Active Wildfires Detection and Dynamic Escape Routes Planning for Humans through Information Fusion between Drones and Satellites

UAVs are playing an increasingly important role in the field of wilderness rescue by virtue of their flexibility. This paper proposes a fusion of UAV vision technology and satellite image analysis technology for active wildfires detection and road networks extraction of wildfire areas and real-time dynamic escape route planning for people in distress. Firstly, the fire source location and the segmentation of smoke and flames are targeted based on Sentinel 2 satellite imagery. Secondly, the road segmentation and the road condition assessment are performed by D-linkNet and NDVI values in the central area of the fire source by UAV. Finally, the dynamic optimal route planning for humans in real time is performed by the weighted A* algorithm in the road network with the dynamic fire spread model. Taking the Chongqing wildfire on August 24, 2022, as a case study, the results demonstrate that the dynamic escape route planning algorithm can provide an optimal real-time navigation path for humans in the presence of fire through the information fusion of UAVs and satellites.

Optimal Wildfire Escape Route Planning for Drones under Dynamic Fire and Smoke

In recent years, the increasing prevalence and intensity of wildfires have posed significant challenges to emergency response teams. The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, has shown promise in aiding wildfire management efforts. This work focuses on the development of an optimal wildfire escape route planning system specifically designed for drones, considering dynamic fire and smoke models. First, the location of the source of the wildfire can be well located by information fusion between UAV and satellite, and the road conditions in the vicinity of the fire can be assessed and analyzed using multi-channel remote sensing data. Second, the road network can be extracted and segmented in real time using UAV vision technology, and each road in the road network map can be given priority based on the results of road condition classification. Third, the spread model of dynamic fires calculates the new location of the fire source based on the fire intensity, wind speed and direction, and the radius increases as the wildfire spreads. Smoke is generated around the fire source to create a visual representation of a burning fire. Finally, based on the improved A* algorithm, which considers all the above factors, the UAV can quickly plan an escape route based on the starting and destination locations that avoid the location of the fire source and the area where it is spreading. By considering dynamic fire and smoke models, the proposed system enhances the safety and efficiency of drone operations in wildfire environments.

LLMs Accelerate Annotation for Medical Information Extraction

The unstructured nature of clinical notes within electronic health records often conceals vital patient-related information, making it challenging to access or interpret. To uncover this hidden information, specialized Natural Language Processing (NLP) models are required. However, training these models necessitates large amounts of labeled data, a process that is both time-consuming and costly when relying solely on human experts for annotation. In this paper, we propose an approach that combines Large Language Models (LLMs) with human expertise to create an efficient method for generating ground truth labels for medical text annotation. By utilizing LLMs in conjunction with human annotators, we significantly reduce the human annotation burden, enabling the rapid creation of labeled datasets. We rigorously evaluate our method on a medical information extraction task, demonstrating that our approach not only substantially cuts down on human intervention but also maintains high accuracy. The results highlight the potential of using LLMs to improve the utilization of unstructured clinical data, allowing for the swift deployment of tailored NLP solutions in healthcare.

SN 2022joj: A Peculiar Type Ia Supernova Possibly Driven by an Asymmetric Helium-shell Double Detonation

We present observations of SN 2022joj, a peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). SN 2022joj exhibits an unusually red $g_\mathrm{ZTF}-r_\mathrm{ZTF}$ color at early times and a rapid blueward evolution afterward. Around maximum brightness, SN 2022joj shows a high luminosity ($M_{g_\mathrm{ZTF},\mathrm{max}}\simeq-19.7$ mag), a blue broadband color ($g_\mathrm{ZTF}-r_\mathrm{ZTF}\simeq-0.2$ mag), and shallow Si II absorption lines, consistent with those of overluminous, SN 1991T-like events. The maximum-light spectrum also shows prominent absorption around 4200 Å, which resembles the Ti II features in subluminous, SN 1991bg-like events. Despite the blue optical-band colors, SN 2022joj exhibits extremely red ultraviolet minus optical colors at maximum luminosity ($u-v\simeq0.6$ mag and $uvw1 - v\simeq2.5$ mag), suggesting a suppression of flux at $\sim$2500--4000 Å. Strong C II lines are also detected at peak. We show that these unusual spectroscopic properties are broadly consistent with the helium-shell double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass ($M\simeq1 \mathrm{M_\odot}$) carbon/oxygen (C/O) white dwarf (WD) from a relatively massive helium shell ($M_s\simeq0.04$--$0.1 \mathrm{M_\odot}$), if observed along a line of sight roughly opposite to where the shell initially detonates. None of the existing models could quantitatively explain all the peculiarities observed in SN 2022joj. The low flux ratio of [Ni II] $λ$7378 to [Fe II] $λ$7155 emission in the late-time nebular spectra indicates a low yield of stable Ni isotopes, favoring a sub-Chandrasekhar mass progenitor. The significant blueshift measured in the [Fe II] $λ$7155 line is also consistent with an asymmetric chemical distribution in the ejecta, as is predicted in double-detonation models.

