Coexistence of Intrinsic Superconductivity and Topological Insulator State in Monoclinic Phase WS2

Recently, intriguing phenomena of superconductivity, type-II Weyl semimetal or quantum spin Hall states were discovered in metastable 1T'-type VIB-group transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here, we report that monoclinic phase WS2 was discovered and synthesized in our experiments. The intrinsic superconducting transition was observed in monoclinic WS2 with a transition temperature Tc of 8.8 K which is the highest among previously reported TMDs without any fine-tuning process. Intersteing, topological insulator state, defined by topological invariant Z2, was also discovered with a single Dirac cone on the surface, which is different from all topological states reported in TMDs. Further, the electronic structure was found to have a strong anisotropy by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and first-principles calculations. Our findings reveal that monoclinic WS2 might be a new topological superconductivity candidate with a strong anisotropy.

Learning regression and verification networks for long-term visual tracking

Compared with short-term tracking, the long-term tracking task requires determining the tracked object is present or absent, and then estimating the accurate bounding box if present or conducting image-wide re-detection if absent. Until now, few attempts have been done although this task is much closer to designing practical tracking systems. In this work, we propose a novel long-term tracking framework based on deep regression and verification networks. The offline-trained regression model is designed using the object-aware feature fusion and region proposal networks to generate a series of candidates and estimate their similarity scores effectively. The verification network evaluates these candidates to output the optimal one as the tracked object with its classification score, which is online updated to adapt to the appearance variations based on newly reliable observations. The similarity and classification scores are combined to obtain a final confidence value, based on which our tracker can determine the absence of the target accurately and conduct image-wide re-detection to capture the target successfully when it reappears. Extensive experiments show that our tracker achieves the best performance on the VOT2018 long-term challenge and state-of-the-art results on the OxUvA long-term dataset.

Phonetic-attention scoring for deep speaker features in speaker verification

Recent studies have shown that frame-level deep speaker features can be derived from a deep neural network with the training target set to discriminate speakers by a short speech segment. By pooling the frame-level features, utterance-level representations, called d-vectors, can be derived and used in the automatic speaker verification (ASV) task. This simple average pooling, however, is inherently sensitive to the phonetic content of the utterance. An interesting idea borrowed from machine translation is the attention-based mechanism, where the contribution of an input word to the translation at a particular time is weighted by an attention score. This score reflects the relevance of the input word and the present translation. We can use the same idea to align utterances with different phonetic contents. This paper proposes a phonetic-attention scoring approach for d-vector systems. By this approach, an attention score is computed for each frame pair. This score reflects the similarity of the two frames in phonetic content, and is used to weigh the contribution of this frame pair in the utterance-based scoring. This new scoring approach emphasizes the frame pairs with similar phonetic contents, which essentially provides a soft alignment for utterances with any phonetic contents. Experimental results show that compared with the naive average pooling, this phonetic-attention scoring approach can deliver consistent performance improvement in ASV tasks of both text-dependent and text-independent.

Dynamics and stationary configurations of heterogeneous foams

We consider the variational foam model, where the goal is to minimize the total surface area of a collection of bubbles subject to the constraint that the volume of each bubble is prescribed. We apply sharp interface methods to develop an efficient computational method for this problem. In addition to simulating time dynamics, we also report on stationary states of this flow for <22 bubbles in two dimensions and <18 bubbles in three dimensions. For small numbers of bubbles, we recover known analytical results, which we briefly discuss. In two dimensions, we also recover the previous numerical results of Cox et. al. (2003), computed using other methods. Particular attention is given to locally optimal foam configurations and heterogeneous foams, where the volumes of the bubbles are not equal. Configurational transitions are reported for the quasi-stationary flow where the volume of one of the bubbles is varied and, for each volume, the stationary state is computed. The results from these numerical experiments are described and accompanied by many figures and videos.

