Four fermion soft emission in QCD hard scattering

We consider the radiation of two distinguishable soft quark-antiquark pairs ($\mathrm{q}\bar{\mathrm{q}}\mathrm{Q}\bar{\mathrm{Q}}$) in a generic process for multiparton hard scattering in QCD. We evaluate the corresponding soft current at tree level in terms of an independent-emission contribution and an irreducible correlation component, which includes strictly non-abelian terms and also terms with an abelian character. The squared current for soft $\mathrm{q}\bar{\mathrm{q}}\mathrm{Q}\bar{\mathrm{Q}}$ emission produces colour dipole and colour tripole interactions between the hard-scattering partons, with structures similar to soft gluon-quark-antiquark emission. The colour tripole interactions are odd under charge conjugation and lead to charge asymmetry effects. We extend our analysis by including QED interactions, the emission of two distinguishable soft lepton-antilepton pairs, and mixed quark-antiquark-lepton-antilepton soft emission.

Small $x$ resummation of photon impact factors and the $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ high energy scattering

I present the renormalization group improved collinear resummation of the photon-gluon impact factors. We construct the resummed cross section for virtual photon-photon ($\gamma^*\gamma^*$) scattering which incorporates the impact factors and BFKL gluon Green's function up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in energy. The impact factors include important kinematical effects which are responsible for the most singular poles in Mellin space at next-to-leading order. Further conditions on the resummed cross section are obtained by requiring the consistency with the collinear limits. Our analysis is consistent with previous impact factor calculations at NLO, apart from a new term proportional to $C_F$ that we find for the longitudinal polarization. Finally, we use the resummed cross section to compare with the LEP data on the $\gamma^*\gamma^*$ cross section and with previous calculations. The resummed result is lower than the leading logarithmic approximation but higher than the pure next-to-leading one, and is consistent with the experimental data.

Electroweak Evolution Equations and Isospin Conservation

In processes taking place at energies much higher than the weak scale, electroweak corrections can be taken into account by using electroweak evolution equations, that are analogous to the DGLAP equations in QCD. We show that weak isospin conservation in these equations imposes to modify the expressions of the splitting functions commonly used in the literature. These modifications have a profound impact on the parton distribution functions.

First computation of Mueller Tang processes using the full NLL BFKL approach

We present the full next-to-leading order (NLO) prediction for the jet-gap-jet cross section at the LHC within the BFKL approach. We implement, for the first time, the NLO impact factors in the calculation of the cross section. We provide results for differential cross sections as a function of the difference in rapidity and azimuthal angle betwen the two jets and the second leading jet transverse momentum. The NLO corrections of the impact factors induce an overall reduction of the cross section with respect to the corresponding predictions with only LO impact factors. We note that NLO impact factors feature a logarithmic dependence of the cross section on the total center of mass energy which formally violates BFKL factorization. We show that such term is one order of magnitude smaller than the total contribution, and thus can be safely included in the current prediction without a need of further resummation of such logarithmic terms. Fixing the renormalization scale $\mu_R$ according to the principle of minimal sensitivity, suggests $\mu_R$ about 4 times the sum of the transverse jet energies and provides smaller theroretical uncertainties with respect to the leading order case.

Soft gluon-quark-antiquark emission in QCD hard scattering

We consider the radiation of a soft gluon ($g$) and a soft quark-antiquark ($q{\bar q}$) pair in QCD hard scattering. In the soft limit the scattering amplitude has a singular behaviour that is factorized and controlled by a soft current, which has a process-independent structure in colour space. We evaluate the soft $gq{\bar q}$ current at the tree level for an arbitrary multiparton scattering process. The irreducible correlation component of the current includes strictly non-abelian terms and also terms with an abelian character. Analogous abelian correlations appear for soft photon-lepton-antilepton emission in QED. The squared current for soft $gq{\bar q}$ emission produces colour dipole and colour tripole interactions between the hard-scattering partons. The colour tripole interactions are odd under charge conjugation and lead to charge asymmetry effects. We consider the specific applications to processes with two and three hard partons, and we discuss the structure of the corresponding charge asymmetry contributions. We also generalize our QCD results to the cases of QED and mixed QCD$\times$QED radiative corrections.

