Circumgalactic gas at its extreme: tidal gas streams around the Whale galaxy NGC 4631 explored with HST/COS

We present a detailed analysis of the absorption properties of one of the tidal gas streams around the Whale galaxy NGC4631 in the direction of the quasar 2MASSJ12421031+3214268. Our study is based on ultraviolet spectral data obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and 21cm-data from the HALOGAS project and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We detect strong HI Ly alpha absorption in the velocity range +550 to +800 km s^-1 related to gas from a NGC4631 tidal stream known as Spur 2. We measure a column density of log N(HI)=18.68pm0.15, indicating that the quasar sightline traces the outer boundary of Spur 2 as seen in the 21cm data. Metal absorption in Spur 2 is detected in the lines of OI, CII, SiII, and SiIII in a complex absorption pattern that reflects the multi-phase nature of the gas. We find that the average neutral gas fraction in Spur 2 towards 2MASSJ12421031+3214268 is only 14 percent. This implies that ionized gas dominates the total mass of Spur 2, which then may comprise more than 10^9 M_sun. No significant depletion of Si is observed, showing that Spur 2 does not contain significant amounts of dust. From the measured OI/HI column-density ratio we determine an alpha abundance in Spur 2 of 0.13pm0.07 solar ([alpha/H]=-0.90pm 0.16), which is substantially lower than what is observed in the NGC4631 disk. The low metallicity and low dust content suggest that Spur 2 represents metal-deficient gas stripped off a gas-rich satellite galaxy during a recent encounter with NGC4631.

An HST/COS legacy survey of high-velocity ultraviolet absorption in the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium and the Local Group

To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the velocity range |v_LSR|=100-500 km s^-1. With this unprecedented large HVC sample we were able to improve the statistics on HVC covering fractions, ionization conditions, small-scale structure, CGM mass, and inflow rate. For the first time, we determine robustly the angular two point correlation function of the high-velocity absorbers, systematically analyze antipodal sightlines on the celestial sphere, and compare the absorption characteristics with that of Damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) and constrained cosmological simulations of the LG. Our study demonstrates that the Milky Way CGM contains sufficient gaseous material to maintain the Galactic star-formation rate at its current level. We show that the CGM is composed of discrete gaseous structures that exhibit a large-scale kinematics together with small-scale variations in physical conditions. The Magellanic Stream clearly dominates both the cross section and mass flow of high-velocity gas in the Milky Way's CGM. The possible presence of high-velocity LG gas underlines the important role of the local cosmological environment in the large-scale gas-circulation processes in and around the Milky Way (abridged).

An HST/COS legacy survey of intervening SiIII absorption in the extended gaseous halos of low-redshift galaxies

Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas inside and outside of galaxies. It can be observed in the local Universe in ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and their relation to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at low redshift (z<=0.1), based on the analysis of UV absorption spectra along 303 extragalactic lines of sight obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Along a total redshift path of Dz=24 we identify 69 intervening SiIII systems that all show associated absorption from other low and high ions. We derive a bias-corrected number density of dN/dz(SiIII)=2.5 for absorbers with column densities log N(SiIII)>12.2. We develop a geometrical model for the absorption-cross section of the CGM around the local galaxy population and find excellent agreement between the model predictions and the observations. We further compare redshifts and positions of the absorbers with that of ~64,000 galaxies using archival galaxy-survey data. For the majority of the absorbers we identify possible host galaxies within 300 km/s of the absorbers and derive impact parameters rho<200 kpc, demonstrating that the spatial distributions of SiIII absorbers and galaxies are highly correlated. Our study indicates that the majority of SiIII-selected absorbers in our sample trace the CGM of nearby galaxies within their virial radii at a typical covering fraction of ~70 per cent. From a detailed ionization model we estimate that diffuse gas in the CGM around galaxies, as traced by SiIII, contains substantially more baryonic mass than their neutral interstellar medium.

High-resolution observations of two OVI absorbers at z=2 towards PKS 1448-232

To explore the ionization conditions in highly-ionized absorbers at high redshift we have studied in detail two intervening OVI absorbers at z=2 towards the quasar PKS1448-232, based on high (R=75,000) and intermediate (R=45,000) resolution optical VLT/UVES spectra. We find that both absorption systems are composed of several narrow subcomponents with CIV/OVI Doppler-parameters b<10 km/s, typically. This implies that the gas temperatures are T<10^5 K and that the absorbers are photoionized by the UV background. The system at z=2.1098 represents a simple, isolated OVI absorber that has only two absorption components and that is relatively metal-rich (Z\sim 0.6 solar). Ioinization modeling implies that the system is photoionized with OVI, CIV, and HI coexisting in the same gas phase. The second system at z=2.1660 represents a complicated, multi-component absorption system with eight OVI components spanning almost 300 km/s in radial velocity. The photoionization modeling implies that the metallicity is non-uniform and relatively low (<= 0.1 solar) and that the OVI absorption must arise in a gas phase different from that traced by CIV, CIII, and HI. Our detailed study of the two OVI systems towards PKS1448-232 shows that multi-phase, multi-component high-ion absorbers like the one at z=2.1660 require a detailed ionization modeling of the various subcomponents to obtain reliable results on the physical conditions and metal-abundances in the gas.

