The Fate of Information Localizability and Holography in Quantum Gravity

The AdS/CFT correspondence states an equivalence between a quantum gravitational theory in a (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS$_{d+1}$) and a d-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT$_{d}$). The CFT$_{d}$ lives on the asymptotic boundary of the bulk AdS$_{d+1}$. Hence a local operator in the bulk of the AdS$_{d+1}$ should be reconstructable using operators living on the asymptotic boundary at the same instant. The existence of such a reconstruction is highly nontrivial and is conceptually puzzling if we think in terms of physically detecting a local bulk particle from the boundary of the AdS$_{d+1}$, as this signals a non-local information encoding scheme. In this paper, we explore situations where such non-locally encoded information can be observed in semiclassical gravity. We study examples where it is more efficient to utilize such effects in quantum gravity to detect a bulk excitation than to wait for signals to reach the boundary. Furthermore, we provide exemplified situations for which the protocol fails, and the non-locality of information is suppressed. These exemplified scenarios can be taken as explicit examples of the emergence of a perturbatively localized observer. In such cases, holography cannot be proven at the perturbative level in Newton's constant $G_{N}$ via the non-localizability of information.

Long-range wormhole teleportation

We extend the protocol of Gao and Jafferis arXiv:1911.07416 to allow wormhole teleportation between two entangled copies of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model communicating only through a classical channel. We demonstrate in finite $N$ simulations that the protocol exhibits the characteristic holographic features of wormhole teleportation discussed and summarized in Jafferis et al. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05424-3 . We review and exhibit in detail how these holographic features relate to size winding which, as first shown by Brown et al. arXiv:1911.06314 and Nezami et al. arXiv:2102.01064, encodes a dual description of wormhole teleportation.

Comment on "Comment on "Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor" "

We observe that the comment of [1, arXiv:2302.07897] is consistent with [2] on key points: i) the microscopic mechanism of the experimentally observed teleportation is size winding and ii) the system thermalizes and scrambles at the time of teleportation. These properties are consistent with a gravitational interpretation of the teleportation dynamics, as opposed to the late-time dynamics. The objections of [1] concern counterfactual scenarios outside of the experimentally implemented protocol.

On Upper Bounds in Dimension Gaps of CFT's

We consider CFT's arising from branes probing singularities of internal manifolds. We focus on holographic models with internal space including arbtirary Sasaki-Einstein manifolds coming from CY as well as arbitrary sphere quotients. In all these cases we show that there is a universal upper bound (depending only on the spacetime dimension) for the conformal dimension of the first non-trivial spin 2 operator in the dual CFT and a minimal diameter (in AdS units) for the internal space of the holographic dual and conjecture it holds for all CFT's.

The Factorization Problem in Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity

In this note we study the $1+1$ dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in Lorentzian signature, explicitly constructing the gauge-invariant classical phase space and the quantum Hilbert space and Hamiltonian. We also semiclassically compute the Hartle-Hawking wave function in two different bases of this Hilbert space. We then use these results to illustrate the gravitational version of the factorization problem of AdS/CFT: the Hilbert space of the two-boundary system tensor-factorizes on the CFT side, which appears to be in tension with the existence of gauge constraints in the bulk. In this model the tension is acute: we argue that JT gravity is a sensible quantum theory, based on a well-defined Lorentzian bulk path integral, which has no CFT dual. In bulk language, it has wormholes but it does not have black hole microstates. It does however give some hint as to what could be added to to rectify these issues, and we give an example of how this works using the SYK model. Finally we suggest that similar comments should apply to pure Einstein gravity in $2+1$ dimensions, which we'd then conclude also cannot have a CFT dual, consistent with the results of Maloney and Witten.

