A prediction-correction based iterative convolution-thresholding method for topology optimization of heat transfer problems

In this paper, we propose an iterative convolution-thresholding method (ICTM) based on prediction-correction for solving the topology optimization problem in steady-state heat transfer equations. The problem is formulated as a constrained minimization problem of the complementary energy, incorporating a perimeter/surface-area regularization term, while satisfying a steady-state heat transfer equation. The decision variables of the optimization problem represent the domains of different materials and are represented by indicator functions. The perimeter/surface-area term of the domain is approximated using Gaussian kernel convolution with indicator functions. In each iteration, the indicator function is updated using a prediction-correction approach. The prediction step is based on the variation of the objective functional by imposing the constraints, while the correction step ensures the monotonically decreasing behavior of the objective functional. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our proposed method, particularly when compared to classical approaches based on the ICTM.

The Security Analysis of Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution under Limited Eavesdropping with Practical Fiber

Research on optimal eavesdropping models under practical conditions will help to evaluate realistic risk when employing quantum key distribution (QKD) system for secure information transmission. Intuitively, fiber loss will lead to the optical energy leaking to the environment, rather than harvested by the eavesdropper, which also limits the eavesdropping ability while improving the QKD system performance in practical use. However, defining the optimal eavesdropping model in the presence of lossy fiber is difficult because the channel is beyond the control of legitimate partners and the leaked signal is undetectable. Here we investigate how the fiber loss influences the eavesdropping ability based on a teleportation-based collective attack model which requires two distant stations and a shared entanglement source. We find that if the distributed entanglement is limited due to the practical loss, the optimal attack occurs when the two teleportation stations are merged to one and placed close to the transmitter site, which performs similar to the entangling-cloning attack but with a reduced wiretapping ratio. Assuming Eve uses the best available hollow-core fiber, the secret key rate in the practical environment can be 20%~40% higher than that under ideal eavesdropping. While if the entanglement distillation technology is mature enough to provide high quality of distributed entanglement, the two teleportation stations should be distantly separated for better eavesdropping performance, where the eavesdropping can even approach the optimal collective attack. Under the current level of entanglement purification technology, the unavoidable fiber loss can still greatly limit the eavesdropping ability as well as enhance the secret key rate and transmission distance of the realistic system, which promotes the development of QKD systems in practical application scenarios.

RL-MPCA: A Reinforcement Learning Based Multi-Phase Computation Allocation Approach for Recommender Systems

Recommender systems aim to recommend the most suitable items to users from a large number of candidates. Their computation cost grows as the number of user requests and the complexity of services (or models) increases. Under the limitation of computation resources (CRs), how to make a trade-off between computation cost and business revenue becomes an essential question. The existing studies focus on dynamically allocating CRs in queue truncation scenarios (i.e., allocating the size of candidates), and formulate the CR allocation problem as an optimization problem with constraints. Some of them focus on single-phase CR allocation, and others focus on multi-phase CR allocation but introduce some assumptions about queue truncation scenarios. However, these assumptions do not hold in other scenarios, such as retrieval channel selection and prediction model selection. Moreover, existing studies ignore the state transition process of requests between different phases, limiting the effectiveness of their approaches. This paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based Multi-Phase Computation Allocation approach (RL-MPCA), which aims to maximize the total business revenue under the limitation of CRs. RL-MPCA formulates the CR allocation problem as a Weakly Coupled MDP problem and solves it with an RL-based approach. Specifically, RL-MPCA designs a novel deep Q-network to adapt to various CR allocation scenarios, and calibrates the Q-value by introducing multiple adaptive Lagrange multipliers (adaptive-$λ$) to avoid violating the global CR constraints. Finally, experiments on the offline simulation environment and online real-world recommender system validate the effectiveness of our approach.

Hard edge universality of Muttalib-Borodin ensembles with real parameter $θ$

We analyse the hard edge limit of the Muttalib-Borodin ensembles with general potential, and show that the limiting correlation kernel found in the ensemble with linear potential is universal. We also prove the Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotics of the biorthogonal polynomials associated to the Muttalib-Borodin ensembles around zero, where the limits are given by Wright's generalized Bessel functions. To accomplish these results, we implement the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method on the vector Riemann-Hilbert problems for the biorthogonal polynomials, and develop a new method to construct the hard edge local parametrix at zero. The results in this paper are valid for all real parameter $θ> 0$ in the Muttalib-Borodin ensembles, and this paper generalizes [Wang-Zhang21] that considers only the integer $θ$ case.

