Higgs bundle, isomonodromic leaves and minimal surfaces

In this paper we give a gauge theoretic construction of the joint moduli space of stable G-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces, where the Riemann surface structure is allowed to vary in the Teichm\"uller space of the underlying smooth surface. This joint moduli space has many interesting structures that are preserved by the mapping class group of the surface. We describe a surprising relationship between four key objects: the isomonodromic foliation, a canonical hermitian form arising from the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety, a canonical holomorphic form which vertically lifts vector fields on Teichm\"uller space, and the energy function for equivariant harmonic maps. One consequence of this work is the construction of pseudo-K\"ahler metrics on many examples of components of character varieties which include rank two higher Teichm\"uller spaces. This recovers some of the recent work on the subject by various authors.

Conformal limits for parabolic SL(n,C)-Higgs bundles

In this paper we generalize the conformal limit correspondence between Higgs bundles and holomorphic connections to the parabolic setting. Under mild genericity assumptions on the parabolic weights, we prove that the conformal limit always exists and that it defines holomorphic sections of the space of parabolic lambda-connections which preserve a natural stratification and foliate the moduli space. Along the way, we give a careful gauge theoretic construction of the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles with full flags which allows the eigenvalues of the residues of the Higgs field to vary. A number of new phenomena arise in the parabolic setting. In particular, in the generality we consider, unlike the nonparabolic case, the nonabelian Hodge correspondence does not define sections of the space of logarithmic lambda-connections, and the conformal limit does not define a one-parameter family in any given moduli space.

Holomorphic curves in the 6-pseudosphere and cyclic surfaces

The space $\mathbf{H}^{4,2}$ of vectors of norm -1 in $\mathbb{R}^{4,3}$ has a natural pseudo-Riemannian metric and a compatible almost complex structure. The group of automorphisms of both of these structures is the split real form $G_2'$. In this paper we consider a class of holomorphic curves in $\mathbf{H}^{4,2}$ which we call alternating. We show that such curves admit a so called Frenet framing. Using this framing, we show that the space of alternating holomorphic curves which are equivariant with respect to a surface group are naturally parameterized by certain $G_2'$-Higgs bundles. This leads to a holomorphic description of the moduli space as a fibration over Teichm\"uller space with a holomorphic action of the mapping class group. Using a generalization of Labourie's cyclic surfaces, we then show that equivariant alternating holomorphic curves are infinitesimally rigid.

A general Cayley correspondence and higher Teichm\"uller spaces

We introduce a new class of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triples in a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, which we call magical. Such an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple canonically defines a real form and various decompositions of $\mathfrak{g}$. Using this decomposition data, we explicitly parameterize special connected components of the moduli space of Higgs bundles on a compact Riemann surface $X$ for an associated real Lie group, hence also of the corresponding character variety of representations of $\pi_1X$ in the associated real Lie group. This recovers known components when the real group is split, Hermitian of tube type, or $\mathrm{SO}_{p,q}$ with $1<p\leq q$, and also constructs previously unknown components for the quaternionic real forms of $\mathrm{E}_6$, $\mathrm{E}_7$, $\mathrm{E}_8$ and $\mathrm{F}_4$. The classification of magical $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triples is shown to be in bijection with the set of $\Theta$-positive structures in the sense of Guichard--Wienhard, thus the mentioned parameterization conjecturally detects all examples of higher Teichm\"uller spaces. Indeed, we discuss properties of the surface group representations obtained from these Higgs bundle components and their relation to $\Theta$-positive Anosov representations, which indicate that this conjecture holds.

Arakelov-Milnor inequalities and maximal variations of Hodge structure

In this paper we study the $\mathbb{C}^*$-fixed points in moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface for a complex semisimple Lie group and its real forms. These fixed points are called Hodge bundles and correspond to complex variations of Hodge structure. We introduce a topological invariant for Hodge bundles that generalizes the Toledo invariant appearing for Hermitian Lie groups. A main result of this paper is a bound on this invariant which generalizes both the Milnor-Wood inequality of the Hermitian case and the Arakelov inequalities of classical variations of Hodge structure. When the generalized Toledo invariant is maximal, we establish rigidity results for the associated variations of Hodge structure which generalize known rigidity results for maximal Higgs bundles and their associated maximal representations in the Hermitian case.