Conformal Bootstrap At Large Charge

We consider unitary CFTs with continuous global symmetries in $d>2$. We consider a state created by the lightest operator of large charge $Q \gg 1$ and analyze the correlator of two light charged operators in this state. We assume that the correlator admits a well-defined large $Q$ expansion and, relatedly, that the macroscopic (thermodynamic) limit of the correlator exists. We find that the crossing equations admit a consistent truncation, where only a finite number $N$ of Regge trajectories contribute to the correlator at leading nontrivial order. We classify all such truncated solutions to the crossing. For one Regge trajectory $N=1$, the solution is unique and given by the effective field theory of a Goldstone mode. For two or more Regge trajectories $N \geq 2$, the solutions are encoded in roots of a certain degree $N$ polynomial. Some of the solutions admit a simple weakly coupled EFT description, whereas others do not. In the weakly coupled case, each Regge trajectory corresponds to a field in the effective Lagrangian.

A Duality Appetizer

We propose that the three-dimensional N=2 SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level 1 coupled to an adjoint chiral multiplet with no superpotential is equivalent to the free field theory consisting of a single massless N=2 chiral multiplet. In particular, we show that the two theories have the identical "Z-function" and identical superconformal index.

Massive type IIA string theory cannot be strongly coupled

Understanding the strong coupling limit of massive type IIA string theory is a longstanding problem. We argue that perhaps this problem does not exist; namely, there may be no strongly coupled solutions of the massive theory. We show explicitly that massive type IIA string theory can never be strongly coupled in a weakly curved region of space-time. We illustrate our general claim with two classes of massive solutions in AdS4xCP3: one, previously known, with N = 1 supersymmetry, and a new one with N = 2 supersymmetry. Both solutions are dual to d = 3 Chern-Simons-matter theories. In both these massive examples, as the rank N of the gauge group is increased, the dilaton initially increases in the same way as in the corresponding massless case; before it can reach the M-theory regime, however, it enters a second regime, in which the dilaton decreases even as N increases. In the N = 2 case, we find supersymmetry-preserving gauge-invariant monopole operators whose mass is independent of N. This predicts the existence of branes which stay light even when the dilaton decreases. We show that, on the gravity side, these states originate from D2-D0 bound states wrapping the vanishing two-cycle of a conifold singularity that develops at large N.

Crystals and intersecting branes

We show that the index of BPS bound states of D4, D2 and D0 branes in IIA theory compactified on a toric Calabi Yau are encoded in the combinatoric counting of restricted three dimensional partitions. Using the torus symmetry, we demonstrate that the Euler character of the moduli space of bound states localizes to the number of invariant configurations that can be obtained by gluing D0 bound states in the C^3 vertex along the D2 brane wrapped P^1 legs of the toric diagram. We obtain a geometric realization of these configurations as a crystal associated to the extra bound states of D0 branes at the singular points of a single D4 brane wrapping a high degree equivariant surface that carries the total D4 charge. We reproduce some known examples of the partition function computed in the opposite regime where D0 and D2 charge are dissolved into D4 flux, as well as significantly generalize these results. The crystal representation of the BPS bound states provides a direct realization of the OSV relation to the square of the topological string partition function, which in toric Calabi Yau is also described by a theory of three dimensional partitions.

A DK Phase Transition in q-Deformed Yang-Mills on S^2 and Topological Strings

We demonstate the existence of a large $N$ phase transition with respect to the 't Hooft coupling in q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on $S^2$. The strong coupling phase is characterized by the formation of a clump of eigenvalues in the associated matrix model of Douglas-Kazakov (DK) type (hep-th/9305047). By understanding this in terms of instanton contributions to the q-deformed Yang-Mills theory, we gain some insight into the strong coupling phase as well as probe the phase diagram at nonzero values of the $θ$ angle. The Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa relation (hep-th/0405146) of this theory to topological strings on the local Calabi-Yau $\mathcal{O}(-p) \oplus \mathcal{O}(p-2) \to \mathbb{P}^1$ via a chiral decompostion at large $N$ hep-th/0411280, motivates us to investigate the phase structure of the trivial chiral block, which corresponds to the topological string partition function, for $p>2$. We find a phase transition at a different value of the coupling than in the full theory, indicating the likely presence of a rich phase structure in the sum over chiral blocks.
