Using Continuous Power Modulation for Exchanging Local Channel State Information

This letter provides a simple but efficient technique, which allows each transmitter of an interference network, to exchange local channel state information with the other transmitters. One salient feature of the proposed technique is that a transmitter only needs measurements of the signal power at its intended receiver to implement it, making direct inter-transmitter signaling channels unnecessary. The key idea to achieve this is to use a transient period during which the continuous power level of a transmitter is taken to be the linear combination of the channel gains to be exchanged.

Hard-Aware Deeply Cascaded Embedding

Riding on the waves of deep neural networks, deep metric learning has also achieved promising results in various tasks using triplet network or Siamese network. Though the basic goal of making images from the same category closer than the ones from different categories is intuitive, it is hard to directly optimize due to the quadratic or cubic sample size. To solve the problem, hard example mining which only focuses on a subset of samples that are considered hard is widely used. However, hard is defined relative to a model, where complex models treat most samples as easy ones and vice versa for simple models, and both are not good for training. Samples are also with different hard levels, it is hard to define a model with the just right complexity and choose hard examples adequately. This motivates us to ensemble a set of models with different complexities in cascaded manner and mine hard examples adaptively, a sample is judged by a series of models with increasing complexities and only updates models that consider the sample as a hard case. We evaluate our method on CARS196, CUB-200-2011, Stanford Online Products, VehicleID and DeepFashion datasets. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

Robust Spatial Filtering with Graph Convolutional Neural Networks

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have recently led to incredible breakthroughs on a variety of pattern recognition problems. Banks of finite impulse response filters are learned on a hierarchy of layers, each contributing more abstract information than the previous layer. The simplicity and elegance of the convolutional filtering process makes them perfect for structured problems such as image, video, or voice, where vertices are homogeneous in the sense of number, location, and strength of neighbors. The vast majority of classification problems, for example in the pharmaceutical, homeland security, and financial domains are unstructured. As these problems are formulated into unstructured graphs, the heterogeneity of these problems, such as number of vertices, number of connections per vertex, and edge strength, cannot be tackled with standard convolutional techniques. We propose a novel neural learning framework that is capable of handling both homogeneous and heterogeneous data, while retaining the benefits of traditional CNN successes. Recently, researchers have proposed variations of CNNs that can handle graph data. In an effort to create learnable filter banks of graphs, these methods either induce constraints on the data or require preprocessing. As opposed to spectral methods, our framework, which we term Graph-CNNs, defines filters as polynomials of functions of the graph adjacency matrix. Graph-CNNs can handle both heterogeneous and homogeneous graph data, including graphs having entirely different vertex or edge sets. We perform experiments to validate the applicability of Graph-CNNs to a variety of structured and unstructured classification problems and demonstrate state-of-the-art results on document and molecule classification problems.

A photonic quantum interface for hybrid quantum network

The hybrid quantum network, a universal form of quantum network which is aimed for quantum communication and distributed quantum computation, is that the quantum nodes in it are realized with different physical systems. This universal form of quantum network can combine the advantages and avoid the inherent defects of the different physical system. However, one obstacle standing in the way is the compatible photonic quantum interface. One possible solution is using non-degenerate, narrow-band, entangled photon pairs as the photonic interface. Here, for the first time, we generate nondegenrate narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pairs in cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. The bandwidths and central wavelengths of the signal and idler photons are 9 MHz at 935 nm and 9.5 MHz at 880 nm, which are compatible with trapped ion system and solid-state quantum memory system. The entanglement of the photon source is certified by quantum state tomography, showing a fidelity of 89.6% between the generated quantum state with a Bell state. Besides, a strong violation against Bell inequality with 2.36+/-0.03 further confirms the entanglement property of the photon pairs. Our method is suitable for the hybrid quantum network and will take a big step in this field.

Ekedahl-Oort strata for good reductions of Shimura varieties of Hodge type

For a Shimura variety of Hodge type with hyperspecial level structure at a prime $p$, Vasiu and Kisin constructed a smooth integral model (namely the integral canonical model) uniquely determined by a certain extension property. We define and study the Ekedahl-Oort stratifications on the special fibers of those integral canonical models when $p>2$. This generalizes Ekedahl-Oort stratifications defined and studied by Oort on moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and those defined and studied by Moonen, Wedhorn and Viehmann on good reductions of Shimura varieties of PEL type. We show that the Ekedahl-Oort strata are parameterized by certain elements $w$ in the Weyl group of the reductive group in the Shimura datum. We prove that the stratum corresponding to $w$ is smooth of dimension $l(w)$ (i.e. the length of $w$) if it is non-empty. We also determine the closure of each stratum.

