Optimization of fluid mixing by reinforcement learning using limit cycles of a dynamical system

We propose a method to overcome the difficulties encountered when applying reinforcement learning to fluid mixing processes. The proposed method has two main features: (i) it does not require detailed measurements of the flow state, and (ii) by effectively exploiting a stable limit cycle of a two-dimensional dynamical system (the Li'enard system), it can stably perform optimization without imposing explicit constraints on the control parameters. As an illustrative example, we optimize a process in which a fluid contained in a cylindrical vessel is mixed by periodically rotating the vessel. The resulting optimal vessel motion is physically reasonable: it reverses its direction of rotation before a solid-body rotation state is established. Furthermore, even when the fluid viscosity increases with time during the mixing process, the method can continuously adapt the control parameters to the changing viscosity.

Relative velocity between a particle and turbulence

The relative velocity between a particle and the surrounding fluid is a key quantity that determines the various phenomena of particle-laden turbulence, such as particle clustering and turbulence modulation due to particles. We theoretically derive the expression for the relative velocity of a particle laden in turbulence by extending the argument of Balachandar (2009). This derivation provides a simplified form of the analytical model of Berk and Coletti (2024), and it makes the underlying physical assumptions explicit. Using direct numerical simulation data of turbulence in a periodic cube and turbulent channel flow, we demonstrate the validity of the derived expression, and show that it also holds for non-spherical particles and droplets.

Multifractal sets of coherent and incoherent vortices in turbulence

We numerically verify multifractal theory (Frisch and Parisi 1985) for turbulence using simulation data at a high Reynolds number. First, we propose a simple method to directly estimate the multifractal dimension $D(h)$ of vortical structures with a given Hölder exponent $h$. Thus measured $D(h)$ is in good agreement with indirectly measured experimental data. Then, we demonstrate that these structures for $h\ll1/3$ form the hierarchy of coherent eddies, while those for $h\gg1/3$ are featureless.

Thermal Hall effect in a phonon-glass Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$

A distinct thermal Hall signal is observed in a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$. The transverse thermal conduction shows a power-law temperature dependence below 40 K where a spin gap opens. We suggest that, through the very low longitudinal thermal conductivity and the thermal Hall signals, a phonon Hall effect is induced by strong phonon scatterings by orphan Cu$^{2+}$ spins formed in random domains of Cu$^{2+}$-Sb$^{5+}$ dumbbells.

Emergence of nontrivial magnetic excitations in a spin liquid state of kagome volborthite

When quantum fluctuations destroy underlying long-range ordered states, novel quantum states emerge. Spin-liquid (SL) states of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, in which highly-correlated spins keep to fluctuate down to very low temperatures, are prominent examples of such quantum states. SL states often exhibit exotic physical properties, but the precise nature of the elementary excitations behind such phenomena remains entirely elusive. Here we utilize thermal Hall measurements that can capture the unexplored property of the elementary excitations in SL states, and report on the observation of anomalous excitations that may unveil the unique features of the SL state. Our principal finding is a negative thermal Hall conductivity (k_xy) which the charge-neutral spin excitations in a gapless SL state of the two-dimensional kagome insulator volborthite Cu_3V_2O_7(OH)_2 \cdot 2H_2O exhibit, in much the same way in which charged electrons give rise to the conventional electric Hall effect. We find that k_xy is absent in the high-temperature paramagnetic state and develops upon entering the SL state in accordance with the growth of the short-range spin correlations, demonstrating that k_xy is a key signature of the elementary excitation formed in the SL state. These results suggest the emergence of nontrivial elementary excitations in the gapless SL state which feel the presence of fictitious magnetic flux, whose effective Lorentz force is found to be less than 1/100 of that experienced by free electrons.

Valence band electronic structure evolution of graphene oxide upon thermal annealing for optoelectronics

We report valence band electronic structure evolution of graphene oxide (GO) upon its thermal reduction. Degree of oxygen functionalization was controlled by annealing temperatures, and an electronic structure evolution was monitored using real-time ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. We observed a drastic increase in density of states around the Fermi level upon thermal annealing at ~600 oC. The result indicates that while there is an apparent band gap for GO prior to a thermal reduction, the gap closes after an annealing around that temperature. This trend of band gap closure was correlated with electrical, chemical, and structural properties to determine a set of GO material properties that is optimal for optoelectronics. The results revealed that annealing at a temperature of ~500 oC leads to the desired properties, demonstrated by a uniform and an order of magnitude enhanced photocurrent map of an individual GO sheet compared to as-synthesized counterpart.
