Oscillatory magnetic fields for neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy

The generation of high frequency oscillatory magnetic fields represents a fundamental component underlying the successful implementation of neutron resonant spin-echo spectrometers, a class of instrumentation critical for the high-resolution extraction of dynamical excitations (structural and magnetic) in materials. In this paper, the setup of the resonant circuits at the longitudinal resonant spin-echo spectrometer RESEDA is described in comprehensive technical detail. We demonstrate that these circuits are capable of functioning at frequencies up to 3.6 MHz and over a broad bandwidth down to 35 kHz using a combination of signal generators, amplifiers, impedance matching transformers, and a carefully designed cascade of tunable capacitors and customized coils.

Nonparametric estimation for fractional diffusion processes with random effects

We propose a nonparametric estimation for a class of fractional stochastic differential equations (FSDE) with random effects. We precisely consider general linear fractional stochastic differential equations with drift depending on random effects and non-random diffusion. We build ordinary kernel estimators and histogram estimators and study their Lp-risk (p =1 or 2), when H>1/2. Asymptotic results are evaluated as both T = T(N) and N tend to infinity.

Band Offset in (Ga,In)As/Ga(As,Sb) Heterostructures

A series of (Ga,In)As/GaAs/Ga(As,Sb) multi-quantum well heterostructures is analyzed using temperature- and power-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Pronounced PL variations with sample temperature are observed and analyzed using microscopic many-body theory and band structure calculations based on the k$\cdot$p method. This theory-experiment comparison reveals an unusual, temperature dependent variation of the band alignment between the (Ga,In)As and Ga(As,Sb) quantum wells.

Recombination dynamics of type-II excitons in (Ga,In)As/GaAs/Ga(As,Sb) heterostructures

(Ga,In)As/GaAs/Ga(As,Sb) multi-quantum well heterostructures have been investigated using continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy at various temperatures. A complex interplay was observed between the excitonic type-II transitions with electrons in the (Ga,In)As well and holes in the Ga(As,Sb) well and the type-I excitons in the (Ga,In)As and Ga(As,Sb) wells. The type-II luminescence exhibits a strongly non-exponential temporal behavior below a critical temperature of Tc = 70K. The transients were analyzed in the framework of a rate-equation model. It was found that the exciton relaxation and hopping in the localized states of the disordered ternary Ga(As,Sb) are the decisive processes to describe the dynamics of the type-II excitons correctly.

Effect of resonant magnetic perturbations on low collisionality discharges in MAST and a comparison with ASDEX Upgrade

Sustained ELM mitigation has been achieved on MAST and AUG using RMPs with a range of toroidal mode numbers over a wide region of low to medium collisionality discharges. The ELM energy loss and peak heat loads at the divertor targets have been reduced. The ELM mitigation phase is typically associated with a drop in plasma density and overall stored energy. In one particular scenario on MAST, by carefully adjusting the fuelling it has been possible to counteract the drop in density and to produce plasmas with mitigated ELMs, reduced peak divertor heat flux and with minimal degradation in pedestal height and confined energy. While the applied resonant magnetic perturbation field can be a good indicator for the onset of ELM mitigation on MAST and AUG there are some cases where this is not the case and which clearly emphasise the need to take into account the plasma response to the applied perturbations. The plasma response calculations show that the increase in ELM frequency is correlated with the size of the edge peeling-tearing like response of the plasma and the distortions of the plasma boundary in the X-point region.

Neutron spin echo spectroscopy under 17T magnetic field at RESEDA

We report proof-of-principle measurements at the neutron resonance spin echo spectrometer RESEDA (MLZ) under large magnetic fields by means of Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE). Our study demonstrates the feasibility of applying strong magnetic fields up to 17\,T at the sample while maintaining unchanged sub-$\mu$eV resolution. We find that the MIEZE-spin-echo resolution curve remains essentially unchanged as a function of magnetic field up to the highest fields available, promising access to high fields without need for additional fine-tuning of the instrument. This sets the stage for the experimental investigation of subtle field dependent phenomena, such as magnetic field-driven phase transitions in hard and soft condensed matter physics.