Calibration-free quantitative phase imaging in multi-core fiber endoscopes using end-to-end deep learning

Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) through multi-core fibers (MCFs) has been an emerging in vivo label-free endoscopic imaging modality with minimal invasiveness. However, the computational demands of conventional iterative phase retrieval algorithms have limited their real-time imaging potential. We demonstrate a learning-based MCF phase imaging method, that significantly reduced the phase reconstruction time to 5.5 ms, enabling video-rate imaging at 181 fps. Moreover, we introduce an innovative optical system that automatically generated the first open-source dataset tailored for MCF phase imaging, comprising 50,176 paired speckle and phase images. Our trained deep neural network (DNN) demonstrates robust phase reconstruction performance in experiments with a mean fidelity of up to 99.8\%. Such an efficient fiber phase imaging approach can broaden the applications of QPI in hard-to-reach areas.

X4D-SceneFormer: Enhanced Scene Understanding on 4D Point Cloud Videos through Cross-modal Knowledge Transfer

The field of 4D point cloud understanding is rapidly developing with the goal of analyzing dynamic 3D point cloud sequences. However, it remains a challenging task due to the sparsity and lack of texture in point clouds. Moreover, the irregularity of point cloud poses a difficulty in aligning temporal information within video sequences. To address these issues, we propose a novel cross-modal knowledge transfer framework, called X4D-SceneFormer. This framework enhances 4D-Scene understanding by transferring texture priors from RGB sequences using a Transformer architecture with temporal relationship mining. Specifically, the framework is designed with a dual-branch architecture, consisting of an 4D point cloud transformer and a Gradient-aware Image Transformer (GIT). During training, we employ multiple knowledge transfer techniques, including temporal consistency losses and masked self-attention, to strengthen the knowledge transfer between modalities. This leads to enhanced performance during inference using single-modal 4D point cloud inputs. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our framework on various 4D point cloud video understanding tasks, including action recognition, action segmentation and semantic segmentation. The results achieve 1st places, i.e., 85.3% (+7.9%) accuracy and 47.3% (+5.0%) mIoU for 4D action segmentation and semantic segmentation, on the HOI4D challenge\footnote{\url{http://www.hoi4d.top/}.}, outperforming previous state-of-the-art by a large margin. ViewRefer: Grasp the Multi-view Knowledge for 3D Visual Grounding with GPT and Prototype Guidance

Understanding 3D scenes from multi-view inputs has been proven to alleviate the view discrepancy issue in 3D visual grounding. However, existing methods normally neglect the view cues embedded in the text modality and fail to weigh the relative importance of different views. In this paper, we propose ViewRefer, a multi-view framework for 3D visual grounding exploring how to grasp the view knowledge from both text and 3D modalities. For the text branch, ViewRefer leverages the diverse linguistic knowledge of large-scale language models, e.g., GPT, to expand a single grounding text to multiple geometry-consistent descriptions. Meanwhile, in the 3D modality, a transformer fusion module with inter-view attention is introduced to boost the interaction of objects across views. On top of that, we further present a set of learnable multi-view prototypes, which memorize scene-agnostic knowledge for different views, and enhance the framework from two perspectives: a view-guided attention module for more robust text features, and a view-guided scoring strategy during the final prediction. With our designed paradigm, ViewRefer achieves superior performance on three benchmarks and surpasses the second-best by +2.8%, +1.5%, and +1.35% on Sr3D, Nr3D, and ScanRefer. Code is released at https://github.com/Ivan-Tang-3D/ViewRefer3D.

Intelligent Virtual Assistants with LLM-based Process Automation

While intelligent virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant have become ubiquitous in modern life, they still face limitations in their ability to follow multi-step instructions and accomplish complex goals articulated in natural language. However, recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) show promise for overcoming existing barriers by enhancing natural language processing and reasoning capabilities. Though promising, applying LLMs to create more advanced virtual assistants still faces challenges like ensuring robust performance and handling variability in real-world user commands. This paper proposes a novel LLM-based virtual assistant that can automatically perform multi-step operations within mobile apps based on high-level user requests. The system represents an advance in assistants by providing an end-to-end solution for parsing instructions, reasoning about goals, and executing actions. LLM-based Process Automation (LLMPA) has modules for decomposing instructions, generating descriptions, detecting interface elements, predicting next actions, and error checking. Experiments demonstrate the system completing complex mobile operation tasks in Alipay based on natural language instructions. This showcases how large language models can enable automated assistants to accomplish real-world tasks. The main contributions are the novel LLMPA architecture optimized for app process automation, the methodology for applying LLMs to mobile apps, and demonstrations of multi-step task completion in a real-world environment. Notably, this work represents the first real-world deployment and extensive evaluation of a large language model-based virtual assistant in a widely used mobile application with an enormous user base numbering in the hundreds of millions.