Interference Coordination via Power Domain Channel Estimation

A novel technique is proposed which enables each transmitter to acquire global channel state information (CSI) from the sole knowledge of individual received signal power measurements, which makes dedicated feedback or inter-transmitter signaling channels unnecessary. To make this possible, we resort to a completely new technique whose key idea is to exploit the transmit power levels as symbols to embed information and the observed interference as a communication channel the transmitters can use to exchange coordination information. Although the used technique allows any kind of {low-rate} information to be exchanged among the transmitters, the focus here is to exchange local CSI. The proposed procedure also comprises a phase which allows local CSI to be estimated. Once an estimate of global CSI is acquired by the transmitters, it can be used to optimize any utility function which depends on it. While algorithms which use the same type of measurements such as the iterative water-filling algorithm (IWFA) implement the sequential best-response dynamics (BRD) applied to individual utilities, here, thanks to the availability of global CSI, the BRD can be applied to the sum-utility. Extensive numerical results show that significant gains can be obtained and, this, by requiring no additional online signaling.

Water-enhanced interdiffusion of major elements between natural shoshonite and high-K rhyolite melts

The interdiffusion of six major elements (Si, Ti, Fe, Mg, Ca, K) between natural shoshonite and a high-K calc-alkaline rhyolite (Vulcano island, Aeolian archipelago, Italy) has been experimentally measured by the diffusion couple technique at 1200°C, pressures from 50 to 500 MPa and water contents from 0.3 (nominally dry) to 2 wt%. The experiments were carried out in an internally heated pressure vessel, and major element profiles were later acquired by electron probe microanalysis. The concentration-distance profiles are evaluated using a concentration-dependent diffusivity approach. Effective binary diffusion coefficients for four intermediate silica contents are obtained by the Sauer-Freise modified Boltzmann-Matano method. At the experimental temperature and pressures, the diffusivity of all studied elements notably increases with dissolved H2O content. Particularly, diffusion is up to 1.4 orders of magnitude faster in a melt containing 2 wt.% H2O than in nominally dry melts. This effect is slightly enhanced in the more mafic compositions. Uphill diffusion was observed for Al, while all other elements can be described by the concept of effective binary interdiffusion. Ti is the slowest diffusing element through all experimental conditions and compositions, followed by Si. Fe, Mg, Ca and K diffuse at similar rates but always more rapidly than Si and Ti. This trend suggests a strong coupling between melt components. Since effects of composition (including water content) are dominant, a pressure effect on diffusion cannot be clearly resolved in the experimental pressure range.

Taking tomographic measurements for photonic qubits 88 ns before they are created

We experimentally demonstrate that tomographic measurements can be performed for states of qubits before they are prepared. A variant of the quantum teleportation protocol is used as a channel between two instants in time, allowing measurements for polarisation states of photons to be implemented 88 ns before they are created. Measurement data taken at the early time and later unscrambled according to the results of the protocol's Bell measurements, produces density matrices with an average fidelity of $0.90 \pm 0.01$ against the ideal states of photons created at the later time. Process tomography of the time-reverse quantum channel finds an average process fidelity of $0.84 \pm 0.02$. While our proof-of-principle implementation necessitates some post-selection, the general protocol is deterministic and requires no post-selection to sift desired states and reject a larger ensemble.

Feature Incay for Representation Regularization

Softmax loss is widely used in deep neural networks for multi-class classification, where each class is represented by a weight vector, a sample is represented as a feature vector, and the feature vector has the largest projection on the weight vector of the correct category when the model correctly classifies a sample. To ensure generalization, weight decay that shrinks the weight norm is often used as regularizer. Different from traditional learning algorithms where features are fixed and only weights are tunable, features are also tunable as representation learning in deep learning. Thus, we propose feature incay to also regularize representation learning, which favors feature vectors with large norm when the samples can be correctly classified. With the feature incay, feature vectors are further pushed away from the origin along the direction of their corresponding weight vectors, which achieves better inter-class separability. In addition, the proposed feature incay encourages intra-class compactness along the directions of weight vectors by increasing the small feature norm faster than the large ones. Empirical results on MNIST, CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 demonstrate feature incay can improve the generalization ability.

Brauer-Thrall type theorems for derived module categories

The numerical invariants (global) cohomological length, (global) cohomological width, and (global) cohomological range of complexes (algebras) are introduced. Cohomological range leads to the concepts of derived bounded algebras and strongly derived unbounded algebras naturally. The first and second Brauer-Thrall type theorems for the bounded derived category of a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field are obtained. The first Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that derived bounded algebras are just derived finite algebras. The second Brauer-Thrall type theorem says that an algebra is either derived discrete or strongly derived unbounded, but not both. Moreover, piecewise hereditary algebras and derived discrete algebras are characterized as the algebras of finite global cohomological width and finite global cohomological length respectively.

