Spectral shaping of Gaussian white noise for synthetic axion signal generation in microwave cavity haloscopes

Microwave cavity haloscopes search for dark-matter axions through the weak electromagnetic field generated by axion-photon conversion in a static magnetic field. Realistic synthetic signals are essential for end-to-end calibration of the receiver, validation of the analysis pipeline, measurement of signal recovery efficiency, and blind-injection studies. Here, we present a general method for producing stochastic synthetic axion waveforms by shaping Gaussian white noise in the frequency domain. The target axion power spectral density is imposed directly on the Fourier coefficients, and arbitrarily long continuous time streams are generated efficiently using an overlap-save implementation. The method reproduces both the ensemble-averaged spectral line shape and the time-domain fluctuations expected for a classical axion field, while providing direct control of the total injected power. Because the spectral model enters only through a replaceable transfer function, the routine can accommodate the Standard Halo Model as well as nonstandard velocity distributions and narrow substructure.

Broad frequency tuning of a Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting microwave cavity for dark matter searches

We demonstrate a novel broad-frequency tuning mechanism for superconducting microwave cavities designed for dark matter searches. Using a Nb$_3$Sn-coated cigar-shaped cavity operating at approximately 9\,GHz, we achieve continuous frequency tuning exceeding 1\,GHz by mechanically separating the two cavity halves: a "tuning-by-opening" technique. Finite-element method simulations predict that radiative losses do not degrade the quality factor even for large openings, as a closed cavity with an intrinsic quality factor of $10^7$ maintains this value for apertures up to 9\,mm, corresponding to a tuning range from 9.0 to 7.5\,GHz. Experimental validation using both copper ring spacers and a continuous sliding mechanism confirms $Q_0$ values exceeding the dark matter quality factor across the entire explored frequency range, despite mechanical imperfections and film non-uniformities. This tuning approach avoids inserting elements into the resonant volume, making it particularly suitable for high-Q superconducting cavities in axion haloscope experiments and readily applicable to REBCO-based implementations capable of operating in multi-tesla magnetic fields.

Low-energy spectrum of the BULLKID detector array operated on surface

We present the first continuous operation in a surface lab of BULLKID, a detector for searches of light Dark Matter and precision measurements of the coherent and elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The detector consists of an array of 60 cubic silicon particle absorbers of 0.34 g each, sensed by cryogenic kinetic inductance detectors. The data presented focusses on one of the central elements of the array and on its surrounding elements used as veto. The energy spectrum resulting from an exposure of 39 hours to ambient backgrounds, obtained without radiation shields, is flat at the level of $(2.0\pm0.1\,{\rm stat.}\pm0.2\,{\rm syst.})\times10^6$ counts / keV kg days down to the energy threshold of $160\pm13$ eV. The data analysis demonstrates the unique capability of rejecting backgrounds generated from interactions in other sites of the array, stemming from the segmented and monolithic structure of the detector.