Sparsity independent Lyapunov exponent in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

The saturation of a recently proposed universal bound on the Lyapunov exponent has been conjectured to signal the existence of a gravity dual. This saturation occurs in the low temperature limit of the dense Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, $N$ Majorana fermions with $q$-body ($q>2$) infinite-range interactions. We calculate certain Out of Time Order Correlators (OTOC) for $N\le 64$ fermions for a highly sparse SYK model and find no significant dependence of the Lyapunov exponent on sparsity up to near the percolation limit where the Hamiltonian breaks up into blocks. This suggests that in the sparse case, the Lyapunov exponent also saturates the low-temperature bound. A key ingredient to reaching $N = 64$ is the development of a novel quantum spin model simulation library that implements highly-optimized matrix-free Krylov subspace methods on Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). This leads to a significantly lower simulation time as well as vastly reduced memory usage over previous approaches, while using modest computational resources. Strong sparsity-driven statistical fluctuations require both the use of a vastly larger number of disorder realizations with respect to the dense limit and a careful finite size scaling analysis. Our results potentially broadens the landscape of theories that may have a gravity analogue.

YOLO-BEV: Generating Bird's-Eye View in the Same Way as 2D Object Detection

Vehicle perception systems strive to achieve comprehensive and rapid visual interpretation of their surroundings for improved safety and navigation. We introduce YOLO-BEV, an efficient framework that harnesses a unique surrounding cameras setup to generate a 2D bird's-eye view of the vehicular environment. By strategically positioning eight cameras, each at a 45-degree interval, our system captures and integrates imagery into a coherent 3x3 grid format, leaving the center blank, providing an enriched spatial representation that facilitates efficient processing. In our approach, we employ YOLO's detection mechanism, favoring its inherent advantages of swift response and compact model structure. Instead of leveraging the conventional YOLO detection head, we augment it with a custom-designed detection head, translating the panoramically captured data into a unified bird's-eye view map of ego car. Preliminary results validate the feasibility of YOLO-BEV in real-time vehicular perception tasks. With its streamlined architecture and potential for rapid deployment due to minimized parameters, YOLO-BEV poses as a promising tool that may reshape future perspectives in autonomous driving systems.

Avalon's Game of Thoughts: Battle Against Deception through Recursive Contemplation

Recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) have brought remarkable success in the field of LLM-as-Agent. Nevertheless, a prevalent assumption is that the information processed by LLMs is consistently honest, neglecting the pervasive deceptive or misleading information in human society and AI-generated content. This oversight makes LLMs susceptible to malicious manipulations, potentially resulting in detrimental outcomes. This study utilizes the intricate Avalon game as a testbed to explore LLMs' potential in deceptive environments. Avalon, full of misinformation and requiring sophisticated logic, manifests as a "Game-of-Thoughts". Inspired by the efficacy of humans' recursive thinking and perspective-taking in the Avalon game, we introduce a novel framework, Recursive Contemplation (ReCon), to enhance LLMs' ability to identify and counteract deceptive information. ReCon combines formulation and refinement contemplation processes; formulation contemplation produces initial thoughts and speech, while refinement contemplation further polishes them. Additionally, we incorporate first-order and second-order perspective transitions into these processes respectively. Specifically, the first-order allows an LLM agent to infer others' mental states, and the second-order involves understanding how others perceive the agent's mental state. After integrating ReCon with different LLMs, extensive experiment results from the Avalon game indicate its efficacy in aiding LLMs to discern and maneuver around deceptive information without extra fine-tuning and data. Finally, we offer a possible explanation for the efficacy of ReCon and explore the current limitations of LLMs in terms of safety, reasoning, speaking style, and format, potentially furnishing insights for subsequent research.

