Strong Inter-valley Electron-Phonon Coupling in Magic-Angle Twisted Bilayer Graphene

The unusual properties of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) have sparked enormous research interest. However, despite the dedication of intensive experimental efforts and the proposal of several possible pairing mechanisms, the origin of its superconductivity remains elusive. Here, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with micrometer spatial resolution, we have revealed flat band replicas in superconducting MATBG, where MATBG is unaligned with its hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate11. These replicas exhibit uniform energy spacing, approximately 150 +- 15 meV apart, indicative of strong electron-boson coupling. Strikingly, these replicas are absent in non-superconducting twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) systems, either when MATBG is aligned to hBN or when TBG deviates from the magic angle. Calculations suggest that the formation of these flat band replicas in superconducting MATBG are attributed to the strong coupling between flat band electrons and an optical phonon mode at the graphene K point, facilitated by inter-valley scattering. These findings, although do not necessarily put electron phonon coupling as the main driving force for the superconductivity in MATBG, unravel the unique electronic structure inherent in superconducting MATBG, thereby providing crucial information for understanding the unusual electronic landscape from which the superconductivity is derived.

Risk Quadrangle and Robust Optimization Based on Extended $φ$-Divergence

The Fundamental Risk Quadrangle (FRQ) is a unified framework linking risk management, statistical estimation, and optimization. Distributionally robust optimization (DRO) based on $φ$-divergence minimizes the maximal expected loss, where the maximum is over a $φ$-divergence ambiguity set. This paper introduces the \emph{extended} $φ$-divergence and the extended $φ$-divergence quadrangle, which integrates DRO into the FRQ framework. We derive the primal and dual representations of the quadrangle elements (risk, deviation, regret, error, and statistic). The dual representation provides an interpretation of classification, portfolio optimization, and regression as robust optimization based on the extended $φ$-divergence. The primal representation offers tractable formulations of these robust optimizations as convex optimization. We provide illustrative examples showing that many common problems, such as least-squares regression, quantile regression, support vector machines, and CVaR optimization, fall within this framework. Additionally, we conduct a case study to visualize the optimal solution of the inner maximization in robust optimization.

SPARS3R: Semantic Prior Alignment and Regularization for Sparse 3D Reconstruction

Recent efforts in Gaussian-Splat-based Novel View Synthesis can achieve photorealistic rendering; however, such capability is limited in sparse-view scenarios due to sparse initialization and over-fitting floaters. Recent progress in depth estimation and alignment can provide dense point cloud with few views; however, the resulting pose accuracy is suboptimal. In this work, we present SPARS3R, which combines the advantages of accurate pose estimation from Structure-from-Motion and dense point cloud from depth estimation. To this end, SPARS3R first performs a Global Fusion Alignment process that maps a prior dense point cloud to a sparse point cloud from Structure-from-Motion based on triangulated correspondences. RANSAC is applied during this process to distinguish inliers and outliers. SPARS3R then performs a second, Semantic Outlier Alignment step, which extracts semantically coherent regions around the outliers and performs local alignment in these regions. Along with several improvements in the evaluation process, we demonstrate that SPARS3R can achieve photorealistic rendering with sparse images and significantly outperforms existing approaches.

Me LLaMA: Foundation Large Language Models for Medical Applications

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and LLaMA show promise in medical applications, yet challenges remain in medical language comprehension. This study presents Me-LLaMA, a new medical LLM family based on open-source LLaMA models, optimized for medical text analysis and diagnosis by leveraging large-scale, domain-specific datasets. The Me-LLaMA family, including foundation models Me-LLaMA 13/70B and their chat-enhanced versions, was developed through continued pre-training and instruction tuning with 129B tokens and 214K samples from biomedical and clinical sources. Training the 70B models required over 100,000 A100 GPU hours. Me-LLaMA's performance was evaluated across six medical text analysis tasks using 12 benchmark datasets and complex clinical case diagnosis, with automatic and human evaluations. Results indicate Me-LLaMA outperforms LLaMA and other open-source medical LLMs in zero-shot and supervised settings. Task-specific tuning further boosts performance, surpassing ChatGPT on 7 of 8 datasets and GPT-4 on 5 of 8. For complex clinical cases, Me-LLaMA achieves performance comparable to ChatGPT and GPT-4. This work underscores the importance of domain-specific data in developing medical LLMs and addresses the high computational costs involved in training, highlighting a balance between pre-training and fine-tuning strategies. Me-LLaMA models are now accessible under user agreements, providing a valuable resource for advancing medical AI.

