Formation of a streamer blob via the merger of multiple plasma clumps below 2Rs

Context. Propagating streamer blobs could be an important source of disturbances in the solar wind. Direct observations on formation of streamer blobs could be a proxy for understanding the formation of small-scale structures and disturbances in the solar wind. Aims. We aim to investigate how a streamer blob is formed before it is observed in the outer corona. Methods. Usingspecialcoordinated-observationsfromSOHO/LASCO,GOES/SUVIandSDO/AIA, we study the precursors of a streamer blob as seen in the corona below 2.0 solar radii (Rs). Results. We found that the streamer blob was formed due to the gradual merging of three clumps of brightenings initiated from the lower corona at about 1.8Rs, which is likely driven by expansion of the loop system at the base of the streamer. The acceleration of the blob starts from 1.9Rs or lower. It propagates along the south flank of the streamer where an expanding elongated brightening occurs coincidently. Conclusions. Our observations demonstrate that formation of a streamer blob is a complex process. We suggest that the expansion of the loop results in a pinching-off flux-rope-like blob at the loop apex below 2Rs. When the blob moves outward, it can be transferred across the overlying loops through interchange/component magnetic reconnection and then is released into the open field system. When the blob moves toward open field lines, interchange magnetic reconnections might also occur, and that can accelerate the plasma blob intermittently whilst allow it to transfer across the open field lines. Such dynamics in a streamer blob might further trigger small-scale disturbances in the solar wind such as switchbacks in the inner heliosphere.

From Awareness to Action: Exploring End-User Empowerment Interventions for Dark Patterns in UX

The study of UX dark patterns, i.e., UI designs that seek to manipulate user behaviors, often for the benefit of online services, has drawn significant attention in the CHI and CSCW communities in recent years. To complement previous studies in addressing dark patterns from (1) the designer's perspective on education and advocacy for ethical designs; and (2) the policymaker's perspective on new regulations, we propose an end-user-empowerment intervention approach that helps users (1) raise the awareness of dark patterns and understand their underlying design intents; (2) take actions to counter the effects of dark patterns using a web augmentation approach. Through a two-phase co-design study, including 5 co-design workshops (N=12) and a 2-week technology probe study (N=15), we reported findings on the understanding of users' needs, preferences, and challenges in handling dark patterns and investigated the feedback and reactions to users' awareness of and action on dark patterns being empowered in a realistic in-situ setting.

Thermocrystallization of lattice dipolar bosons coupled to a high-finesse cavity

Investigating finite temperature effects on quantum phases is key to their experimental realization. Finite temperature, and the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations can undermine properties and/or key features of quantum systems but they can also bring upon interesting phenomena. In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation of the finite temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional lattice dipolar bosons coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity. Interestingly, we observe that checkerboard density-density correlations are enhanced at finite temperature. Indeed, we found that finite temperature drives a superfluid ground state into a normal state which will then develop checkerboard order at higher temperatures. We show that this effect is solely due to the cavity-mediated interactions. We also confirm that the supersolid checkerboard phase survives for a wide range of filling factors up to temperature scale of the order of half hopping amplitude, while the checkerboard diagonal order can survive up to temperatures of a few hopping amplitudes.

Neural Sinkhorn Gradient Flow

Wasserstein Gradient Flows (WGF) with respect to specific functionals have been widely used in the machine learning literature. Recently, neural networks have been adopted to approximate certain intractable parts of the underlying Wasserstein gradient flow and result in efficient inference procedures. In this paper, we introduce the Neural Sinkhorn Gradient Flow (NSGF) model, which parametrizes the time-varying velocity field of the Wasserstein gradient flow w.r.t. the Sinkhorn divergence to the target distribution starting a given source distribution. We utilize the velocity field matching training scheme in NSGF, which only requires samples from the source and target distribution to compute an empirical velocity field approximation. Our theoretical analyses show that as the sample size increases to infinity, the mean-field limit of the empirical approximation converges to the true underlying velocity field. To further enhance model efficiency on high-dimensional tasks, a two-phase NSGF++ model is devised, which first follows the Sinkhorn flow to approach the image manifold quickly ($\le 5$ NFEs) and then refines the samples along a simple straight flow. Numerical experiments with synthetic and real-world benchmark datasets support our theoretical results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

TPD: Enhancing Student Language Model Reasoning via Principle Discovery and Guidance

