Random Sampling of Bandlimited Graph Signals from Local Measurements

The random sampling on graph signals is one of the fundamental topics in graph signal processing. In this letter, we consider the random sampling of k-bandlimited signals from the local measurements and show that no more than O(klogk) measurements with replacement are sufficient for the accurate and stable recovery of any k-bandlimited graph signals. We propose two random sampling strategies based on the minimum measurements, i.e., the optimal sampling and the estimated sampling. The geodesic distance between vertices is introduced to design the sampling probability distribution. Numerical experiments are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

MAGNIF: A Tentative Lensed Rotating Disk at $z=8.34$ detected by JWST NIRCam WFSS with Dynamical Forward Modeling

We report galaxy MACS0416-Y3 behind the lensing cluster MACSJ0416.1--2403 as a tentative rotating disk at $z=8.34$ detected through its [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission in JWST NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopic observations. The discovery is based on our new grism dynamical modeling methodology for JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy, using the data from ``Median-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam in Frontier Fields'' (MAGNIF), a JWST Cycle-2 program. The [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line morphology in grism data shows velocity offsets compared to the F480M direct imaging, suggestive of rotation. Assuming a geometrically thin disk model, we constrain the rotation velocity of $v_{\rm rot}=58^{+53}_{-35}$ km s$^{-1}$ via forward modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum. We obtain the kinematic ratio of $v_{\rm rot}/σ_v=1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.9}$, where $σ_v$ is the velocity dispersion, in line with a quasi-stable thin disk. The resulting dynamical mass is estimated to be $\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=8.4^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$. If the rotation confirmed, our discovery suggests that rotating gaseous disks may have already existed within 600 million years after Big Bang.

JWST's PEARLS: Transients in the MACS J0416.1-2403 Field

With its unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has opened a new window for time-domain discoveries in the infrared. Here we report observations in the only field that has received four epochs (spanning 126 days) of JWST NIRCam observations in Cycle 1. This field is towards MACS J0416.1-2403, which is a rich galaxy cluster at redshift z=0.4 and is one of the Hubble Frontier Fields. We have discovered 14 transients from these data. Twelve of these transients happened in three galaxies (with z=0.94, 1.01, and 2.091) crossing a lensing caustic of the cluster, and these transients are highly magnified by gravitational lensing. These 12 transients are likely of similar nature to those previously reported based on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data in this field, i.e., individual stars in the highly magnified arcs. However, these twelve could not have been found by HST because they are too red and too faint. The other two transients are associated with background galaxies (z=2.205 and 0.7093) that are only moderately magnified, and they are likely supernovae. They indicate a de-magnified supernova surface density, when monitored at a time cadence of a few months to a ~3--4 micron survey limit of AB ~ 28.5 mag, of ~0.5 per sq. arcmin integrated to z ~ 2. This survey depth is beyond the capability of HST but can be easily reached by JWST.

The Dispersion Measure Contributions of the Cosmic Web

The large-scale distribution of baryons is sensitive to gravitational collapse, mergers, and galactic feedback. Known as the Cosmic Web, its large-scale structure (LSS) can be classified as halos, filaments, and voids. Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are extragalactic sources that undergo dispersion along their propagation paths. They provide insight into ionised matter along their sightlines via their dispersion measures (DMs), and have been investigated as probes of the LSS baryon fraction, the diffuse baryon distribution, and of cosmological parameters. We use the cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG to study FRB DMs accumulated while traversing different types of LSS. We combine methods for deriving electron density, classifying LSS, and tracing FRB sightlines. We identify halos, filaments, voids, and collapsed structures along random sightlines and calculate their DM contributions. We analyse the redshift-evolving cosmological DM components of the Cosmic Web. We find that the filamentary contribution dominates, increasing from ~71% to ~80% on average for FRBs originating at z=0.1 vs z=5, while the halo contribution falls, and the void contribution remains consistent to within ~1%. The majority of DM variance originates from halos and filaments, potentially making void-only sightlines more precise probes of cosmological parameters. We find that, on average, an FRB originating at z=1 will intersect ~1.8 foreground collapsed structures, increasing to ~12.4 structures for a z=5 FRB. The impact parameters between our sightlines and TNG structures of any mass appear consistent with those reported for likely galaxy-intersecting FRBs. However, we measure lower average accumulated DMs from these structures than the $\sim90\;{\rm pc\;cm^{-3}}$ DM excesses reported for these literature FRBs, indicating some DM may arise beyond the structures themselves.

