Wireless Communication Using Metal Reflectors: Reflection Modelling and Experimental Verification

Wireless communication using fully passive metal reflectors is a promising technique for coverage expansion, signal enhancement, rank improvement and blind-zone compensation, thanks to its appealing features including zero energy consumption, ultra low cost, signaling- and maintenance-free, easy deployment and full compatibility with existing and future wireless systems. However, a prevalent understanding for reflection by metal plates is based on Snell's Law, i.e., signal can only be received when the observation angle equals to the incident angle, which is valid only when the electrical dimension of the metal plate is extremely large. In this paper, we rigorously derive a general reflection model that is applicable to metal reflectors of any size, any orientation, and any linear polarization. The derived model is given compactly in terms of the radar cross section (RCS) of the metal plate, as a function of its physical dimensions and orientation vectors, as well as the wave polarization and the wave deflection vector, i.e., the change of direction from the incident wave direction to the observation direction. Furthermore, experimental results based on actual field measurements are provided to validate the accuracy of our developed model and demonstrate the great potential of communications using metal reflectors.

MTCSNN: Multi-task Clinical Siamese Neural Network for Diabetic Retinopathy Severity Prediction

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) has become one of the leading causes of vision impairment in working-aged people and is a severe problem worldwide. However, most of the works ignored the ordinal information of labels. In this project, we propose a novel design MTCSNN, a Multi-task Clinical Siamese Neural Network for Diabetic Retinopathy severity prediction task. The novelty of this project is to utilize the ordinal information among labels and add a new regression task, which can help the model learn more discriminative feature embedding for fine-grained classification tasks. We perform comprehensive experiments over the RetinaMNIST, comparing MTCSNN with other models like ResNet-18, 34, 50. Our results indicate that MTCSNN outperforms the benchmark models in terms of AUC and accuracy on the test dataset.

AVA-AVD: Audio-Visual Speaker Diarization in the Wild

Audio-visual speaker diarization aims at detecting "who spoke when" using both auditory and visual signals. Existing audio-visual diarization datasets are mainly focused on indoor environments like meeting rooms or news studios, which are quite different from in-the-wild videos in many scenarios such as movies, documentaries, and audience sitcoms. To develop diarization methods for these challenging videos, we create the AVA Audio-Visual Diarization (AVA-AVD) dataset. Our experiments demonstrate that adding AVA-AVD into training set can produce significantly better diarization models for in-the-wild videos despite that the data is relatively small. Moreover, this benchmark is challenging due to the diverse scenes, complicated acoustic conditions, and completely off-screen speakers. As a first step towards addressing the challenges, we design the Audio-Visual Relation Network (AVR-Net) which introduces a simple yet effective modality mask to capture discriminative information based on face visibility. Experiments show that our method not only can outperform state-of-the-art methods but is more robust as varying the ratio of off-screen speakers. Our data and code has been made publicly available at https://github.com/showlab/AVA-AVD.

Dynamics of microswimmers near a soft penetrable interface

Few simulations exist for microswimmers near deformable interfaces. Here, we present numerical simulations of the hydrodynamic flows associated with a single microswimmer embedded in a binary fluid mixture. The two fluids demix, separated by a penetrable and deformable interface that we assume to be initially prepared in its planar ground-state. We find that the microswimmer can either penetrate the interface, move parallel to it or bounce back off it. We analyze how the trajectory depends on the swimmer type (pusher/puller) and the angle of incidence with respect to the interface. Our simulations are performed in a system with periodic boundary conditions, corresponding to an infinite array of fluid interfaces. A puller reaches a steady state in which it either swims parallel to the interface or selects a perpendicular orientation, repeatedly penetrating through the interface. In contrast, a pusher follows a bouncing trajectory between two interfaces. We discuss several examples in biology in which swimmers penetrate soft interfaces. Our work can be seen as a highly simplified model of such processes.