The neutral gas extent of galaxies as derived from weak intervening CaII absorbers

(Abridged) We present a systematic study of weak intervening CaII absorbers at low redshift (z<0.5), based on the analysis of archival high resolution (R>45,000) optical spectra of 304 quasars and active galactic nuclei observed with VLT/UVES. Along a total redshift path of Dz~100 we detected 23 intervening CaII absorbers in both the CaII H & K lines, with rest frame equivalent widths W_r,3934=15-799 mA and column densities log N(CaII)=11.25-13.04. We obtain a bias corrected number density of weak intervening CaII absorbers of dN/dz=0.117+-0.044 at z=0.35 for absorbers with log N(CaII)>11.65. This is ~2.6 times the value obtained for damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) at low redshift. From ionization modeling we conclude that intervening CaII absorption with log N(CaII)>11.5 arises in optically thick neutral gas in DLAs, sub-DLAs and Lyman limit systems (LLS) at HI column densities of log N(HI)>17.4. The relatively large cross section of these absorbers together with the frequent detection of CaII absorption in high velocity clouds (HVCs) in the halo of the Milky Way suggests that a considerable fraction of the intervening CaII systems trace dusty neutral gas structures in the halos and circumgalactic environment of galaxies (i.e., they are HVC analogs). Considering all galaxies with luminosities L>0.05L* we calculate that the characteristic radial extent of (partly) neutral gas clouds with log N(HI)>17.4 around low-redshift galaxies is R_HVC ~ 55 kpc.

The nature of NV absorbers at high redshift

We present a study of NV absorption systems at 1.5 < z < 2.5 in the optical spectra of 19 QSOs. Our analysis includes both absorbers arising from the intergalactic medium as well as systems in the vicinity of the background quasar. We construct detailed photoionization models to study the physical conditions and abundances in the absorbers and to constrain the spectral hardness of the ionizing radiation. The rate of incidence for intervening NV components is dN/dz = 3.38 +/- 0.43, corresponding to dN/dX = 1.10 +/- 0.14. The column density distribution function is fitted by the slope beta = 1.89 +/- 0.22, consistent with measurements for CIV and OVI. The narrow line widths (b_NV ~ 6 km/s) imply photoionization rather than collisions as dominating ionization process. The column densities of CIV and NV are correlated but show different slopes for intervening and associated absorbers, which indicates different ionizing spectra. Associated systems are found to be more metal-rich, denser, and more compact than intervening absorbers. This conclusion is independent of the adopted ionizing radiation. For the intervening NV systems we find typical values of [C/H] ~ -0.6 and n_H ~ 10^-3.6 cm^-3, and sizes of a few kpc, while for associated NV absorbers we obtain [C/H] ~ +0.7, n_H ~ 10^-2.8 cm^-3, and sizes of several 10 pc. The abundance of nitrogen relative to carbon [N/C] and alpha-elements like oxygen and silicon [N/alpha] is correlated with [N/H], indicating the enrichment by secondary nitrogen. The larger scatter in [N/alpha] in intervening systems suggests an inhomogeneous enrichment of the IGM. There is an anti-correlation between [N/alpha] and [alpha/C], which could be used to constrain the initial mass function of the carbon- and nitrogen-producing stellar population.

The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. V. The metallicity distribution function of the Galactic halo

We determine the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic halo by means of a sample of 1638 metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). The sample was corrected for minor biases introduced by the strategy for spectroscopic follow-up observations of the metal-poor candidates, namely "best and brightest stars first". [...] We determined the selection function of the HES, which must be taken into account for a proper comparison between the HES MDF with MDFs of other stellar populations or those predicted by models of Galactic chemical evolution. The latter show a reasonable agreement with the overall shape of the HES MDF for [Fe/H] > -3.6, but only a model of Salvadori et al. (2007) with a critical metallicity for low-mass star formation of Z_cr = 10^{-3.4} * Z_Sun reproduces the sharp drop at [Fe/H] ~-3.6 present in the HES MDF. [...] A comparison of the MDF of Galactic globular clusters and of dSph satellites to the Galaxy shows qualitative agreement with the halo MDF, derived from the HES, once the selection function of the latter is included. However, statistical tests show that the differences between these are still highly significant. [ABSTRACT ABRIDGED]