PEARLS: Near Infrared Photometry in the JWST North Ecliptic Pole Time Domain Field

We present Near-Infrared (NIR) ground-based Y, J, H, and K imaging obtained in the James Webb Space Telescope North Ecliptic Pole Time Domain Field (TDF) using the MMT-Magellan Infrared Imager and Spectrometer (MMIRS) on the MMT.These new observations cover a field of approximately 230 arcmin^2 in Y, H, and K and 313 arcmin^2 in J. Using Monte Carlo simulations we estimate a 1 sigma depth relative to the background sky of (Y, J, H, K}) = (23.80, 23.53, 23.13, 23.28) in AB magnitudes for point sources at a 95% completeness level. These observations are part of the ground-based effort to characterize this region of the sky, supplementing space-based data obtained with Chandra, NuSTAR, XMM, AstroSat, HST, and JWST. This paper describes the observations and reduction of the NIR imaging and combines these NIR data with archival imaging in the visible, obtained with the Subaru Hyper-Suprime-Cam, to produce a merged catalog of 57,501 sources. The new observations reported here, plus the corresponding multi-wavelength catalog, will provide a baseline for time-domain studies of bright sources in the TDF.

Energy-Efficient Fracturing Based on Stress-Coupled Perforation

Hydraulic fracturing is one of the key technologies for reservoir stimulation in low-permeability/unconventional oil and gas fields. In response to the high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions caused by extreme flow-limiting perforation in hydraulic fracturing, stress-coupled perforation technology has been proposed to promote low-energy consumption and high efficiency in artificial fracturing. Based on the stress distribution in perforation hole and fracture propagation mechanism, a mathematical model for fracture propagation was established based on linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. Taking into account rock mechanical parameters, tensile effects at the crack tip, stress on both sides of the main crack and fracturing parameters, the real-time stress distribution and fracturing energy consumption were calculated using Monte Carlo random method and Newton's iterative method. With the unit fracture area energy consumption, total fracture area, and fracture uniformity as objective functions, the number and diameter of perforation holes were fully coupled and optimized. The developed simulator balances the calculation efficiency and accuracy of multiple fracture propagation. The study shows that under the condition of the same reservoir fracture volume, stress-coupled perforation technology will reduce energy consumption by 37%. This technology has been successfully applied to the reservoir stimulation of Fan Ye 1 well horizontal well in Jiyang Depression, improving the energy utilization efficiency of hydraulic fracturing and reducing carbon emissions.

CoLFI: Cosmological Likelihood-free Inference with Neural Density Estimators

In previous works, we proposed to estimate cosmological parameters with the artificial neural network (ANN) and the mixture density network (MDN). In this work, we propose an improved method called the mixture neural network (MNN) to achieve parameter estimation by combining ANN and MDN, which can overcome shortcomings of the ANN and MDN methods. Besides, we propose sampling parameters in a hyper-ellipsoid for the generation of the training set, which makes the parameter estimation more efficient. A high-fidelity posterior distribution can be obtained using $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ forward simulation samples. In addition, we develop a code-named CoLFI for parameter estimation, which incorporates the advantages of MNN, ANN, and MDN, and is suitable for any parameter estimation of complicated models in a wide range of scientific fields. CoLFI provides a more efficient way for parameter estimation, especially for cases where the likelihood function is intractable or cosmological models are complex and resource-consuming. It can learn the conditional probability density $p(\boldsymbolθ|\boldsymbol{d})$ using samples generated by models, and the posterior distribution $p(\boldsymbolθ|\boldsymbol{d}_0)$ can be obtained for a given observational data $\boldsymbol{d}_0$. We tested the MNN using power spectra of the cosmic microwave background and Type Ia supernovae and obtained almost the same result as the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The numerical difference only exists at the level of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2}σ)$. The method can be extended to higher-dimensional data.

