Cosmology of Lorentz fiber-bundle induced scalar-tensor theories

We investigate the cosmological applications of scalar-tensor theories that arise effectively from the Lorentz fiber bundle of a Finsler-like geometry. We first show that the involved nonlinear connection induces a new scalar degree of freedom and eventually a scalar-tensor theory. Using both a holonomic and a nonholonomic basis, we show the appearance of an effective dark-energy sector, which additionally acquires an explicit interaction with the matter sector, arising purely from the internal structure of the theory. Applying the theory at late times we find that we can obtain the thermal history of the Universe, namely the sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, and moreover the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can be quintessencelike, phantomlike, or experience the phantom-divide crossing during cosmological evolution. Furthermore, applying the scenario at early times, we see that one can acquire an exponential de Sitter solution as well as obtain an inflationary realization with the desired scale-factor evolution. These features arise purely from the intrinsic geometrical structure of Finsler-like geometry and reveal the capabilities of the construction.

Correspondence of cosmology from non-extensive thermodynamics with fluids of generalized equation of state

We show that there is a correspondence between cosmology from non-extensive thermodynamics and cosmology with fluids of redefined and generalized equation of state. We first establish the correspondence in the case of basic non-extensive thermodynamics, and then we proceed by investigating the more consistent case, from the quantum field theoretical point of view, of varying exponent, namely depending on the scale. The obtained duality provides a way of explaining the complicated phenomenological forms of the effective fluid equation-of-state parameters that are being broadly used in the literature, since their microphysical origin may indeed lie in the non-extensive thermodynamics of spacetime. Finally, concerning the cosmological behavior, we show that at late times the effective fluid may drive the universe acceleration even in the absence of an explicit cosmological constant, and even if the initial fluid is the standard dust matter one. Similarly, at early times we obtain an effective cosmological constant which is enhanced through screening, and hence it can drive a a successful inflation without spoiling the correct late-time acceleration.

Interacting scenarios with dynamical dark energy: observational constraints and alleviation of the $H_0$ tension

We investigate interacting scenarios which belong to a wider class, since they include a dynamical dark energy component whose equation of state follows various one-parameter parametrizations. We confront them with the latest observational data from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Joint light-curve (JLA) sample from Supernovae Type Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Hubble parameter measurements from Cosmic Chronometers (CC) and a gaussian prior on the Hubble parameter $H_0$. In all examined scenarios we find a non-zero interaction, nevertheless the non-interacting case is allowed within 2$σ$. Concerning the current value of the dark energy equation of state for all combination of datasets it always lies in the phantom regime at more than two/three standard deviations. Finally, for all interacting models, independently of the combination of datasets considered, the estimated values of the present Hubble parameter $H_0$ are greater compared to the $Λ$CDM-based Planck's estimation and close to the local measurements, thus alleviating the $H_0$ tension.

Observational constraints on sign-changeable interaction models and alleviation of the $H_0$ tension

We investigate various scenarios which include interaction forms between dark matter and dark energy that exhibit sign reverse, namely where the transfer of energy between the dark fluids changes sign during evolution. We study the large-scale inhomogeneities in such interacting scenarios and we confront them with the latest astronomical data. Our analysis shows that the sign-changeable interaction models are able to produce stable perturbations. Additionally, the data seem to slightly favor a non-zero interaction, however, within $1σ$ confidence level (CL) the scenarios cannot be distinguished from non-interacting cosmologies. We find that the best-fit value of the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter lies in the phantom regime, while the quintessence region is also allowed nevertheless at more than 2$σ$ CL. Examining the effect of the interaction on the CMB TT and matter power spectra we show that while from the simple spectra it is hard to distinguish the interacting case from $Λ$CDM scenario, in the residual graphs the interaction is indeed traceable. Moreover, we find that sign-changeable interaction models can reconcile the $H_0$ tension, however the $σ_8$ tension is still persisting. Finally, we examine the validity of the laws of thermodynamics and we show that the generalized second law is always satisfied, while the second derivative of the total entropy becomes negative at late times which implies that the universe tends towards thermodynamic equilibrium.