Page Curves in Holographic Superconductors

Considering a doubly holographic model, we study the black hole information paradox for the eternal AdSd-RN black hole coupled to and in equilibrium with a d-dimensional conformal bath whose state has been deformed by the charged scalar field coupled to a U(1) gauge field. Without a brane, the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the gauge field on boundary systems can induce a second-order phase transition of the charged scalar field at the critical temperature, known as holographic superconductors. The bath deformation can significantly change its entanglement dynamics with the black hole, resulting in variations in the Page curve and Page time. Our results indicate that characteristic parameters of the Page curve, such as entanglement velocity, initial area difference and Page time, can be used as suitable probes to detect superconducting phase transitions. In particular, the entanglement velocity can also probe both Kasner flows and Josephson oscillations. When keeping the endpoint of the radiation region fixed at twice the critical Page point, the entanglement velocity (the internal backreaction) has a more significant influence on the Page time compared to the initial area difference (the external backreaction).

Linear Recurrent Units for Sequential Recommendation

State-of-the-art sequential recommendation relies heavily on self-attention-based recommender models. Yet such models are computationally expensive and often too slow for real-time recommendation. Furthermore, the self-attention operation is performed at a sequence-level, thereby making low-cost incremental inference challenging. Inspired by recent advances in efficient language modeling, we propose linear recurrent units for sequential recommendation (LRURec). Similar to recurrent neural networks, LRURec offers rapid inference and can achieve incremental inference on sequential inputs. By decomposing the linear recurrence operation and designing recursive parallelization in our framework, LRURec provides the additional benefits of reduced model size and parallelizable training. Moreover, we optimize the architecture of LRURec by implementing a series of modifications to address the lack of non-linearity and improve training dynamics. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed LRURec, we conduct extensive experiments on multiple real-world datasets and compare its performance against state-of-the-art sequential recommenders. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of LRURec, which consistently outperforms baselines by a significant margin. Results also highlight the efficiency of LRURec with our parallelized training paradigm and fast inference on long sequences, showing its potential to further enhance user experience in sequential recommendation.

Analysis and Applications of Deep Learning with Finite Samples in Full Life-Cycle Intelligence of Nuclear Power Generation

The advent of Industry 4.0 has precipitated the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods within industrial contexts, aiming to realize intelligent manufacturing, operation as well as maintenance, also known as industrial intelligence. However, intricate industrial milieus, particularly those relating to energy exploration and production, frequently encompass data characterized by long-tailed class distribution, sample imbalance, and domain shift. These attributes pose noteworthy challenges to data-centric Deep Learning (DL) techniques, crucial for the realization of industrial intelligence. The present study centers on the intricate and distinctive industrial scenarios of Nuclear Power Generation (NPG), meticulously scrutinizing the application of DL techniques under the constraints of finite data samples. Initially, the paper expounds on potential employment scenarios for AI across the full life-cycle of NPG. Subsequently, we delve into an evaluative exposition of DL's advancement, grounded in the finite sample perspective. This encompasses aspects such as small-sample learning, few-shot learning, zero-shot learning, and open-set recognition, also referring to the unique data characteristics of NPG. The paper then proceeds to present two specific case studies. The first revolves around the automatic recognition of zirconium alloy metallography, while the second pertains to open-set recognition for signal diagnosis of machinery sensors. These cases, spanning the entirety of NPG's life-cycle, are accompanied by constructive outcomes and insightful deliberations. By exploring and applying DL methodologies within the constraints of finite sample availability, this paper not only furnishes a robust technical foundation but also introduces a fresh perspective toward the secure and efficient advancement and exploitation of this advanced energy source.

