Heterogeneous Optically-Detected Spin-Acoustic Resonance in Solid-State Molecular Thin-film

We report an implementation of spin-acoustic resonance in pentacene thin films integrated on a high-quality-factor (high-Q) surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator on a lithium niobate substrate. Heterogeneous optically detected spin-acoustic resonance (HODSAR) is an optically detected spin-resonance measurement in which the resonant drive is delivered mechanically by a surface acoustic wave (SAW). By leveraging the photo-excited triplet state of pentacene at room temperature, we demonstrate coherent spin manipulation via acoustic driving under zero externally applied magnetic field. The heterogeneously integrated device, referred to as HODSAR, utilizes spin-phonon coupling to achieve mechanically driven, zero-field spin resonance, opening avenues for room-temperature mechanically addressable spin control and device integration. We show that the high-Q multimode response of the SAW resonator enables spectrally selective acoustic addressing of triplet transitions near 105 MHz. Coherent control is evidenced by Rabi oscillations, with a Rabi frequency that increases linearly with the square root of the applied RF input power over the measured drive range, consistent with driven two-level dynamics under acoustic excitation. These results establish spin-acoustic resonance in a heterogeneously integrated molecular thin-film platform and provide a quantitative basis for benchmarking mechanically mediated spin control.

Synergizing Deconfounding and Temporal Generalization For Time-series Counterfactual Outcome Estimation

Estimating counterfactual outcomes from time-series observations is crucial for effective decision-making, e.g. when to administer a life-saving treatment, yet remains significantly challenging because (i) the counterfactual trajectory is never observed and (ii) confounders evolve with time and distort estimation at every step. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework that synergistically integrates two complementary approaches: Sub-treatment Group Alignment (SGA) and Random Temporal Masking (RTM). Instead of the coarse practice of aligning marginal distributions of the treatments in latent space, SGA uses iterative treatment-agnostic clustering to identify fine-grained sub-treatment groups. Aligning these fine-grained groups achieves improved distributional matching, thus leading to more effective deconfounding. We theoretically demonstrate that SGA optimizes a tighter upper bound on counterfactual risk and empirically verify its deconfounding efficacy. RTM promotes temporal generalization by randomly replacing input covariates with Gaussian noises during training. This encourages the model to rely less on potentially noisy or spuriously correlated covariates at the current step and more on stable historical patterns, thereby improving its ability to generalize across time and better preserve underlying causal relationships. Our experiments demonstrate that while applying SGA and RTM individually improves counterfactual outcome estimation, their synergistic combination consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance. This success comes from their distinct yet complementary roles: RTM enhances temporal generalization and robustness across time steps, while SGA improves deconfounding at each specific time point.

Environment-Dependent Components Identification of Behind-the-Meter Resources via Inverse Optimization

With the increasing penetration of behind-the-meter (BTM) resources, it is vital to monitor the components of these resources and deduce their response behavior to external environment. Owing to data privacy, however, the appliance-wise measurement is invisible to the power system operator, which hinders the accurate modeling of load identification. To this end, this paper proposes a hybrid physics-inspired and data-driven framework for decomposing BTM components based on external measurement of total load and environmental factors. The total load is decomposed into different environment-dependent components, namely storage-like component, PV generation component, thermostatically-controlled load component, and periodic component. The overall load identification adopts a double-layer iterative solution framework. A data-driven inverse optimization algorithm is developed to identify parameters of the energy storage-like component. The physics-inspired model is proposed to identify the capacity and response of the rest components. The modeling accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are validated by numerical tests. The application significance of the proposed BTM identification method is also validated in electricity market clearing for reducing system operation costs.

Ads Supply Personalization via Doubly Robust Learning

Ads supply personalization aims to balance the revenue and user engagement, two long-term objectives in social media ads, by tailoring the ad quantity and density. In the industry-scale system, the challenge for ads supply lies in modeling the counterfactual effects of a conservative supply treatment (e.g., a small density change) over an extended duration. In this paper, we present a streamlined framework for personalized ad supply. This framework optimally utilizes information from data collection policies through the doubly robust learning. Consequently, it significantly improves the accuracy of long-term treatment effect estimates. Additionally, its low-complexity design not only results in computational cost savings compared to existing methods, but also makes it scalable for billion-scale applications. Through both offline experiments and online production tests, the framework consistently demonstrated significant improvements in top-line business metrics over months. The framework has been fully deployed to live traffic in one of the world's largest social media platforms.

Alterations of electrocortical activity during hand movements induced by motor cortex glioma

Glioma cells can reshape functional neuronal networks by hijacking neuronal synapses, leading to partial or complete neurological dysfunction. These mechanisms have been previously explored for language functions. However, the impact of glioma on sensorimotor functions is still unknown. Therefore, we recruited a control group of patients with unaffected motor cortex and a group of patients with glioma-infiltrated motor cortex, and recorded high-density electrocortical signals during finger movement tasks. The results showed that glioma suppresses task-related synchronization in the high-gamma band and reduces the power across all frequency bands. The resulting atypical motor information transmission model with discrete signaling pathways and delayed responses disrupts the stability of neuronal encoding patterns for finger movement kinematics across various temporal-spatial scales. These findings demonstrate that gliomas functionally invade neural circuits within the motor cortex. This result advances our understanding of motor function processing in chronic disease states, which is important to advance the surgical strategies and neurorehabilitation approaches for patients with malignant gliomas.

