Secure Relay Low-Altitude Networks via Hybrid Fixed-Position and Rotatable Antenna Arrays

In this paper, a relay network with hybrid fixed-position and rotatable antenna arrays is proposed. The deployment of rotatable arrays in conventional relay networks is considered to provide more secure communications for low-altitude economy applications. Specifically, both the base station and the relay station are equipped with fixed-position antenna arrays and rotatable arrays to serve ground users and aerial users, respectively. To address the challenge of multi-user interference, a low-cost reconfigurable intelligent surface is exploited as a candidate path. Accordingly, under constraints on transmit power, user quality of service, rotatable range, and path selection, the objective is to maximize the worst-case secrecy rate (SR) through joint beamforming, power allocation, and rotatable antenna orientation design. First, the SR performance in the \textcolor{black}{single ground-aerial user pair scenario} is investigated, and a step-by-step leakage-based scheme is proposed. Then, the general multi-user scenario is studied, and a Distributional Soft Actor-Critic with Three refinements (DSAC-T)-based learning scheme, which supports hybrid discrete and continuous actions, is proposed to maximize the worst-case SR. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. The proposed schemes achieve approximately a twofold improvement in SR performance compared to isotropic antennas. \textcolor{black}{The proposed system can achieve approximately 99.7\% power saving, 55\% antenna saving, and can serve more users.}

Unified Constrained Geometric Configuration Optimization for Source Localization Systems: A Riemannian Manifold-Based Approach

Time of arrival (TOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA), received signal strength (RSS), received signal strength difference (RSSD) and angle of arrival (AOA) are commonly used techniques for source localization. The positioning accuracy of these systems depends heavily on the geometric configuration of sensors, which is typically constrained by practical conditions. This paper presents a unified framework for optimizing sensor geometry across all five localization systems, explicitly incorporating both distance and angle constraints on sensor positions. First, the Cramér-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) of these systems are transformed to obtain a unified expression. Based on this expression, a unified constrained geometric configuration optimization problem is formulated. The problem is then simplified into a compact form by replacing the sensor-target angles with an orientation matrix. Subsequently, a Riemannian manifold-based constrained geometric configuration optimization algorithm (RM-CGCOA) is proposed to optimize the sensor-target distances and the orientation matrix. This algorithm casts the orientation matrix onto a product manifold of unit circles. An adaptive pullback is further proposed to strictly enforce angle-related inequality constraints, ensuring that all iterates remain feasible when updating the orientation matrix via the Riemannian gradient. Within RM-CGCOA, analytical optimal distances are derived for TOA, TDOA, RSS and AOA, whereas for RSSD, the distances are updated using projected gradient descent (PGD) together with the orientation matrix. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed RM-CGCOA consistently achieves a significantly lower position error bound (PEB) compared with the existing strategies and yields a similar PEB to the near-optimal search algorithm, but with a much faster running time.

DRL-Based Secure Transmission for Rotatable Antenna-Enabled Low-Altitude ISAC Systems

The development of the low-altitude economy has driven innovation in intelligent antenna systems within ISAC systems. In this paper, we investigate a Rotatable Antenna (RA)-enabled low-altitude integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. In practical terms, the RA array can flexibly adjust the three-dimensional (3D) beam direction of each antenna to enhance array directional gain, thereby improving the communication security of legitimate mobile users against potential eavesdropping risks from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Our objective is to maximize the minimum secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing transmit beamforming matrix, transmit and receive RAs' pointing matrices. To this end, an multi-agent proximal policy optimization with three improvement mechanisms (MAPPO-T) algorithm is proposed to cope with the issue of complex multi-agent collaborative decision-making problem. Simulation results show that the introduction of RAs can effectively improve SR performance compared to the traditional fixed orientation antenna (FOA)-based system. In addition, the proposed MAPPO-T algorithm validate the superiority compared to the standard MAPPO algorithm.

Federated Learning-Based Localization with Heterogeneous Fingerprint Database

Fingerprint-based localization plays an important role in indoor location-based services, where the position information is usually collected in distributed clients and gathered in a centralized server. However, the overloaded transmission as well as the potential risk of divulging private information burdens the application.Owning the ability to address these challenges, federated learning (FL)-based fingerprinting localization comes into people's sights, which aims to train a global model while keeping raw data locally. However, in distributed machine learning (ML) scenarios, the unavoidable database heterogeneity usually degrades the performance of existing FL-based localization algorithm (FedLoc). In this paper, we first characterize the database heterogeneity with a computable metric, i.e., the area of convex hull, and verify it by experimental results. Then, a novel heterogeneous FL-based localization algorithm with the area of convex hull-based aggregation (FedLoc-AC) is proposed. Extensive experimental results, including real-word cases are conducted. We can conclude that the proposed FedLoc-AC can achieve an obvious prediction gain compared to FedLoc in heterogeneous scenarios and has almost the same prediction error with it in homogeneous scenarios. Moreover, the extension of FedLoc-AC in multi-floor cases is proposed and verified.