VILLS -- Video-Image Learning to Learn Semantics for Person Re-Identification

Person Re-identification is a research area with significant real world applications. Despite recent progress, existing methods face challenges in robust re-identification in the wild, e.g., by focusing only on a particular modality and on unreliable patterns such as clothing. A generalized method is highly desired, but remains elusive to achieve due to issues such as the trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution and imperfect feature extraction. We propose VILLS (Video-Image Learning to Learn Semantics), a self-supervised method that jointly learns spatial and temporal features from images and videos. VILLS first designs a local semantic extraction module that adaptively extracts semantically consistent and robust spatial features. Then, VILLS designs a unified feature learning and adaptation module to represent image and video modalities in a consistent feature space. By Leveraging self-supervised, large-scale pre-training, VILLS establishes a new State-of-The-Art that significantly outperforms existing image and video-based methods.

Tetragonal BaCoO$_3$: A Co$^{4+}$ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator with Inverted Spin Crossover

The interplay between crystal electric field splitting of d states and Hund's rule exchange energy in cobalt-based perovskites offers a promising avenue for inducing spin-state transitions. This study reports a new body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO$_3$ (BCT-BaCoO$_3$), synthesized under high pressure (15 GPa) and high temperature (1200 °C) conditions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ adopts a double perovskite structure of EuTiO$_3$-type (space group I4/mcm, #140), confirmed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a rare Co$^{4+}$ valence state. Magnetization and X-ray absorption measurements reveal a low-spin to high-spin transition that takes place between 200 and 300 K. While spin crossovers are relatively common among common oxides, the one observed in BCT-BaCoO$_3$ is remarkable in that it proceeds in the opposite direction from conventional spin transitions. BCT-BaCoO$_3$ exhibits a low-spin (S = 1/2) state at high temperatures and transitions to a high-spin (S = 5/2) state at low temperatures. Within the high-spin state, hard ferromagnetic order onsets at T$_C$ = 107 K. Electrical resistivity indicates weak magnetoresistance and insulating behavior. Overall, BCT-BaCoO$_3$ presents an exceptional model for the exploration of spin-state transitions and the study of Co spin states in cobalt-based perovskites.

3D Heisenberg universality in the Van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$

Van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials are comprised of layers of atomically thin sheets, making them ideal platforms for studying magnetism at the two-dimensional (2D) limit. These materials are at the center of a host of novel types of experiments, however, there are notably few pathways to directly probe their magnetic structure. We report the magnetic order within a single crystal of NiPS$_3$ and show it can be accessed with resonant elastic X-ray diffraction along the edge of the vdW planes in a carefully grown crystal by detecting structurally forbidden resonant magnetic X-ray scattering. We find the magnetic order parameter has a critical exponent of $β\sim0.36$, indicating that the magnetism of these vdW crystals is more adequately characterized by the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg universality class. We verify these findings with first-principle density functional theory, Monte-Carlo simulations, and density matrix renormalization group calculations.

DreamCraft3D++: Efficient Hierarchical 3D Generation with Multi-Plane Reconstruction Model

We introduce DreamCraft3D++, an extension of DreamCraft3D that enables efficient high-quality generation of complex 3D assets. DreamCraft3D++ inherits the multi-stage generation process of DreamCraft3D, but replaces the time-consuming geometry sculpting optimization with a feed-forward multi-plane based reconstruction model, speeding up the process by 1000x. For texture refinement, we propose a training-free IP-Adapter module that is conditioned on the enhanced multi-view images to enhance texture and geometry consistency, providing a 4x faster alternative to DreamCraft3D's DreamBooth fine-tuning. Experiments on diverse datasets demonstrate DreamCraft3D++'s ability to generate creative 3D assets with intricate geometry and realistic 360° textures, outperforming state-of-the-art image-to-3D methods in quality and speed. The full implementation will be open-sourced to enable new possibilities in 3D content creation.

Distillation-guided Representation Learning for Unconstrained Gait Recognition

Gait recognition holds the promise of robustly identifying subjects based on walking patterns instead of appearance information. While previous approaches have performed well for curated indoor data, they tend to underperform in unconstrained situations, e.g. in outdoor, long distance scenes, etc. We propose a framework, termed GAit DEtection and Recognition (GADER), for human authentication in challenging outdoor scenarios. Specifically, GADER leverages a Double Helical Signature to detect segments that contain human movement and builds discriminative features through a novel gait recognition method, where only frames containing gait information are used. To further enhance robustness, GADER encodes viewpoint information in its architecture, and distills representation from an auxiliary RGB recognition model, which enables GADER to learn from silhouette and RGB data at training time. At test time, GADER only infers from the silhouette modality. We evaluate our method on multiple State-of-The-Arts(SoTA) gait baselines and demonstrate consistent improvements on indoor and outdoor datasets, especially with a significant 25.2% improvement on unconstrained, remote gait data.