PEARLS: Low Stellar Density Galaxies in the El Gordo Cluster Observed with JWST

A full understanding of how unusually large "Ultra Diffuse Galaxies" (UDGs) fit into our conventional understanding of dwarf galaxies remains elusive, despite the large number of objects identified locally. A natural extension of UDG research is the study of similar galaxies at higher redshift to establish how their properties may evolve over time. However, this has been a challenging task given how severely systematic effects and cosmological surface brightness dimming inhibit our ability to study low-surface brightness galaxies at high-$z$. Here, we present an identification of low stellar surface density galaxies (LDGs), likely the progenitors of local UDGs, at moderate redshift with deep near-IR observations of the El Gordo cluster at $z = 0.87$ with JWST. By stacking 8 NIRCAM filters, we are able to achieve an apparent surface brightness sensitivity of $24.59$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$, faint enough to be complete to the bright end of the LDG population. Our analysis identifies significant differences between this population and local UDGs, such as their color and size distributions, which suggest that UDG progenitors are bluer and more extended at high-$z$ than at $z = 0$. This suggests that multiple mechanisms are responsible for UDG formation and that prolonged transformation of cluster dwarfs is not a primary UDG formation mechanism at high-$z$. Furthermore, we find a slight overabundance of LDGs in El Gordo, and, in contrast to findings in local clusters, our analysis does not show a deficit of LDGs in the center of El Gordo, implying that tidal destruction of LDGs is significant between $z = 0.87$ and $z = 0$.

Are JWST/NIRCam color gradients in the lensed z=2.3 dusty star-forming galaxy El Anzuelo due to central dust attenuation or inside-out galaxy growth?

Gradients in the mass-to-light ratio of distant galaxies impede our ability to characterize their size and compactness. The long-wavelength filters of $JWST$'s NIRCam offer a significant step forward. For galaxies at Cosmic Noon ($z\sim2$), this regime corresponds to the rest-frame near-infrared, which is less biased towards young stars and captures emission from the bulk of a galaxy's stellar population. We present an initial analysis of an extraordinary lensed dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at $z=2.3$ behind the $El~Gordo$ cluster ($z=0.87$), named $El~Anzuelo$ ("The Fishhook") after its partial Einstein-ring morphology. The FUV-NIR SED suggests an intrinsic star formation rate of $81^{+7}_{-2}~M_\odot~{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and dust attenuation $A_V\approx 1.6$, in line with other DSFGs on the star-forming main sequence. We develop a parametric lens model to reconstruct the source-plane structure of dust imaged by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, far-UV to optical light from $Hubble$, and near-IR imaging with 8 filters of $JWST$/NIRCam, as part of the Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science (PEARLS) program. The source-plane half-light radius is remarkably consistent from $\sim 1-4.5~μ$m, despite a clear color gradient where the inferred galaxy center is redder than the outskirts. We interpret this to be the result of both a radially-decreasing gradient in attenuation and substantial spatial offsets between UV- and IR-emitting components. A spatial decomposition of the SED reveals modestly suppressed star formation in the inner kiloparsec, which suggests that we are witnessing the early stages of inside-out quenching.