Neutron Resonance Spin Flippers: Static Coils Manufactured by Electrical Discharge Machining

Radiofrequency spin flippers (RFSF) are key elements of Neutron Resonance Spin Echo (NRSE) spectrometers, which allow performing controlled manipulations of the beam polarization. We report on the design and test of a new type of RFSF which originality lies in the new manufacturing technique for the static coil. The largely automated procedure ensures reproducible construction as well as an excellent homogeneity of the neutron magnetic resonance condition over the coil volume. Two salient features of this concept are the large neutron window and the closure of the coil by a $\mu$-metal yoke which prevents field leakage outside of the coil volume. These properties are essential for working with large beams and enable new applications with coils tilted with respect to the beam axis such as neutron Larmor diffraction or the study of dispersive excitations by inelastic NRSE.

Equation of state at FAIR energies and the role of resonances

Two microscopic models, UrQMD and QGSM, are used to extract the effective equation of state (EOS) of locally equilibrated nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions at energies from 11.6 AGeV to 160 AGeV. Analysis is performed for the fixed central cubic cell of volume V = 125 fm**3 and for the expanding cell that followed the growth of the central area with uniformly distributed energy. For all reactions the state of local equilibrium is nearly approached in both models after a certain relaxation period. The EOS has a simple linear dependence P/e = c_s**2 with 0.12 < c_s**2 < 0.145. Heavy resonances are shown to be responsible for deviations of the c_s**2(T) and c_s**2(mu_B) from linear behavior. In the T-mu_B and T-mu_S planes the EOS has also almost linear dependence and demonstrates kinks related not to the deconfinement phase transition but to inelastic freeze-out in the system.

Dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions with in-medium spectral functions of vector mesons

The in-medium spectral functions of $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons and the broadening of the nucleon resonances at finite baryon density are calculated self-consistently by combining a resonance dominance model for the vector meson production with an extended vector meson dominance model. The influence of the in-medium modifications of the vector meson properties on the dilepton spectrum in heavy-ion collisions is investigated. The dilepton spectrum is generated for the C+C reaction at 2.0$A$ GeV and compared with recent HADES Collaboration data. The collision dynamics is then described by the Tübingen relativistic quantum molecular dynamics transport model. We find that an iterative calculation of the vector meson spectral functions that takes into account the broadening of the nucleon resonances due to their increased in-medium decay branchings is convergent and provides a reasonable description of the experimental data in the mass region $0.45\leq M \leq 0.75$ GeV. On the other side, the theoretical calculations slightly underestimate the region $m_π\leq M \leq 0.4$ GeV. Popular in-medium scenarios such as a schematic collisional broadening and dropping vector mesons masses are discussed as well.

Parton rearrangement and fast thermalization in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies

The implications of parton rearrangement processes on the dynamics of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions have been investigated. A microscopic transport approach, namely the quark gluon string model (QGSM) which has been extended for a locally density-dependent partonic rearrangement and fusion procedure served as the tool for this investigations. The model emulates effectively the dynamics of a strongly coupled quark plasma and final hadronic interactions. Main QGSM results on anisotropic flow components v1 and v2 at top RHIC energy are compiled. Predictions for the pseudorapidity dependence of directed and elliptic flow in Pb+Pb collisions under LHC conditions are presented.

Microscopic models and effective equation of state in nuclear collisions at FAIR energies

Two microscopic models, UrQMD and QGSM, were employed to study the formation of locally equilibrated hot and dense nuclear matter in heavy-ion collisions at energies from 11.6 AGeV to 160 AGeV. Analysis was performed for the fixed central cubic cell of volume V = 125 fm**3 and for the expanding cell which followed the growth of the central area with uniformly distributed energy. To decide whether or not the equilibrium was reached, results of the microscopic calculations were compared to that of the statistical thermal model. Both dynamical models indicate that the state of kinetic, thermal and chemical equilibrium is nearly approached at any bombarding energy after a certain relaxation period. The higher the energy, the shorter the relaxation time. Equation of state has a simple linear dependence P = a(sqrt{s})*e, where a = c_s**2 is the sound velocity squared. It varies from 0.12 \pm 0.01 at E_{lab} = 11.6 AGeV to 0.145 \pm 0.005 at E_{lab} = 160 AGeV. Change of the slope in a(sqrt{s}) behavior occurs at E_{lab} = 40 AGeV and can be assigned to the transition from baryon-rich to meson-dominated matter. The phase diagrams in the T - mu_B plane show the presence of kinks along the lines of constant entropy per baryon. These kinks are linked to the inelastic (i.e. chemical) freeze-out in the system.

