`Sinking' in a bed of grains activated by shearing

We show how a weak force, $f$, enables intruder motion through dense granular materials subject to external mechanical excitations, in the present case stepwise shearing. A force acts on a Teflon disc in a two dimensional system of photoelastic discs. This force is much smaller than the smallest force needed to move the disc without any external excitation. In a cycle, material + intruder are sheared quasi-statically from $γ= 0$ to $γ_{max}$, and then backwards to $γ= 0$. During various cycle phases, fragile and jammed states form. Net intruder motion, $δ$, occurs during fragile periods generated by shear reversals. $δ$ per cycle, e.g. the quasistatic rate $c$, is constant, linearly dependent on $γ_{max}$ and $f$. It vanishes as, $c \propto (ϕ_c - ϕ)^a$, with $a \simeq 3$ and $ϕ_c \simeq ϕ_J$, reflecting the stiffening of granular systems under shear as $ϕ\rightarrow ϕ_J$. The intruder motion induces large scale grain circulation. In the intruder frame, this motion is a granular analogue to fluid flow past a cylinder, where $f$ is the drag force exerted by the flow.

Medical Diagnosis From Laboratory Tests by Combining Generative and Discriminative Learning

A primary goal of computational phenotype research is to conduct medical diagnosis. In hospital, physicians rely on massive clinical data to make diagnosis decisions, among which laboratory tests are one of the most important resources. However, the longitudinal and incomplete nature of laboratory test data casts a significant challenge on its interpretation and usage, which may result in harmful decisions by both human physicians and automatic diagnosis systems. In this work, we take advantage of deep generative models to deal with the complex laboratory tests. Specifically, we propose an end-to-end architecture that involves a deep generative variational recurrent neural networks (VRNN) to learn robust and generalizable features, and a discriminative neural network (NN) model to learn diagnosis decision making, and the two models are trained jointly. Our experiments are conducted on a dataset involving 46,252 patients, and the 50 most frequent tests are used to predict the 50 most common diagnoses. The results show that our model, VRNN+NN, significantly (p<0.001) outperforms other baseline models. Moreover, we demonstrate that the representations learned by the joint training are more informative than those learned by pure generative models. Finally, we find that our model offers a surprisingly good imputation for missing values.

A generalized MBO diffusion generated motion for orthogonal matrix-valued fields

We consider the problem of finding stationary points of the Dirichlet energy for orthogonal matrix-valued fields. Following the Ginzburg-Landau approach, this energy is relaxed by penalizing the matrix-valued field when it does not take orthogonal matrix values. A generalization of the MBO diffusion generated motion is introduced that effectively finds local minimizers of this energy by iterating two steps until convergence. In the first step, as in the original method, the current matrix-valued field is evolved by the diffusion equation. In the second step, the field is pointwise reassigned to the closest orthogonal matrix, which can be computed via the singular value decomposition. We extend the Lyapunov function of Esedoglu and Otto to show that the method is non-increasing on iterates and hence, unconditionally stable. We also prove that spatially discretized iterates converge to a stationary solution in a finite number of iterations. The algorithm is implemented using the closest point method and non-uniform fast Fourier transform. We conclude with several numerical experiments on flat tori and closed surfaces, which, unsurprisingly, exhibit classical behavior from the Allen-Cahn and complex Ginzburg Landau equations, but also new phenomena.

Modeling synthetic spectra for transiting extrasolar giant planets: detectability of H$_2$S and PH$_3$ with JWST

JWST$'$s large aperture and wide wavelength coverage will enable it to collect the highest quality transit spectra observed so far. For exoplanetary atmospheres we expect to retrieve the abundance of the most abundant molecules, such as H$_2$O, CO, and CH$_4$. Other molecules, such as H$_2$S and PH$_3$, have been observed in Jupiter and Saturn but their chemistry and detectability in strongly irradiated planets is highly unknown. In this paper, we make the first effort to study their spectral features in solar composition atmospheres, and evaluate their detectability with JWST. We model the chemistry of phosphorus and sulfur in solar composition atmospheres. Our model includes the effect of vertical transport. Photochemistry effects are not included in our calculations. Using the abundance profiles, we model the JWST transmission and emission spectra for K=6.8 G-type star and for planets with cloud-free solar composition atmospheres. We find PH$_3$ is detectable at 3 sigma from transmission spectra of the simulated atmosphere with $T_{\rm eq}$ $<$ 500K using the NIRCam LW grism F444W mode with a total observing time of 28.8 hrs. H$_2$S is detectable at 3 sigma in the transmission and emission spectra for the simulated planet with $T_{\rm eq}$ $>$ 1500K using the NIRCam LW grism F322W2 mode with a total observing time of 24.0 hrs. Our results specifically highlight the importance of including H$_2$S for future abundances retrieval with JWST. The presence of clouds and hazes challenges the detections of PH$_3$ and H$_2$S, but H$_2$S features are still expected to be present in the emission spectra.

