Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Complexity for D-Wave Superconductors

By using the RT formula and the subregion CV conjecture respectively, we numerically investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and holographic subregion complexity (HSC) for two holographic d-wave superconducting models with backreactions. We find that both the HEE and HSC can be used as good probes to these two d-wave superconducting phase transitions. The HEE of superconducting phase is always lower than that of the normal phase due to the condensation of degrees of freedom below the critical temperature Tc. However, for the HSC, it behaves differently and interestingly, which depends on both the strip-width Lx and backreaction \k{appa}.

Ballistic Ejection of Microdroplets from Overpacked Interfacial Assemblies

Spontaneous emulsification, resulting from the assembly and accumulation of surfactants at liquid-liquid interfaces, is an interfacial instability where microdroplets are generated and diffusively spread from the interface until complete emulsification. Here, we show that an external magnetic field can modulate the assembly of paramagnetic nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid-liquid interfaces and trigger an oversaturation in the areal density of the NPSs at the interface, as evidenced by a marked reduction in the interfacial tension, γ, and corroborated with a magnetostatic continuum theory. Despite the significant reduction in γ, the presence of the magnetic field does not cause stable interfaces to become unstable. Upon rapid removal of the field, however, an explosive ejection of a plume of microdroplets from the surface occurs, a dynamical interfacial instability which is termed explosive emulsification. This explosive event rapidly reduces the areal density of the NPSs to its pre-field level, stabilizing the interface. The ability to externally suppress or trigger the explosive emulsification and controlled generation of tens of thousands of microdroplets, uncovers an efficient energy storage and release process, that has potential applications for controlled and directed delivery of chemicals and remotely controlled soft microrobots, taking advantage of the ferromagnetic nature of the microdroplets.

Multiscale Latent-Guided Entropy Model for LiDAR Point Cloud Compression

The non-uniform distribution and extremely sparse nature of the LiDAR point cloud (LPC) bring significant challenges to its high-efficient compression. This paper proposes a novel end-to-end, fully-factorized deep framework that encodes the original LPC into an octree structure and hierarchically decomposes the octree entropy model in layers. The proposed framework utilizes a hierarchical latent variable as side information to encapsulate the sibling and ancestor dependence, which provides sufficient context information for the modelling of point cloud distribution while enabling the parallel encoding and decoding of octree nodes in the same layer. Besides, we propose a residual coding framework for the compression of the latent variable, which explores the spatial correlation of each layer by progressive downsampling, and model the corresponding residual with a fully-factorized entropy model. Furthermore, we propose soft addition and subtraction for residual coding to improve network flexibility. The comprehensive experiment results on the LiDAR benchmark SemanticKITTI and MPEG-specified dataset Ford demonstrates that our proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art performance among all the previous LPC frameworks. Besides, our end-to-end, fully-factorized framework is proved by experiment to be high-parallelized and time-efficient and saves more than 99.8% of decoding time compared to previous state-of-the-art methods on LPC compression.

PIER: Permutation-Level Interest-Based End-to-End Re-ranking Framework in E-commerce

Re-ranking draws increased attention on both academics and industries, which rearranges the ranking list by modeling the mutual influence among items to better meet users' demands. Many existing re-ranking methods directly take the initial ranking list as input, and generate the optimal permutation through a well-designed context-wise model, which brings the evaluation-before-reranking problem. Meanwhile, evaluating all candidate permutations brings unacceptable computational costs in practice. Thus, to better balance efficiency and effectiveness, online systems usually use a two-stage architecture which uses some heuristic methods such as beam-search to generate a suitable amount of candidate permutations firstly, which are then fed into the evaluation model to get the optimal permutation. However, existing methods in both stages can be improved through the following aspects. As for generation stage, heuristic methods only use point-wise prediction scores and lack an effective judgment. As for evaluation stage, most existing context-wise evaluation models only consider the item context and lack more fine-grained feature context modeling. This paper presents a novel end-to-end re-ranking framework named PIER to tackle the above challenges which still follows the two-stage architecture and contains two mainly modules named FPSM and OCPM. We apply SimHash in FPSM to select top-K candidates from the full permutation based on user's permutation-level interest in an efficient way. Then we design a novel omnidirectional attention mechanism in OCPM to capture the context information in the permutation. Finally, we jointly train these two modules end-to-end by introducing a comparative learning loss. Offline experiment results demonstrate that PIER outperforms baseline models on both public and industrial datasets, and we have successfully deployed PIER on Meituan food delivery platform.

