Dependency-Aware HARQ and Link Adaptation for Wireless Transmission of Open-Vocabulary Scene Graphs

Wireless visual uplinks increasingly carry structured representations for edge inference, making packet reliability part of task-aware link adaptation. In open-vocabulary scene-graph transmission, an indexed triplet is usable only if both its triplet packet and the vocabulary packets defining any newly introduced tokens are recovered. This prerequisite coupling makes the marginal value of packet reliability depend on neighboring packet reliabilities. We formulate a dependency-aware semantic distortion and jointly optimize finite choices of modulation and coding scheme (MCS), transmit power, and Chase-combining hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) depth under expected delay and energy constraints. The distortion is multi-affine in packet failure probabilities and cannot, in general, be reduced to static separable unequal error protection (UEP) weights when prerequisites are active. This structure yields a state-dependent reliability coefficient and explicit switching thresholds among wireless actions. A Lagrangian block method performs exact per-packet finite-action updates for fixed multipliers. On reduced instances, it matches exhaustive optimization in 28 of 30 cases, with a worst gap of 1.095%. On GQA traces using a table-driven block error rate (BLER) abstraction, it reduces mean semantic distortion by 58.71% and grounded-query failure by 57.03% relative to dependency-agnostic HARQ under the same budgets.

A Novel Modulation Scheme Based on the Kramers--Kronig Relations for Optical IM/DD Systems

The ever-growing demand for higher data rates in optical communication systems necessitates the development of advanced modulation formats capable of significantly enhancing system performance. In this work, we propose a novel modulation format derived from the Kramers--Kronig relations. This scheme effectively reduces the complexity of digital filtering and alleviates the demands on the digital-to-analog converter, offering a practical solution for high speed optical communication. The proposed modulation format was rigorously validated through experimental investigations using an optical wireless link. The results demonstrate a notable improvement in bit error rate (BER) performance and receiver sensitivity compared to PAM-4 and CAP-16 modulation schemes, with enhancements of 0.6 dB and 1.5 dB in receiver sensitivity, respectively. These improvements enable higher data transmission rates, positioning the Kramers--Kronig relations-based modulation format as a promising alternative to existing modulation techniques. Its potential to enhance the efficiency and capacity of optical communication systems is clearly evident. Future work will focus on extending its application to more complex scenarios, such as high-speed underwater optical communication systems, where advanced modulation formats are critical for overcoming bandwidth limitations.

Towards 250-m gigabits-per-second underwater wireless optical communication using a low-complexity ANN equalizer

The breakthroughs of communication distance and data rate have been eagerly anticipated by scientists in the area of underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC), which is seriously limited by the obvious aquatic attenuation in underwater channel. High-power laser source and ultra-sensitive photodetector are straightforward to extend the UWOC distance. However, nonlinear impairments caused by bandwidth-limited high-power transmitter and sensitive receiver severely degrade the data rate of long-distance UWOC. In this paper, we develop a UWOC system using a high-power transmitter by beam combining of 8-channel cascaded laser diodes (LD) and a sensitive receiver by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). The combined linear equalizer and low-complexity Artificial Neural Network (ANN) equalizer are used to achieve 1-Gbps data transmission over a 250-m UWOC system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Gbps-level UWOC experimental demonstration in >250-meter underwater transmission that has ever been reported. To lower the complexity of the ANN equalizer, a linear equalizer is applied first in order to prune the input size of the ANN equalizer. The optimal input size of the ANN equalizer is identified as 9. And the ANN architecture consists of two hidden layers, with 10 neurons in the first layer and a single neuron in the second layer. The performance of the proposed ANN-based system is compared with that of systems employing Volterra and linear equalizers. The bit error rate (BER) at data rate of 1 Gbps over a 250-m UWOC is reduced to with the combined linear and ANN equalizer, which is below the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit. In contrast, the linear and Volterra equalizer-based systems achieve data rates of 500 Mbps and 750 Mbps, respectively.

Maximize the Foot Clearance for a Hopping Robotic Leg Considering Motor Saturation

A hopping leg, no matter in legged animals or humans, usually behaves like a spring during the periodic hopping. Hopping like a spring is efficient and without the requirement of complicated control algorithms. Position and force control are two main methods to realize such a spring-like behaviour. The position control usually consumes the torque resources to ensure the position accuracy and compensate the tracking errors. In comparison, the force control strategy is able to maintain a high elasticity. Currently, the position and force control both leads to the discount of motor saturation ratio as well as the bandwidth of the control system, and thus attenuates the performance of the actuator. To augment the performance, this letter proposes a motor saturation strategy based on the force control to maximize the output torque of the actuator and realize the continuous hopping motion with natural dynamics. The proposed strategy is able to maximize the saturation ratio of motor and thus maximize the foot clearance of the single leg. The dynamics of the two-mass model is utilized to increase the force bandwidth and the performance of the actuator. A single leg with two degrees of freedom is designed as the experiment platform. The actuator consists of a powerful electric motor, a harmonic gear and encoder. The effectiveness of this method is verified through simulations and experiments using a robotic leg actuated by powerful high reduction ratio actuators.