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently showcased remarkable reasoning abilities. However, larger models often surpass their smaller counterparts in reasoning tasks, posing the challenge of effectively transferring these capabilities from larger models. Existing approaches heavily rely on extensive fine-tuning data or continuous interactions with a superior teacher LLM during inference. We introduce a principle-based teacher-student framework called ``Teaching via Principle Discovery'' (TPD) to address these limitations. Inspired by human learning mechanisms, TPD mimics the interaction between a teacher and a student using a principle-based approach. The teacher LLM generates problem-solving instructions and corrective principles based on the student LLM's errors. These principles guide the refinement of instructions and the selection of instructive examples from a validation set. This enables the student model to learn from both the teacher's guidance and its own mistakes. Once the student model begins making inferences, TPD requires no further intervention from the teacher LLM or humans. Through extensive experiments across eight reasoning tasks, we demonstrate the effectiveness of TPD. Compared to standard chain-of-thought prompting, TPD significantly improves the student model's performance, achieving $6.2\%$ improvement on average.

Detecting Entanglement by Pure Bosonic Extension

In the realm of quantum information theory, the detection and quantification of quantum entanglement stand as paramount tasks. The relative entropy of entanglement (REE) serves as a prominent measure of entanglement, with extensive applications spanning numerous related fields. The positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion, while providing an efficient method for the computation of REE, unfortunately, falls short when dealing with bound entanglement. In this study, we propose a method termed "pure bosonic extension" to enhance the practicability of $k$-bosonic extensions, which approximates the set of separable states from the "outside", through a hierarchical structure. It enables efficient characterization of the set of $k$-bosonic extendible states, facilitating the derivation of accurate lower bounds for REE. Compared to the Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) approach, such as the symmetric/bosonic extension function in QETLAB, our algorithm supports much larger dimensions and higher values of extension $k$.

LightSleepNet: Design of a Personalized Portable Sleep Staging System Based on Single-Channel EEG

This paper proposed LightSleepNet - a light-weight, 1-d Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based personalized architecture for real-time sleep staging, which can be implemented on various mobile platforms with limited hardware resources. The proposed architecture only requires an input of 30s single-channel EEG signal for the classification. Two residual blocks consisting of group 1-d convolution are used instead of the traditional convolution layers to remove the redundancy in the CNN. Channel shuffles are inserted into each convolution layer to improve the accuracy. In order to avoid over-fitting to the training set, a Global Average Pooling (GAP) layer is used to replace the fully connected layer, which further reduces the total number of the model parameters significantly. A personalized algorithm combining Adaptive Batch Normalization (AdaBN) and gradient re-weighting is proposed for unsupervised domain adaptation. A higher priority is given to examples that are easy to transfer to the new subject, and the algorithm could be personalized for new subjects without re-training. Experimental results show a state-of-the-art overall accuracy of 83.8% with only 45.76 Million Floating-point Operations per Second (MFLOPs) computation and 43.08 K parameters.

A Variational Approach to Unique Determinedness in Pure-state Tomography

In pure-state tomography, the concept of unique determinedness (UD) -- the ability to uniquely determine pure states from measurement results -- is crucial. This study presents a new variational approach to examining UD, offering a robust solution to the challenges associated with the construction and certification of UD measurement schemes. We put forward an effective algorithm that minimizes a specially defined loss function, enabling the differentiation between UD and non-UD measurement schemes. This leads to the discovery of numerous optimal pure-state Pauli measurement schemes across a variety of dimensions. Additionally, we discern an alignment between uniquely determined among pure states (UDP) and uniquely determined among all states (UDA) in qubit systems when utilizing Pauli measurements, underscoring its intrinsic robustness under pure-state recovery. We further interpret the physical meaning of our loss function, bolstered by a theoretical framework. Our study not only propels the understanding of UD in quantum state tomography forward, but also delivers valuable practical insights for experimental applications, highlighting the need for a balanced approach between mathematical optimality and experimental pragmatism.

On the Effectiveness of Function-Level Vulnerability Detectors for Inter-Procedural Vulnerabilities

Software vulnerabilities are a major cyber threat and it is important to detect them. One important approach to detecting vulnerabilities is to use deep learning while treating a program function as a whole, known as function-level vulnerability detectors. However, the limitation of this approach is not understood. In this paper, we investigate its limitation in detecting one class of vulnerabilities known as inter-procedural vulnerabilities, where the to-be-patched statements and the vulnerability-triggering statements belong to different functions. For this purpose, we create the first Inter-Procedural Vulnerability Dataset (InterPVD) based on C/C++ open-source software, and we propose a tool dubbed VulTrigger for identifying vulnerability-triggering statements across functions. Experimental results show that VulTrigger can effectively identify vulnerability-triggering statements and inter-procedural vulnerabilities. Our findings include: (i) inter-procedural vulnerabilities are prevalent with an average of 2.8 inter-procedural layers; and (ii) function-level vulnerability detectors are much less effective in detecting to-be-patched functions of inter-procedural vulnerabilities than detecting their counterparts of intra-procedural vulnerabilities.

