Attractive Hubbard Model on a Honeycomb Lattice

We study the attractive fermionic Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By increasing the interaction strength U (relative to the hopping parameter t) at half-filling and zero temperature, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at 5.0 < U_c/t < 5.1 from a semi-metal to a phase displaying simultaneously superfluid behavior and density order. Doping away from half-filling, and increasing the interaction strength at finite but low temperature T, the system always appears to be a superfluid exhibiting a crossover between a BCS and a molecular regime. These different regimes are analyzed by studying the spectral function. The formation of pairs and the emergence of phase coherence throughout the sample are studied as U is increased and T is lowered.

Pair formation and collapse in imbalanced Fermion populations with unequal masses

We present an exact Quantum Monte Carlo study of the effect of unequal masses on pair formation in Fermionic systems with population imbalance loaded into optical lattices. We have considered three forms of the attractive interaction and find in all cases that the system is unstable and collapses as the mass difference increases and that the ground state becomes an inhomogeneous collapsed state. We also address the question of canonical vs grand canonical ensemble and its role, if any, in stabilizing certain phases.

Magnetic and Transport Properties of a Coupled Hubbard Bilayer with Electron and Hole Doping

The single band, two dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian has been extensively studied as a model for high temperature superconductivity. While Quantum Monte Carlo simulations within the dynamic cluster approximation are now providing considerable evidence for a d-wave superconducting state at low temperature, such a transition remains well out of reach of finite lattice simulations because of the "sign problem". We show here that a bilayer Hubbard model, in which one layer is electron doped and one layer is hole doped, can be studied to lower temperatures and exhibits an interesting signal of d-wave pairing. The results of our simulations bear resemblance to a recent report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of Ba$_2$Ca$_3$Cu$_4$O$_8$F$_2$ which contains both electron and hole doped CuO$_2$ planes. We also explore the phase diagram of bilayer models in which each sheet is at half-filling.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of a Dynamic Hubbard Model

The `dynamic' Hubbard Hamiltonian describes interacting fermions on a lattice whose on-site repulsion is modulated by a coupling to a fluctuating bosonic field. We investigate one such model, introduced by Hirsch, using the determinant Quantum Monte Carlo method. Our key result is that the extended s-wave pairing vertex, repulsive in the usual static Hubbard model, becomes attractive as the coupling to the fluctuating Bose field increases. The sign problem prevents us from exploring a low enough temperature to see if a superconducting transition occurs. We also observe a stabilization of antiferromagnetic correlations and the Mott gap near half-filling, and a near linear behavior of the energy as a function of particle density which indicates a tendency toward phase separation.

Mott insulators and correlated superfluids in ultracold Bose-Fermi mixtures

We study the effects of interaction between bosons and fermions in a Bose-Fermi mixtures loaded in an optical lattice. We concentrate on the destruction of a bosonic Mott phase driven by repulsive interaction between bosons and fermions. Once the Mott phase is destroyed, the system enters a superfluid phase where the movements of bosons and fermions are correlated. We show that this phase has simultaneously correlations reminiscent of a conventional superfluid and of a pseudo-spin density wave order.

Metallic phase in the two-dimensional ionic Hubbard model

We investigate the phases of the ionic Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). At half-filling, when the interaction strength or the staggered potential dominate we find Mott and band insulators, respectively. When these two energies are of the same order we find a metallic region. Charge and magnetic structure factors demonstrate the presence of antiferromagnetism only in the Mott region, although the externally imposed density modulation is present everywhere in the phase diagram. Away from half-filling, other insulating phases are found. Kinetic energy correlations do not give clear signals for the existence of a bond-ordered phase.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of a one-dimensional phase-fluctuating condensate

We study numerically the low temperature behavior of a one-dimensional Bose gas trapped in an optical lattice. For a sufficient number of particles and weak repulsive interactions, we find a clear regime of temperatures where density fluctuations are negligible but phase fluctuations are considerable, i.e., a quasicondensate. In the weakly interacting limit, our results are in very good agreement with those obtained using a mean-field approximation. In coupling regimes beyond the validity of mean-field approaches, a phase-fluctuating condensate also appears, but the phase-correlation properties are qualitatively different. It is shown that quantum depletion plays an important role.

Supersolid phases in the one dimensional extended soft core Bosonic Hubbard model

We present results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the soft core extended bosonic Hubbard model in one dimension exhibiting the presence of supersolid phases similar to those recently found in two dimensions. We find that in one and two dimensions, the insulator-supersolid transition has dynamic critical exponent z=2 whereas the first order insulator-superfluid transition in two dimensions is replaced by a continuous transition with z=1 in one dimension. We present evidence that this transition is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class and discuss the mechanism behind this difference. The simultaneous presence of two types of quasi long range order results in two soliton-like dips in the excitation spectrum.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of an Interaction-Driven Band Insulator to Metal Transition

We study the transitions from band insulator to metal to Mott insulator in the ionic Hubbard model on a two dimensional square lattice using determinant Quantum Monte Carlo. Evaluation of the temperature dependence of the conductivity demonstrates that the metallic region extends for a finite range of interaction values. The Mott phase at strong coupling is accompanied by antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Inclusion of these intersite correlations changes the phase diagram qualitatively compared to dynamical mean field theory.