Bayesian analysis of $f(T)$ gravity using $fσ_8$ data

We use observational data from Supernovae (SNIa) Pantheon sample, from direct Hubble constant measurements with cosmic chronometers (CC), from the Cosmic Microwave Background shift parameter $\text{CMB}_{\text{shift}}$, and from redshift space distortion ($fσ_8$) measurements, in order to constrain $f(T)$ gravity. We do not follow the common $γ$ parameterization within the semi-analytical approximation of the growth rate, in order to avoid model-dependent uncertainties. Up to our knowledge this is the first time that $f(T)$ gravity is analyzed within a Bayesian framework, and with background and perturbation behaviour considered jointly. We show that all three examined $f(T)$ models are able to describe adequately the $fσ_8$ data. Furthermore, applying the Akaike, Bayesian and Deviance Information Criteria, we conclude that all considered models are statistically equivalent, however the most efficient candidate is the exponential model, which additionally presents a small deviation from $Λ$CDM paradigm.

Holographic bounce

We investigate the bounce realization arising from the application of the holographic principle in the early universe, inspired by its well-studied late-time application. We first consider as Infrared cutoffs the particle and future event horizons, and we show that the decrease of the horizons at early times naturally increases holographic energy density at bouncing scales, while we additionally obtain the necessary null energy condition violation. Furthermore, adding a simple correction to the horizons due to the Ultraviolet cutoff we analytically obtain improved nonsingular bouncing solutions, in which the value of the minimum scale factor is controlled by the UV correction. Finally, we construct generalized scenarios, arisen from the use of extended Infrared cutoffs, and as specific examples we consider cutoffs that can reproduce $F(R)$ gravity, and the bounce realization within it.

Dynamical system analysis at background and perturbation levels: Quintessence in severe disadvantage comparing to $Λ$CDM

We perform for the first time a dynamical system analysis of both the background and perturbation equations, of $Λ$CDM cosmology and quintessence scenario with an exponential potential. In the former case the perturbations do not change the stability of the late-time attractor of the background equations, and the system still results in the dark-energy dominated, de Sitter solution, having passed from the correct dark-matter era with $γ\approx6/11$. However, in the case of quintessence the incorporation of perturbations changes the stability and properties of the background evolution, and the only conditionally stable points present either an exponentially increasing matter clustering not favored by observations, or Laplacian instabilities, and thus not physically interesting. This result is a severe disadvantage of quintessence cosmology comparing to $Λ$CDM paradigm.

Conformal Gravity and Transformations in the Symmetric Teleparallel Framework

Conformal symmetries appear in many parts of physics and play a unique role in exploring the Universe. In this work, we consider the possibility of constructing conformal theories of gravity in the Symmetric Teleparallel Gravity framework, where gravitation is expressed through non-metricity rather than curvature or torsion. We demonstrate that it is possible to formulate a family of conformal theories with second-order field equations and have the metric tensor as the fundamental variable. Moreover, we consider the addition of a scalar field to the theory, and compare the results to the Teleparallel Gravity setting. Finally, we present the scalar-tensor representation of modified symmetric teleparallel theories, and amongst others, we show that there is an interesting sub-case that has the possibility of playing the role of dark energy.

Polarization of gravitational waves in symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity and their modifications

Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) offers an interesting avenue to formulate a theory of gravitation that relies neither on curvature nor torsion but only on non-metricity Q. Given the growing number of observations of gravitational waves (GWs) and their use to explore gravitational theories, in this work we investigate the GWs in various extensions of STG, focusing on their speed and polarization. For the simple STG, for theories that arise from the generalized irreducible decomposition of STG, and for f(Q) gravity, we obtain the same speed and polarizations with general relativity. For scalar - non-metricity theories, where a scalar field is nonminimally coupled to f(Q), we find that GWs propagate in general with a speed different than the one of light. Finally, for the case of f(Q,B) gravity we find that new polarizations do appear.