A Deep Behavior Path Matching Network for Click-Through Rate Prediction

User behaviors on an e-commerce app not only contain different kinds of feedback on items but also sometimes imply the cognitive clue of the user's decision-making. For understanding the psychological procedure behind user decisions, we present the behavior path and propose to match the user's current behavior path with historical behavior paths to predict user behaviors on the app. Further, we design a deep neural network for behavior path matching and solve three difficulties in modeling behavior paths: sparsity, noise interference, and accurate matching of behavior paths. In particular, we leverage contrastive learning to augment user behavior paths, provide behavior path self-activation to alleviate the effect of noise, and adopt a two-level matching mechanism to identify the most appropriate candidate. Our model shows excellent performance on two real-world datasets, outperforming the state-of-the-art CTR model. Moreover, our model has been deployed on the Meituan food delivery platform and has accumulated 1.6% improvement in CTR and 1.8% improvement in advertising revenue.

Decision-Making Context Interaction Network for Click-Through Rate Prediction

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is crucial in recommendation and online advertising systems. Existing methods usually model user behaviors, while ignoring the informative context which influences the user to make a click decision, e.g., click pages and pre-ranking candidates that inform inferences about user interests, leading to suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a Decision-Making Context Interaction Network (DCIN), which deploys a carefully designed Context Interaction Unit (CIU) to learn decision-making contexts and thus benefits CTR prediction. In addition, the relationship between different decision-making context sources is explored by the proposed Adaptive Interest Aggregation Unit (AIAU) to improve CTR prediction further. In the experiments on public and industrial datasets, DCIN significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Notably, the model has obtained the improvement of CTR+2.9%/CPM+2.1%/GMV+1.5% for online A/B testing and served the main traffic of Meituan Waimai advertising system.

Efficient and robust chiral discrimination by invariant-based inverse engineering

We propose an accurate and convenient method to achieve 100\% discrimination of chiral molecules with Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant. By reversely designing the pulse scheme of handed resolution, we obtain the parameters of the three-level Hamiltonians to achieve this goal. For the same initial state, we can completely transfer its population to one energy level for left-handed molecules, while transfer it to another energy level for right-handed molecules. Moreover, this method can be further optimized when errors exist, and it shows that the optimal method are more robust against these errors than the counterdiabatic and original invariant-based shortcut schemes. This provides an effective, accurate, and robust method to distinguish the handedness of molecules.

Trade-off relations of quantum resource theory in neutrino oscillations

The violation of the classical bounds imposed by Leggett-Garg inequalities has tested the quantumness of neutrino oscillations (NOs) over a long distance during the propagation. The measure of quantumness in experimentally observed NOs is studied via quantum resource theory (QRT). Here, we focus on the trade-off relations of QRT in the three-flavor NOs, based on Bell-type violations, first-order coherence and intrinsic concurrence, and the relative entropy of coherence. For the electron and muon antineutrino oscillations, the analytical trade-off relations obeyed by the Bell-CHSH inequality of pairwise flavor states in this three-flavor neutrino system are obtained; the sum of the maximal violation of the CHSH tests for three pairwise flavor states is less than or equal to 12. Moreover, there exists an equality relation concerning first-order coherence and intrinsic concurrence in NOs, showing how much quantum resources flow between first-order coherence and intrinsic concurrence during the neutrino propagation. In addition, it is found that the tripartite coherence of three-flavor system is equal to or larger than the sum of the coherence of reduced bipartite flavor states. The trade-off relations of QRT provide a method for studying how the quantum resources convert and distribute in NOs, which might inspire the future applications in quantum information processing using neutrinos.

Lyapunov exponent, universality and phase transition for products of random matrices

Products of $M$ i.i.d. random matrices of size $N \times N$ are related to classical limit theorems in probability theory ($N=1$ and large $M$), to Lyapunov exponents in dynamical systems (finite $N$ and large $M$), and to universality in random matrix theory (finite $M$ and large $N$). Under the two different limits of $M \to \infty$ and $N \to \infty$, the local singular value statistics display Gaussian and random matrix theory universality, respectively. However, it is unclear what happens if both $M$ and $N$ go to infinity. This problem, proposed by Akemann, Burda, Kieburg \cite{Akemann-Burda-Kieburg14} and Deift \cite{Deift17}, lies at the heart of understanding both kinds of universal limits. In the case of complex Gaussian random matrices, we prove that there exists a crossover phenomenon as the relative ratio of $M$ and $N$ changes from $0$ to $\infty$: sine and Airy kernels from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) when $M/N \to 0$, Gaussian fluctuation when $M/N \to \infty$, and new critical phenomena when $M/N \to γ\in (0,\infty)$. Accordingly, we further prove that the largest singular value undergoes a phase transition between the Gaussian and GUE Tracy-Widom distributions.