Large Language Models are Efficient Learners of Noise-Robust Speech Recognition

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have promoted generative error correction (GER) for automatic speech recognition (ASR), which leverages the rich linguistic knowledge and powerful reasoning ability of LLMs to improve recognition results. The latest work proposes a GER benchmark with HyPoradise dataset to learn the mapping from ASR N-best hypotheses to ground-truth transcription by efficient LLM finetuning, which shows great effectiveness but lacks specificity on noise-robust ASR. In this work, we extend the benchmark to noisy conditions and investigate if we can teach LLMs to perform denoising for GER just like what robust ASR do}, where one solution is introducing noise information as a conditioner into LLM. However, directly incorporating noise embeddings from audio encoder could harm the LLM tuning due to cross-modality gap. To this end, we propose to extract a language-space noise embedding from the N-best list to represent the noise conditions of source speech, which can promote the denoising process in GER. Furthermore, in order to enhance its representation ability of audio noise, we design a knowledge distillation (KD) approach via mutual information estimation to distill the real noise information in audio embeddings to our language embedding. Experiments on various latest LLMs demonstrate our approach achieves a new breakthrough with up to 53.9% correction improvement in terms of word error rate while with limited training data. Analysis shows that our language-space noise embedding can well represent the noise conditions of source speech, under which off-the-shelf LLMs show strong ability of language-space denoising.

FinSQL: Model-Agnostic LLMs-based Text-to-SQL Framework for Financial Analysis

Text-to-SQL, which provides zero-code interface for operating relational databases, has gained much attention in financial analysis; because, financial professionals may not well-skilled in SQL programming. However, until now, there is no practical Text-to-SQL benchmark dataset for financial analysis, and existing Text-to-SQL methods have not considered the unique characteristics of databases in financial applications, such as commonly existing wide tables. To address these issues, we collect a practical Text-to-SQL benchmark dataset and propose a model-agnostic Large Language Model (LLMs)-based Text-to-SQL framework for financial analysis. The benchmark dataset, BULL, is collected from the practical financial analysis business of Hundsun Technologies Inc., including databases for fund, stock, and macro economy. Besides, the proposed LLMs-based Text-to-SQL framework, FinSQL, provides a systematic treatment for financial Text-to-SQL from the perspectives of prompt construction, parameter-efficient fine-tuning and output calibration. Extensive experimental results on BULL demonstrate that FinSQL achieves the state-of-the-art Text-to-SQL performance at a small cost; furthermore, FinSQL can bring up to 36.64% performance improvement in scenarios requiring few-shot cross-database model transfer.

3DMIT: 3D Multi-modal Instruction Tuning for Scene Understanding

The remarkable potential of multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) in comprehending both vision and language information has been widely acknowledged. However, the scarcity of 3D scenes-language pairs in comparison to their 2D counterparts, coupled with the inadequacy of existing approaches in understanding of 3D scenes by LLMs, poses a significant challenge. In response, we collect and construct an extensive dataset comprising 75K instruction-response pairs tailored for 3D scenes. This dataset addresses tasks related to 3D VQA, 3D grounding, and 3D conversation. To further enhance the integration of 3D spatial information into LLMs, we introduce a novel and efficient prompt tuning paradigm, 3DMIT. This paradigm eliminates the alignment stage between 3D scenes and language and extends the instruction prompt with the 3D modality information including the entire scene and segmented objects. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method across diverse tasks in the 3D scene domain and find that our approach serves as a strategic means to enrich LLMs' comprehension of the 3D world. Our code is available at https://github.com/staymylove/3DMIT.

Misconfidence-based Demonstration Selection for LLM In-Context Learning

In-context learning with large language models (LLMs) excels at adapting to various tasks rapidly. However, its success hinges on carefully selecting demonstrations, which remains an obstacle in practice. Current approaches to this problem either rely on hard-to-acquire external supervision or require frequent interactions with LLMs, resulting in high costs. We propose a new method called In-Context Reflection (ICR) to overcome these challenges. ICR strategically selects demonstrations to reduce the discrepancy between the LLM's outputs and the actual input-output mappings. Specifically, ICR starts with a random set of initial demonstrations, then iteratively refines it. In each step, it analyzes a pool of candidate examples and identifies the ones most likely to challenge the LLM's current understanding, measured by a new metric called misconfidence. These most confusing examples are then selected to replace the less informative demonstrations in the current set. Our comprehensive evaluation across five diverse datasets encompassing 13 subtasks shows the efficacy of ICR. Compared to existing methods, ICR achieves an average performance boost of 4%, while demonstrating remarkable cross-task generalization capabilities.