Design and Commissioning of A Beam Distribution System for Multiple Undulator Line Operation of the SXFEL-UF

As an important measure of improving the efficiency and usability of X-ray free electron laser facilities, simultaneous operation of multiple undulator lines realized by a beam distribution system has become a standard configuration in the recent built XFEL facilities. In Shanghai, SXFEL-UF, the first soft X-ray free electron laser user facility in China, has finished construction and started commissioning recently. Electron beam from linac is alternately distributed between the two parallel undulator beam lines by a beam distribution system with a 6° deflection line. The beam distribution system is designed to keep the beam properties like low emittance, high peak charge and small bunch length from being spoiled. Beam collective effects such as the dispersion, coherent synchrotron radiation and micro-bunching instability should be well suppressed to guarantee the beam quality. In this work, the detailed physics design of the beam distribution system is described and the recent commissioning result is reported.

Reinforcement Routing on Proximity Graph for Efficient Recommendation

We focus on Maximum Inner Product Search (MIPS), which is an essential problem in many machine learning communities. Given a query, MIPS finds the most similar items with the maximum inner products. Methods for Nearest Neighbor Search (NNS) which is usually defined on metric space don't exhibit the satisfactory performance for MIPS problem since inner product is a non-metric function. However, inner products exhibit many good properties compared with metric functions, such as avoiding vanishing and exploding gradients. As a result, inner product is widely used in many recommendation systems, which makes efficient Maximum Inner Product Search a key for speeding up many recommendation systems. Graph based methods for NNS problem show the superiorities compared with other class methods. Each data point of the database is mapped to a node of the proximity graph. Nearest neighbor search in the database can be converted to route on the proximity graph to find the nearest neighbor for the query. This technique can be used to solve MIPS problem. Instead of searching the nearest neighbor for the query, we search the item with maximum inner product with query on the proximity graph. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement model to train an agent to search on the proximity graph automatically for MIPS problem if we lack the ground truths of training queries. If we know the ground truths of some training queries, our model can also utilize these ground truths by imitation learning to improve the agent's search ability. By experiments, we can see that our proposed mode which combines reinforcement learning with imitation learning shows the superiorities over the state-of-the-art methods

A synchrotron-based kilowatt-level radiation source for EUV lithograph

A compact damping ring with limited circumference of about 160 m is proposed for producing kilowatt-level coherent EUV radiation. The electron bunch in the ring is modulated by a 257nm wavelength laser with the help of the angular dispersion induced micro-bunching method [C. Feng and Z. Zhao, Sci. Rep. 7, 4724 (2017)]. Coherent radiation at 13.5 nm with an average power of about 2.5 kW can be achieved with the state-of-the-art accelerator and laser technologies.

Scalable Data Annotation Pipeline for High-Quality Large Speech Datasets Development

This paper introduces a human-in-the-loop (HITL) data annotation pipeline to generate high-quality, large-scale speech datasets. The pipeline combines human and machine advantages to more quickly, accurately, and cost-effectively annotate datasets with machine pre-labeling and fully manual auditing. Quality control mechanisms such as blind testing, behavior monitoring, and data validation have been adopted in the annotation pipeline to mitigate potential bias introduced by machine-generated labels. Our A/B testing and pilot results demonstrated the HITL pipeline can improve annotation speed and capacity by at least 80% and quality is comparable to or higher than manual double pass annotation. We are leveraging this scalable pipeline to create and continuously grow ultra-high volume off-the-shelf (UHV-OTS) speech corpora for multiple languages, with the capability to expand to 10,000+ hours per language annually. Customized datasets can be produced from the UHV-OTS corpora using dynamic packaging. UHV-OTS is a long-term Appen project to support commercial and academic research data needs in speech processing. Appen will donate a number of free speech datasets from the UHV-OTS each year to support academic and open source community research under the CC-BY-SA license. We are also releasing the code of the data pre-processing and pre-tagging pipeline under the Apache 2.0 license to allow reproduction of the results reported in the paper.