The baryon density at z=0.9-1.9 - Tracing the warm-hot intergalactic medium with broad Lyman alpha absorption

We present an analysis of the Lyman alpha forests of five quasar spectra in the near UV. Properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at an intermediate redshift interval (0.9 < z < 1.9) are studied. The amount of baryons in the diffuse photoionised IGM and the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) are traced to get constraints on the redshift evolution of the different phases of the intergalactic gas. The baryon density of the diffuse IGM is determined with photoionisation calculations under the assumption of local hydrostatic equilibrium. We assume that the gas is ionised by a metagalactic background radiation with a Haardt & Madau (2001) spectrum. The WHIM is traced with broad Lyman alpha (BLA) absorption. The properties of a number of BLA detections are studied. Under the assumption of collisional ionisation equilibrium a lower limit to the baryon density could be estimated. It is found that the diffuse photoionised IGM contains at least 25% of the total baryonic matter at redshifts 1 < z < 2. For the WHIM a lower limit of 2.4% could be determined. Furthermore the data indicates that the intergalactic gas is in a state of evolution at z=1.5. We confirm that a considerable part of the WHIM is created between z=1 and z=2.

The transverse proximity effect in spectral hardness on the line of sight towards HE 2347-4342

We report the discovery of 14 quasars in the vicinity of HE2347-4342, one of the two quasars whose intergalactic HeII forest has been resolved with FUSE. By analysing the HI and the HeII opacity variations separately, no transverse proximity effect is detected near three foreground quasars of HE2347-4342: QSOJ23503-4328 (z=2.282, $\vartheta=3.59$ arcmin), QSOJ23500-4319 (z=2.302, $\vartheta=8.77$ arcmin) and QSOJ23495-4338 (z=2.690, $\vartheta=16.28$ arcmin). This is primarily due to line contamination and overdensities probably created by large-scale structure. By comparing the HI absorption and the corresponding HeII absorption, we estimated the fluctuating spectral shape of the extragalactic UV radiation field along this line of sight. We find that the UV spectral shape near HE2347-4342 and in the projected vicinity of the three foreground quasars is statistically harder than expected from UV background models dominated by quasars. In addition, we find three highly ionised metal line systems near the quasars. However, they do not yield further constraints on the shape of the ionising field. We conclude that the foreground quasars show a transverse proximity effect that is detectable as a local hardening of the UV radiation field, although the evidence is strongest for QSOJ23495-4338. Thus, the relative spectral hardness traces the proximity effect also in overdense regions prohibiting the traditional detection in the HI forest. Furthermore, we emphasise that softening of quasar radiation by radiative transfer in the intergalactic medium is important to understand the observed spectral shape variations. From the transverse proximity effect of QSOJ23495-4338 we obtain a lower limit on the quasar lifetime of ~25 Myr.

The HeII Lyman alpha forest and the thermal state of the IGM

Recent analyses of the intergalactic UV background by means of the HeII Lyman alpha forest assume that HeII and HI absorption features have the same line widths. We omit this assumption to investigate possible effects of thermal line broadening on the inferred HeII/HI ratio eta and to explore the potential of intergalactic HeII observations to constrain the thermal state of the IGM. Deriving a simple relation between the column density and the temperature of an absorber we develop a procedure to fit the parameters of a power law temperature-density relation and eta simultaneously. In an alternative approach the temperature of an absorber, eta, and the redshift scale of eta variations are estimated simultaneously. Tests with artificial data show that well-constrained results can be obtained only if the signal-to-noise ratio in the HeII forest is S/N > 20. Thus, it is impossible to give an estimate of the temperature-density relation with the HeII data available at present (S/N ~5). However, we find that only 45% of the lines in our sample favor turbulent line widths. Furthermore, the inferred eta values are on average about 0.05 dex larger if a thermal component is taken into account, and their distribution is 46% narrower in comparison to a purely turbulent fit. Therefore, variations of eta on a 10% level may be related to the presence of thermal line broadening. The apparent correlation between the strength of the HI absorption and the eta value, which has been found in former studies, essentially disappears if thermal broadening is taken into account. In the redshift range 2.58 < z < 2.74 towards the quasars HE2347-4342 and HS1700+6416 we obtain eta ~ 100. (abridged)

Spectral shape of the UV ionizing background and HeII absorption at redshifts 1.8 < z < 2.9