Detailed, accurate, human shape estimation from clothed 3D scan sequences

We address the problem of estimating human pose and body shape from 3D scans over time. Reliable estimation of 3D body shape is necessary for many applications including virtual try-on, health monitoring, and avatar creation for virtual reality. Scanning bodies in minimal clothing, however, presents a practical barrier to these applications. We address this problem by estimating body shape under clothing from a sequence of 3D scans. Previous methods that have exploited body models produce smooth shapes lacking personalized details. We contribute a new approach to recover a personalized shape of the person. The estimated shape deviates from a parametric model to fit the 3D scans. We demonstrate the method using high quality 4D data as well as sequences of visual hulls extracted from multi-view images. We also make available BUFF, a new 4D dataset that enables quantitative evaluation (http://buff.is.tue.mpg.de). Our method outperforms the state of the art in both pose estimation and shape estimation, qualitatively and quantitatively.

On the Deployment of Distributed Antennas for Wireless Power Transfer with Safety Electromagnetic Radiation Level Requirement

The extremely low efficiency is regarded as the bottleneck of Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology. To tackle this problem, either enlarging the transfer power or changing the infrastructure of WPT system could be an intuitively proposed way. However, the drastically important issue on the user exposure of electromagnetic radiation is rarely considered while we try to improve the efficiency of WPT. In this paper, a Distributed Antenna Power Beacon (DA-PB) based WPT system where these antennas are uniformly distributed on a circle is analyzed and optimized with the safety electromagnetic radiation level (SERL) requirement. In this model, three key questions are intended to be answered: 1) With the SERL, what is the performance of the harvested power at the users ? 2) How do we configure the parameters to maximize the efficiency of WPT? 3) Under the same constraints, does the DA-PB still have performance gain than the Co-located Antenna PB (CA-PB)? First, the minimum antenna height of DA-PB is derived to make the radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation power density at any location of the charging cell lower than the SERL published by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Second, the closed-form expressions of average harvested Direct Current (DC) power per user in the charging cell for pass-loss exponent 2 and 4 are also provided. In order to maximize the average efficiency of WPT, the optimal radii for distributed antennas elements (DAEs) are derived when the pass-loss exponent takes the typical value $2$ and $4$. For comparison, the CA-PB is also analyzed as a benchmark. Simulation results verify our derived theoretical results. And it is shown that the proposed DA-PB indeed achieves larger average harvested DC power than CA-PB and can improve the efficiency of WPT.

Generation and applications of an ultrahigh-fidelity four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state

High-quality entangled photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion have made great contributions to the modern quantum information science and the fundamental tests of quantum mechanics. However, the quality of the entangled states decreases sharply when moving from biphoton to multiphoton experiments, mainly due to the lack of interactions between photons. Here, for the first time, we generate a four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with a fidelity of $98\%$, which is even comparable to the best fidelity of biphoton entangled states. Thus, it enables us to demonstrate an ultrahigh-fidelity entanglement swapping---the key ingredient in various quantum information tasks. Our results push the fidelity of multiphoton entanglement generation to a new level and would be useful in some demanding tasks, e.g., we successfully demonstrate the genuine multipartite nonlocality of the observed state in the nonsignaling scenario by violating a novel Hardy-like inequality, which requires very high state-fidelity.

UDBMS: Road to Unification for Multi-model Data Management

A traditional database systems is organized around a single data model that determines how data can be organized, stored and manipulated. But the vision of this paper is to develop new principles and techniques to manage multiple data models against a single, integrated backend. For example, semi-structured, graph and relational models are examples of data models that may be supported by a new system. Having a single data platform for managing both well-structured data and NoSQL data is beneficial to users; this approach significantly reduces integration, migration, development, maintenance and operational issues. The problem is challenging: the existing database principles mainly work for a single model and the research on multi-model data management is still at an early stage. In this paper, we envision a UDBMS (Unified Database Management System) for multi-model data management in one platform. UDBMS will provide several new features such as unified data model and flexible schema, unified query processing, unified index structure and cross-model transaction guarantees. We discuss our vision as well as present multiple research challenges that we need to address.

Enhanced Superconductivity in TiO Epitaxial Thin Films

Titanium oxides have many fascinating optical and electrical properties, such as the superconductivity at 2.0 K in cubic titanium monoxide TiO polycrystalline bulk. However, the lack of TiO single crystals or epitaxial films has prevented systematic investigations on its superconductivity. Here, we report the basic superconductivity characterizations of cubic TiO films epitaxially grown on (0001)-oriented Al2O3 substrates. The magnetic and electronic transport measurements confirmed that TiO is a type-II superconductor and the record high Tc is about 7.4 K. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 1.9 K, the extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) and coherence length are about 18 Oe, 13.7 T and 4.9 nm, respectively. With increasing pressure, the value of Tc shifts to lower temperature while the normal state resistivity increases. Our results on the superconducting TiO films confirm the strategy to achieve higher Tc in epitaxial films, which may be helpful for finding more superconducting materials in various related systems.