Enhanced piezoelectric response of AlN via alloying of transitional metals, and influence of type and distribution of transition metals

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an important piezoelectric material for a wide range of applications, many efforts are devoted to improving its piezoelectric response by alloying with transition metals (TMs). In this paper, the influence of the type and distribution of TM on the piezoelectric response is discussed for the first time. TM0.0625Al0.9375N with twenty-eight different TMs are investigated, and most show higher values of piezoelectric strain modulus d33 than that of AlN. This is because the TM introduces weaker TM-N bonds and locates closer to the centre of three neighbouring N atoms. The location of TM is determined to be significantly correlated with its group number. Alloys of TMxAl1-xN (TM=Sc, Cr, Sr, Mo, Ru and Rh) with varying x are further studied. On basis of the cost of the TMs and piezoelectric performances, the alloy with Mo is more effective in enhancing d33. A high d33 of 12.3 times that of pure AlN is realized in a metastable configuration of Mo0.167Al0.833N. The distribution of Mo plays a key role in the piezoelectric performance. A higher d33 is more likely to appear in MoxAl1-xN with more Al sublayers containing Mo atoms and with fewer dimers of Mo atoms along the z-axis.

Real-time FPGA Design for OMP Targeting 8K Image Reconstruction

During the past decade, implementing reconstruction algorithms on hardware has been at the center of much attention in the field of real-time reconstruction in Compressed Sensing (CS). Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) is the most widely used reconstruction algorithm on hardware implementation because OMP obtains good quality reconstruction results under a proper time cost. OMP includes Dot Product (DP) and Least Square Problem (LSP). These two parts have numerous division calculations and considerable vector-based multiplications, which limit the implementation of real-time reconstruction on hardware. In the theory of CS, besides the reconstruction algorithm, the choice of sensing matrix affects the quality of reconstruction. It also influences the reconstruction efficiency by affecting the hardware architecture. Thus, designing a real-time hardware architecture of OMP needs to take three factors into consideration. The choice of sensing matrix, the implementation of DP and LSP. In this paper, a sensing matrix, which is sparsity and contains zero vectors mainly, is adopted to optimize the OMP reconstruction to break the bottleneck of reconstruction efficiency. Based on the features of the chosen matrix, the DP and LSP are implemented by simple shift, add and comparing procedures. This work is implemented on the Xilinx Virtex UltraScale+ FPGA device. To reconstruct a digital signal with 1024 length under 0.25 sampling rate, the proposal method costs 0.818us while the state-of-the-art costs 238$us. Thus, this work speedups the state-of-the-art method 290 times. This work costs 0.026s to reconstruct an 8K gray image, which achieves 30FPS real-time reconstruction.

Depth Completion via Inductive Fusion of Planar LIDAR and Monocular Camera

Modern high-definition LIDAR is expensive for commercial autonomous driving vehicles and small indoor robots. An affordable solution to this problem is fusion of planar LIDAR with RGB images to provide a similar level of perception capability. Even though state-of-the-art methods provide approaches to predict depth information from limited sensor input, they are usually a simple concatenation of sparse LIDAR features and dense RGB features through an end-to-end fusion architecture. In this paper, we introduce an inductive late-fusion block which better fuses different sensor modalities inspired by a probability model. The proposed demonstration and aggregation network propagates the mixed context and depth features to the prediction network and serves as a prior knowledge of the depth completion. This late-fusion block uses the dense context features to guide the depth prediction based on demonstrations by sparse depth features. In addition to evaluating the proposed method on benchmark depth completion datasets including NYUDepthV2 and KITTI, we also test the proposed method on a simulated planar LIDAR dataset. Our method shows promising results compared to previous approaches on both the benchmark datasets and simulated dataset with various 3D densities.

F2GAN: Fusing-and-Filling GAN for Few-shot Image Generation

In order to generate images for a given category, existing deep generative models generally rely on abundant training images. However, extensive data acquisition is expensive and fast learning ability from limited data is necessarily required in real-world applications. Also, these existing methods are not well-suited for fast adaptation to a new category. Few-shot image generation, aiming to generate images from only a few images for a new category, has attracted some research interest. In this paper, we propose a Fusing-and-Filling Generative Adversarial Network (F2GAN) to generate realistic and diverse images for a new category with only a few images. In our F2GAN, a fusion generator is designed to fuse the high-level features of conditional images with random interpolation coefficients, and then fills in attended low-level details with non-local attention module to produce a new image. Moreover, our discriminator can ensure the diversity of generated images by a mode seeking loss and an interpolation regression loss. Extensive experiments on five datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method for few-shot image generation.

