Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Results of Dark Matter Search using the Full PandaX-II Exposure

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

Stark many-body localization on a superconducting quantum processor

Quantum emulators, owing to their large degree of tunability and control, allow the observation of fine aspects of closed quantum many-body systems, as either the regime where thermalization takes place or when it is halted by the presence of disorder. The latter, dubbed many-body localization (MBL) phenomenon, describes the non-ergodic behavior that is dynamically identified by the preservation of local information and slow entanglement growth. Here, we provide a precise observation of this same phenomenology in the case the onsite energy landscape is not disordered, but rather linearly varied, emulating the Stark MBL. To this end, we construct a quantum device composed of thirty-two superconducting qubits, faithfully reproducing the relaxation dynamics of a non-integrable spin model. Our results describe the real-time evolution at sizes that surpass what is currently attainable by exact simulations in classical computers, signaling the onset of quantum advantage, thus bridging the way for quantum computation as a resource for solving out-of-equilibrium many-body problems.

Asymmetry Helps: Eigenvalue and Eigenvector Analyses of Asymmetrically Perturbed Low-Rank Matrices

This paper is concerned with the interplay between statistical asymmetry and spectral methods. Suppose we are interested in estimating a rank-1 and symmetric matrix $\mathbf{M}^{\star}\in \mathbb{R}^{n\times n}$, yet only a randomly perturbed version $\mathbf{M}$ is observed. The noise matrix $\mathbf{M}-\mathbf{M}^{\star}$ is composed of zero-mean independent (but not necessarily homoscedastic) entries and is, therefore, not symmetric in general. This might arise, for example, when we have two independent samples for each entry of $\mathbf{M}^{\star}$ and arrange them into an {\em asymmetric} data matrix $\mathbf{M}$. The aim is to estimate the leading eigenvalue and eigenvector of $\mathbf{M}^{\star}$. We demonstrate that the leading eigenvalue of the data matrix $\mathbf{M}$ can be $O(\sqrt{n})$ times more accurate --- up to some log factor --- than its (unadjusted) leading singular value in eigenvalue estimation. Further, the perturbation of any linear form of the leading eigenvector of $\mathbf{M}$ --- say, entrywise eigenvector perturbation --- is provably well-controlled. This eigen-decomposition approach is fully adaptive to heteroscedasticity of noise without the need of careful bias correction or any prior knowledge about the noise variance. We also provide partial theory for the more general rank-$r$ case. The takeaway message is this: arranging the data samples in an asymmetric manner and performing eigen-decomposition could sometimes be beneficial.

Observation of energy resolved many-body localization

Many-body localization (MBL) describes a quantum phase where an isolated interacting system subject to sufficient disorder displays non-ergodic behavior, evading thermal equilibrium that occurs under its own dynamics. Previously, the thermalization-MBL transition has been largely characterized with the growth of disorder. Here, we explore a new axis, reporting on an energy resolved MBL transition using a 19-qubit programmable superconducting processor, which enables precise control and flexibility of both disorder strength and initial state preparations. We observe that the onset of localization occurs at different disorder strengths, with distinguishable energy scales, by measuring time-evolved observables and many-body wavefunctions related quantities. Our results open avenues for the experimental exploration of many-body mobility edges in MBL systems, whose existence is widely debated due to system size finiteness, and where exact simulations in classical computers become unfeasible.

Precise Photon Correlation Measurement of a Chaotic Laser

The second order photon correlation g^(2)(tau) of a chaotic optical-feedback semiconductor laser is precisely measured using a Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometer. The accurate g^(2)(tau) with non-zero delay time is obtained experimentally from the photon pair time interval distribution through a ninth-order self-convolution correction. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis. The relative error of g^(2)(tau) is no more than 0.005 within 50 ns delay time. The bunching effect and coherence time of the chaotic laser are measured via the precise photon correlation technique. This technique provides a new tool to improve the accuracy of g^(2)(tau) measurement and boost applications of quantum statistics and correlation.

Parallel real-time quantum random number generator

Quantum random number generation exploits inherent randomness of quantum mechanical processes and measurements. Real-time generation rate of quantum random numbers is usually limited by electronic bandwidth and data processing rates. Here we use a multiplexing scheme to create a fast real-time quantum random number generator based on continuous variable vacuum fluctuations. Multiple sideband frequency modes of a quantum vacuum state within a homodyne detection bandwidth are concurrently extracted as the randomness source. Parallel post-processing of raw data from three sub-entropy sources is realized in one field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based on Toeplitz-hashing extractors. A cumulative generation rate of 8.25 Gbps in real-time is achieved. The system relies on optoelectronic components and circuits that could be integrated in a compact, economical package.