Direct Heterogeneous Causal Learning for Resource Allocation Problems in Marketing

Marketing is an important mechanism to increase user engagement and improve platform revenue, and heterogeneous causal learning can help develop more effective strategies. Most decision-making problems in marketing can be formulated as resource allocation problems and have been studied for decades. Existing works usually divide the solution procedure into two fully decoupled stages, i.e., machine learning (ML) and operation research (OR) -- the first stage predicts the model parameters and they are fed to the optimization in the second stage. However, the error of the predicted parameters in ML cannot be respected and a series of complex mathematical operations in OR lead to the increased accumulative errors. Essentially, the improved precision on the prediction parameters may not have a positive correlation on the final solution due to the side-effect from the decoupled design. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for solving resource allocation problems to mitigate the side-effects. Our key intuition is that we introduce the decision factor to establish a bridge between ML and OR such that the solution can be directly obtained in OR by only performing the sorting or comparison operations on the decision factor. Furthermore, we design a customized loss function that can conduct direct heterogeneous causal learning on the decision factor, an unbiased estimation of which can be guaranteed when the loss converges. As a case study, we apply our approach to two crucial problems in marketing: the binary treatment assignment problem and the budget allocation problem with multiple treatments. Both large-scale simulations and online A/B Tests demonstrate that our approach achieves significant improvement compared with state-of-the-art.

An Exploration of Cross-Patch Collaborations via Patch Linkage in OpenStack

Contemporary development projects benefit from code review as it improves the quality of a project. Large ecosystems of inter-dependent projects like OpenStack generate a large number of reviews, which poses new challenges for collaboration (improving patches, fixing defects). Review tools allow developers to link between patches, to indicate patch dependency, competing solutions, or provide broader context. We hypothesize that such patch linkage may also simulate cross-collaboration. With a case study of OpenStack, we take a first step to explore collaborations that occur after a patch linkage was posted between two patches (i.e., cross-patch collaboration). Our empirical results show that although patch linkage that requests collaboration is relatively less prevalent, the probability of collaboration is relatively higher. Interestingly, the results also show that collaborative contributions via patch linkage are non-trivial, i.e, contributions can affect the review outcome (such as voting) or even improve the patch (i.e., revising). This work opens up future directions to understand barriers and opportunities related to this new kind of collaboration, that assists with code review and development tasks in large ecosystems.

High-Performance Transformer Tracking

Correlation has a critical role in the tracking field, especially in recent popular Siamese-based trackers. The correlation operation is a simple fusion method that considers the similarity between the template and the search region. However, the correlation operation is a local linear matching process, losing semantic information and easily falling into a local optimum, which may be the bottleneck in designing high-accuracy tracking algorithms. In this work, to determine whether a better feature fusion method exists than correlation, a novel attention-based feature fusion network, inspired by the transformer, is presented. This network effectively combines the template and search region features using attention. Specifically, the proposed method includes an ego-context augment module based on self-attention and a cross-feature augment module based on cross-attention. First, we present a transformer tracking (named TransT) method based on the Siamese-like feature extraction backbone, the designed attention-based fusion mechanism, and the classification and regression head. Based on the TransT baseline, we further design a segmentation branch to generate an accurate mask. Finally, we propose a stronger version of TransT by extending TransT with a multi-template scheme and an IoU prediction head, named TransT-M. Experiments show that our TransT and TransT-M methods achieve promising results on seven popular datasets. Code and models are available at https://github.com/chenxin-dlut/TransT-M.

Microscopic Reversibility and Emergent Elasticity in Ultrastable Granular Systems

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. X 12, 031021], we reported experimental observations of ``ultrastable'' states in a shear-jammed granular system subjected to small-amplitude cyclic shear. In such states, all the particle positions and contact forces are reproduced after each shear cycle so that a strobed image of the stresses and particle positions appears static. In the present work, we report further analyses of data from those experiments to characterize both global and local responses of ultrastable states within a shear cycle, not just the strobed dynamics. We find that ultrastable states follow a power-law relation between shear modulus and pressure with an exponent $β\approx 0.5$, reminiscent of critical scaling laws near jamming. We also examine the evolution of contact forces measured using photoelasticimetry. We find that there are two types of contacts: non-persistent contacts that reversibly open and close; and persistent contacts that never open \yiqiu{and display no measurable sliding}. We show that the non-persistent contacts make a non-negligible contribution to the emergent shear modulus. We also analyze the spatial correlations of the stress tensor and compare them to the predictions of a recent theory of the emergent elasticity of granular solids, the Vector Charge Theory of Granular mechanics and dynamics (VCTG) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 118002, arXiv:2204.11811]. We show that our experimental results can be fit well by VCTG, assuming uniaxial symmetry of the contact networks. The fits reveal that the response of the ultrastable states to additional applied stress is substantially more isotropic than that of the original shear-jammed states. Our results provide important insight into the mechanical properties of frictional granular solids created by shear.

