Blow up and regularity for fractal Burgers equation

The paper is a comprehensive study of the existence, uniqueness, blow up and regularity properties of solutions of the Burgers equation with fractional dissipation. We prove existence of the finite time blow up for the power of Laplacian $α< 1/2,$ and global existence as well as analyticity of solution for $α\geq 1/2.$ We also prove the existence of solutions with very rough initial data $u_0 \in L^p,$ $1 < p < \infty.$ Many of the results can be extended to a more general class of equations, including the surface quasi-geostrophic equation.

The power law for the Buffon needle probability of the four-corner Cantor set

Let $C_n$ be the $n$-th generation in the construction of the middle-half Cantor set. The Cartesian square $K_n$ of $C_n$ consists of $4^n$ squares of side-length $4^{-n}$. The chance that a long needle thrown at random in the unit square will meet $K_n$ is essentially the average length of the projections of $K_n$, also known as the Favard length of $K_n$. A classical theorem of Besicovitch implies that the Favard length of $K_n$ tends to zero. It is still an open problem to determine its exact rate of decay. Until recently, the only explicit upper bound was $\exp(- c\log_* n)$, due to Peres and Solomyak. ($\log_* n$ is the number of times one needs to take log to obtain a number less than 1 starting from $n$). We obtain a power law bound by combining analytic and combinatorial ideas.

On the Number of Nodal Domains of Random Spherical Harmonics

Let N(f) be a number of nodal domains of a random Gaussian spherical harmonic f of degree n. We prove that as n grows to infinity, the mean of N(f)/n^2 tends to a positive constant, and that N(f)/n^2 exponentially concentrates around that constant. This result is consistent with predictions made by Bogomolny and Schmit using a percolation-like model for nodal domains of random Gaussian plane waves.

Transportation to random zeroes by the gradient flow

We consider the zeroes of a random Gaussian Entire Function f and show that their basins under the gradient flow of the random potential U partition the complex plane into domains of equal area. We find three characteristic exponents 1, 8/5, and 4 of this random partition: the probability that the diameter of a particular basin is greater than R is exponentially small in R; the probability that a given point z lies at a distance larger than R from the zero it is attracted to decays as exp(-R^{8/5}); and the probability that, after throwing away 1% of the area of the basin, its diameter is still larger than R decays as exp(-R^4). We also introduce a combinatorial procedure that modifies a small portion of each basin in such a way that the probability that the diameter of a particular modified basin is greater than R decays only slightly slower than exp(-cR^4).

Sign and area in nodal geometry of Laplace eigenfunctions

The paper deals with asymptotic nodal geometry for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on closed surfaces. Given an eigenfunction f corresponding to a large eigenvalue, we study local asymmetry of the distribution of sign(f) with respect to the surface area. It is measured as follows: take any disc centered at the nodal line {f=0}, and pick at random a point in this disc. What is the probability that the function assumes a positive value at the chosen point? We show that this quantity may decay logarithmically as the eigenvalue goes to infinity, but never faster than that. In other words, only a mild local asymmetry may appear. The proof combines methods due to Donnelly-Fefferman and Nadirashvili with a new result on harmonic functions in the unit disc.

Lower bounds for quasianalytic functions, II. The Bernstein quasianalytic functions

Let F be a class of functions with the uniqueness property: if a function f in F vanishes on a set of positive measure, then f is the zero function. In many instances, we would like to have a quantitative version of this property, e.g. a lower bound for |f| outside a small exceptional set. Such estimates are well-known and useful for polynomials, complex- and real-analytic functions, exponential polynomials. In this work we prove similar results for the Denjoy-Carleman and the Bernstein classes of quasianalytic functions. In the first part (this arXiv:math.CA/0208233), we considered quasianalytically smooth functions. Here, we deal with classes of functions characterized by exponentially fast approximation by polynomials whose degrees belong to a given very lacunar sequence. We also prove the polynomial spreading lemma and a comparison lemma which are of a certain interest on their own.

Weak type estimates and Cotlar inequalities for Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces

In the paper we consider Calderón-Zygmund operators in nonhomogeneous spaces. We are going to prove the analogs of classical results for homogeneous spaces. Namely, we prove that a Calderón-Zygmund operator is of weak type if it is bounded in $L^2$. We also prove several versions of Cotlar's inequality for maximal singular operator. One version of Cotlar's inequality (a simpler one) is proved in Euclidean setting, another one in a more abstract setting when Besicovich covering lemma is not available. We obtain also the weak type of maximal singular operator from these inequalities.