(G,P)-opers and global Slodowy slices

In this paper, we introduce a generalization of G-opers for arbitrary parabolic subgroups P<G. For parabolic subgroups associated to even nilpotents, we parameterize (G,P)-opers by an object generalizing the base of the Hitchin fibration. In particular, we describe families of opers associated to higher Teichmuller spaces.

Studying Deformations of Fuchsian Representations with Higgs Bundles

This is a survey article whose main goal is to explain how many components of the character variety of a closed surface are either deformation spaces of representations into the maximal compact subgroup or deformation spaces of certain Fuchsian representations. This latter family is of particular interest and is related to the field of higher Teichm\"uller theory. Our main tool is the theory of Higgs bundles. We try to develop the general theory of Higgs bundles for real groups and indicate where subtleties arise. However, the main emphasis is placed on concrete examples which are our motivating objects. In particular, we do not prove any of the foundational theorems, rather we state them and show how they can be used to prove interesting statements about components of the character variety. We have also not spent any time developing the tools (harmonic maps) which define the bridge between Higgs bundles and the character variety. For this side of the story we refer the reader to the survey article of Q. Li [arXiv:1809.05747].

Conformal limits and the Bialynicki-Birula stratification of the space of lambda-connections

The Bialynicki-Birula decomposition of the space of lambda-connections restricts to the Morse stratification on the moduli space of Higgs bundles and to the partial oper stratification on the de Rham moduli space of holomorphic connections. For both the Morse and partial oper stratifications, every stratum is a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration over a component of the space of complex variations of Hodge structure. In this paper, we generalize known results for the Hitchin section and the space of opers to arbitrary strata. These include the following: a biholomorphic identification of the fibers of the two strata over a stable variation of Hodge structure via the "h-bar-conformal limit" of Gaiotto, a proof that the fibers of the Morse and partial oper stratifications are transverse at the base point, and an explicit parametrization of the fibers as half-dimensional affine spaces.

SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles and higher Teichm\"uller components

Some connected components of a moduli space are mundane in the sense that they are distinguished only by obvious topological invariants or have no special characteristics. Others are more alluring and unusual either because they are not detected by primary invariants, or because they have special geometric significance, or both. In this paper we describe new examples of such `exotic' components in moduli spaces of SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces or, equivalently, moduli spaces of surface group representations into the Lie group SO(p,q). Furthermore, we discuss how these exotic components are related to the notion of positive Anosov representations recently developed by Guichard and Wienhard. We also provide a complete count of the connected components of these moduli spaces (except for SO(2,q), with q> 3).

Exotic components of $\mathrm{SO}(p,q)$ surface group representations, and their Higgs bundle avatars

For semisimple Lie groups, moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface correspond to representation varieties for the surface fundamental group. In many cases, natural topological invariants label connected components of the moduli spaces. Hitchin representations into split real forms, and maximal representations into Hermitian Lie groups, are the only previously know cases where natural invariants do not fully distinguish connected components. In this note we announce the existence of new such exotic components in the moduli spaces for the groups $\mathrm{SO}(p,q)$ with $2<p<q$. These groups lie outside formerly know classes of groups associated with exotic components.

SO(n,n+1)-surface group representations and their Higgs bundles

We study the character variety of representations of the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus $g\geq2$ into the Lie group SO(n,n+1) using Higgs bundles. For each integer $0<d\leq n(2g-2),$ we show there is a smooth connected component of the character variety which is diffeomorphic to the product of a certain vector bundle over a symmetric product of a Riemann surface with the vector space of holomorphic differentials of degree 2,4,...,2n-2. In particular, when d=n(2g-2), this recovers Hitchin's parameterization of the Hitchin component. We also exhibit $2^{2g+1}-1$ additional connected components of the SO(n,n+1)-character variety and compute their topology. Moreover, representations in all of these new components cannot be continuously deformed to representations with compact Zariski closure. Using recent work of Guichard and Wienhard on positivity, it is shown that each of the representations which define singularities (i.e. those which are not irreducible) in these $2^{2g+1}-1$ connected components are positive Anosov representations.

The geometry of maximal components of the PSp(4,R) character variety

In this paper we describe the space of maximal components of the character variety of surface group representations into PSp(4,R) and Sp(4,R). For every rank 2 real Lie group of Hermitian type, we construct a mapping class group invariant complex structure on the maximal components. For the groups PSp(4,R) and Sp(4,R), we give a mapping class group invariant parameterization of each maximal component as an explicit holomorphic fiber bundle over Teichm\"uller space. Special attention is put on the connected components which are singular, we give a precise local description of the singularities and their geometric interpretation. We also describe the quotient of the maximal components for PSp(4,R) and Sp(4,R) by the action of the mapping class group as a holomorphic submersion over the moduli space of curves. These results are proven in two steps, first we use Higgs bundles to give a non-mapping class group equivariant parameterization, then we prove an analogue of Labourie's conjecture for maximal PSp(4,R) representations.