The shape of the UV ionizing background is reconstructed from optically thin metal absorption-line systems identified in spectra of HE2347-4342, Q1157+3143, and HS1700+6416 in the redshift interval 1.8 < z < 2.9. The systems are analyzed by means of the Monte Carlo Inversion method completed with the spectral shape recovering procedure. The UVB spectral shape fluctuates at 2.4 < z < 2.9 mostly due to radiative transfer processes in the clumpy IGM. At z < 1.8, the IGM becomes almost transparent both in the HI and HeII Lyman continua and the variability of the spectral shape comes from diversity of spectral indices describing the QSO/AGN intrinsic radiation. At z > 2.4, the recovered spectral shapes show intensity depression between 3 and 4 Ryd due to HeII Ly-alpha absorption in the IGM clouds (line blanketing) and continuous medium (true Gunn-Petersen effect). The mean HeII Ly-alpha opacity estimated from the depth of this depression corresponds within 1-2sigma to the values directly measured from the HI/HeII Ly-alpha forest towards the quasars studied. The observed scatter in eta = N(HeII)/N(HI) and anti-correlation between N(HI) and eta can be explained by the combined action of variable spectral softness and differences in the mean gas density between the absorbing clouds. Neither of the recovered spectral shapes show features which can be attributed to the putative input of radiation from soft sources like starburst galaxies.

Fluctuations of the intergalactic UV background towards two lines of sight

We present a reanalysis of the HeII Lyman alpha absorption towards the quasars HS1700+6416 and HE2347-4342 using new high S/N, optical observations. An alternative analysis method is applied, which fits the high quality, optical HI data directly to the HeII spectrum. The results are compared to those inferred from standard line profile analyses. This new method enables us to derive redshift scales characterizing the fluctuations of the column density ratio eta. We find eta changing smoothly with redshift on typical scales of Delta z ~ 0.01-0.03 corresponding to 8-24 h^-1 Mpc comoving. The real length scales of variations of the column density ratio might be even larger, since part of the fluctuations may be caused by noise in the HeII data and by effects due to the applied method. However, eta variations on small scales of a few Mpc with an amplitude of about +/- 1.5 dex cannot be ruled out completely. The data shows an apparent correlation between low eta regions and the presence of metal line absorbers, which corresponds to the more general correlation of low eta and strong HI absorption. Thermal line broadening is suggested as a probable explanation for this apparent correlation, since both fit methods would severely underestimate eta for absorbers with log N(HI) > 13 if the line width was dominated by thermal broadening. Indeed, lines located close to the cut-off of the b(N) distribution yield lower column density ratios compared to the whole sample, in particular if high density absorbers are considered. We argue that the apparent correlation of eta with the strength of the HI absorption is caused by insufficient consideration of thermal broadened lines by the standard analysis. As unbiased value of the column density ratio, we find eta ~80 in agreement with previous estimates.

Bright Metal-Poor Stars from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. I. Selection and Follow-up Observations from 329 Fields

We present a sample of 1777 bright (9 1.0) metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.0) giants of 9% +- 2%, which is lower than previously reported. However, the frequency raises to similar (>20%) and higher values with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. Although the numbers of stars at low metallicity are falling rapidly at the lowest metallicities, there is evidence that the fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars is increasing rapidly as a function of declining metallicity. For ~60 objects, high-resolution data have already been obtained; one of these, HE 1327-2326, is the new record holder for the most iron-deficient star known.

The UV spectrum of HS1700+6416 I. Predicting the metal line content of the far UV spectrum

In preparation of a study of the HeII/HI ratio towards the bright QSO HS1700+6416, we predict the metal line content of the far-UV spectral range by modelling 18 metal absorption line systems with redshifts 0.2<z<2.6 identified in the spectrum of this quasar. For that purpose, we investigate the spectral energy distribution of the metagalactic ionizing radiation field. Simple photoionization models based on 8 different shapes of the ionizing background are tested for each system. The adopted energy distributions comprise the Haardt & Madau (2001, HM) model of metagalactic UV background as well as typical spectra of AGN and starburst galaxies. The models are evaluated and the favoured one is estimated. We find that the majority of the considered systems is best reproduced with a HM-like ionizing radiation, where the HeII break, formally located at 4 Ryd, is shifted to lower energies (~3 Ryd), probably due to the opacity of the higher HeII Lyman series lines. The remaining systems can be reasonably described with models based on the unmodified HM background or the spectra of AGN or starburst galaxies. This finding supports the idea that the UV background is spatially variable due to both IGM opacity variations and to local sources. In comparison to an unmodified HM background, the resulting ionizing spectrum leads to carbon abundances lower by ~0.5 dex. Furthermore, if the ionizing radiation field as determined from metal line systems was typical for the IGM, the expected HeII/HI ratio would be 150 to 190.