Energy Recovery Linac Based Fully Coherent Light Source

Energy recovery linac (ERL) holds great promise for generating high repetition-rate and high brightness electron beams. The application of ERL to drive a free-electron laser is currently limited by its low peak current. In this paper, we consider the combination of ERL with the recently proposed angler-dispersion induced microbunching technique to generate fully coherent radiation pulses with high average brightness and tunable pulse length. Start-to-end simulations have been performed based on a low energy ERL (600 MeV) for generating coherent EUV radiation pulses. The results indicate an average brightness over 10^25 phs/s/mm2/mrad2/0.1%BW and average power of about 100 W at 13.5 nm or 20 W with the spectral resolution of about 0.5 meV with the proposed technique. Further extension of the proposed scheme to shorter wavelength based on an ERL complex is also discussed.

Exploiting Network Structures to Improve Semantic Representation for the Financial Domain

This paper presents the participation of the MiniTrue team in the FinSim-3 shared task on learning semantic similarities for the financial domain in English language. Our approach combines contextual embeddings learned by transformer-based language models with network structures embeddings extracted on external knowledge sources, to create more meaningful representations of financial domain entities and terms. For this, two BERT based language models and a knowledge graph embedding model are used. Besides, we propose a voting function to joint three basic models for the final inference. Experimental results show that the model with the knowledge graph embeddings has achieved a superior result than these models with only contextual embeddings. Nevertheless, we also observe that our voting function brings an extra benefit to the final system.

Wireless Communication with Extremely Large-Scale Intelligent Reflecting Surface

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology for wireless communications, thanks to its potential capability to engineer the radio environment. However, in practice, such an envisaged benefit is attainable only when the passive IRS is of a sufficiently large size, for which the conventional uniform plane wave (UPW)-based channel model may become inaccurate. In this paper, we pursue a new channel modelling and performance analysis for wireless communications with extremely large-scale IRS (XL-IRS). By taking into account the variations in signal's amplitude and projected aperture across different reflecting elements, we derive both lower- and upper-bounds of the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the general uniform planar array (UPA)-based XL-IRS. Our results reveal that, instead of scaling quadratically with the increased number of reflecting elements M as in the conventional UPW model, the SNR under the more practically applicable non-UPW model increases with M only with a diminishing return and gets saturated eventually. To gain more insights, we further study the special case of uniform linear array (ULA)-based XL-IRS, for which a closed-form SNR expression in terms of the IRS size and transmitter/receiver location is derived. This result shows that the SNR mainly depends on the two geometric angles formed by the transmitter/receiver locations with the IRS, as well as the boundary points of the IRS. Numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate the importance of proper channel modelling for wireless communications aided by XL-IRS.

A Simple Voting Mechanism for Online Sexist Content Identification

This paper presents the participation of the MiniTrue team in the EXIST 2021 Challenge on the sexism detection in social media task for English and Spanish. Our approach combines the language models with a simple voting mechanism for the sexist label prediction. For this, three BERT based models and a voting function are used. Experimental results show that our final model with the voting function has achieved the best results among our four models, which means that our voting mechanism brings an extra benefit to our system. Nevertheless, we also observe that our system is robust to data sources and languages.

Influence of quantum fluctuations on the superfluid critical velocity of a one-dimensional Bose gas

The mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation with repulsive interactions exhibits frictionless flow when stirred by an obstacle below a critical velocity. Here we go beyond the mean-field approximation to examine the influence of quantum fluctuations on this threshold behaviour in a one-dimensional Bose gas in a ring. Using the truncated Wigner approximation, we perform simulations of ensembles of trajectories where the Bose gas is stirred with a repulsive obstacle below the mean-field critical velocity. We observe the probabilistic formation of grey solitons which subsequently decay, leading to an increase in the momentum of the fluid. The formation of the first soliton leads to a soliton cascade, such that the fluid rapidly accelerates to minimise the speed difference with the obstacle. We measure the initial rate of momentum transfer, and relate it to macroscopic tunnelling between quantised flow states in the ring.

