First results of the two square meters multilayer glass composite mirror design proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array developed at INFN

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a future ground-based gamma-ray astronomy detector that will consist of more than 100 Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes of different sizes. The total reflective surface of roughly 10 000 m$^2$ requires unprecedented technological efforts towards a cost-efficient production of light-weight and reliable mirror substrates at high production rate. We report on a new mirror concept proposed for CTA developed by INFN, which is based on the replication from a spherical convex mold under low pressure. The mirror substrate is an open structure design made by thin glass layers at the mirror's front and rear interspaced by steel cylinders. A first series of nominal size mirrors has been produced, for which we discuss the optical properties in terms of radius of curvature and focusing power.

Status of the technologies for the production of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) mirrors

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation very high-energy gamma-ray observatory, with at least 10 times higher sensitivity than current instruments. CTA will comprise several tens of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) operated in array-mode and divided into three size classes: large, medium and small telescopes. The total reflective surface could be up to 10,000 m2 requiring unprecedented technological efforts. The properties of the reflector directly influence the telescope performance and thus constitute a fundamental ingredient to improve and maintain the sensitivity. The R&D status of lightweight, reliable and cost-effective mirror facets for the CTA telescope reflectors for the different classes of telescopes is reviewed in this paper.

Studying flux variability of the BL Lac object 1ES0806+524 with MAGIC in a multi-wavelength context

We present results of multi-wavelength (MWL) observations of the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (HBL) object 1ES 0806+524 (z=0.138). Triggered by a high optical state, very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) observations were carried out with the MAGIC stereoscopic system from January to March 2011. During the observations a relatively short VHE gamma-ray flare was detected that lasted no longer than one night. To complement the VHE observations, simultaneous MWL data were collected in high energy gamma-rays using the \textit{Fermi Large Area Telescope (HE, 300 MeV - 100 GeV), in the X-ray and UV band with the \textit{Swift} satellite, in the optical R--band through observations with the KVA telescope and in the radio band using the OVRO telescope. This constitutes the first time that such a broad band coverage has been obtained for this source. We study the source properties through the characterization of the spectral energy distribution (SED) and its evolution through two different VHE flux states. The SED can be modeled with a simple one-zone SSC model, resulting in parameters that are comparable to those obtained for other HBLs.

The Formation of Condensation on Cherenkov Telescope Mirrors

The mirrors of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are different from those of conventional astronomical telescopes in several ways, not least in that they are exposed to the elements. One of the issues which may arise is condensation forming on the mirrors during observing under certain atmospheric conditions, which has important consequences for the operation of the telescopes. This contribution discusses why telescope mirrors suffer condensation and describes the atmospheric conditions and mirror designs which are likely to be problematic.

Mirror Development for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a planned observatory for very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will consist of several tens of telescopes of different sizes, with a total mirror area of up to 10,000 square meters. Most mirrors of current installations are either polished glass mirrors or diamond-turned aluminium mirrors, both labour intensive technologies. For CTA, several new technologies for a fast and cost-efficient production of light-weight and reliable mirror substrates have been developed and industrial pre-production has started for most of them. In addition, new or improved aluminium-based and dielectric surface coatings have been developed to increase the reflectance over the lifetime of the mirrors compared to those of current Cherenkov telescope instruments.

VHE gamma-ray emission from the FSRQs observed by the MAGIC telescopes

Among more than fifty blazars detected in very high energy (VHE, E>100GeV) gamma-rays, only three belong to the subclass of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs): PKS 1510-089, PKS 1222+216 and 3C 279. The detection of FSRQs in the VHE range is challenging, mainly because of their steep soft spectra in the GeV-TeV regime. MAGIC has observed and detected all FSRQs known to be VHE emitters up to now and found that they exhibit very different behavior. The 2010 discovery of PKS 1222+216 (z = 0.432) with the fast variability observed, challenges simple one-zone emission models and more complicated scenarios have been proposed. 3C 279 is the most distant VHE gamma-ray emitting AGN (z = 0.536), which was discovered by MAGIC in 2006 and detected again in 2007. In 2011 MAGIC observed 3C 279 two times: first during a monitoring campaign and later observations were triggered by a flare detected with Fermi-LAT. We present the MAGIC results and the multiwavelength behavior during this flaring epoch. Finally, we report the 2012 detection of PKS 1510-089 (z = 0.36), together with its simultaneous multiwavelength data from optical to gamma-rays.