Unraveling the Links among Sympathetic Eruptions

Solar eruptions occurring at different places within a relatively short time interval are considered to be sympathetic. However, it is difficult to determine whether there exists a cause and effect between them. Here we study a failed and a successful filament eruption following an X1.8-class flare on 2014 December 20, in which slipping-like magnetic reconnections serve as a key causal link among the eruptions. Reconnection signatures and effects are: at both sides of the filament experiencing the failed eruption, serpentine ribbons extend along chromospheric network to move away from the filament, while a hot loop apparently grows above it; at the filament undergoing the successful eruption, overlying cold loops contract, while coronal dimming appears at both sides even before the filament eruption. These effects are understood by reconnections continually transforming magnetic fluxes overlying one filament to the other, which adjusts how the magnetic field decays with increasing height above the filaments in opposite trends, therefore either strengthening or weakening the magnetic confinement of each filament.

Optical control of magnetism in NiFe/VO2 heterostructures

Optical methods for magnetism manipulation have been considered as a promising strategy for ultralow-power and ultrahigh-speed spin switches, which becomes a hot spot in the field of spintronics. However, a widely applicable and efficient method to combine optical operation with magnetic modulation is still highly desired. Here, the strongly correlated electron material VO2 is introduced to realize phase-transition based optical control of the magnetism in NiFe. The NiFe/VO2 bilayer heterostructure features appreciable modulations in electrical conductivity (55%), coercivity (60%), and magnetic anisotropy (33.5%). Further analyses indicate that interfacial strain coupling plays a crucial role in this modulation. Utilizing this optically controlled magnetism modulation feature, programmable Boolean logic gates (AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR, NXOR and NOT) for high-speed and low-power data processing are demonstrated based on this engineered heterostructure. As a demonstration of phase-transition spintronics, this work may pave the way for next-generation electronics in the post-Moore era.

Chinese Poetry Generation with Flexible Styles

Research has shown that sequence-to-sequence neural models, particularly those with the attention mechanism, can successfully generate classical Chinese poems. However, neural models are not capable of generating poems that match specific styles, such as the impulsive style of Li Bai, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty. This work proposes a memory-augmented neural model to enable the generation of style-specific poetry. The key idea is a memory structure that stores how poems with a desired style were generated by humans, and uses similar fragments to adjust the generation. We demonstrate that the proposed algorithm generates poems with flexible styles, including styles of a particular era and an individual poet.

Three-dimensional convolutional neural networks for neutrinoless double-beta decay signal/background discrimination in high-pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber

In the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, the high-pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber has a distinct advantage, because the ionization charge tracks produced by particle interactions are extended and the detector captures the full three-dimensional charge distribution with appropriate charge readout systems. Such information of tracks provides a crucial extra-handle for discriminating signal events against backgrounds. In this paper, we constructed a toy model to demonstrate where the discrimination power comes from and how much of it the neural network models have already harnessed. Then we adapted 3-dimensional convolutional and residual neural networks on the simulated double-beta and background charge tracks and tested their capabilities in classifying these two types of events. We show that both the 3D structure and the overall depth of the neural networks significantly improve the accuracy of the classifier and lead to results better than previous works. We also studied their performance under various spatial granularities as well as different diffusion and noise conditions. The results indicate that the methods are stable and generalize well despite varying experimental conditions.

Learning to Navigate for Fine-grained Classification

Fine-grained classification is challenging due to the difficulty of finding discriminative features. Finding those subtle traits that fully characterize the object is not straightforward. To handle this circumstance, we propose a novel self-supervision mechanism to effectively localize informative regions without the need of bounding-box/part annotations. Our model, termed NTS-Net for Navigator-Teacher-Scrutinizer Network, consists of a Navigator agent, a Teacher agent and a Scrutinizer agent. In consideration of intrinsic consistency between informativeness of the regions and their probability being ground-truth class, we design a novel training paradigm, which enables Navigator to detect most informative regions under the guidance from Teacher. After that, the Scrutinizer scrutinizes the proposed regions from Navigator and makes predictions. Our model can be viewed as a multi-agent cooperation, wherein agents benefit from each other, and make progress together. NTS-Net can be trained end-to-end, while provides accurate fine-grained classification predictions as well as highly informative regions during inference. We achieve state-of-the-art performance in extensive benchmark datasets.