Self-Amplification of Coherent Energy Modulation in Seeded Free-Electron Lasers

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby significantly reducing the requirement of an external laser system. Driven by this scheme, we experimentally realize high harmonic generation in a seeded FEL using an unprecedentedly small energy modulation. An electron beam with a laser-induced energy modulation as small as 1.8 times the slice energy spread is used for lasing at the 7th harmonic of a 266-nm seed laser in a single-stage high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) setup and the 30th harmonic of the seed laser in a two-stage HGHG setup. The results mark a major step towards a high-repetition-rate, fully coherent X-ray FEL.

Fermi liquid behavior and colossal magnetoresistance in layered MoOCl2

A characteristic of a Fermi liquid is the T^2 dependence of its resistivity, sometimes referred to as the Baber law. However, for most metals, this behavior is only restricted to very low temperatures, usually below 20 K. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that for the single-crystal van der Waals layered material MoOCl2, the Baber law holds in a wide temperature range up to ~120 K, indicating that the electron-electron scattering plays a dominant role in this material. Combining with the specific heat measurement, we find that the modified Kadowaki-Woods ratio of the material agrees well with many other strongly correlated metals. Furthermore, in the magneto-transport measurement, a colossal magneto-resistance is observed, which reaches ~350% at 9 T and displays no sign of saturation. With the help of first-principles calculations, we attribute this behavior to the presence of open orbits on the Fermi surface. We also suggest that the dominance of electron-electron scattering is related to an incipient charge density wave state of the material. Our results establish MoOCl2 as a strongly correlated metal and shed light on the underlying physical mechanism, which may open a new path for exploring the effects of electron-electron interaction in van der Waals layered structures.

Extreme bright coherent synchrotron radiation produced in a low emittance electron storage ring by the angular dispersion induced microbunching scheme

Generation of extreme bright coherent synchrotron radiation in a short wavelength range is of remarkable interest in the synchrotron light source community. In this paper, a novel technique is adopted to produce the coherent radiation which uses an angular dispersion to enhance the micro-bunch by a tiny amplitude of energy modulation. This scheme can be inserted in a long straight section of a storage ring. A lattice design of an extreme-low emittance storage ring with 3.5 GeV energy is presented in this paper, which employs a higher order achromat (HOA) concept. We show the design results for the multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice with an emittance of 20 pm-rad in about 900-meter circumference. Numerical simulations demonstrated that this angular dispersion induced micro-bunch scheme can be used to generate coherent radiation near soft x-ray region, the repetition rate can reach 10 kHz and the spectral brightness can reach 3*10^24phs/s/mm^2/mrad^2/0.1%BW.

Superfluid critical velocity of an elongated harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We numerically model experiments on the superfluid critical velocity of an elongated, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate as reported by [P. Engels and C. Atherton, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 160405 (2007)]. These experiments swept an obstacle formed by an optical dipole potential through the long axis of the condensate at constant velocity. Their results found an increase in the resulting density fluctuations of the condensate above an obstacle velocity of $v\approx 0.3$ mm/s, suggestive of a superfluid critical velocity substantially less than the average speed of sound. However, our analysis shows that the that the experimental observations of Engels and Atherton are in fact consistent with a superfluid critical velocity equal to the local speed of sound. We construct a model of energy transfer to the system based on the local density approximation to explain the experimental observations, and propose and simulate experiments that sweep potentials through harmonically trapped condensates at a constant fraction of the local speed of sound. We find that this leads to a sudden onset of excitations above a critical fraction, in agreement with the Landau criterion for superfluidity.

Obliquely Incident Laser and Electron Beam Interaction in an Undulator

The angular drift of a laser beam is of particular concern in applications such as seeded free-electron lasers. A systematical study of the obliquely incident laser and electron beam interaction in an undulator is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the interaction would imprint energy and angular modulations on the electron beam simultaneously. Compared with the normally incident pattern, the obliquely incident laser-electron interaction leads to reductions in the bunching factors of HGHG and EEHG. In the meanwhile, proactive applications of this multi-dimensional modulation technique may bring vitality to the field of laser-electron manipulation