Redshifting galaxies from DESI to JWST CEERS: Correction of biases and uncertainties in quantifying morphology

Observations of high-redshift galaxies with unprecedented detail have now been rendered possible with JWST. However, accurately quantifying their morphology remains uncertain due to potential biases and uncertainties. To address this issue, we used a sample of 1816 nearby DESI galaxies, with a mass range of $10^{9.75-11.25}M_{\odot}$, to compute artificial images of galaxies of the same mass located at $0.75\leq z\leq 3$ and observed at rest-frame optical wavelength in CEERS. We analyzed the effects of cosmological redshift on the measurements of Petrosian radius ($R_p$), half-light radius ($R_{50}$), asymmetry ($A$), concentration ($C$), axis ratio ($q$), and Sérsic index ($n$). Our results show that $R_p$ and $R_{50}$, calculated using non-parametric methods, are slightly overestimated due to PSF smoothing, while $R_{50}$, $q$, and $n$ obtained through model fitting does not exhibit significant biases. We improve the computation of $A$ by incorporating a more accurate noise effect removal procedure. Due to PSF asymmetry, there is a minor overestimation of $A$ for intrinsically symmetric galaxies. However, for intrinsically asymmetric galaxies, PSF smoothing dominates and results in an underestimation of $A$, an effect that becomes more significant with higher intrinsic $A$ or at lower resolutions. Moreover, PSF smoothing also leads to an underestimation of $C$, which is notably more pronounced in galaxies with higher intrinsic $C$ or at lower resolutions. We developed functions based on resolution level, defined as $R_p/$FWHM, for correcting these biases and the associated statistical uncertainties. Applying these corrections, we measured the bias-corrected morphology for the simulated CEERS images and we find that the derived quantities are in good agreement with their intrinsic values -- except for $A$, which is robust only for angularly large galaxies where $R_p/{\rm FWHM}\geq 5$.

Hidden giants in JWST's PEARLS: An ultra-massive z=4.26 sub-millimeter galaxy that is invisible to HST

We present a multi-wavelength analysis using SMA, JCMT, NOEMA, JWST, HST, and SST of two dusty strongly star-forming galaxies, 850.1 and 850.2, seen through the massive cluster lens A1489. These SMA-located sources both lie at z=4.26 and have bright dust continuum emission, but 850.2 is a UV-detected Lyman-break galaxy, while 850.1 is undetected at <2um, even with deep JWST/NIRCam observations. We investigate their stellar, ISM, and dynamical properties, including a pixel-level SED analysis to derive sub-kpc-resolution stellar-mass and Av maps. We find that 850.1 is one of the most massive and highly obscured, Av~5, galaxies known at z>4 with M*~10^11.8 Mo (likely forming at z>6), and 850.2 is one of the least massive and least obscured, Av~1, members of the z>4 dusty star-forming population. The diversity of these two dust-mass-selected galaxies illustrates the incompleteness of galaxy surveys at z>3-4 based on imaging at <2um, the longest wavelengths feasible from HST or the ground. The resolved mass map of 850.1 shows a compact stellar mass distribution, Re(mass)~1kpc, but its expected evolution to z~1.5 and then z~0 matches both the properties of massive, quiescent galaxies at z~1.5 and ultra-massive early-type galaxies at z~0. We suggest that 850.1 is the central galaxy of a group in which 850.2 is a satellite that will likely merge in the near future. The stellar morphology of 850.1 shows arms and a linear bar feature which we link to the active dynamical environment it resides within.

Performance of FAST with an Ultra-Wide Bandwidth Receiver at 500-3300 MHz

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) has been running for several years. A new Ultra-Wide Bandwidth (UWB) receiver, simultaneously covering 500-3300 MHz, has been mounted in the FAST feed cabin and passed a series of observational tests. The whole UWB band is separated into four independent bands. Each band has 1048576 channels in total, resulted in a spectral resolution of 1 kHz. At 500-3300 MHz, the antenna gain is around 14.3-7.7 K/Jy, the aperture efficiency is around 0.56-0.30, the system temperature is around 88-130 K, and the HPBW is around 7.6-1.6 arcmin. The measured standard deviation of pointing accuracy is better than ~7.9 arcsec, when zenith angle (ZA) is within 26.4deg. The sensitivity and stability of the UWB receiver are confirmed to satisfy expectation by spectral observations, e.g., HI and OH. The FAST UWB receiver already has a good performance for taking sensitive observations in various scientific goals.

