Proximal-Only Transmission Matrix Recovery of an Arbitrarily Deformed Graded-Index Multimode Fiber

The multimode fiber is among the thinnest imaging conduits available, carrying hundreds to thousands of spatial modes through a cross-section comparable to a human hair, but its endoscopic capabilities are currently limited by the sensitivity of the transmission matrix to the fiber's deformed state. Proximal-only recovery of the fiber's transmission matrix is an appealing approach for enabling general use multimode fiber endoscopy, and within the last decade, machine learning techniques have been applied to both single-ended and double-ended transmission matrix recovery tasks. We present a new approach to this interdisciplinary problem and show that neural networks can generalize to recover transmission matrices of an arbitrarily deformed graded-index multimode fiber from proximal measurements alone.

Neural Phase Correlation

Correspondence is fundamentally relational: it seeks the unknown transformation between two observations of a common scene, not the content of either. Yet the dominant learning-based methods do not represent the transformation as a first-class object in the architecture. They encode each image independently and let a learned similarity function or a deep decoder discover the mapping implicitly. Phase correlation is the canonical exception, measuring the inter-image relationship directly in the Fourier domain, but the rigidity of its fixed basis confines it to global translation. We introduce a learned generalization of phase correlation that lifts this restriction by learning the basis on which the transformation decomposes. The same algebraic primitive extends to dense non-rigid deformations and to unitary dynamics. On the ACDC cardiac-MRI benchmark the framework matches or exceeds prior published baselines on both registration directions. On CAMUS echocardiography it matches state-of-the-art without auxiliary scoring or adaptive-smoothness mechanisms. Applied to time-evolved wavefunction pairs of the 1-D quantum harmonic oscillator, the same framework recovers the Hermite-function eigenstates and the quantized energy levels of the unknown Hamiltonian from observation pairs alone.

Origin of degenerate bound states in the continuum in a grating waveguide: Parity symmetry breaking due to mode crossing

We explain the origin of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in a planar grating waveguide, in particular, a mechanism for formation of degenerate BICs, via the analytical theory of the infinite-grating eigenmodes. Conventional symmetry-protected BICs are formed at normal incidence mainly by a single infinite-grating eigenmode that has an odd spatial parity on both sides of the BIC resonance. The odd parity is the reason for a cutoff from the radiation-loss channel and appearance of such BICs. The mechanism of emergence of a degenerate BIC in a vicinity of a degenerate frequency of two infinite-grating eigenmodes is different. The degenerate BIC is formed by an anti-phased coherent superposition of two crossing infinite-grating eigenmodes both of which possess a mixed parity and experience parity symmetry breaking as the frequency scans through the degeneracy point. In this case a cutoff from the radiation-loss channel and extremely high-Q narrow resonance is achieved due to the destructive interference of the two crossing eigenmodes. Implementation of such a mechanism can be instructive for designing BICs in other photonic crystals and structures.