Holographic inflation

We apply the holographic principle at the early universe, obtaining an inflation realization of holographic origin. Such a consideration has equal footing with its well-studied late-time application, and moreover the decrease of the horizons at early times naturally increases holographic energy density at inflationary scales. Taking as Infrared cutoff the particle or future event horizons, and adding a simple correction due to the Ultraviolet cutoff, whose role is non-negligible at the high energy scales of inflation, we result in a holographic inflation scenario that is very efficient in incorporating inflationary requirements and predictions. We first extract analytically the solution of the Hubble function in an implicit form, which gives a scale factor evolution of the desired e-foldings. Furthermore, we analytically calculate the Hubble slow-roll parameters and then the inflation-related observables, such as the scalar spectral index and its running, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the tensor spectral index. Confronting the predictions with Planck 2018 observations we show that the agreement is perfect and in particular deep inside the 1$σ$ region.

Inflation from fermions with curvature-dependent mass

A model of inflation realization driven by fermions with curvature-dependent mass is studied. Such a term is derived from the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of gravity (CCGG) incorporating Dirac fermions. We obtain an initial de Sitter phase followed by a successful exit, and moreover, we acquire the subsequent thermal history, with an effective matter era, followed finally by a dark-energy epoch. This behavior is a result of the effective `weakening' of gravity at early times, due to the decreased curvature-dependent fermion mass. Through the perturbation level, we obtain the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, which are in agreement with the Planck observations. The efficiency of inflation from fermions with curvature-dependent mass, at both the background and perturbation level, reveals the capabilities of the scenario and makes it a good candidate for the description of nature.

Cosmology in cubic and $f(P)$ gravity

We construct cubic gravity and its $f(P)$ extension and we investigate their early- and late-time cosmological applications. Cubic gravity is based on a particular invariant $P$, constructed from cubic contractions of the Riemann tensor, under three requirements: (i) the resulting theory possesses a spectrum identical to that of general relativity, (ii) it is neither topological nor trivial in four dimensions, and (iii) it is defined such that it is independent of the dimensions. Relaxing the last condition and restricting the parameters of cubic gravity we can obtain second-order field equations in a cosmological background. We show that at early times one can obtain inflationary, de Sitter solutions, which are driven by an effective cosmological constant constructed purely from the cubic terms of the simple cubic or $f(P)$ gravity. Concerning late-time evolution, the new terms constitute an effective dark-energy sector and we show that the Universe experiences the usual thermal history and the onset of late-time acceleration. In the case of $f(P)$ gravity, depending on the choice of parameters, we find that the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can be quintessencelike, phantomlike or it can experience the phantom-divide crossing during the evolution, even if an explicit cosmological constant is absent.

Evading the theoretical no-go theorem for nonsingular bounces in Horndeski/Galileon cosmology

We show that a nonsingular bounce, free of ghosts and gradient instabilities, can be realized in the framework of Horndeski or generalized Galileon cosmology. In particular, we first review that the theoretical no-go theorem, which states that the above is impossible, is based on two very strong assumptions, namely that a particular quantity cannot be discontinuous during the bounce, and that there is only one bounce. However, as we show in the present work, the first assumption not only can be violated in a general Horndeski/Galileon scenario, but also it is necessarily violated at the bounce point within the subclass of Horndeski/Galileon gravity in which $K(ϕ,X)$ becomes zero at $X=0$. Additionally, concerning the second assumption, which is crucial in improved versions of the theorem which claim that even if a nonlinear free of pathologies can be realized it will lead to pathologies in the infinite past or infinite future, we show that if needed it can be evaded by considering cyclic cosmology, with an infinite sequence of nonsingular bounces free of pathologies, which forbids the universe to reach the "problematic" regime at infinite past or infinite future. Finally, in order to make the analysis more transparent we provide explicit examples where nonsingular bounces without theoretical pathologies can be achieved.

Rotating AdS black holes in Maxwell-$f(T)$ gravity

The investigation on higher-dimensional AdS black holes is of great importance under the light of AdS/CFT correspondence. In this work we study static and rotating, uncharged and charged, AdS black holes in higher-dimensional $f(T)$ gravity, focusing on the power-law ansatz which is the most viable according to observations. We extract AdS solutions characterized by an effective cosmological constant that depends on the parameters of the $f(T)$ modification, as well as on the electric charge, even if the explicit cosmological constant is absent. These solutions do not have a general relativity or an uncharged limit, hence they correspond to a novel solution class, whose features arise solely from the torsional modification alongside the Maxwell sector incorporation. We examine the singularities of the solutions, calculating the values of various curvature and torsion invariants, finding that they do possess the central singularity, which however is softer comparing to standard general relativity case due to the $f(T)$ effect. Additionally, we investigate the horizons structure, showing that the solutions possess an inner Cauchy horizon as well as an outer event one, nevertheless for suitably large electric charge and small mass we obtain the appearance of a naked singularity. Finally, we calculate the energy of the obtained solutions, showing that the $f(T)$ modification affects the mass term.