Deep HI Mapping of Stephan's Quintet and Its Neighborhood

We carried out deep mapping observations of the atomic hydrogen (HI) 21 cm line emission in a field centered on the famous galaxy group Stephan's Quintet (SQ), using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) equipped with the 19-Beam Receiver. The final data cube reaches an HI column density sensitivity of $5 σ= 2.1\times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$ per 20 km s$^{-1}$ channel with an angular resolution of $4'.0$. The discovery of a large diffuse feature of the HI emission in the outskirt of the intragroup medium of SQ was reported in a previous paper (Xu et al. 2022). Here we present a new study of the total HI emission of SQ and the detection of several neighboring galaxies, exploiting the high sensitivity and the large sky coverage of the FAST observations. A total HI mass of $M_{\rm HI} = 3.48 \pm 0.35 \times 10^{10}\; M_\odot$ is found for SQ, which is significantly higher than previous measurements in the literature. This indicates that, contrary to earlier claims, SQ is not HI deficient. The excessive HI gas is mainly found in the velocity ranges of 6200 - 6400 km s$^{-1}$ and 6800 - 7000 km s$^{-1}$, which was undetected in previous observations that are less sensitive than ours. Our results suggest that the ``missing HI" in compact groups may be hidden in the low-density diffuse neutral gas instead of in the ionized gas.

The evolution of k-shell in syndication networks reveals financial performance of venture capital institutions

Venture capital (VC) is a relatively newly emergent industry that is still subject to large uncertainties in China. Therefore, building a robust social network with other VC institutions is a good way to share information, various resources, and benefit from skill and knowledge complementarity to against risks. Strong evidences indicate that better networked VC institutions are of a better financial performance, however, most of previous works overlook the evolution of VC institutions and only focus on some simple topology indicators of the static syndication network, which also neglects higher-order network structure and cannot give a comprehensive evaluation. In this paper, based on VC investment records in the Chinese market, we construct temporal syndication networks between VC institutions year by year. As k-shell decomposition considers higher-order connection patterns, we employ k-shell as an evaluation of the influence of VC institutions in syndication networks. By clustering time series of k-shell values, the VC institutions in China fall into five groups that are quite different from each other on financial performances and investment behaviors. This, in turn, proves the power of our method that only based on proper sequential network properties, we can reveal their financial investment performance. Compared to other network centrality measurements, k-shell is a better indicator that is indicated by a smaller intra-group distance and a larger inter-group distance.

JWST's PEARLS: TN J1338-1942 -- I. Extreme jet triggered star-formation in a $z=4.11$ luminous radio galaxy

We present the first JWST observations of the $z=4.11$ luminous radio galaxy TN J1338-1942, obtained as part of the ``Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science'' (``PEARLS'') project. Our NIRCam observations, designed to probe the key rest-frame optical continuum and emission line features at this redshift, enable resolved spectral energy distribution modelling that incorporates both a range of stellar population assumptions and radiative shock models. With an estimated stellar mass of $\log_{10}(M/\text{M}_{\odot}) \sim 10.9$, TN J1338--1942 is confirmed to be one of the most massive galaxies known at this epoch. Our observations also reveal extremely high equivalent-width nebular emission coincident with the luminous AGN jets that is best fit by radiative shocks surrounded by extensive recent star-formation. We estimate the total star-formation rate (SFR) could be as high as $\sim1600\,\text{M}_{\odot}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$, with the SFR that we attribute to the jet induced burst conservatively $\gtrsim500\,\text{M}_{\odot}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$. The mass-weighted age of the star-formation, $t_{\text{mass}} <4$ Myr, is consistent with the likely age of the jets responsible for the triggered activity and significantly younger than that measured in the core of the host galaxy. The extreme scale of the potential jet-triggered star-formation activity indicates the potential importance of positive AGN feedback in the earliest stages of massive galaxy formation, with our observations also illustrating the extraordinary prospects for detailed studies of high-redshift galaxies with JWST.