The magnetic susceptibility of exchange-disordered antiferromagnetic finite chains

The low-temperature behavior of the static magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ of exchange-disordered antiferromagnetic spin chains is investigated. It is shown that for a relatively small and even number of spins in the chain, two exchange distributions which are expected to occur in nanochains of P donors in silicon lead to qualitatively distinct behaviors of the low-temperature susceptibility. As a consequence, magnetic measurements might be useful to characterize whether a given sample meets the requirements compatible with Kane's original proposalfor the exchange gates in a silicon-based quantum computer hardware. We also explore the dependence of $χ(T)$ on the number of spins in the chain as it increases towards the thermodynamic limit, where any degree or distribution of disorder leads to the same low-temperature scaling behavior. We identify a crossover regime where the two distributions of disorder may not be clearly differentiated, but the characteristic scaling of the thermodynamic limit has not yet been reached.

Solitons in Trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

We use Quantum Monte Carlo simulations to show the presence and study the properties of solitons in the one dimensional soft-core bosonic Hubbard model with near neighbor interaction in traps. We show that when the half-filled Charge Density Wave (CDW) phase is doped, solitons are produced and quasi long range order established. We discuss the implications of these results for the presence and robustness of this solitonic phase in Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) on one dimensional optical lattices in traps and study the associated excitation spectrum. The density profile exhibits the coexistence of Mott insulator, CDW, and superfluid regions.

Coexistence of s-wave Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism

We study the phase diagram of a new model that exhibits a first order transition between s-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. The model, a generalized Hubbard model augmented with competing spin-spin and pair-pair interactions, was investigated using the projector Quantum Monte Carlo method. Upon varying the Hubbard $U$ from attractive to repulsive we find a first order phase transition between superconducting and antiferromagnetic states.

Spin and charge dynamics of stripes in doped Mott insulators

We study spin and charge dynamics of stripes in doped Mott insulators by considering a two-dimensional Hubbard model with N fermion flavors. For N =2 we recover the normal one-band model while for N -> infty a spin density wave mean-field solution. For all band fillings, lattice topologies and N= 4 n the model may be solved by means of Monte Carlo methods without encountering the sign problem. At N=4 and in the vicinity of the Mott insulator, the single particle density of states shows a gap. Within this gap and on rectangular topologies of sizes up to 30 X 12 we find gapless spin collective modes centered around q = (π\pm ε_x,π\pm ε_y) as well as charge modes centered around q = (\pm 2 ε_x, \pm 2 ε_y), q = (\pm ε_x, \pm ε_y) and q = (0,0). ε_{x,y} depends on the lattice topology and doping.

Constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the zero-temperature disordered two-dimensional Hubbard model

We study the effects of disorder on long-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the half-filled, two dimensional, repulsive Hubbard model at T=0. A mean field approach is first employed to gain a qualitative picture of the physics and to guide our choice for a trial wave function in a constrained path quantum Monte Carlo (CPQMC) method that allows for a more accurate treatment of correlations. Within the mean field calculation, we observe both Anderson and Mott insulating antiferromagnetic phases. There are transitions to a paramagnet only for relatively weak coupling, U < 2t in the case of bond disorder, and U < 4t in the case of on-site disorder. Using ground-state CPQMC we demonstrate that this mean field approach significantly overestimates magnetic order. For U=4t, we find a critical bond disorder of Vc = (1.6 +- 0.4)t even though within mean field theory no paramagnetic phase is found for this value of the interaction. In the site disordered case, we find a critical disorder of Vc = (5.0 +- 0.5)t at U=4t.

Nature of the quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional hardcore boson model

We use two Quantum Monte Carlo algorithms to map out the phase diagram of the two-dimensional hardcore boson Hubbard model with near ($V_1$) and next near ($V_2$) neighbor repulsion. At half filling we find three phases: Superfluid (SF), checkerboard solid and striped solid depending on the relative values of $V_1$, $V_2$ and the kinetic energy. Doping away from half filling, the checkerboard solid undergoes phase separation: The superfluid and solid phases co-exist but not as a single thermodynamic phase. As a function of doping, the transition from the checkerboard solid is therefore first order. In contrast, doping the striped solid away from half filling instead produces a striped supersolid phase: Co-existence of density order with superfluidity as a single phase. One surprising result is that the entire line of transitions between the SF and checkerboard solid phases at half filling appears to exhibit dynamical O(3) symmetry restoration. The transitions appear to be in the same universality class as the special Heisenberg point even though this symmetry is explicitly broken by the $V_2$ interaction.

Exact duality and dual Monte-Carlo simulation for the Bosonic Hubbard model

We derive the exact dual to the Bosonic Hubbard model. The dual variables take the form of conserved current loops (local and global). Previously this has been done only for the very soft core model at very high density. No such approximations are made here. In particular, the dual of the hard core model is shown to have a very simple form which is then used to construct an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm which is quite similar to the World Line algorithm but with some important differences. For example, with this algorithm we can measure easily the correlation function of the order parameter (Green function), a quantity which is extremely difficult to measure with the standard World Line algorithm. We demonstrate the algorithm for the one and two dimensional hardcore Bosonic Hubbard models. We present new results especially for the Green function and zero mode filling fraction in the two dimensional hardcore model.