Enhanced Neural Machine Translation by Learning from Draft

Neural machine translation (NMT) has recently achieved impressive results. A potential problem of the existing NMT algorithm, however, is that the decoding is conducted from left to right, without considering the right context. This paper proposes an two-stage approach to solve the problem. In the first stage, a conventional attention-based NMT system is used to produce a draft translation, and in the second stage, a novel double-attention NMT system is used to refine the translation, by looking at the original input as well as the draft translation. This drafting-and-refinement can obtain the right-context information from the draft, hence producing more consistent translations. We evaluated this approach using two Chinese-English translation tasks, one with 44k pairs and 1M pairs respectively. The experiments showed that our approach achieved positive improvements over the conventional NMT system: the improvements are 2.4 and 0.9 BLEU points on the small-scale and large-scale tasks, respectively.

Recovering the lost steerability of quantum states within non-Markovian environments by utilizing quantum partially collapsing measurements

In this Letter, we mainly investigate the dynamic behavior of quantum steering and how to effectively recover the lost steerability of quantum states within non-Markovian environments. We consider two different cases (one-subsystem or all-subsystem interacts with the dissipative environments), and obtain that the dynamical interaction between system initialized by a Werner state and the non-Markovian environments can induce the quasi-periodic quantum entanglement (concurrence) resurgence, however, quantum steering cannot retrieve in such a condition. And we can obtain that the resurgent quantum entanglement cannot be utilized to achieve quantum steering. Subsequently, we put forward a feasible physical scheme for recovering the steerability of quantum states within the non-Markovian noises by prior weak measurement on each subsystem before the interaction with dissipative environments followed by post weak measurement reversal. It is shown that the steerability of quantum states and the fidelity can be effectively restored. Furthermore, the results show that the larger the weak measurement strength is, the better the effectiveness of the scheme is. Consequently, our investigations might be beneficial to recover the lost steerability of quantum states within the non-Markovian regimes.

Design, Modeling and Dynamic Compensation PID Control of a Fully-Actuated Aerial Manipulation System

This paper addresses design, modeling and dynamic-compensation PID (dc-PID) control of a novel type of fully-actuated aerial manipulation (AM) system. Firstly, design of novel mechanical structure of the AM is presented. Secondly, kinematics and dynamics of AM are modeled using Craig parameters and recursion Newton-Euler equations respectively, which give rise to a more accurate dynamic relationship between aerial platform and manipulator. Then, the dynamic-compensation PID control is proposed to solve the problem of fully-actuated control of AM. Finally, uniform coupled matrix equations between driving forces/moments and rotor speeds are derived, which can support design and analysis of parameters and decoupling theoretically. It is taken into account practical problems including noise and perturbation, parameter uncertainty, and power limitation in simulations, and results from simulations shows that the AM system presented can be fully-actued controlled with advanced control performances, which can not achieved theoretically in traditional AM. And with compared to backstepping control dc-PID has better control accuracy and capability to disturbance rejection in two simulations of aerial operation tasks with motion of joint. The experiment of dc-pid proves the availability and effectiveness of the method proposed.

Local and global avalanches in a 2D sheared granular medium

We present the experimental and numerical studies of a 2D sheared amorphous material constituted of bidisperse photo-elastic disks. We analyze the statistics of avalanches during shear including the local and global fluctuations in energy and changes in particle positions and orientations. We find scale free distributions for these global and local avalanches denoted by power-laws whose cut-offs vary with inter-particle friction and packing fraction. Different exponents are found for these power-laws depending on the quantity from which variations are extracted. An asymmetry in time of the avalanche shapes is evidenced along with the fact that avalanches are mainly triggered from the shear bands. A simple relation independent from the intensity, is found between the number of local avalanches and the global avalanches they form. We also compare these experimental and numerical results for both local and global fluctuations to predictions from meanfield and depinning theories.

