One-sided Precoder Designs on Manifolds for Interference Alignment

Interference alignment (IA) is a technique recently shown to achieve the maximum degrees of freedom (DoF) of $K$-user interference channel. In this paper, we focus on the precoder designs on manifolds for IA. By restricting the optimization only at the transmitters' side, it will alleviate the overhead induced by alternation between the forward and reverse links significantly. Firstly a classical steepest descent (SD) algorithm in multi-dimensional complex space is proposed to achieve feasible IA. Then we reform the optimization problem on Stiefel manifold, and propose a novel SD algorithm based on this manifold with lower dimensions. Moreover, aiming at further reducing the complexity, Grassmann manifold is introduced to derive corresponding algorithm for reaching the perfect IA. Numerical simulations show that the proposed algorithms on manifolds have better convergence performance and higher system capacity than previous methods, also achieve the maximum DoF.

Few-body ultracold reactions in a Bose-Fermi mixture

The spectrum of two bosons and two fermions in a trap is calculated using a correlated-Gaussian basis throughout the range of a broad Fano-Feshbach resonance. The calculations provide a few-body solution to the magneto-association of fermionic Feshbach molecules. This solution is used to study the time evolution of the system as the scattering length changes, mimicking experiments with Bose-Fermi mixtures near Fano-Feshbach resonances. The structure of avoided crossings in the few-body spectrum enables an interpretation of the dynamics of the system as a sequence of Landau-Zener transitions. The calculated molecule formation rate is compared with experimental observations.

A sol-gel method for growing superconducting MgB2 films

In this paper we report a new sol-gel method for the fabrication of MgB2 films. Polycrystalline MgB2 films were prepared by spin-coating a precursor solution of Mg(BH_4)_2 diethyl ether on (001)Al2O3 substrates followed with annealing in Mg vapor. In comparison with the MgB2 films grown by other techniques, our films show medium qualities including a superconducting transition temperature of Tc ~ 37 K, a critical current density of Jc(5 K, 0 T) ~ 5 {\times} 10^6 A cm^{-2}, and a critical field of H_{c2}(0) ~ 19 T. Such a sol-gel technique shows potential in the commercial fabrication of practically used MgB2 films as well as MgB2 wires and tapes.

A Super-high Angular Resolution Principle for Coded-mask X-ray Imaging Beyond the Diffraction Limit of Single Pinhole

High angular resolution X-ray imaging is always demanded by astrophysics and solar physics, which can be realized by coded-mask imaging with very long mask-detector distance in principle. Previously the diffraction-interference effect has been thought to degrade coded-mask imaging performance dramatically at low energy end with very long mask-detector distance. In this work the diffraction-interference effect is described with numerical calculations, and the diffraction-interference cross correlation reconstruction method (DICC) is developed in order to overcome the imaging performance degradation. Based on the DICC, a super-high angular resolution principle (SHARP) for coded-mask X-ray imaging is proposed. The feasibility of coded mask imaging beyond the diffraction limit of single pinhole is demonstrated with simulations. With the specification that the mask element size of 50* 50 square micrometers and the mask-detector distance of 50 m, the achieved angular resolution is 0.32 arcsec above about 10 keV, and 0.36 arcsec at 1.24 keV where diffraction can not be neglected. The on-axis source location accuracy is better than 0.02 arcsec. Potential applications for solar observations and wide-field X-ray monitors are also shortly discussed.

Localization in Wireless Sensor Grids

This work reports experiences on using radio ranging to position sensors in a grid topology. The implementation is simple, efficient, and could be practically distributed. The paper describes an implementation and experimental result based on RSSI distance estimation. Novel techniques such as fuzzy membership functions and table lookup are used to obtain more accurate result and simplify the computation. An 86% accuracy is achieved in the experiment in spite of inaccurate RSSI distance estimates with errors up to 60%.