GaitContour: Efficient Gait Recognition based on a Contour-Pose Representation

Gait recognition holds the promise to robustly identify subjects based on walking patterns instead of appearance information. In recent years, this field has been dominated by learning methods based on two principal input representations: dense silhouette masks or sparse pose keypoints. In this work, we propose a novel, point-based Contour-Pose representation, which compactly expresses both body shape and body parts information. We further propose a local-to-global architecture, called GaitContour, to leverage this novel representation and efficiently compute subject embedding in two stages. The first stage consists of a local transformer that extracts features from five different body regions. The second stage then aggregates the regional features to estimate a global human gait representation. Such a design significantly reduces the complexity of the attention operation and improves efficiency and performance simultaneously. Through large scale experiments, GaitContour is shown to perform significantly better than previous point-based methods, while also being significantly more efficient than silhouette-based methods. On challenging datasets with significant distractors, GaitContour can even outperform silhouette-based methods.

OneGen: Efficient One-Pass Unified Generation and Retrieval for LLMs

Despite the recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs), which have significantly enhanced the generative capabilities for various NLP tasks, LLMs still face limitations in directly handling retrieval tasks. However, many practical applications demand the seamless integration of both retrieval and generation. This paper introduces a novel and efficient One-pass Generation and retrieval framework (OneGen), designed to improve LLMs' performance on tasks that require both generation and retrieval. The proposed framework bridges the traditionally separate training approaches for generation and retrieval by incorporating retrieval tokens generated autoregressively. This enables a single LLM to handle both tasks simultaneously in a unified forward pass. We conduct experiments on two distinct types of composite tasks, RAG and Entity Linking, to validate the pluggability, effectiveness, and efficiency of OneGen in training and inference. Furthermore, our results show that integrating generation and retrieval within the same context preserves the generative capabilities of LLMs while improving retrieval performance. To the best of our knowledge, OneGen is the first to enable LLMs to conduct vector retrieval during the generation.

Multiway Junction Conditions: Booklets and Webs

Junction conditions play a crucial role in constructing new gravity solutions. In this paper, we derive the junction condition for gluing together an arbitrary number of spacetimes along a common interface. We develop a geometric technique of reverse extension and provide precise definitions of geometric quantities at the interface. This leads to a geometric derivation of the multiway junction condition. As a cross-check, we independently re-derive the junction condition by varying the action of some specific gravitational models including both Einstein gravity and dilaton gravity. We demonstrate that the junction condition is invariant under a change of frames, and the form of the junction condition is the same for both spacelike and timelike interfaces.

Drone-assisted Road Gaussian Splatting with Cross-view Uncertainty

Robust and realistic rendering for large-scale road scenes is essential in autonomous driving simulation. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3D-GS) has made groundbreaking progress in neural rendering, but the general fidelity of large-scale road scene renderings is often limited by the input imagery, which usually has a narrow field of view and focuses mainly on the street-level local area. Intuitively, the data from the drone's perspective can provide a complementary viewpoint for the data from the ground vehicle's perspective, enhancing the completeness of scene reconstruction and rendering. However, training naively with aerial and ground images, which exhibit large view disparity, poses a significant convergence challenge for 3D-GS, and does not demonstrate remarkable improvements in performance on road views. In order to enhance the novel view synthesis of road views and to effectively use the aerial information, we design an uncertainty-aware training method that allows aerial images to assist in the synthesis of areas where ground images have poor learning outcomes instead of weighting all pixels equally in 3D-GS training like prior work did. We are the first to introduce the cross-view uncertainty to 3D-GS by matching the car-view ensemble-based rendering uncertainty to aerial images, weighting the contribution of each pixel to the training process. Additionally, to systematically quantify evaluation metrics, we assemble a high-quality synthesized dataset comprising both aerial and ground images for road scenes.