Anisotropic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC from the quark gluon string model with parton rearrangement

We present predictions for the pseudorapidity dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameters v_1 and v_2 of baryons and inclusive charged hadrons in Pb+Pb collisions at a LHC energy of sqrt(s) = 5.5 TeV applying a microscopic transport model, namely the quark gluon string model (QGSM) which has been recently extended for parton rearrangement and fusion processes. Pb+Pb collisions with impact parameters b = 2.3 fm and b = 8 fm have been simulated in order to investigate additionally the difference between central and semiperipheral configurations. In contrast to v_1(eta) at RHIC, the directed flow of charged hadrons shows a small normal flow alignment. The elliptic flow v_2(eta) turns out to be rather similar in shape for RHIC and LHC conditions, the magnitude however increases about 10-20 % at the LHC, leading to the conclusion that the hydrodynamical limit will be reached.

Modern compact star observations and the quark matter equation of state

We present a hybrid equation of state (EoS) for dense matter that satisfies phenomenological constraints from modern compact star (CS) observations which indicate high maximum masses (M = 2 M_sun) and large radii (R> 12 km). The corresponding isospin symmetric EoS is consistent with flow data analyses of heavy-ion collisions and a deconfinement transition at approx. 0.55 fm^{-3}. The quark matter phase is described by a 3-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model that accounts for scalar diquark condensation and vector meson interactions while the nuclear matter phase is obtained within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach using the Bonn-A potential. We demonstrate that both pure neutron stars and neutron stars with quark matter cores (QCSs) are consistent with modern CS observations. Hybrid star configurations with a CFL quark core are unstable.

Nuclear matter in the chiral limit and the in-medium chiral condensate

We investigate nuclear matter, i.e. the nuclear equation-of-state (EOS) as well as the relativistic mean fields in the chiral limit. The investigations are based on a chiral nucleon-nucleon EFT interaction where the explicit and implicit pion mass dependence is known up to next-to-leading order. The nuclear bulk properties are found to remain fairly stable in the chiral limit. Based on the same interaction the in-medium scalar condensate is derived, both in Hartree-Fock approximation as well as from the Brueckner G-matrix, making thereby use of the Hellman-Feynman theorem. Short distance physics which determines the reduction of the in-medium nucleon mass is found to play only a minor role for the reduction of the chiral condensate.

Low densities in asymmetric nuclear matter

Asymmetric nuclear matter is investigated in the low density region below the nuclear saturation density. Microscopic calculations based on the Dirac Brueckner Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach with realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials are used to adjust a low density functional. This functional is constructed on a density expansion of the relativistic mean field theory which allows a clear interpretation of the role of the mesons to the equation of state. It is shown that a correction term should be added to the functional in order to take into account the effects beyond the mean field. Two functionals with different corrections are obtained. Those functionals converge to predict a reduction of the spinodal zone in asymmetric nuclear matter by about 15-20% and an isoscalar unstable mode closer to the constant Z/A direction than the functional without correction.

Comment on "Dynamics of nuclear fluid. VIII. Time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation from a classical point of view"

The phase-space paths introduced by Cheuk-Yin Wong in Phys. Rev.C25, 1460 (1982) and discussed recently in the literature can be used for calculation of evolution of the Wigner function to first order in the time increments only. The first-order solutions are helpful to determine the phase-space Green function in the framework of the phase-space path integral method.

Pseudorapidity shape of elliptic flow as signature for fast equilibration in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at energies up to sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

The implications of parton recombination processes on the dynamics of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion reactions are investigated. To do so, the quark-gluon string transport model has been extended for partonic recombination and fusion processes. Parton recombination leads to short equilibration times and improves significantly on the theoretical description of measured directed and elliptic flow, i.e., v_1 and v_2, distributions in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV, in particular what concerns their pseudorapidity dependence. The shape of v_2(eta) is found to be closely related to fast thermalization.
