Precision Studies of Observables in pp->W->l nu and pp->gamma,Z->l+l- processes at the LHC

This report was prepared in the context of the LPCC "Electroweak Precision Measurements at the LHC WG" and summarizes the activity of a subgroup dedicated to the systematic comparison of public Monte Carlo codes, which describe the Drell-Yan processes at hadron colliders, in particular at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This work represents an important step towards the definition of an accurate simulation framework necessary for very high-precision measurements of electroweak (EW) observables such as the $W$ boson mass and the weak mixing angle. All the codes considered in this report share at least next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the prediction of the total cross sections in an expansion either in the strong or in the EW coupling constant. The NLO fixed-order predictions have been scrutinized at the technical level, using exactly the same inputs, setup and perturbative accuracy, in order to quantify the level of agreement of different implementations of the same calculation. A dedicated comparison, again at the technical level, of three codes that reach next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) accuracy in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) for the total cross section has also been performed. These fixed-order results are a well-defined reference that allows a classification of the impact of higher-order sets of radiative corrections. Several examples of higher-order effects due to the strong or the EW interaction are discussed in this common framework. Also the combination of QCD and EW corrections is discussed, together with the ambiguities that affect the final result, due to the choice of a specific combination recipe.

Exploring the Hadronic Axion Window via Delayed Neutralino Decay to Axinos at the LHC

The addition of the QCD axion to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) not only solves the strong CP problem but also modifies the dark sector with new dark matter candidates. While SUSY axion phenomenology is usually restricted to searches for the axion itself or searches for the ordinary SUSY particles, this work focuses on scenarios where the axion's superpartner, the axino, may be detectable at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the decays of neutralinos displaced from the primary vertex. In particular, we focus on the KSVZ axino within the hadronic axion window. The decay length of neutralinos in this scenario easily fits the ATLAS detector for SUSY spectra expected to be testable at the 14 TeV LHC. We compare this signature of displaced decays to axinos to other well motivated scenarios containing a long lived neutralino which decays inside the detector. These alternative scenarios can in some cases very closely mimic the expected axino signature, and the degree to which they are distinguishable is discussed. We also briefly comment on the cosmological viability of such a scenario.

Study of Electroweak Interactions at the Energy Frontier

With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the spectrum of particles in the Standard Model (SM) is complete. It is more important than ever to perform precision measurements and to test for deviations from SM predictions in the electroweak sector. In this report, we investigate two themes in the arena of precision electroweak measurements: the electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) that test the particle content and couplings in the SM and the minimal supersymmetric SM, and the measurements involving multiple gauge bosons in the final state which provide unique probes of the basic tenets of electroweak symmetry breaking. Among the important EWPOs we focus our discussion on M_W and sin^2 theta_eff^l, and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings probed by triboson production and vector boson scattering. We investigate the thresholds of precision that need to be achieved in order to be sensitive to new physics. We study the precision that can be achieved at various facilities on these observables. We discuss the calculational tools needed to predict SM rates and distributions in order to perform these measurements at the required precision. This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Precision Study of Electroweak Interactions working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass).

Studies of Vector Boson Scattering And Triboson Production with DELPHES Parametrized Fast Simulation for Snowmass 2013

Multiboson production provides a unique way to probe Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) and physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the default model is that EWSB occurs according to the Higgs mechanism. Deviations from the SM in Higgs and gauge boson properties due to new physics at a higher energy scale can be parameterized by higher-dimension operators in an Effective Field Theory (EFT). We present sensitivity studies for dimension-6 and dimension-8 operators in an EFT by looking for anomalous vector boson scattering and triboson production, at proton-proton colliders with center-of-mass energies of 14 TeV, 33 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively.