PhaGO: Protein function annotation for bacteriophages by integrating the genomic context

Bacteriophages are viruses that target bacteria, playing a crucial role in microbial ecology. Phage proteins are important in understanding phage biology, such as virus infection, replication, and evolution. Although a large number of new phages have been identified via metagenomic sequencing, many of them have limited protein function annotation. Accurate function annotation of phage proteins presents several challenges, including their inherent diversity and the scarcity of annotated ones. Existing tools have yet to fully leverage the unique properties of phages in annotating protein functions. In this work, we propose a new protein function annotation tool for phages by leveraging the modular genomic structure of phage genomes. By employing embeddings from the latest protein foundation models and Transformer to capture contextual information between proteins in phage genomes, PhaGO surpasses state-of-the-art methods in annotating diverged proteins and proteins with uncommon functions by 6.78% and 13.05% improvement, respectively. PhaGO can annotate proteins lacking homology search results, which is critical for characterizing the rapidly accumulating phage genomes. We demonstrate the utility of PhaGO by identifying 688 potential holins in phages, which exhibit high structural conservation with known holins. The results show the potential of PhaGO to extend our understanding of newly discovered phages.

Order by projection in single-band Hubbard model: a DMRG study

In a Fermi system near or at half-filling, a specific superconducting pairing channel, if not explicitly included in the Hamiltonian, can be boosted by suppressing a competing pairing channel; this is exemplified by the enhancement of extended $s$-wave correlations upon suppressing $s$-wave Cooper pairing. This phenomenon, originally found by the use of generalized uncertainty relations is referred to as \emph{order by projection}. The case of zero on-site Coulomb interaction in the thermodynamic limit, confirms this mechanism through the analytical solution. In this study, we go further and systematically investigate this mechanism for a strongly correlated fermionic Hubbard model, now with finite on-site interaction, on a square lattice with an extended set of hopping parameters. We explore the behaviors of different pairing channels when one of them is suppressed, utilizing density matrix renormalization group calculations. Our findings provide numerical evidence supporting the existence of \emph{order by projection} in the strongly correlated system we studied. We also investigate the effect of the strength of Hubbard $U$, next-nearest neighbor $t'$, hole-doping, as well as finite-size scaling approaching the thermodynamic limit.

UF-HOBI at "Discharge Me!": A Hybrid Solution for Discharge Summary Generation Through Prompt-based Tuning of GatorTronGPT Models

Automatic generation of discharge summaries presents significant challenges due to the length of clinical documentation, the dispersed nature of patient information, and the diverse terminology used in healthcare. This paper presents a hybrid solution for generating discharge summary sections as part of our participation in the "Discharge Me!" Challenge at the BioNLP 2024 Shared Task. We developed a two-stage generation method using both extractive and abstractive techniques, in which we first apply name entity recognition (NER) to extract key clinical concepts, which are then used as input for a prompt-tuning-based GatorTronGPT model to generate coherent text for two important sections including "Brief Hospital Course" and "Discharge Instructions". Our system was ranked 5th in this challenge, achieving an overall score of 0.284. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our hybrid solution in improving the quality of automated discharge section generation.

Stochastic Traveling Salesperson Problem with Neighborhoods for Object Detection

We introduce a new route-finding problem which considers perception and travel costs simultaneously. Specifically, we consider the problem of finding the shortest tour such that all objects of interest can be detected successfully. To represent a viable detection region for each object, we propose to use an entropy-based viewing score that generates a diameter-bounded region as a viewing neighborhood. We formulate the detection-based trajectory planning problem as a stochastic traveling salesperson problem with neighborhoods and propose a center-visit method that obtains an approximation ratio of O(DmaxDmin) for disjoint regions. For non-disjoint regions, our method -provides a novel finite detour in 3D, which utilizes the region's minimum curvature property. Finally, we show that our method can generate efficient trajectories compared to a baseline method in a photo-realistic simulation environment.

High-pressure characterization of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$: Implications for strain-induced band tuning

Recent band structure calculations have suggested the potential for band tuning in a chiral semiconductor, Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$, to zero upon application of negative strain. In this study, we report on the synthesis of polycrystalline Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ and investigate its transport, optical properties, and pressure compatibility. Transport measurements reveal the semiconducting behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ with high resistivity and an activation energy $E_a$ of 0.2 eV. The optical band gap determined by diffuse reflectance measurements is about three times wider than the experimental $E_a$. Despite the difference, both experimental gaps fall within the range of predicted band gaps by our first-principles DFT calculations employing the PBE and mBJ methods. Furthermore, our DFT simulations predict a progressive narrowing of the band gap under compressive strain, with a full closure expected at a strain of -4% relative to the lattice parameter. To evaluate the feasibility of gap tunability at such substantial strain, the high-pressure behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ was investigated by $in$ $situ$ high-pressure X-ray diffraction up to 47 GPa. Mechanical compression beyond 4% resulted in a pressure-induced structural transformation, indicating the possibilities of substantial gap modulation under extreme compression conditions.
