Vector boson scattering: Recent experimental and theory developments

This document summarises the talks and discussions happened during the VBSCan Split17 workshop, the first general meeting of the VBSCan COST Action network. This collaboration is aiming at a consistent and coordinated study of vector-boson scattering from the phenomenological and experimental point of view, for the best exploitation of the data that will be delivered by existing and future particle colliders.

Vector Boson scattering at the LHC: counting experiments for unitarized models in a full six fermion approach

Unitarization models describe phenomenologically the high energy behaviour of a strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector. In this work, predictions of some unitarized models in vector boson scattering at LHC are studied and compared with analogous studies in Equivalent Vector Boson Approximation and previous results for the benchmark no-Higgs scenario. To perform such studies, unitarized model amplitudes have been implemented in the PHANTOM Monte Carlo in a complete calculation with six fermions in the final state.

Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC

We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. This article stems from contributions presented at the Helmholtz Alliance workshop on "Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC", DESY Hamburg, 13-15 September 2010.

PHANTOM: a Monte Carlo event generator for six parton final states at high energy colliders

PHANTOM is a tree level Monte Carlo for six parton final states at proton--proton, proton--antiproton and electron--positron collider at O(alpha_ew^6) and O(alpha_ew^4*alpha_s^2) including possible interferences between the two sets of diagrams. This comprehends all purely electroweak contribution as well as all contributions with one virtual or two external gluons. It can generate unweighted events for any set of processes and it is interfaced to parton shower and hadronization packages via the last Les Houches Accord protocol. It can be used to analyze the physics of boson boson scattering, Higgs boson production in boson boson fusion, t-tbar and three boson production.

New Physics at the LHC: A Les Houches Report. Physics at Tev Colliders 2007 -- New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. The signatures are organized according to the experimental objects that appear in the final state, and in particular the number of high pT leptons. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics'' working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 11-29 June, 2007).

Boson Fusion and Higgs production at the LHC in six fermion final states with one charged lepton pair

Boson boson scattering and Higgs production in boson boson fusion will be actively investigated at the LHC. We have performed a parton level study of all processes of the type $q_1 q_2 \to q_3 q_4 q_5 q_6 l^+l^-$ using for the first time a full fledged six fermion Monte Carlo event generator which employs exact matrix elements at $Ø(α_{em}^6)$. We have examined Higgs production in vector boson fusion followed by the decay chain $H\to ZZ\to l^+l^-jj$, including exactly all electroweak irreducible backgrounds. In the high mass region we have compared the case of a relatively light Higgs with the no-Higgs case. The integrated cross section for the latter case is more than twice that in the former for a minimum invariant mass of the $ZV$ pair of about 800 \GeV. We find, in a preliminary anlysis at parton level that, summing up the muon and the electron channels, about 30 events are expected in the light Higgs case for L=100 $fb^{-1}$.

A standard format for Les Houches Event Files

A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. This information is embedded in a minimal XML-style structure, for clarity and to simplify parsing.

Les Houches Physics at TeV Colliders 2005, Standard Model and Higgs working group: Summary report

This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics.

Boson-boson scattering and Higgs production at the LHC from a six fermion point of view: four jets + l$ν$ processes at $Ø(α_{em}^6)$

Boson-boson scattering and Higgs production in boson-boson fusion hold the key to electroweak symmetry breaking. In order to analyze these essential features of the Standard Model we have performed a partonic level study of all processes $q_1 q_2 \to q_3 q_4 q_5 q_6 l ν$ at the LHC using the exact matrix elements at $Ø(α_{em}^6)$ provided by \Phase, a new MC generator. These processes include also three boson production and the purely electroweak contribution to \toptop production as well as all irreducible backgrounds. Kinematical cuts have been studied in order to enhance the VV scattering signal over background. \Phase has been compared with different Monte Carlo's showing that a complete calculation is necessary for a correct description of the process.

PHASE, a Monte Carlo event generator for six-fermion physics at the LHC

PHASE is a new event generator dedicated to the study of Standard Model processes with six fermions in the final state at the LHC. The code is intended for analyses of vector boson scattering, Higgs search, three gauge boson production, and top physics. This first version of the program describes final states characterized by the presence of one neutrino, $pp\to 4q +l\nu_l$, at O($\alpha^6$). PHASE is based on a new iterative-adaptive multichannel technique, and employs exact leading order matrix elements. The code can generate unweighted events for any subset of all available final states. The produced parton-level events carry full information on their colour and flavour structure, enabling the evolution of the partons into fully hadronised final states. An interface to hadronization packages is provided via the Les Houches Protocol.

One-loop weak corrections to $γ/Z$ hadro-production at finite transverse momentum

We illustrate the effects of one-loop weak corrections onto the production of neutral gauge bosons of the Standard Model at RHIC-Spin, Tevatron and LHC, in presence of quark/gluon radiation from the initial state. We find such effects to be rather large, up to ${\cal O}(10-20%)$ in typical observables at all such colliders, where the cross section is measurable, thus advocating their inclusion in precision analyses

Weak Corrections to Hadronic Observables

We illustrate one-loop weak corrections to three-jet production in $e^+e^-$ at $\sqrt{s}=M_Z$, to the production of a $Z$ or $γ$ in association with a hard jet at hadron colliders and to the production cross section of two $b$-jets at Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

PHASE - An event generator for six fermion physics at the LHC

PHASE is a Monte Carlo event generator, under construction, for all Standard Model processes with six fermions in the final state at the LHC. It employs the full set of tree level Feynman diagrams, taking into account fermion masses for b quarks. The program can generate unweighted events for any subset of all six fermion final states in a single run, by making use of dedicated pre-samples. An interface to hadronization is provided.

One-loop weak corrections to three-jet observables at the Z pole

We briefly illustrate the impact of the genuinely weak one-loop virtual terms of the ${\cal O}(α_{\rm S}α_{\rm EW}^3)$ factorisable corrections to the three-jet cross section at $\sqrt s=M_Z$. Their importance for the measurement of $α_{\rm S}$ at GigaZ luminosities is emphasised

Les Houches 'Physics at Tev Colliders 2003' QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.