The UV spectrum of HS1700+6416 II. FUSE observations of the HeII Lyman alpha forest

We present the far-UV spectrum of the quasar HS1700+6416 taken with FUSE. This QSO provides the second line of sight with the HeII absorption resolved into a Ly alpha forest structure. Since HS1700+6416 is slightly less redshifted (z=2.72) than HE2347-4342, we only probe the post-reionization phase of HeII, seen in the evolution of the HeII opacity, which is consistent with a simple power law. The HeII/HI ratio eta is estimated using a line profile-fitting procedure and an apparent optical depth approach, respectively. The expected metal line absorption in the far-UV is taken into account as well as molecular absorption of galactic H_2. About 27% of the eta values are affected by metal line absorption. In order to investigate the applicability of the analysis methods, we create simple artificial spectra based on the statistical properties of the HI Ly alpha forest. The analysis of the artificial data demonstrates that the apparent optical depth method as well as the line profile-fitting procedure lead to confident results for restricted data samples only (12.0 < log N(HI) < 13.0). The reasons are saturation in the case of the apparent optical depth and thermal line widths in the case of the profile fits. Furthermore, applying the methods to the unrestricted data set may mimic a correlation between eta and the strength of the HI absorption. For the restricted data samples a scatter of 10 - 15% in eta would be expected even if the underlying value is constant. The observed scatter is significantly larger than expected, indicating that the intergalactic radiation background is indeed fluctuating. In the redshift range 2.58 < z < 2.72, where the data quality is best, we find eta ~ 100, suggesting a contribution of soft sources like galaxies to the UV background.

Spectral shape of the UV ionizing background and OVI absorbers at z ~ 1.5 towards HS0747+4259

We report on high resolution spectra of the bright QSO HS0747+4259 (zem = 1.90, V = 15.8) observed to search for intermediate redshift OVI absorption systems. The spectra were obtained by means of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) at the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) at the W. M. Keck telescope. We identify 16 OVI systems in the range 1.07 <= z <= 1.87. Among them, six systems with zabs = 1.46-1.8 exhibit a sufficient number of lines of different ionic transitions to estimate the shape of the ionizing radiation field in the range 1 Ryd < E < 10 Ryd. All recovered UV ionizing spectra are characterized by the enhanced intensity at E > 3 Ryd compared to the model spectrum of Haardt and Madau (1996). This is in line with the observational evidence of a deficiency of strong Ly-alpha absorbers with N(HI) > 10^{15} cm^{-2}, at z < 2. The UV background shows significant local variations: the spectral shape estimated at z = 1.59 differs from that obtained at z = 1.81 and 1.73. A possible cause of these variations is the presence of a QSO/AGN at z ~= 1.54-1.59 close to the line of sight. No features favoring the input of stellar radiation to the ionizing background are detected, limiting the escape fraction of the galactic UV photons to f_esc < 0.05.

The new record holder for the most iron-poor star: HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]=-5.4

We describe the discovery of HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]}=-5.4. The star was found in a sample of bright metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. Its abundance pattern is characterized by very high C and N abundances. The detection of Sr which is overabundant by a factor of 10 as compared to iron and the Sun, suggests that neutron-capture elements had already been produced in the very early Galaxy. A puzzling Li depletion is observed in this unevolved star which contradicts the value of the primordial Li derived from WMAP and other Li studies. Possible scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern (Pop. II or Pop. III) are presented as well as an outlook on future observations.

Intergalactic HeII absorption towards QSO 1157+3143

We report the discovery of a further line of sight allowing detection of HeII Ly alpha absorption by the intergalactic medium. A HST/STIS survey of 32 bright z ~ 3 quasars selected from the Hamburg Quasar Surveys yielded one detection toward QSO 1157+3143 (z ~ 3, B ~ 17). A 10 orbit follow-up spectrum reveals a UV spectrum significantly supressed by two intervening Lyman limit systems at z=2.77 and 2.94, but with the continuum flux recovering sufficiently shortward of ~ 1700 A to allow study of the HeII absorption spectrum in the redshift range 2.75 < z < 2.97. The absorption is characterized by alternating voids and dense filament structures seen in both HeII and HI. Attempts to model the HeII opacity in terms of HI Ly alpha forest absorption are not successful in the voids, suggesting that HeII reionization is not complete between z=2.77 and 2.97 or that an optically thin Lyman limit system with z ~ 0.3 is responsible for the additional opacity.