Investigating many-body mobility edges in isolated quantum systems

The existence of many-body mobility edges in closed quantum systems has been the focus of intense debate after the emergence of the description of the many-body localization phenomenon. Here we propose that this issue can be settled in experiments by investigating the time evolution of local degrees of freedom, tailored for specific energies and initial states. An interacting model of spinless fermions with exponentially long-ranged tunneling amplitudes, whose non-interacting version known to display single-particle mobility edges, is used as the starting point upon which nearest-neighbor interactions are included. We verify the manifestation of many-body mobility edges by using numerous probes, suggesting that one cannot explain their appearance as merely being a result of finite-size effects.

Singlet pairing and superconductivity in t-J ladders with Mott insulating stripes

Pairing in superconductors occurs in a variety of channels and can be produced by various mechanisms. Here, we show that, in the presence of strong correlations, a novel singlet-pair superconducting phase can occur in ladder geometries with the fermions in the pairs residing on different sides of a Mott insulating stripe. The antiferromagnet correlations in the Mott stripe provide the pairing "glue" in such a phase. We study, using the density matrix renormalization group method, the ground state of four-leg t-J ladders with Mott insulating stripes in the inner two legs. Pairing and superconductivity are revealed by the presence of negative binding energies and by algebraically decaying interleg singlet-pair correlations, respectively.

Enhancing quantum entropy in vacuum-based quantum random number generator

Information-theoretically provable unique true random numbers, which cannot be correlated or controlled by an attacker, can be generated based on quantum measurement of vacuum state and universal-hashing randomness extraction. Quantum entropy in the measurements decides the quality and security of the random number generator. At the same time, it directly determine the extraction ratio of true randomness from the raw data, in other words, it affects quantum random numbers generating rate obviously. In this work, considering the effects of classical noise, the best way to enhance quantum entropy in the vacuum-based quantum random number generator is explored in the optimum dynamical analog-digital converter (ADC) range scenario. The influence of classical noise excursion, which may be intrinsic to a system or deliberately induced by an eavesdropper, on the quantum entropy is derived. We propose enhancing local oscillator intensity rather than electrical gain for noise-independent amplification of quadrature fluctuation of vacuum state. Abundant quantum entropy is extractable from the raw data even when classical noise excursion is large. Experimentally, an extraction ratio of true randomness of 85.3% is achieved by finite enhancement of the local oscillator power when classical noise excursions of the raw data is obvious.

Giant Magnetoresistance in Hubbard Chains

We use numerically unbiased methods to show that the one-dimensional Hubbard model with periodically distributed on-site interactions already contains the minimal ingredients to display the phenomenon of magnetoresistance; i.e., by applying an external magnetic field, a dramatic enhancement on the charge transport is achieved. We reach this conclusion based on the computation of the Drude weight and of the single-particle density of states, applying twisted boundary condition averaging to reduce finite-size effects. The known picture that describes the giant magnetoresistance, by interpreting the scattering amplitudes of parallel or antiparallel polarized currents with local magnetizations, is obtained without having to resort to different entities; itinerant and localized charges are indistinguishable.

Magnetization jump in one dimensional $J-Q_{2}$ model with anisotropic exchange

We investigate the adiabatic magnetization process of the one-dimensional $J-Q_{2}$ model with XXZ anisotropy $g$ in an external magnetic field $h$ by using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. According to the characteristic of the magnetization curves, we draw a magnetization phase diagram consisting of four phases. For a fixed nonzero pair coupling $Q$, i) when $g<-1$, the ground state is always ferromagnetic in spite of $h$; ii) when $g>-1$ but still small, the whole magnetization curve is continuous and smooth; iii) if further increasing $g$, there is a macroscopic magnetization jump from partially- to fully-polarized state; iv) for a sufficiently large $g$, the magnetization jump is from non- to fully-polarized state. By examining the energy per magnon and the correlation function, we find that the origin of the magnetization jump is the condensation of magnons and the formation of magnetic domains. We also demonstrate that while the experienced states are Heisenberg-like without long-range order, all the \textit{jumped-over} states have antiferromagnetic or Néel long-range orders, or their mixing.