Affordance-Driven Next-Best-View Planning for Robotic Grasping

Grasping occluded objects in cluttered environments is an essential component in complex robotic manipulation tasks. In this paper, we introduce an AffordanCE-driven Next-Best-View planning policy (ACE-NBV) that tries to find a feasible grasp for target object via continuously observing scenes from new viewpoints. This policy is motivated by the observation that the grasp affordances of an occluded object can be better-measured under the view when the view-direction are the same as the grasp view. Specifically, our method leverages the paradigm of novel view imagery to predict the grasps affordances under previously unobserved view, and select next observation view based on the highest imagined grasp quality of the target object. The experimental results in simulation and on a real robot demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed affordance-driven next-best-view planning policy. Project page: https://sszxc.net/ace-nbv/.

LlamaRec: Two-Stage Recommendation using Large Language Models for Ranking

Recently, large language models (LLMs) have exhibited significant progress in language understanding and generation. By leveraging textual features, customized LLMs are also applied for recommendation and demonstrate improvements across diverse recommendation scenarios. Yet the majority of existing methods perform training-free recommendation that heavily relies on pretrained knowledge (e.g., movie recommendation). In addition, inference on LLMs is slow due to autoregressive generation, rendering existing methods less effective for real-time recommendation. As such, we propose a two-stage framework using large language models for ranking-based recommendation (LlamaRec). In particular, we use small-scale sequential recommenders to retrieve candidates based on the user interaction history. Then, both history and retrieved items are fed to the LLM in text via a carefully designed prompt template. Instead of generating next-item titles, we adopt a verbalizer-based approach that transforms output logits into probability distributions over the candidate items. Therefore, the proposed LlamaRec can efficiently rank items without generating long text. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we compare against state-of-the-art baseline methods on benchmark datasets. Our experimental results demonstrate the performance of LlamaRec, which consistently achieves superior performance in both recommendation performance and efficiency.

Cross-Domain Policy Adaptation via Value-Guided Data Filtering

Generalizing policies across different domains with dynamics mismatch poses a significant challenge in reinforcement learning. For example, a robot learns the policy in a simulator, but when it is deployed in the real world, the dynamics of the environment may be different. Given the source and target domain with dynamics mismatch, we consider the online dynamics adaptation problem, in which case the agent can access sufficient source domain data while online interactions with the target domain are limited. Existing research has attempted to solve the problem from the dynamics discrepancy perspective. In this work, we reveal the limitations of these methods and explore the problem from the value difference perspective via a novel insight on the value consistency across domains. Specifically, we present the Value-Guided Data Filtering (VGDF) algorithm, which selectively shares transitions from the source domain based on the proximity of paired value targets across the two domains. Empirical results on various environments with kinematic and morphology shifts demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance compared to prior approaches.

Diffusion Model is an Effective Planner and Data Synthesizer for Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning

Diffusion models have demonstrated highly-expressive generative capabilities in vision and NLP. Recent studies in reinforcement learning (RL) have shown that diffusion models are also powerful in modeling complex policies or trajectories in offline datasets. However, these works have been limited to single-task settings where a generalist agent capable of addressing multi-task predicaments is absent. In this paper, we aim to investigate the effectiveness of a single diffusion model in modeling large-scale multi-task offline data, which can be challenging due to diverse and multimodal data distribution. Specifically, we propose Multi-Task Diffusion Model (\textsc{MTDiff}), a diffusion-based method that incorporates Transformer backbones and prompt learning for generative planning and data synthesis in multi-task offline settings. \textsc{MTDiff} leverages vast amounts of knowledge available in multi-task data and performs implicit knowledge sharing among tasks. For generative planning, we find \textsc{MTDiff} outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms across 50 tasks on Meta-World and 8 maps on Maze2D. For data synthesis, \textsc{MTDiff} generates high-quality data for testing tasks given a single demonstration as a prompt, which enhances the low-quality datasets for even unseen tasks.

A Glance is Enough: Extract Target Sentence By Looking at A keyword

This paper investigates the possibility of extracting a target sentence from multi-talker speech using only a keyword as input. For example, in social security applications, the keyword might be "help", and the goal is to identify what the person who called for help is articulating while ignoring other speakers. To address this problem, we propose using the Transformer architecture to embed both the keyword and the speech utterance and then rely on the cross-attention mechanism to select the correct content from the concatenated or overlapping speech. Experimental results on Librispeech demonstrate that our proposed method can effectively extract target sentences from very noisy and mixed speech (SNR=-3dB), achieving a phone error rate (PER) of 26\%, compared to the baseline system's PER of 96%.
