Efficient Unbiased Sparsification

An unbiased $m$-sparsification of a vector $p\in \mathbb{R}^n$ is a random vector $Q\in \mathbb{R}^n$ with mean $p$ that has at most $m<n$ nonzero coordinates. Unbiased sparsification compresses the original vector without introducing bias; it arises in various contexts, such as in federated learning and sampling sparse probability distributions. Ideally, unbiased sparsification should also minimize the expected value of a divergence function $\mathsf{Div}(Q,p)$ that measures how far away $Q$ is from the original $p$. If $Q$ is optimal in this sense, then we call it efficient. Our main results describe efficient unbiased sparsifications for divergences that are either permutation-invariant or additively separable. Surprisingly, the characterization for permutation-invariant divergences is robust to the choice of divergence function, in the sense that our class of optimal $Q$ for squared Euclidean distance coincides with our class of optimal $Q$ for Kullback-Leibler divergence, or indeed any of a wide variety of divergences.

Maximal determinants of sparse zero-one matrices

We give upper bounds for the determinant of an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix containing $kn$ ones for integral $k$. Our results improve upon a result of Ryser for $k=o(n^{1/3})$. For fixed $k\ge 3$ it was an open question whether Hadamard's inequality could be exponentially improved. We answer this in the affirmative. Our results stem from studying matrices with row sums $k$ and bounding their Gram determinants. Our technique allows us to give upper bounds when these matrices are perturbed.

Explicit constructions of infinite families of MSTD sets

We explicitly construct infinite families of MSTD (more sums than differences) sets. There are enough of these sets to prove that there exists a constant C such that at least C / r^4 of the 2^r subsets of {1,...,r} are MSTD sets; thus our family is significantly denser than previous constructions (whose densities are at most f(r)/2^{r/2} for some polynomial f(r)). We conclude by generalizing our method to compare linear forms epsilon_1 A + ... + epsilon_n A with epsilon_i in {-1,1}.