Modified cosmology from extended entropy with varying exponent

We present a modified cosmological scenario that arises from the application of non-extensive thermodynamics with varying exponent. We extract the modified Friedmann equations, which contain new terms quantified by the non-extensive exponent, possessing standard $Λ$CDM cosmology as a subcase. Concerning the universe evolution at late times we obtain an effective dark energy sector, and we show that we can acquire the usual thermal history, with the successive sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, with the effective dark-energy equation-of-state parameter being in the quintessence or in the phantom regime. The interesting feature of the scenario is that the above behaviors can be obtained even if the explicit cosmological constant is set to zero, namely they arise purely from the extra terms. Additionally, we confront the model with Supernovae type Ia and Hubble parameter observational data, and we show that the agreement is very good. Concerning the early-time universe we obtain inflationary de Sitter solutions, which are driven by an effective cosmological constant that includes the new terms of non-extensive thermodynamics. This effective screening can provide a description of both inflation and late-time acceleration with the same parameter choices, which is a significant advantage.

Bounce cosmology in generalized modified gravities

We investigate the bounce realization in the framework of generalized modified gravities arising from Finsler and Finsler-like geometries. In particular, the richer intrinsic geometrical structure is reflected in the appearance of extra degrees of freedom in the Friedmann equations that can drive the bounce. We examine various Finsler and Finsler-like constructions. In the cases of general very special relativity as well as of Finsler-like gravity on the tangent bundle we show that a bounce cannot be easily obtained. However, in the Finsler-Randers space the induced scalar anisotropy can fulfill the bounce conditions and bouncing solutions are easily obtained. Finally, for the general class of theories that include a nonlinear connection a new scalar field is induced, leading to a scalar-tensor structure that can easily drive a bounce. These features reveal the capabilities of Finsler and Finsler-like geometries.

Observational constraints on one-parameter dynamical dark-energy parametrizations and the $H_0$ tension

The phenomenological parametrizations of dark-energy (DE) equation of state can be very helpful, since they allow for the investigation of its cosmological behavior despite the fact that its underlying theory is unknown. However, although there has been a large amount of research on DE parametrizations which involve two or more free parameters, the one-parameter parametrizations seem to be underestimated. We perform a detailed observational confrontation of five one-parameter DE models, with observational data from cosmic microwave background (CMB), Joint light-curve analysis sample from Supernovae Type Ia observations (JLA), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) distance measurements, and cosmic chronometers (CC). We find that all models favor a phantom DE equation of state at present time, while they lead to $H_0$ values in perfect agreement with its direct measurements and therefore they offer an alleviation to the $H_0$-tension. Finally, performing a Bayesian analysis we show that although $Λ$CDM cosmology is still favored, one-parameter DE models have similar or better efficiency in fitting the data comparing to two-parameter DE parametrizations, and thus they deserve a thorough investigation.

Holographic dark energy through Tsallis entropy

In order to apply holography and entropy relations to the whole universe, which is a gravitational and thus nonextensive system, for consistency one should use the generalized definition for the universe horizon entropy, namely Tsallis nonextensive entropy. We formulate Tsallis holographic dark energy, which is a generalization of standard holographic dark energy quantified by a new dimensionless parameter $δ$, possessing the latter as a particular sub-case. We provide a simple differential equation for the dark energy density parameter, as well as an analytical expression for its equation-of-state parameter. In this scenario the universe exhibits the usual thermal history, namely the successive sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, before resulting in a complete dark energy domination in the far future. Additionally, the dark energy equation-of-state parameter presents a rich behavior and, according to the value of $δ$, it can be quintessence-like, phantom-like, or experience the phantom-divide crossing before or after the present time. Finally, we confront the scenario with Supernovae type Ia and Hubble parameter observational data, and we show that the agreement is very good, with $δ$ preferring a value slightly larger than its standard value 1.