The impacts of optimization algorithm and basis size on the accuracy and efficiency of variational quantum eigensolver

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is demonstrated to be the promising methodology for quantum chemistry based on near-term quantum devices. However, many problems are yet to be investigated for this methodology, such as the influences of optimization algorithm and basis size on the accuracy and efficiency for quantum computing. To address these issues, five molecules (H2, LiH, HF, N2 and F2) are studied in this work based on the VQE method using unitary coupled cluster (UCC) ansatz. The performance of the gradient optimization L-BFGS-B is compared with that of the direct search method COBYLA. The former converges more quickly, but the accuracy of energy surface is a little lower. The basis set shows a vital influence on the accuracy and efficiency. A large basis set generally provides an accurate energy surface, but induces a significant increase in computing time. The 631g basis is generally required from the energy surface of the simplest H2 molecule. For practical applications of VQE, complete active space (CAS) is suggested based on limited quantum resources. With the same number of qubits, more occupied orbitals included in CAS gives a better accuracy for the energy surface and a smaller evaluation number in the VQE optimization. Additionally, the electronic structure, such as filling fraction of orbitals, the bond strength of a molecule and the maximum nuclear charge also influences the performance of optimization, where half occupation of orbitals generally requires a large computation cost.

Low-cost LIDAR based Vehicle Pose Estimation and Tracking

Detecting surrounding vehicles by low-cost LIDAR has been drawing enormous attention. In low-cost LIDAR, vehicles present a multi-layer L-Shape. Based on our previous optimization/criteria-based L-Shape fitting algorithm, we here propose a data-driven and model-based method for robust vehicle segmentation and tracking. The new method uses T-linkage RANSAC to take a limited amount of noisy data and performs a robust segmentation for a moving car against noise. Compared with our previous method, T-Linkage RANSAC is more tolerant of observation uncertainties, i.e., the number of sides of the target being observed, and gets rid of the L-Shape assumption. In addition, a vehicle tracking system with Multi-Model Association (MMA) is built upon the segmentation result, which provides smooth trajectories of tracked objects. A manually labeled dataset from low-cost multi-layer LIDARs for validation will also be released with the paper. Experiments on the dataset show that the new approach outperforms previous ones based on multiple criteria. The new algorithm can also run in real-time.

Identification and classification of TCM syndrome types among patients with vascular mild cognitive impairment using latent tree analysis

Objective: To treat patients with vascular mild cognitive impairment (VMCI) using TCM, it is necessary to classify the patients into TCM syndrome types and to apply different treatments to different types. We investigate how to properly carry out the classification using a novel data-driven method known as latent tree analysis. Method: A cross-sectional survey on VMCI was carried out in several regions in northern China from 2008 to 2011, which resulted in a data set that involves 803 patients and 93 symptoms. Latent tree analysis was performed on the data to reveal symptom co-occurrence patterns, and the patients were partitioned into clusters in multiple ways based on the patterns. The patient clusters were matched up with syndrome types, and population statistics of the clusters are used to quantify the syndrome types and to establish classification rules. Results: Eight syndrome types are identified: Qi Deficiency, Qi Stagnation, Blood Deficiency, Blood Stasis, Phlegm-Dampness, Fire-Heat, Yang Deficiency, and Yin Deficiency. The prevalence and symptom occurrence characteristics of each syndrome type are determined. Quantitative classification rules are established for determining whether a patient belongs to each of the syndrome types. Conclusions: A solution for the TCM syndrome classification problem associated with VMCI is established based on the latent tree analysis of unlabeled symptom survey data. The results can be used as a reference in clinic practice to improve the quality of syndrome differentiation and to reduce diagnosis variances across physicians. They can also be used for patient selection in research projects aimed at finding biomarkers for the syndrome types and in randomized control trials aimed at determining the efficacy of TCM treatments of VMCI.

A data-driven method for syndrome type identification and classification in traditional Chinese medicine

Objective: The efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments for Western medicine (WM) diseases relies heavily on the proper classification of patients into TCM syndrome types. We develop a data-driven method for solving the classification problem, where syndrome types are identified and quantified based on patterns detected in unlabeled symptom survey data. Method: Latent class analysis (LCA) has been applied in WM research to solve a similar problem, i.e., to identify subtypes of a patient population in the absence of a gold standard. A widely known weakness of LCA is that it makes an unrealistically strong independence assumption. We relax the assumption by first detecting symptom co-occurrence patterns from survey data and use those patterns instead of the symptoms as features for LCA. Results: The result of the investigation is a six-step method: Data collection, symptom co-occurrence pattern discovery, pattern interpretation, syndrome identification, syndrome type identification, and syndrome type classification. A software package called Lantern is developed to support the application of the method. The method is illustrated using a data set on Vascular Mild Cognitive Impairment (VMCI). Conclusions: A data-driven method for TCM syndrome identification and classification is presented. The method can be used to answer the following questions about a Western medicine disease: What TCM syndrome types are there among the patients with the disease? What is the prevalence of each syndrome type? What are the statistical characteristics of each syndrome type in terms of occurrence of symptoms? How can we determine the syndrome type(s) of a patient?