Phonetic Temporal Neural Model for Language Identification

Deep neural models, particularly the LSTM-RNN model, have shown great potential for language identification (LID). However, the use of phonetic information has been largely overlooked by most existing neural LID methods, although this information has been used very successfully in conventional phonetic LID systems. We present a phonetic temporal neural model for LID, which is an LSTM-RNN LID system that accepts phonetic features produced by a phone-discriminative DNN as the input, rather than raw acoustic features. This new model is similar to traditional phonetic LID methods, but the phonetic knowledge here is much richer: it is at the frame level and involves compacted information of all phones. Our experiments conducted on the Babel database and the AP16-OLR database demonstrate that the temporal phonetic neural approach is very effective, and significantly outperforms existing acoustic neural models. It also outperforms the conventional i-vector approach on short utterances and in noisy conditions.

Design of a Nondestructive Two-in-One Instrument for Measuring the Polarization and Energy Spectrum at an X-ray FEL Facility

The free electron laser (FEL), as a next-generation light source, is an attractive tool in scientific frontier research because of its advantages of full coherence, ultra-short pulse duration, and controllable polarization. Owing to the demand of real-time bunch diagnosis during FEL experiments, precise nondestructive measurements of the polarization and X-ray energy spectrum using one instrument are preferred. In this paper, such an instrument based on the electron time-of-flight technique is proposed. By considering the complexity and nonlinearity, a numerical model in the framework of Geant4 has been developed for optimization. Taking the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL user facility as an example, its measurement performances' dependencies on the critical parameters were studied systematically, and, finally, an optimal design was obtained, achieving resolutions of 0.5% for the polarization degree and 0.3 eV for the X-ray energy spectrum.

Amulet: Aggregating Multi-level Convolutional Features for Salient Object Detection

Fully convolutional neural networks (FCNs) have shown outstanding performance in many dense labeling problems. One key pillar of these successes is mining relevant information from features in convolutional layers. However, how to better aggregate multi-level convolutional feature maps for salient object detection is underexplored. In this work, we present Amulet, a generic aggregating multi-level convolutional feature framework for salient object detection. Our framework first integrates multi-level feature maps into multiple resolutions, which simultaneously incorporate coarse semantics and fine details. Then it adaptively learns to combine these feature maps at each resolution and predict saliency maps with the combined features. Finally, the predicted results are efficiently fused to generate the final saliency map. In addition, to achieve accurate boundary inference and semantic enhancement, edge-aware feature maps in low-level layers and the predicted results of low resolution features are recursively embedded into the learning framework. By aggregating multi-level convolutional features in this efficient and flexible manner, the proposed saliency model provides accurate salient object labeling. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our method performs favorably against state-of-the art approaches in terms of near all compared evaluation metrics.

Memory-augmented Neural Machine Translation

Neural machine translation (NMT) has achieved notable success in recent times, however it is also widely recognized that this approach has limitations with handling infrequent words and word pairs. This paper presents a novel memory-augmented NMT (M-NMT) architecture, which stores knowledge about how words (usually infrequently encountered ones) should be translated in a memory and then utilizes them to assist the neural model. We use this memory mechanism to combine the knowledge learned from a conventional statistical machine translation system and the rules learned by an NMT system, and also propose a solution for out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words based on this framework. Our experiments on two Chinese-English translation tasks demonstrated that the M-NMT architecture outperformed the NMT baseline by $9.0$ and $2.7$ BLEU points on the two tasks, respectively. Additionally, we found this architecture resulted in a much more effective OOV treatment compared to competitive methods.

Learning Uncertain Convolutional Features for Accurate Saliency Detection

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have delivered superior performance in many computer vision tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel deep fully convolutional network model for accurate salient object detection. The key contribution of this work is to learn deep uncertain convolutional features (UCF), which encourage the robustness and accuracy of saliency detection. We achieve this via introducing a reformulated dropout (R-dropout) after specific convolutional layers to construct an uncertain ensemble of internal feature units. In addition, we propose an effective hybrid upsampling method to reduce the checkerboard artifacts of deconvolution operators in our decoder network. The proposed methods can also be applied to other deep convolutional networks. Compared with existing saliency detection methods, the proposed UCF model is able to incorporate uncertainties for more accurate object boundary inference. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed saliency model performs favorably against state-of-the-art approaches. The uncertain feature learning mechanism as well as the upsampling method can significantly improve performance on other pixel-wise vision tasks.

