Novel Cu-based dz2 order at a YBa2Cu3O7/ manganite interface

The interplay of nearly degenerate orders in quantum materials can lead to a myriad of emergent phases. A prominent case is that of the high-Tc cuprates for which the relationship between superconductivity and a short-ranged, incommensurate charge density wave in the CuO2 planes involving the dx2-y2 orbitals (Cu-CDW) is a subject of great current interest. Strong modifications of the strength and coherence of this Cu-CDW have been achieved by applying large magnetic fields, uniaxial pressure, or via the interfacial coupling in cuprate/manganite multilayers. However, such modifications do not alter the dominant orbital character. Here we investigate cuprate/manganite multilayers with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and show that a new kind of Cu-based density wave order can be induced that has not been previously observed in the cuprates. This order has an unusually small wave vector of Q = 0.096 reciprocal lattice units (r.l.u.), a large correlation length of about 40 nm, and a predominant dz2 orbital character, instead of the typical dx2-y2 character. Its appearance is determined by the hole doping of the manganite which is a key parameter controlling the interfacial charge transfer and orbital reconstruction. We anticipate that the observation of a previously unknown type of density wave order at the YBCO interface will allow for fresh perspectives on the enigmatic relation between superconductivity and charge order (CO) in the cuprates.

Orbital dynamics during an ultrafast insulator to metal transition

Phase transitions driven by ultrashort laser pulses have attracted interest both for understanding the fundamental physics of phase transitions and for potential new data storage or device applications. In many cases these transitions involve transient states that are different from those seen in equilibrium. To understand the microscopic properties of these states, it is useful to develop elementally selective probing techniques that operate in the time domain. Here we show fs-time-resolved measurements of V Ledge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS) from the insulating phase of the Mott- Hubbard material V2O3 after ultrafast laser excitation. The probed orbital excitations within the d-shell of the V ion show a sub-ps time response, which evolve at later times to a state that appears electronically indistinguishable from the high-temperature metallic state. Our results demonstrate the potential for RIXS spectroscopy to study the ultrafast orbital dynamics in strongly correlated materials.

Orbital-selective confinement effect of Ru $4d$ orbitals in SrRuO$_3$ ultrathin film

The electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin film with thickness from 50 to 1 unit cell (u.c.) is investigated via the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique at the O K-edge to unravel the intriguing interplay of orbital and charge degrees of freedom. We found that orbital-selective quantum confinement effect (QCE) induces the splitting of Ru $4d$ orbitals. At the same time, we observed a clear suppression of the electron-hole continuum across the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) occurring at the 4 u.c. sample. From these two clear observations we conclude that QCE gives rise to a Mott insulating phase in ultrathin SrRuO$_3$ films. Our interpretation of the RIXS spectra is supported by the configuration interaction calculations of RuO$_6$ clusters.

Role of the Ce valence in the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ revealed by Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$, in which the superconductivity of the BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetism of the CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer are induced by the F-doping, in order to investigate the impact of the F-doping on the local electronic and lattice structures. The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-doping and completely disappears for $x>0.4$ where the system shows the superconductivity and the ferromagnetism. The results suggest that suppression of Ce-S-Bi coupling channel by the F-doping appears to drive the system from the valence fluctuation regime to the Kondo-like regime, leading to the coexistence of the superconducting BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetic CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer.
