Blow-up algebras, determinantal ideals, and Dedekind-Mertens-like formulas

We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gr\"obner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that the initial ideals correspond to vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, and we determine their Hilbert functions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. As a consequence, we find explicit minimal reductions for all Ferrers and many specialized Ferrers ideals, as well as their reduction numbers. These results can be viewed as extensions of the classical Dedekind-Mertens formula for the content of the product of two polynomials.

On Igusa zeta functions of monomial ideals

We show that the real parts of the poles of the Igusa zeta function of a monomial ideal can be computed from the torus-invariant divisors on the normalized blowing-up along the ideal. Moreover, we show that every such number is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial associated to the monomial ideal.

Jet schemes of determinantal varieties

This article studies the scheme structure of the jet schemes of determinantal varieties. We show that in general, these jet schemes are not irreducible. In the case of the determinantal variety $X$ of $r \times s$ matrices of rank at most one, we give a formula for the dimension of each of the components of its jet schemes. As an application, we compute the log canonical threshold of the pair $(\mathbb{A}^{rs},X)$.

One higher dimensional analog of jet schemes

We develop the theory of truncated wedge schemes, a higher dimensional analog of jet schemes. We prove some basic properties and give an irreducibility criterion for truncated wedge schemes of a locally complete intersection variety analogous to Mustaţǎ's for jet schemes. We show that the reduced subscheme structure of a truncated wedge scheme of any monomial scheme is itself a monomial scheme in a natural way by explicitly describing generators of each of the minimal primes of any truncated wedge scheme of a monomial hypersurface. We give evidence that the irreducible components of the truncated wedge schemes of a reduced monomial hypersurface all have multiplicity one.

Multiplicity of jet schemes of monomial schemes

This article studies jet schemes of monomial schemes. They are known to be equidimensional but usually are not reduced. We thus investigate their structure further, giving a formula for the multiplicity along every component of the jet schemes of a general reduced monomial hypersurface (that is, the case of a simple normal crossing divisor).