Data-driven approach for modeling Reynolds stress tensor with invariance preservation

The present study represents a data-driven turbulent model with Galilean invariance preservation based on machine learning algorithm. The fully connected neural network (FCNN) and tensor basis neural network (TBNN) [Ling et al. (2016)] are established. The models are trained based on five kinds of flow cases with Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and high-fidelity data. The mappings between two invariant sets, mean strain rate tensor and mean rotation rate tensor as well as additional consideration of invariants of turbulent kinetic energy gradients, and the Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor are trained. The prediction of the Reynolds stress anisotropy tensor is treated as user's defined RANS turbulent model with a modified turbulent kinetic energy transport equation. The results show that both FCNN and TBNN models can provide more accurate predictions of the anisotropy tensor and turbulent state in square duct flow and periodic flow cases compared to the RANS model. The machine learning based turbulent model with turbulent kinetic energy gradient related invariants can improve the prediction precision compared with only mean strain rate tensor and mean rotation rate tensor based models. The TBNN model is able to predict a better flow velocity profile compared with FCNN model due to a prior physical knowledge.

A 12.4 day periodicity in a close binary system after a supernova

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes are the remnants of massive star explosions. Most massive stars reside in close binary systems, and the interplay between the companion star and the newly formed compact object has been theoretically explored, but signatures for binarity or evidence for the formation of a compact object during a supernova explosion are still lacking. Here we report a stripped-envelope supernova, SN 2022jli, which shows 12.4-day periodic undulations during the declining light curve. Narrow H$α$ emission is detected in late-time spectra with concordant periodic velocity shifts, likely arising from hydrogen gas stripped from a companion and accreted onto the compact remnant. A new Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray source is temporally and positionally consistent with SN 2022jli. The observed properties of SN 2022jli, including periodic undulations in the optical light curve, coherent H$α$ emission shifting, and evidence for association with a $γ$-ray source, point to the explosion of a massive star in a binary system leaving behind a bound compact remnant. Mass accretion from the companion star onto the compact object powers the light curve of the supernova and generates the $γ$-ray emission.

ILSGAN: Independent Layer Synthesis for Unsupervised Foreground-Background Segmentation

Unsupervised foreground-background segmentation aims at extracting salient objects from cluttered backgrounds, where Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) approaches, especially layered GANs, show great promise. However, without human annotations, they are typically prone to produce foreground and background layers with non-negligible semantic and visual confusion, dubbed "information leakage", resulting in notable degeneration of the generated segmentation mask. To alleviate this issue, we propose a simple-yet-effective explicit layer independence modeling approach, termed Independent Layer Synthesis GAN (ILSGAN), pursuing independent foreground-background layer generation by encouraging their discrepancy. Specifically, it targets minimizing the mutual information between visible and invisible regions of the foreground and background to spur interlayer independence. Through in-depth theoretical and experimental analyses, we justify that explicit layer independence modeling is critical to suppressing information leakage and contributes to impressive segmentation performance gains. Also, our ILSGAN achieves strong state-of-the-art generation quality and segmentation performance on complex real-world data. Code is available at: https://github.com/qrzou/ILSGAN

Robust Bayesian Inference for Moving Horizon Estimation

The accuracy of moving horizon estimation (MHE) suffers significantly in the presence of measurement outliers. Existing methods address this issue by treating measurements leading to large MHE cost function values as outliers, which are subsequently discarded. This strategy, achieved through solving combinatorial optimization problems, is confined to linear systems to guarantee computational tractability and stability. Contrasting these heuristic solutions, our work reexamines MHE from a Bayesian perspective, unveils the fundamental issue of its lack of robustness: MHE's sensitivity to outliers results from its reliance on the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence, where both outliers and inliers are equally considered. To tackle this problem, we propose a robust Bayesian inference framework for MHE, integrating a robust divergence measure to reduce the impact of outliers. In particular, the proposed approach prioritizes the fitting of uncontaminated data and lowers the weight of contaminated ones, instead of directly discarding all potentially contaminated measurements, which may lead to undesirable removal of uncontaminated data. A tuning parameter is incorporated into the framework to adjust the robustness degree to outliers. Notably, the classical MHE can be interpreted as a special case of the proposed approach as the parameter converges to zero. In addition, our method involves only minor modification to the classical MHE stage cost, thus avoiding the high computational complexity associated with previous outlier-robust methods and inherently suitable for nonlinear systems. Most importantly, our method provides robustness and stability guarantees, which are often missing in other outlier-robust Bayes filters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on simulations subject to outliers following different distributions, as well as on physical experiment data.