Efficient Visual Tracking via Hierarchical Cross-Attention Transformer

In recent years, target tracking has made great progress in accuracy. This development is mainly attributed to powerful networks (such as transformers) and additional modules (such as online update and refinement modules). However, less attention has been paid to tracking speed. Most state-of-the-art trackers are satisfied with the real-time speed on powerful GPUs. However, practical applications necessitate higher requirements for tracking speed, especially when edge platforms with limited resources are used. In this work, we present an efficient tracking method via a hierarchical cross-attention transformer named HCAT. Our model runs about 195 fps on GPU, 45 fps on CPU, and 55 fps on the edge AI platform of NVidia Jetson AGX Xavier. Experiments show that our HCAT achieves promising results on LaSOT, GOT-10k, TrackingNet, NFS, OTB100, UAV123, and VOT2020. Code and models are available at https://github.com/chenxin-dlut/HCAT.

Wasserstein Archetypal Analysis

Archetypal analysis is an unsupervised machine learning method that summarizes data using a convex polytope. In its original formulation, for fixed k, the method finds a convex polytope with k vertices, called archetype points, such that the polytope is contained in the convex hull of the data and the mean squared Euclidean distance between the data and the polytope is minimal. In the present work, we consider an alternative formulation of archetypal analysis based on the Wasserstein metric, which we call Wasserstein archetypal analysis (WAA). In one dimension, there exists a unique solution of WAA and, in two dimensions, we prove existence of a solution, as long as the data distribution is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We discuss obstacles to extending our result to higher dimensions and general data distributions. We then introduce an appropriate regularization of the problem, via a Renyi entropy, which allows us to obtain existence of solutions of the regularized problem for general data distributions, in arbitrary dimensions. We prove a consistency result for the regularized problem, ensuring that if the data are iid samples from a probability measure, then as the number of samples is increased, a subsequence of the archetype points converges to the archetype points for the limiting data distribution, almost surely. Finally, we develop and implement a gradient-based computational approach for the two-dimensional problem, based on the semi-discrete formulation of the Wasserstein metric. Our analysis is supported by detailed computational experiments.

Tight Mutual Information Estimation With Contrastive Fenchel-Legendre Optimization

Successful applications of InfoNCE and its variants have popularized the use of contrastive variational mutual information (MI) estimators in machine learning. While featuring superior stability, these estimators crucially depend on costly large-batch training, and they sacrifice bound tightness for variance reduction. To overcome these limitations, we revisit the mathematics of popular variational MI bounds from the lens of unnormalized statistical modeling and convex optimization. Our investigation not only yields a new unified theoretical framework encompassing popular variational MI bounds but also leads to a novel, simple, and powerful contrastive MI estimator named as FLO. Theoretically, we show that the FLO estimator is tight, and it provably converges under stochastic gradient descent. Empirically, our FLO estimator overcomes the limitations of its predecessors and learns more efficiently. The utility of FLO is verified using an extensive set of benchmarks, which also reveals the trade-offs in practical MI estimation.

Environment-mediated entropic uncertainty in charging quantum batteries

We studied the dynamics of entropic uncertainty in Markovian and non-Markovian systems during the charging of open quantum batteries (QBs) mediated by a common dissipation environment. In the non-Markovian regime, the battery is almost fully charged efficiently, and the strong non-Markovian property is beneficial for improving the charging power. In addition, the results show that the energy storage is closely related to the couplings of the charger-reservoir and battery-reservoir; that is, the stronger coupling of a charger-reservoir improves energy storage. In particular, entanglement is required to obtain the most stored energy and is accompanied by the least tight entropic bound. Interestingly, it was found that the tightness of the entropic bound can be considered a good indicator of the energy transfer in different charging processes, and the complete energy transfer always corresponds to the tightest entropic bound. Our results provide insight into the optimal charging efficiency of QBs during practical charging.

A generalized expansion method for computing Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions on manifolds

Eigendecomposition of the Laplace-Beltrami operator is instrumental for a variety of applications from physics to data science. We develop a numerical method of computation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth bounded domain based on the relaxation to the Schrödinger operator with finite potential on a Riemannian manifold and projection in a special basis. We prove spectral exactness of the method and provide examples of calculated results and applications, particularly, in quantum billiards on manifolds.