Detecting dark matter with extreme mass-ratio inspirals

Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs), where a small compact object inspiralls onto a supermassive black hole, are excellent sources for the space-based laser interferometer gravitational wave (GW) detectors. The presence of dark matter surrounding the supermassive black hole will influence the binary orbital evolution and emitted gravitational waveform. By direct observation of GW signals, we assess the detector's capability to detect whether an EMRI is immersed in a dark matter halo and to measure its characteristic spatial scale $a_0$ and mass $M_{\rm halo}$. Apart from the GW emission, the dynamical friction and accretion caused by the dark matter halo can also affect the dynamics of an EMRI, leaving detectable signatures in the emitted gravitational signal. We perform a Fisher-matrix error analysis to estimate the errors of parameters $a_0$ and $M_{\rm halo}$, as well as their correlation. The results show that the highly correlated parameters $a_0$ and $M_{\rm halo}$ deteriorate the detector's ability to measure dark matter even though the dephasing and mismatch between signals with and without dark matter indicate much difference. The effects of the dynamical friction and accretion can break possible degeneracies between parameters $a_0$ and $M_{\rm halo}$, thus greatly decreasing the uncertainty by about one order of magnitude.

Multi-Channel Multi-Domain based Knowledge Distillation Algorithm for Sleep Staging with Single-Channel EEG

This paper proposed a Multi-Channel Multi-Domain (MCMD) based knowledge distillation algorithm for sleep staging using single-channel EEG. Both knowledge from different domains and different channels are learnt in the proposed algorithm, simultaneously. A multi-channel pre-training and single-channel fine-tuning scheme is used in the proposed work. The knowledge from different channels in the source domain is transferred to the single-channel model in the target domain. A pre-trained teacher-student model scheme is used to distill knowledge from the multi-channel teacher model to the single-channel student model combining with output transfer and intermediate feature transfer in the target domain. The proposed algorithm achieves a state-of-the-art single-channel sleep staging accuracy of 86.5%, with only 0.6% deterioration from the state-of-the-art multi-channel model. There is an improvement of 2% compared to the baseline model. The experimental results show that knowledge from multiple domains (different datasets) and multiple channels (e.g. EMG, EOG) could be transferred to single-channel sleep staging.

Towards Modeling Uncertainties of Self-explaining Neural Networks via Conformal Prediction

Despite the recent progress in deep neural networks (DNNs), it remains challenging to explain the predictions made by DNNs. Existing explanation methods for DNNs mainly focus on post-hoc explanations where another explanatory model is employed to provide explanations. The fact that post-hoc methods can fail to reveal the actual original reasoning process of DNNs raises the need to build DNNs with built-in interpretability. Motivated by this, many self-explaining neural networks have been proposed to generate not only accurate predictions but also clear and intuitive insights into why a particular decision was made. However, existing self-explaining networks are limited in providing distribution-free uncertainty quantification for the two simultaneously generated prediction outcomes (i.e., a sample's final prediction and its corresponding explanations for interpreting that prediction). Importantly, they also fail to establish a connection between the confidence values assigned to the generated explanations in the interpretation layer and those allocated to the final predictions in the ultimate prediction layer. To tackle the aforementioned challenges, in this paper, we design a novel uncertainty modeling framework for self-explaining networks, which not only demonstrates strong distribution-free uncertainty modeling performance for the generated explanations in the interpretation layer but also excels in producing efficient and effective prediction sets for the final predictions based on the informative high-level basis explanations. We perform the theoretical analysis for the proposed framework. Extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed uncertainty framework.

Multiplayer Battle Game-Inspired Optimizer for Complex Optimization Problems

Various popular multiplayer battle royale games share a lot of common elements. Drawing from our observations, we summarized these shared characteristics and subsequently proposed a novel heuristic algorithm named multiplayer battle game-inspired optimizer (MBGO). The proposed MBGO streamlines mainstream multiplayer battle royale games into two discrete phases: movement and battle. Specifically, the movement phase incorporates the principles of commonly encountered ``safe zones'' to incentivize participants to relocate to areas with a higher survival potential. The battle phase simulates a range of strategies adopted by players in various situations to enhance the diversity of the population. To evaluate and analyze the performance of the proposed MBGO, we executed it alongside eight other algorithms, including three classics and five latest ones, across multiple diverse dimensions within the CEC2017 and CEC2020 benchmark functions. In addition, we employed several industrial design problems to evaluate the scalability and practicality of the proposed MBGO. The results of the statistical analysis reveal that the novel MBGO demonstrates significant competitiveness, excelling not only in convergence speed, but also in achieving high levels of convergence accuracy across both benchmark functions and real-world problems.