The intrinsic relations of quantum resources in multiparticle systems

Quantum resources play crucial roles for displaying superiority in many quantum communication and computation tasks. To reveal the intrinsic relations hidden in these quantum resources, many efforts have been made in recent years. In this work, we investigate the correlations of the tripartite W-type states based on bipartite quantum resources. The interrelations among the degree of coherence, concurrence, Bell nonlocality and purity are presented. Considering Bell nonlocal and Bell local (satisfied the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality) states for the two-qubit subsystems derived from the tripartite W-type states, we find exact lower and upper boundaries of the degree of coherence versus concurrence. Interestingly, exact relation among the degree of coherence, concurrence and purity is obtained. Moreover, coherence is also closely related to entanglement in two specific scenarios: the tripartite W-type state under decoherence and a practical system for a renormalized spin-1/2 chain.

Effects of Hawking radiation on the entropic uncertainty in a Schwarzschild space-time

Heisenberg uncertainty principle describes a basic restriction on observer's ability of precisely predicting the measurement for a pair of non-commuting observables, and virtually is at the core of quantum mechanics. We herein aim to study entropic uncertainty relation under the background of the Schwarzschild black hole and its control. Explicitly, we develop dynamical features of the measuring uncertainty via entropy in a practical model where a stationary particle interacts with its surrounding environment while another particle --- serving as a quantum memory reservoir --- undergoes freefall in the vicinity of the event horizon of the Schwarzschild space-time. It shows higher Hawking temperatures would give rise to an inflation of the entropic uncertainty on the measured particle. This is suggestive the measurement uncertainty is strongly correlated with degree of mixing present in the evolving particles. Additionally, based on information flow theory, we provide a physical interpretation for the observed dynamical behaviors related with the entropic uncertainty in such a realistic scenario. Finally, an efficient strategy is proposed to reduce the uncertainty by non-tracing-preserved operations. Therefore, our explorations may improve the understanding of the dynamic entropic uncertainty in a curved space-time, and illustrate predictions of quantum measurements in relativistic quantum information sciences.

Diffusion generated methods for denoising target-valued images

We consider the inverse problem of denoising an image where each point (pixel) is an element of a target set, which we refer to as a target-valued image. The target sets considered are either (i) a closed convex set of Euclidean space or (ii) a closed subset of the sphere such that the closest point mapping is defined almost everywhere. The energy for the denoising problem consists of an $L^2$-fidelity term which is regularized by the Dirichlet energy. A relaxation of this energy, based on the heat kernel, is introduced and the associated minimization problem is proven to be well-posed. We introduce a diffusion generated method which can be used to efficiently find minimizers of this energy. We prove results for the stability and convergence of the method for both types of target sets. The method is demonstrated on a variety of synthetic and test problems, with associated target sets given by the semi-positive definite matrices, the cube, spheres, the orthogonal matrices, and the real projective line.

Asymptotics of free fermions in a quadratic well at finite temperature and the Moshe-Neuberger-Shapiro random matrix model

We derive the local statistics of the canonical ensemble of free fermions in a quadratic potential well at finite temperature, as the particle number approaches infinity. This free fermion model is equivalent to a random matrix model proposed by Moshe, Neuberger and Shapiro. Limiting behaviors obtained before for the grand canonical ensemble are observed in the canonical ensemble: We have at the edge the phase transition from the Tracy--Widom distribution to the Gumbel distribution via the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) crossover distribution, and in the bulk the phase transition from the sine point process to the Poisson point process. A similarity between this model and a class of models in the KPZ universality class is explained. We also derive the multi-time correlation functions and the multi-time gap probability formulas for the free fermions along the imaginary time.

