are primarily two challenges preventing us from accessing price preference. Firstly, the price preference is highly associated to various item features (i.e., category and brand), which asks us to mine price preference from heterogeneous information. Secondly, price preference and interest preference are interdependent and collectively determine user choice, necessitating that we jointly consider both price and interest preference for intent modeling. To handle above challenges, we propose a novel approach Bi-Preference Learning Heterogeneous Hypergraph Networks (BiPNet) for session-based recommendation. Specifically, the customized heterogeneous hypergraph networks with a triple-level convolution are devised to capture user price and interest preference from heterogeneous features of items. Besides, we develop a Bi-Preference Learning schema to explore mutual relations between price and interest preference and collectively learn these two preferences under the multi-task learning architecture. Extensive experiments on multiple public datasets confirm the superiority of BiPNet over competitive baselines. Additional research also supports the notion that the price is crucial for the task.

A Transformer-Based Model With Self-Distillation for Multimodal Emotion Recognition in Conversations

Emotion recognition in conversations (ERC), the task of recognizing the emotion of each utterance in a conversation, is crucial for building empathetic machines. Existing studies focus mainly on capturing context- and speaker-sensitive dependencies on the textual modality but ignore the significance of multimodal information. Different from emotion recognition in textual conversations, capturing intra- and inter-modal interactions between utterances, learning weights between different modalities, and enhancing modal representations play important roles in multimodal ERC. In this paper, we propose a transformer-based model with self-distillation (SDT) for the task. The transformer-based model captures intra- and inter-modal interactions by utilizing intra- and inter-modal transformers, and learns weights between modalities dynamically by designing a hierarchical gated fusion strategy. Furthermore, to learn more expressive modal representations, we treat soft labels of the proposed model as extra training supervision. Specifically, we introduce self-distillation to transfer knowledge of hard and soft labels from the proposed model to each modality. Experiments on IEMOCAP and MELD datasets demonstrate that SDT outperforms previous state-of-the-art baselines.

ODE-based Recurrent Model-free Reinforcement Learning for POMDPs

Neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are widely recognized as the standard for modeling physical mechanisms, which help to perform approximate inference in unknown physical or biological environments. In partially observable (PO) environments, how to infer unseen information from raw observations puzzled the agents. By using a recurrent policy with a compact context, context-based reinforcement learning provides a flexible way to extract unobservable information from historical transitions. To help the agent extract more dynamics-related information, we present a novel ODE-based recurrent model combines with model-free reinforcement learning (RL) framework to solve partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs). We experimentally demonstrate the efficacy of our methods across various PO continuous control and meta-RL tasks. Furthermore, our experiments illustrate that our method is robust against irregular observations, owing to the ability of ODEs to model irregularly-sampled time series.

Machine-Learning-Assisted and Real-Time-Feedback-Controlled Growth of InAs/GaAs Quantum Dots

Self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) have properties highly valuable for developing various optoelectronic devices such as QD lasers and single photon sources. The applications strongly rely on the density and quality of these dots, which has motivated studies of the growth process control to realize high-quality epi-wafers and devices. Establishing the process parameters in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for a specific density of QDs is a multidimensional optimization challenge, usually addressed through time-consuming and iterative trial-and-error. Here, we report a real-time feedback control method to realize the growth of QDs with arbitrary density, which is fully automated and intelligent. We developed a machine learning (ML) model named 3D ResNet 50 trained using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) videos as input instead of static images and providing real-time feedback on surface morphologies for process control. As a result, we demonstrated that ML from previous growth could predict the post-growth density of QDs, by successfully tuning the QD densities in near-real time from 1.5E10 cm-2 down to 3.8E8 cm-2 or up to 1.4E11 cm-2. Compared to traditional methods, our approach, with in situ tuning capabilities and excellent reliability, can dramatically expedite the material optimization process and improve the reproducibility of MBE, constituting significant progress for thin film growth techniques. The concepts and methodologies proved feasible in this work are promising to be applied to a variety of material growth processes, which will revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing for optoelectronic and microelectronic industries.