A Diverse Population of z ~ 2 ULIRGs Revealed by JWST Imaging

Four ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) observed with JWST/NIRcam in the Cosmos Evolution Early Release Science program offer an unbiased preview of the $z\approx2$ ULIRG population. The objects were originally selected at 24 $μ$m and have strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features observed with Spitzer/IRS. The four objects have similar stellar masses of ${\sim}10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ but otherwise are quite diverse. One is an isolated disk galaxy, but it has an active nucleus as shown by X-ray observations and by a bright point-source nucleus. Two others are merging pairs with mass ratios of 6-7:1. One has active nuclei in both components, while the other has only one active nucleus: the one in the less-massive neighbor, not the ULIRG. The fourth object is clumpy and irregular and is probably a merger, but there is no sign of an active nucleus. The intrinsic spectral energy distributions for the four AGNs in these systems are typical of type-2 QSOs. This study is consistent with the idea that even if internal processes can produce large luminosities at $z\sim2$, galaxy merging may still be necessary for the most luminous objects. The diversity of these four initial examples suggests that large samples will be needed to understand the $z\approx2$ ULIRG population.

A scale-based study of the Reynolds number scaling for the near-wall streamwise turbulence intensity in wall turbulence

Very recently, a defect model which depicts the growth tendency of the near-wall peak of the streamwise turbulence intensity has been developed (Chen $\&$ Sreenivasan, J. Fluid Mech. (2021), vol.908, R3). Based on the finiteness of the near-wall turbulence production, this model predicts that the magnitude of the peak will approach a finite limit as the Reynolds number increases. In the present study, we revisit the basic hypotheses of the model, such as the balance between the turbulence production and the wall dissipation in the region of peak production, the negligible effects of the logarithmic motions on the wall dissipation, and the typical time-scale that the outer-layer flow imposes on the inner layer. Our analyses show that some of them are not consistent with the characteristics of the wall-bounded turbulence. Moreover, based on the spectral stochastic estimation, we develop a framework to assess the wall dissipation contributed by the energy-containing eddies populating the logarithmic region, and uncover the linkage between its magnitude and the local Reynolds number. Our results demonstrate that these multi-scale eddies make a non-negligible contribution to the formation of the wall dissipation. Based on these observations, we verify that the classical logarithmic model, which suggests a logarithmic growth of the near-wall peak of the streamwise turbulence intensity with regard to the friction Reynolds number, is more physically consistent, and still holds even with the latest high-Reynolds-number database.

Understanding the chemical evolution of blue Edge-on Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present a sample of 330 blue edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (ELSBGs). To understand the chemical evolution of LSBGs, we derived the gas-phase abundance and the [$α$/Fe] ratio. Compared with star-forming galaxies, ELSBGs show a flatter trend in the mass-metallicity ($M_*-Z$) relation, suggesting that the oxygen abundance enhancement is inefficient. We focus on 77 ELSBGs with HI data and found the closed-box model can not explain their gas fraction and metallicity relation, implying that infall and/or outflow is needed. We derived the [$α$/Fe] ratio of normal ELSBG ($<$ 10$^{9.5}$M$\odot$) and massive ELSBG ($>=$ 10$^{9.5}$M$\odot$) using single stellar population grids from MILES stellar library. The mean [$α$/Fe] ratios are 0.18 and 0.4 for normal ELSBG and massive ELSBG, respectively. We discussed that the long time-scale of star-formation, and/or metal-rich gas outflow event caused by SNe Ia winds are likely responsible for the $α$-enhancement of massive ELSBGs.