The production of neutral $N^*(11052)$ resonance with hidden beauty from $π^-p$ scattering

We investigate the discovery potential of the predicted neutral hidden beauty $N^*(11052)$ resonance through $π^- p$ scattering within an effective Lagrangian approach. Two reactions $π^-p\rightarrow K^-Σ^+$ and $π^-p\rightarrow η_bn$ are studied in this work, with nucleon pole exchange as the background. It is found that the contributions of the $N^*(11052)$ resonance give clear peak structures in the magnitude of 1 $μb$ near the threshold of the $N^*(11052)$ in the total cross sections. The numerical results indicate that the center of mass energy $W\simeq$ 11-11.1 GeV would be a best energy window for searching the $N^*(11052)$ resonance, where the $N^*(11052)$ signal can be easily distinguished from the background. The COMPASS experiment at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) with pion beam of $\simeq$ 280 GeV will be an ideal platform for searching the super-heavy resonance with hidden beauty, which is hopeful to test the theoretical results.

Many-body delocalization with random vector potentials

We study the ergodic properties of excited states in a model of interacting fermions in quasi-one-dimensional chains subjected to a random vector potential. In the noninteracting limit, we show that arbitrarily small values of this complex off-diagonal disorder trigger localization for the whole spectrum; the divergence of the localization length in the single-particle basis is characterized by a critical exponent $ν$ which depends on the energy density being investigated. When short-range interactions are included, the localization is lost, and the system is ergodic regardless of the magnitude of disorder in finite chains. Our numerical results suggest a delocalization scheme for arbitrary small values of interactions. This finding indicates that the standard scenario of the many-body localization cannot be obtained in a model with random gauge fields.

The role of $a_1(1260)$ in $π^- p \to a^-_1(1260) p$ and $π^- p \to π^- ρ^0 p$ reactions near threshold

We report on a theoretical study of the $π^- p \to a^-_1(1260) p$ and $π^- p \to π^- ρ^0 p$ reactions near threshold within an effective Lagrangian approach. The production process is described by $t$-channel $ρ^0$ meson exchange. For the $π^- p \to π^- ρ^0 p$ reaction, the final $π^- ρ^0$ results from the decay of the $a_1(1260)$ resonance which is assumed as a dynamically generated state from the $K^* \bar K$ and $ρπ$ coupled channel interactions. We calculate the total cross section of the $π^- p \to a^-_1(1260) p$ reaction. It is shown that, with the coupling constant of the $a_1(1260)$ to $ρπ$ channel obtained from the chiral unitary theory and a cut off parameter $Λ_ρ\sim 1.5$ GeV in the form factors, the experimental measurement can be reproduced. Furthermore, the total and differential cross sections of $π^- p \to a^-_1(1260) p \to π^- ρ^0 p$ reaction are evaluated, and it is expected that our model calculations can be tested by future experiments. These reactions are important for the study of the $a_1(1260)$ resonance and would provide further clue for the nature of $a_1(1260)$ state.

Phase diagram and topological superfluid state of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Based on density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice and present a complete phase diagram for a quarter-filling system with intermediate strong interactions. We unveil the exotic pairings induced by spin-orbit couplings and the phase transitions between different pairing states, and further demonstrate the existence of the long-sought topological superfluid state at moderate magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. For the particle conserved system, this topological superfluid state can be fixed by its gapless single particle excitation, Luttinger parameter and non-trivial boundary effect. Our study removes out the widespread doubt on the existence of topological superfluid in one dimension and paves the way for simulating topological superfluid states in cold atom settings.

Topological incommensurate magnetization plateaus in quasi-periodic quantum spin chains

Uncovering topologically nontrivial states in nature is an intriguing and important issue in recent years. While most studies are based on the topological band insulators, the topological state in strongly correlated low-dimensional systems has not been extensively explored due to the failure of direct explanation from the topological band insulator theory on such systems and the origin of the topological property is unclear. Here we report the theoretical discovery of strongly correlated topological states in quasi-periodic Heisenberg spin chain systems corresponding to a series of incommensurate magnetization plateaus under the presence of the magnetic field, which are uniquely determined by the quasi-periodic structure of exchange couplings. The topological features of plateau states are demonstrated by the existence of non-trivial spin-flip edge excitations, which can be well characterized by nonzero topological invariants defined in a two-dimensional parameter space. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological invariant of the plateau state can be read out from a generalized Streda formula and the spin-flip excitation spectrum exhibits a similar structure of the Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum for the two-dimensional quantum Hall system on a lattice.

Topological nature of magnetization plateaus in periodically modulated quantum spin chains

We unveil nontrivial topological properties of zero-temperature magnetization plateau states in periodically modulated quantum spin chains under a uniform magnetic field. As positions of plateaus are uniquely determined by the modulation period of exchange couplings, we find that the topologically nontrivial plateau state can be characterized by a nonzero integer Chern number and has nontrivial edge excitations. Our study clarifies the topological origin of the well-known phenomena of quantized magnetization plateaus in one-dimensional quantum spin systems and relates the plateau state to the correlated topological insulator.