Triple (and quadruple) soft-gluon radiation in QCD hard scattering

We consider the radiation of three soft gluons in a generic process for multiparton hard scattering in QCD. In the soft limit the corresponding scattering amplitude has a singular behaviour that is factorized and controlled by a colorful soft current. We compute the tree-level current for triple soft-gluon emission from both massless and massive hard partons. The three-gluon current is expressed in terms of maximally non-abelian irreducible correlations. We compute the soft behaviour of squared amplitudes and the colour correlations produced by the squared current. The radiation of one and two soft gluons leads to colour dipole correlations. Triple soft-gluon radiation produces in addition colour quadrupole correlations between the hard partons. We examine the soft and collinear singularities of the squared current in various energy ordered and angular ordered regions. We discuss some features of soft radiation to all-loop orders for processes with two and three hard partons. Considering triple soft-gluon radiation from three hard partons, colour quadrupole interactions break the Casimir scaling symmetry between quarks and gluons. We also present some results on the radiation of four soft gluons from two hard partons, and we discuss the colour monster contribution and its relation with the violation (and generalization) of Casimir scaling. We also compute the first correction of $(1/N_c^2)$ to the eikonal formula for multiple soft-gluon radiation with strong energy ordering from two hard gluons.

Is BFKL factorization valid for Mueller-Tang jets?

The perturbative QCD description of high-energy hadroproduction of two hard jets separated by a large rapidity gap void of emission (also called Mueller-Tang jets) is based on a factorization formula of BFKL type that represents exchanges of colour-singlet objects among the external particles. This formula resums to all perturbative orders a certain class of Feynman diagrams that are supposed to dominate the cross-section in the Regge limit. However, the explicit calculations at next-to-leading logarithmic order questions the validity of such factorization when an IR safe jet algorithm is used to reconstruct jets. We show the origin of such violation of factorization, and quantify its impact for LHC phenomenology. In this connection, we estimate the impact of other contributions to the cross-section that are not included in the Mueller-Tang factorization formula -- colour non-singlet exchanges -- that, at low rapidity separation, compete with the singlet ones.

Asymptotic symmetries and subleading soft graviton theorem in higher dimensions

We investigate the relation between the subleading soft graviton theorem and asymptotic symmetries in gravity in even dimensions $d=2+2m$ higher than four. After rewriting the subleading soft graviton theorem as a Ward identity, we argue that the charges of such identity generate Diff$(S^{2m})$. In order to show that, we propose suitable commutation relation among certain components of the metric fields. As a result, all Diff$(S^{2m})$ transformations are symmetries of gravitational scattering.

Infrared features of gravitational scattering and radiation in the eikonal approach

Following a semi-classical eikonal approach --- justified at transplanckian energies order by order in the deflection angle $\Theta_s\sim\frac{4G\sqrt{s}}{b} \equiv \frac{2 R}{b}$ --- we investigate the infrared features of gravitational scattering and radiation in four space-time dimensions, and we illustrate the factorization and cancellation of the infinite Coulomb phase for scattering and the eikonal resummation for radiation. As a consequence, both the eikonal phase $2\delta(E,b)$ and the gravitational-wave (GW) spectrum $\frac{\mathrm{d}E^{GW}}{\mathrm{d}\omega}$ are free from infrared problems in a frequency region extending from zero to (and possibly beyond) $\omega =1/R$. The infrared-singular behavior of $4$-D gravity leaves a memory in the deep infrared region ($\omega R \ll \omega b < 1$) of the spectrum. At $\mathcal{O}(\omega b)$ we confirm the presence of logarithmic enhancements of the form already pointed out by Sen and collaborators on the basis of non leading corrections to soft-graviton theorems. These, however, do not contribute to the unpolarized and/or azimuthally-averaged flux. At $\mathcal{O}(\omega^2 b^2)$ we find instead a positive logarithmically-enhanced correction to the total flux implying an unexpected maximum of its spectrum at $\omega b \sim 0.5$. At higher orders we find subleading enhanced contributions as well, which can be resummed, and have the interpretation of a finite rescattering Coulomb phase of emitted gravitons.