Giant nonlinear optical wave mixing in van der Waals compound MnPSe3

Optical nonlinearities, one of the most fascinating properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, are essential for exploring novel physics in 2D systems and developing next-generation nonlinear optical applications. While tremendous efforts have been made to discover and optimize second-order nonlinear optical responses in various 2D materials, higher odd-order nonlinear processes, which are in general much less efficient than second order ones, have been paid less attention despite their scientific and applicational significance. Here we report giant odd-order nonlinear optical wave mixing in a correlated van der Waals insulator MnPSe3 at room temperature. Illuminated by two near-infrared femtosecond lasers simultaneously, it generates a series of degenerate and non-degenerate four- and six-wave mixing outputs, with conversion efficiencies up to the order of $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-6}$ for the four- and six-wave mixing processes, respectively, far exceeding the efficiencies of several prototypical nonlinear optical materials (GaSe, LiNbO3). This work highlights the intriguing prospect of transition metal phosphorous trichalcogenides for future research of the nonlinear light matter interactions in 2D systems and for potential nonlinear photonic applications.

An efficient numerical method for charged particle transport based on hybrid collision model and machine learning

Charged particle transport is an important energy transport mode in the combustion process of inertial confinement fusion plasma. On the one hand, charged particles inside the hot spot have a strong non-equilibrium effect, so it is necessary to solve the Boltzmann transport equation to simulate the energy transport process of charged particles accurately. On the other hand, charged particle transport has the characteristics of high collision frequency and complex blocking power, so the calculation amount of the traditional Monte Carlo algorithm is difficult to bear under the existing calculation conditions. Aiming at the computational bottleneck caused by the large Coulomb potential collision cross-section, we developed a hybrid collision model which greatly reduced the computational cost while maintaining the second-order accuracy of the collision process. In order to solve the computational bottleneck caused by the complex blocking power model, we developed a neural network model based on machine learning to achieve formal unity and efficient calculation of different blocking power. Based on the calculation method, we developed the charged particle transport MC function modules of the RDMG program and LARED-S program and applied them to the study of critical target performance of inertial confinement fusion, which showed good computational efficiency and accuracy.

An implicit unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method for radiative transport process

The unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method (UGKWP) has been developed for the multiscale gas, plasma, and multiphase flow transport processes for the past years. In this work, we propose an implicit unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (IUGKWP) method to remove the CFL time step constraint. Based on the local integral solution of the radiative transfer equation (RTE), the particle transport processes are categorized into the long-$λ$ streaming process and the short-$λ$ streaming process comparing to a local physical characteristic time $t_p$. In the construction of the IUGKWP method, the long-$λ$ streaming process is tracked by the implicit Monte Carlo (IMC) method; the short-$λ$ streaming process is evolved by solving the implicit moments equations; and the photon distribution is closed by a local integral solution of RTE. In the IUGKWP method, the multiscale flux of radiation energy and the multiscale closure of photon distribution are constructed based on the local integral solution. The IUGKWP method preserves the second-order asymptotic expansion of RTE in the optically thick regime and adapts its computational complexity to the flow regime. The numerical dissipation is well controlled, and the teleportation error is significantly reduced in the optically thick regime. The computational complexity of the IUGKWP method decreases exponentially as the Knudsen number approaches zero, and the computational efficiency is remarkably improved in the optically thick regime. The IUGKWP is formulated on a generalized unstructured mesh, and multidimensional 2D and 3D algorithms are developed. Numerical tests are presented to validate the capability of IUGKWP in capturing the multiscale photon transport process. The algorithm and code will apply in the engineering applications of inertial confinement fusion (ICF).

A rigorous model reduction for the anisotropic-scattering transport process

In this letter, we propose a reduced-order model to bridge the particle transport mechanics and the macroscopic fluid dynamics in the highly scattered regime. A rigorous mathematical derivation and a concise physical interpretation are presented for an anisotropic-scattering transport process with arbitrary order of scattering kernel. The prediction of the theoretical model perfectly agrees with the numerical experiments. A clear picture of the diffusion physics is revealed for the neutral particle transport in the asymptotic optically thick regime.

Retinex-guided Channel-grouping based Patch Swap for Arbitrary Style Transfer

The basic principle of the patch-matching based style transfer is to substitute the patches of the content image feature maps by the closest patches from the style image feature maps. Since the finite features harvested from one single aesthetic style image are inadequate to represent the rich textures of the content natural image, existing techniques treat the full-channel style feature patches as simple signal tensors and create new style feature patches via signal-level fusion, which ignore the implicit diversities existed in style features and thus fail for generating better stylised results. In this paper, we propose a Retinex theory guided, channel-grouping based patch swap technique to solve the above challenges. Channel-grouping strategy groups the style feature maps into surface and texture channels, which prevents the winner-takes-all problem. Retinex theory based decomposition controls a more stable channel code rate generation. In addition, we provide complementary fusion and multi-scale generation strategy to prevent unexpected black area and over-stylised results respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing techniques in providing more style-consistent textures while keeping the content fidelity.