AP18-OLR Challenge: Three Tasks and Their Baselines

The third oriental language recognition (OLR) challenge AP18-OLR is introduced in this paper, including the data profile, the tasks and the evaluation principles. Following the events in the last two years, namely AP16-OLR and AP17-OLR, the challenge this year focuses on more challenging tasks, including (1) short-duration utterances, (2) confusing languages, and (3) open-set recognition. The same as the previous events, the data of AP18-OLR is also provided by SpeechOcean and the NSFC M2ASR project. Baselines based on both the i-vector model and neural networks are constructed for the participants' reference. We report the baseline results on the three tasks and demonstrate that the three tasks are truly challenging. All the data is free for participants, and the Kaldi recipes for the baselines have been published online.

BRITS: Bidirectional Recurrent Imputation for Time Series

Time series are widely used as signals in many classification/regression tasks. It is ubiquitous that time series contains many missing values. Given multiple correlated time series data, how to fill in missing values and to predict their class labels? Existing imputation methods often impose strong assumptions of the underlying data generating process, such as linear dynamics in the state space. In this paper, we propose BRITS, a novel method based on recurrent neural networks for missing value imputation in time series data. Our proposed method directly learns the missing values in a bidirectional recurrent dynamical system, without any specific assumption. The imputed values are treated as variables of RNN graph and can be effectively updated during the backpropagation.BRITS has three advantages: (a) it can handle multiple correlated missing values in time series; (b) it generalizes to time series with nonlinear dynamics underlying; (c) it provides a data-driven imputation procedure and applies to general settings with missing data.We evaluate our model on three real-world datasets, including an air quality dataset, a health-care data, and a localization data for human activity. Experiments show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both imputation and classification/regression accuracies.

Strong spatial and spectral localization of surface plasmons in individual randomly disordered gold nanosponges

Porous nanosponges, percolated with a three-dimensional network of 10-nm sized ligaments, recently emerged as promising substrates for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy and (photo-)catalysis. Experimental and theoretical work suggests surface plasmon localization in some hot-spot modes as the physical origin of their unusual optical properties, but so far the existence of such hot-spots has not been proven. Here we use scattering-type scanning near-field nano-spectroscopy on individual gold nanosponges to reveal spatially and spectrally confined modes with 10 nanometer localization lengths by mapping the local optical density of states. High quality factors of individual hot-spots of more than 40 are demonstrated. A statistical analysis of near-field intensity fluctuations unveils plasmonics in the strong localization regime. The observed field localization and enhancement make such nanosponges an appealing platform for a variety of applications ranging from nonlinear optics to strong-coupling physics.

Learning Spatial-Aware Regressions for Visual Tracking

In this paper, we analyze the spatial information of deep features, and propose two complementary regressions for robust visual tracking. First, we propose a kernelized ridge regression model wherein the kernel value is defined as the weighted sum of similarity scores of all pairs of patches between two samples. We show that this model can be formulated as a neural network and thus can be efficiently solved. Second, we propose a fully convolutional neural network with spatially regularized kernels, through which the filter kernel corresponding to each output channel is forced to focus on a specific region of the target. Distance transform pooling is further exploited to determine the effectiveness of each output channel of the convolution layer. The outputs from the kernelized ridge regression model and the fully convolutional neural network are combined to obtain the ultimate response. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Correlation Tracking via Joint Discrimination and Reliability Learning

For visual tracking, an ideal filter learned by the correlation filter (CF) method should take both discrimination and reliability information. However, existing attempts usually focus on the former one while pay less attention to reliability learning. This may make the learned filter be dominated by the unexpected salient regions on the feature map, thereby resulting in model degradation. To address this issue, we propose a novel CF-based optimization problem to jointly model the discrimination and reliability information. First, we treat the filter as the element-wise product of a base filter and a reliability term. The base filter is aimed to learn the discrimination information between the target and backgrounds, and the reliability term encourages the final filter to focus on more reliable regions. Second, we introduce a local response consistency regular term to emphasize equal contributions of different regions and avoid the tracker being dominated by unreliable regions. The proposed optimization problem can be solved using the alternating direction method and speeded up in the Fourier domain. We conduct extensive experiments on the OTB-2013, OTB-2015 and VOT-2016 datasets to evaluate the proposed tracker. Experimental results show that our tracker performs favorably against other state-of-the-art trackers.