Various generalizations and deformations of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$ surface group representations and their Higgs bundles

Recall that the group $PSL(2,\mathbb R)$ is isomorphic to $PSp(2,\mathbb R),\ SO_0(1,2)$ and $PU(1,1).$ The goal of this paper is to examine the various ways in which Fuchsian representations of the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus $g$ into $PSL(2,\mathbb R)$ and their associated Higgs bundles generalize to the higher rank groups $PSL(n,\mathbb R),\ PSp(2n,\mathbb R),\ SO_0(2,n),\ SO_0(n,n+1)$ and $PU(n,n)$. For the $SO_0(n,n+1)$-character variety, we parameterize $n(2g-2)$ new connected components as the total space of vector bundles over appropriate symmetric powers of the surface and study how these components deform in the $SO_0(n,n+2)$-character variety. This generalizes results of Hitchin for $PSL(2,\mathbb R)$.

The geometry of maximal representations of surface groups into SO(2,n)

In this paper, we study the geometric and dynamical properties of maximal representations of surface groups into Hermitian Lie groups of rank 2. Combining tools from Higgs bundle theory, the theory of Anosov representations, and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, we obtain various results of interest. We prove that these representations are holonomies of certain geometric structures, recovering results of Guichard and Wienhard. We also prove that their length spectrum is uniformly bigger than that of a suitably chosen Fuchsian representation, extending a previous work of the second author. Finally, we show that these representations preserve a unique minimal surface in the symmetric space, extending a theorem of Labourie for Hitchin representations in rank 2.

Parallel Transport on Principal Bundles over Stacks

In this paper we introduce a notion of parallel transport for principal bundles with connections over differentiable stacks. We show that principal bundles with connections over stacks can be recovered from their parallel transport thereby extending the results of Barrett, Caetano and Picken, and Schreiber and Waldof from manifolds to stacks. In the process of proving our main result we simplify Schreiber and Waldorf's definition of a transport functor for principal bundles with connections over manifolds and provide a more direct proof of the correspondence between principal bundles with connections and transport functors.

Maximal Sp(4,R) surface group representations, minimal immersions and cyclic surfaces

Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus at least $2$. For each maximal representation $\rho: \pi_1(S)\rightarrow\mathsf{Sp}(4,\mathbb{R})$ in one of the $2g-3$ exceptional connected components, we prove there is a unique conformal structure on the surface in which the corresponding equivariant harmonic map to the symmetric space $\mathsf{Sp}(4,\mathbb{R})/\mathsf{U}(2)$ is a minimal immersion. Using a Higgs bundle parameterization of these components, we give a mapping class group invariant parameterization of such components as fiber bundles over Teichm\"uller space. Unlike Labourie's recent results on Hitchin components, these bundles are not vector bundles.

Asymptotics of certain families of Higgs bundles in the Hitchin component

Using Hitchin's parameterization of the Hitchin-Teichm\"uller component of the $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ representation variety, we study the asymptotics of certain families of representations. In fact, for certain Higgs bundles in the $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$-Hitchin component, we study the asymptotics of the Hermitian metric solving the Higgs bundle equations. This analysis is used to estimate the asymptotics of the corresponding family of flat connections as we scale the differentials by a real parameter. We consider Higgs fields that have only one holomorphic differential $q_n$ of degree $n$ or $q_{n-1}$ of degree $n-1.$ We also study the asymptotics of the associated family of equivariant harmonic maps to the symmetric space $SL(n,\mathbb{R})/SO(n,\mathbb{R})$ and relate it to recent work of Katzarkov, Noll, Pandit and Simpson.

A symplectic proof of a theorem of Franks

A celebrated theorem in two-dimensional dynamics due to John Franks asserts that every area preserving homeomorphism of the sphere has either two or infinitely many periodic points. In this work we reprove Franks' theorem under the additional assumption that the map is smooth. Our proof uses only tools from symplectic topology and thus differs significantly from all previous proofs. A crucial role is played by the results of Ginzburg and Kerman concerning resonance relations for Hamiltonian diffeomorpisms.