How the relativistic motion affects Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering

In this Letter, the dynamic behavior of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and the redistribution of EPR steering under a relativistic framework are investigated. Specifically, we explore the scenario that particle A hold by Alice is in a flat space-time and another particle B by Bob entangled with A is in a non-inertial framework. The results show that EPR steering from Alice to Bob is dramatically destroyed by Unruh effect caused by the acceleration of Bob. Besides, EPR steering has an asymmetry property, and EPR steering asymmetry increases with the growing intensity of Unruh effect, implying that the Unruh effect can bring on EPR steering asymmetry. Furthermore, the reduced physical accessible EPR steering from Alice to Bob is distributed to the physical inaccessible EPR steering (from Alice to anti-Bob or from Bob to anti-Bob). Notably, unlike entanglement and quantum discord, only one of EPR steering from Alice to anti-Bob and Bob to anti-Bob experiences a sudden birth with the increase of acceleration parameter, which means that they cannot simultaneously survive. That is, the monogamy relation of EPR steering is still tenable in such a scenario. Consequently, we believe that EPR steering could also be served as one of important information resources within the long-distance quantum secure communication under the relativistic framework.

AP17-OLR Challenge: Data, Plan, and Baseline

We present the data profile and the evaluation plan of the second oriental language recognition (OLR) challenge AP17-OLR. Compared to the event last year (AP16-OLR), the new challenge involves more languages and focuses more on short utterances. The data is offered by SpeechOcean and the NSFC M2ASR project. Two types of baselines are constructed to assist the participants, one is based on the i-vector model and the other is based on various neural networks. We report the baseline results evaluated with various metrics defined by the AP17-OLR evaluation plan and demonstrate that the combined database is a reasonable data resource for multilingual research. All the data is free for participants, and the Kaldi recipes for the baselines have been published online.

Memory-augmented Chinese-Uyghur Neural Machine Translation

Neural machine translation (NMT) has achieved notable performance recently. However, this approach has not been widely applied to the translation task between Chinese and Uyghur, partly due to the limited parallel data resource and the large proportion of rare words caused by the agglutinative nature of Uyghur. In this paper, we collect ~200,000 sentence pairs and show that with this middle-scale database, an attention-based NMT can perform very well on Chinese-Uyghur/Uyghur-Chinese translation. To tackle rare words, we propose a novel memory structure to assist the NMT inference. Our experiments demonstrated that the memory-augmented NMT (M-NMT) outperforms both the vanilla NMT and the phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT). Interestingly, the memory structure provides an elegant way for dealing with words that are out of vocabulary.

Deep Factorization for Speech Signal

Speech signals are complex intermingling of various informative factors, and this information blending makes decoding any of the individual factors extremely difficult. A natural idea is to factorize each speech frame into independent factors, though it turns out to be even more difficult than decoding each individual factor. A major encumbrance is that the speaker trait, a major factor in speech signals, has been suspected to be a long-term distributional pattern and so not identifiable at the frame level. In this paper, we demonstrated that the speaker factor is also a short-time spectral pattern and can be largely identified with just a few frames using a simple deep neural network (DNN). This discovery motivated a cascade deep factorization (CDF) framework that infers speech factors in a sequential way, and factors previously inferred are used as conditional variables when inferring other factors. Our experiment on an automatic emotion recognition (AER) task demonstrated that this approach can effectively factorize speech signals, and using these factors, the original speech spectrum can be recovered with high accuracy. This factorization and reconstruction approach provides a novel tool for many speech processing tasks.

Deep Speaker Verification: Do We Need End to End?

End-to-end learning treats the entire system as a whole adaptable black box, which, if sufficient data are available, may learn a system that works very well for the target task. This principle has recently been applied to several prototype research on speaker verification (SV), where the feature learning and classifier are learned together with an objective function that is consistent with the evaluation metric. An opposite approach to end-to-end is feature learning, which firstly trains a feature learning model, and then constructs a back-end classifier separately to perform SV. Recently, both approaches achieved significant performance gains on SV, mainly attributed to the smart utilization of deep neural networks. However, the two approaches have not been carefully compared, and their respective advantages have not been well discussed. In this paper, we compare the end-to-end and feature learning approaches on a text-independent SV task. Our experiments on a dataset sampled from the Fisher database and involving 5,000 speakers demonstrated that the feature learning approach outperformed the end-to-end approach. This is a strong support for the feature learning approach, at least with data and computation resources similar to ours.