Improved theoretical description of Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC

We present a method for improving the phenomenological description of Mueller-Navelet jets at LHC, which is based on matching the BFKL resummation with fixed order calculations. We point out the need of a consistent identification of jets between experimental measurements and theoretical descriptions. We hope as well to motivate an extensive analysis of MN jets at LHC in run 2.

Radiation enhancement and "temperature" in the collapse regime of gravitational scattering

We generalize the semiclassical treatment of graviton radiation to gravitational scattering at very large energies $\sqrt{s}\gg m_P$ and finite scattering angles $\Theta_s$, so as to approach the collapse regime of impact parameters $b \simeq b_c \sim R\equiv 2G\sqrt{s}$. Our basic tool is the extension of the recently proposed, unified form of radiation to the ACV reduced-action model and to its resummed-eikonal exchange. By superimposing that radiation all-over eikonal scattering, we are able to derive the corresponding (unitary) coherent-state operator. The resulting graviton spectrum, tuned on the gravitational radius $R$, fully agrees with previous calculations for small angles $\Theta_s\ll 1$ but, for sizeable angles $\Theta_s(b)\leq \Theta_c = O(1)$ acquires an exponential cutoff of the large $\omega R$ region, due to energy conservation, so as to emit a finite fraction of the total energy. In the approach-to-collapse regime of $b\to b_c^+$ we find a radiation enhancement due to large tidal forces, so that the whole energy is radiated off, with a large multiplicity $\langle N \rangle\sim Gs \gg 1$ and a well-defined frequency cutoff of order $R^{-1}$. The latter corresponds to the Hawking temperature for a black hole of mass notably smaller than $\sqrt{s}$.

Unitarity restoring graviton radiation in the collapse regime of scattering

We investigate graviton radiation in gravitational scattering at small impact parameters $b b$, so as to suggest a possible completion of the unitarity sum. In fact, such energy radiation at large distances turns out to compensate and to gradually reduce to nothing the amount of energy $E'$ being trapped at small-$b$'s, by thus avoiding the quantum tunneling suppression of the elastic scattering and suggesting a unitary evolution. We finally look at the coherent radiation sample so obtained and we find that, by energy conservation, it develops an exponential frequency damping corresponding to a "quasi-temperature" of order $\hbar/R$, which is naturally related to a Hawking radiation and is suggestive of a black-hole signal at quantum level.

Unified limiting form of graviton radiation at extreme energies

We derive the limiting form of graviton radiation in gravitational scattering at transplanckian energies ($E\gg M_P$) and small deflection angles. We show that --- owing to the graviton's spin 2 --- such limiting form unifies the soft- and Regge- regimes of emission, by covering a broad angular range, from forward fragmentation to deeply central region. The single-exchange emission amplitudes have a nice expression in terms of the transformation phases of helicity amplitudes under rotations. As a result, the multiple-exchange emission amplitudes can be resummed via an impact parameter $b$-space factorization theorem that takes into account all coherence effects. We then see the emergence of an energy spectrum of the emitted radiation which, being tuned on $\hbar/R \sim M_P^2/E \ll M_P$, is reminiscent of Hawking's radiation. Such a spectrum is much softer than the one na\"ively expected for increasing input energies and neatly solves a potential energy crisis. Furthermore, by including rescattering corrections in the (quantum) factorization formula, we are able to recover the classical limit and to find the corresponding quantum corrections. Perspectives for the extrapolation of such limiting radiation towards the classical collapse regime (where $b$ is of the order of the gravitational radius $R$) are also discussed.

Emerging Hawking-like Radiation from Gravitational Bremsstrahlung Beyond the Planck Scale

We argue that, as a consequence of the graviton's spin-2, its bremsstrahlung in trans-planckian-energy ($E\gg M_P$) gravitational scattering at small deflection angle can be nicely expressed in terms of helicity-transformation phases and their transfer within the scattering process. The resulting spectrum exhibits deeply sub-planckian characteristic energies of order $M_P^2/E \ll M_P$ (reminiscent of Hawking radiation), a suppressed fragmentation region, and a reduced rapidity plateau, in broad agreement with recent classical estimates.