Combining NLO QCD and Electroweak Radiative Corrections to W boson Production at Hadron Colliders in the POWHEG Framework

The precision measurement of the mass of the $W$ boson is an important goal of the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It requires accurate theoretical calculations which incorporate both higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections, and also provide an interface to parton-shower Monte Carlo programs which make it possible to realistically simulate experimental data. In this paper, we present a combination of the full ${\cal O}(\alpha)$ electroweak corrections of {\tt WGRAD2}, and the next-to-leading order QCD radiative corrections to $W\to\ell\nu$ production in hadronic collisions in a single event generator based on the {\tt POWHEG} framework, which is able to interface with the parton-shower Monte Carlo programs {\tt Pythia} and {\tt Herwig}. Using this new combined QCD+EW Monte Carlo program for $W$ production we provide numerical results for total cross sections and kinematic distributions of relevance to the $W$ mass measurement at the Tevatron and the LHC for the processes $pp,p\bar p \to W^\pm \to \mu^\pm \nu_\mu$. In particular, we discuss the impact of EW corrections in the presence of QCD effects when including detector resolution effects.

NLO QCD predictions for W+1 jet and W+2 jet production with at least one b jet at the 7 TeV LHC

We calculate the production of a W boson in association with up to two jets including at least one b-jet to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with 7 TeV center-of-mass energy. Both exclusive and inclusive event cross section and b-jet cross sections are presented. The calculation is performed consistently in the five-flavor-number scheme where both q anti-q' and bq (q =\= b) initiated parton level processes are included at NLO QCD. We study the residual theoretical uncertainties of the NLO predictions due to the renormalization and factorization scale dependence, to the uncertainty from the parton distribution functions, and to the values of alpha_s and the bottom-quark mass.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables

This Report summarizes the results of the first 10 months' activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Sections Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the status-of-art on Higgs Physics at the LHC integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The Report is more than a mere collection of the proceedings of the general meetings. The subgroups have been working in different directions. An attempt has been made to present the first Report from these subgroups in a complete and homogeneous form. The subgroups' contributions correspondingly comprise the main parts of the Report. A significant amount of work has been performed in providing higher-order corrections to the Higgs-boson cross sections and pinning down the theoretical uncertainty of the Standard Model predictions. This Report comprises explicit numerical results on total cross sections, leaving the issues of event selection cuts and differential distributions to future publications. The subjects for further study are identified.

Associated Production of a W Boson and One b Jet

We calculate the production of a W boson and a single b jet to next-to-leading order in QCD at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Both exclusive and inclusive cross sections are presented. We separately consider the cross section for jets containing a single b quark and jets containing a b-anti b pair. There are a wide variety of processes that contribute, and it is necessary to include them all in order to have a complete description at both colliders.

W- and Z-boson production with a massive bottom-quark pair at the Large Hadron Collider

We present total and differential cross sections for W b anti-b and Z b anti-b production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, including Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections and full bottom-quark mass effects. We also provide numerical results obtained with a center-of-mass energy of 10 TeV. We study the scale uncertainty of the total cross sections due to the residual renormalization- and factorization-scale dependence of the truncated perturbative series. While in the case of Z b anti-b production the scale uncertainty of the total cross section is reduced by NLO QCD corrections, the W b anti-b production process at NLO in QCD still suffers from large scale uncertainties, in particular in the inclusive case. We also perform a detailed comparison with a calculation that considers massless bottom quarks, as implemented in the Monte Carlo program MCFM. The effects of a non-zero bottom-quark mass (m_b) cannot be neglected in phase-space regions where the relevant kinematic observable, such as the transverse momentum of the bottom quarks or the invariant mass of the bottom-quark pair, are of the order of m_b. The effects on the total production cross sections are usually smaller than the residual scale uncertainty at NLO in QCD.

NLO QCD corrections to Z b anti-b production with massive bottom quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron

We calculate the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) QCD corrections to Z b anti-b production in hadronic collisions including full bottom-quark mass effects. We present results for the total cross section and the invariant mass distribution of the bottom-quark jet pair at the Fermilab Tevatron p anti-p collider. We perform a detailed comparison with a calculation that considers massless bottom quarks, as implemented in the Monte Carlo program MCFM. We find that neglecting bottom-quark mass effects overestimates the total NLO QCD cross section for Z b anti-b production at the Tevatron by about 7%, independent of the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales. Moreover, bottom-quark mass effects can impact the shape of the bottom-quark pair invariant mass distribution, in particular in the low invariant mass region.
