Evidence for charge orbital and spin stripe order in an overdoped manganite

We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupted by additional Mn4+ stripes.

Control of chiral magnetism in multiferroic MnWO4 through an electric field

The chiral components in the magnetic order in multiferroic MnWO4 have been studied by neutron diffraction using spherical polarization analysis as a function of temperature and of external electric field. We show that sufficiently close to the ferroelectric transition it is possible to switch the chiral component by applying moderate electric fields at constant temperature. Full hysteresis cycles can be observed which indicate strong pinning of the magnetic order. MnWO4, furthermore, exhibits a magnetoelectric memory effect across heating into the paramagnetic and paraelectric phase.

Magnetic field induced flop of cycloidal spin order in multiferroic TbMnO3: The magnetic structure of the P||a phase

Using in-field single crystal neutron diffraction we have determined the magnetic structure of TbMnO3 in the high field P||a phase. We unambiguously establish that the ferroelectric polarization arises from a cycloidal Mn spins ordering, with spins rotating in the ab plane. Our results demonstrate directly that the flop of the ferroelectric polarization in TbMnO3 with applied magnetic field is caused from the flop of the Mn cycloidal plane.

Magnetic correlations in La2-xSrxCoO4 studied by neutron scattering : possible evidence for stripe phases

Spin correlations in LSCO have been studied by neutron scattering. The commensurate antiferromagnetic order of the parent compound persists on a very short range up to a Sr content of x=0.3, whereas small amounts of Sr suppress commensurate antiferromagnetism in cuprates and in nickelates. For x>0.3 we find incommensurate spin ordering with the modulation closely following the amount of doping. These incommensurate phases strongly resemble the stripe phases observed in cuprates and nickelates, but incommensurate magnetic ordering appears only at larger Sr content in the cobaltates due to a reduced charge mobility.

Magnetic and structural transitions in La$_{1-x}A_{1-x}$CoO$_{3}$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, and Ba)

We report thermal-expansion, lattice-constant, and specific-heat data of the series La_1-xA_xCoO_3 for 0<= x <= 0.30 with A = Ca, Sr, and Ba. For the undoped compound LaCoO_3 the thermal-expansion coefficient alpha(T) exhibits a pronounced maximum around T=50K caused by a temperature-driven spin-state transition from a low-spin state of the Co^{3+$ ions at low towards a higher spin state at higher temperatures. The partial substitution of the La^{3+} ions by divalent Ca^{2+}, Sr^{2+}, or Ba^{2+} ions causes drastic changes in the macroscopic properties of LaCoO3. The large maximum in alpha(T) is suppressed and completely vanishes for x> 0.12. For A = Ca three different anomalies develop in alpha(T) with further increasing x, which are visible in specific-heat data as well. Together with temperature-dependent x-ray data we identify several phase transitions as a function of the doping concentration x and temperature. From these data we propose an extended phase diagram for La_1-xCa_xCoO_3.

Melting of magnetic correlations in charge-orbital ordered La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) : competition of ferro and antiferromagnetic states

The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) exhibits a dispersion of ferromagnetic correlations which remarkably resembles the magnon dispersion in ferromagnetically ordered metallic perovskite manganites.

Mott-Hubbard versus charge-transfer behavior in LaSrMnO4 studied via optical conductivity

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, we study the optical conductivity sigma(omega) of insulating LaSrMnO4 in the energy range of 0.75-5.8 eV from 15 to 330 K. The layered structure gives rise to a pronounced anisotropy. A multipeak structure is observed in sigma_1^a(omega) (2, 3.5, 4.5, 4.9, and 5.5 eV), while only one peak is present at 5.6 eV in sigma_1^c(omega). We employ a local multiplet calculation and obtain (i) an excellent description of the optical data, (ii) a detailed peak assignment in terms of the multiplet splitting of Mott-Hubbard and charge-transfer absorption bands, and (iii) effective parameters of the electronic structure, e.g., the on-site Coulomb repulsion U_eff=2.2 eV, the in-plane charge-transfer energy Delta_a=4.5 eV, and the crystal-field parameters for the d^4 configuration (10 Dq=1.2 eV, Delta_eg=1.4 eV, and Delta_t2g=0.2 eV). The spectral weight of the lowest absorption feature (at 1-2 eV) changes by a factor of 2 as a function of temperature, which can be attributed to the change of the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlation function across the Neel temperature. Interpreting LaSrMnO4 effectively as a Mott-Hubbard insulator naturally explains this strong temperature dependence, the relative weight of the different absorption peaks, and the pronounced anisotropy. By means of transmittance measurements, we determine the onset of the optical gap Delta^a_opt=0.4-0.45 eV at 15 K and 0.1-0.2 eV at 300 K. Our data show that the crystal-field splitting is too large to explain the anomalous temperature dependence of the c-axis lattice parameter by thermal occupation of excited crystal-field levels. Alternatively, we propose that a thermal population of the upper Hubbard band gives rise to the shrinkage of the c-axis lattice parameter.

Field dependence of magnetic correlations through the polarization flop transition in multiferroic TbMnO3 : evidence for a magnetic memory effect

The field-induced multiferroic transition in TbMnO3 has been studied by neutron scattering. Apart strong hysteresis, the magnetic transition associated with the flop of electronic polarization exhibits a memory effect: after a field sweep, TbMnO3 does not exhibit the same phase as that obtained by zero-field cooling. The strong changes in the magnetic excitations across the transition perfectly agree with a rotation of the cycloidal spiral plane indicating that the inverse Dzyaloshinski-Moriya coupling causes the giant magnetoelectric effect at the field-induced transition. The analysis of the zone-center magnetic excitations identifies the electromagnon of the multiferroic high-field phase.

Magnetic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3

The magnetic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the spiral and sinusoidally ordered phases. At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5meV-mode is in perfect agreement with recent infra-red-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as an hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.

Evidence for Multiple Phase Transitions in La_1-xCa_xCoO_3

We report thermal-expansion and specific-heat data of the series La_1-xCa_xCoO_3 for 0 <= x <= 0.3. For x = 0 the thermal-expansion coefficient alpha(T) features a pronounced maximum around T = 50 K caused by a temperature-dependent spin-state transition from a low-spin state (S=0) at low temperatures towards a higher spin state of the Co^3+ ions. The partial substitution of the La^3+ ions by divalent Ca^2+ ions causes drastic changes in the macroscopic properties of LaCoO_3. Around x ~ 0.125 the large maximum in alpha(T) has completely vanished. With further increasing x three different anomalies develop.

Magnetic heat transport in R$_2$CuO$_4$ (R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd)

We have studied the thermal conductivity $κ$ on single crystalline samples of the antiferromagnetic monolayer cuprates R$_2$CuO$_4$ with R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd. For a heat current within the CuO$_2$ planes, i.e. for $κ_{ab}$ we find high-temperature anomalies around 250 K in all samples. In contrast, the thermal conductivity $κ_c$ perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes, which we measured for R = La, Pr, and Gd, shows a conventional temperature dependence as expected for a purely phononic thermal conductivity. This qualitative anisotropy of $κ_i$ and the anomalous temperature dependence of $κ_{ab}$ give evidence for a significant magnetic contribution $κ_{mag}$ to the heat transport within the CuO$_2$ planes. Our results suggest, that a large magnetic contribution to the heat current is a common feature of single-layer cuprates. We find that $κ_{mag}$ is hardly affected by structural instabilities, whereas already weak charge carrier doping causes a strong suppression of $κ_{mag}$.

Spin-wave dispersion in orbitally ordered La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4)

The magnon dispersion in the charge, orbital and spin ordered phase in La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) has been studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering. We find an excellent agreement with a magnetic interaction model basing on the CE-type superstructure. The magnetic excitations are dominated by ferromagnetic exchange parameters revealing a nearly-one dimensional character at high energies. The nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interaction in La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) is significantly larger than the one in the metallic ferromagnetically ordered manganites. The large ferromagnetic interaction in the charge/orbital ordered phase appears to be essential for the capability of manganites to switch between metallic and insulating phases.

Thermal conductivity of R2CuO4, with R = La, Pr and Gd

We present measurements of the in-plane kappa_ab and out-of-plane kappa_c thermal conductivity of Pr2CuO4 and Gd2CuO4 single crystals. The anisotropy gives strong evidence for a large contribution of magnetic excitations to kappa_ab i.e. for a heat current within the CuO2 planes. However, the absolute values of kappa_mag are lower than previous results on La2CuO4. These differences probably arise from deviations from the nominal oxygen stoichiometry. This has a drastic influence on kappa_mag, which is shown by an investigation of a La2CuO4+delta polycrystal.

Crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_{4} : role of the orbital degree of freedom

The crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 (0<x<0.7) has been studied by diffraction techniques and high resolution capacitance dilatometry. There is no evidence for a structural phase transition like those found in isostructural cuprates or nickelates, but there are significant structural changes induced by the variation of temperature and doping which we attribute to a rearrangement of the orbital occupation.