Providing Location Information at Edge Networks: A Federated Learning-Based Approach

Recently, the development of mobile edge computing has enabled exhilarating edge artificial intelligence (AI) with fast response and low communication cost. The location information of edge devices is essential to support the edge AI in many scenarios, like smart home, intelligent transportation systems and integrated health care. Taking advantages of deep learning intelligence, the centralized machine learning (ML)-based positioning technique has received heated attention from both academia and industry. However, some potential issues, such as location information leakage and huge data traffic, limit its application. Fortunately, a newly emerging privacy-preserving distributed ML mechanism, named federated learning (FL), is expected to alleviate these concerns. In this article, we illustrate a framework of FL-based localization system as well as the involved entities at edge networks. Moreover, the advantages of such system are elaborated. On practical implementation of it, we investigate the field-specific issues associated with system-level solutions, which are further demonstrated over a real-word database. Moreover, future challenging open problems in this field are outlined.

Optimal Measurement of Drone Swarm in RSS-based Passive Localization with Region Constraints

Passive geolocation by multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) covers a wide range of military and civilian applications including rescue, wild life tracking and electronic warfare. The sensor-target geometry is known to significantly affect the localization precision. The existing sensor placement strategies mainly work on the cases without any constraints on the sensors locations. However, UAVs cannot fly/hover simply in arbitrary region due to realistic constraints, such as the geographical limitations, the security issues, and the max flying speed. In this paper, optimal geometrical configurations of UAVs in received signal strength (RSS)-based localization under region constraints are investigated. Employing the D-optimal criteria, i.e., minimizing the determinate of Fisher information matrix (FIM), such optimal problem is formulated. Based on the rigorous algebra and geometrical derivations, optimal and also closed form configurations of UAVs under different flying states are proposed. Finally, the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed configurations are demonstrated by simulation examples.

Joint Optimization for RIS-Assisted Wireless Communications: From Physical and Electromagnetic Perspectives

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system.

Communication-efficient Coordinated RSS-based Distributed Passive Localization via Drone Cluster

Recently, passive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) localization has become popular due to mobility and convenience. In this paper, we consider a scenario of using distributed drone cluster to estimate the position of a passive emitter via received signal strength (RSS). First, a distributed majorizeminimization (DMM) RSS-based localization method is proposed. To accelerate its convergence, a tight upper bound of the objective function from the primary one is derived. Furthermore, to reduce communication overhead, a distributed estimation scheme using the Fisher information matrix (DEF) is presented, with only requiring one-round communication between edge UAVs and center UAV. Additionally, a local search solution is used as the initial value of DEF. Simulation results show that the proposed DMM performs better than the existing distributed Gauss-Newton method (DGN) in terms of root of mean square error (RMSE) under a limited low communication overhead constraint. Moreover, the proposed DEF performs much better than MM in terms of RMSE, but has a higher computational complexity than the latter.

An ADMM-Based Geometric Configuration Optimization in RSSD-Based Source Localization By UAVs with Spread Angle Constraint

Deploying multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to locate a signal-emitting source covers a wide range of military and civilian applications like rescue and target tracking. It is well known that the UAVs-source (sensors-target) geometry, namely geometric configuration, significantly affects the final localization accuracy. This paper focuses on the geometric configuration optimization for received signal strength difference (RSSD)-based passive source localization by drone swarm. Different from prior works, this paper considers a general measuring condition where the spread angle of drone swarm centered on the source is constrained. Subject to this constraint, a geometric configuration optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the determinant of Fisher information matrix (FIM) is formulated. After transforming this problem using matrix theory, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based optimization framework is proposed. To solve the subproblems in this framework, two global optimal solutions based on the Von Neumann matrix trace inequality theorem and majorize-minimize (MM) algorithm are proposed respectively. Finally, the effectiveness as well as the practicality of the proposed ADMM-based optimization algorithm are demonstrated by extensive simulations.

Millimeter-Wave Position Sensing Using Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Positioning Error Bound and Phase Shift Configuration

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) positioning has emerged as a promising technology for next-generation intelligent systems. The advent of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has revolutionized high-precision mmWave localization by enabling dynamic manipulation of wireless propagation environments. This paper investigates a three-dimensional (3D) multi-input single-output (MISO) mmWave positioning system assisted by multiple RISs. We introduce a measurement framework incorporating sequential RIS activation and directional beamforming to fully exploit virtual line-of-sight (VLoS) paths. The theoretical performance limits are rigorously analyzed through derivation of the Fisher information and subsequent positioning error bound (PEB). To minimize the PEB, two distinct optimization approaches are proposed for continuous and discrete phase shift configurations of RISs. For continuous phase shifts, a Riemannian manifold-based optimization algorithm is proposed. For discrete phase shifts, a heuristic algorithm incorporating the grey wolf optimizer is proposed. Extensive numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in reducing the PEB and validate the improvement in positioning accuracy achieved by multiple RISs.

A Fingerprint Database Generation Method for RIS-Assisted Indoor Positioning

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technology to enhance indoor wireless communication and sensing performance. However, the construction of reliable received signal strength (RSS)-based fingerprint databases for RIS-assisted indoor positioning remains an open challenge due to the lack of realistic and spatially consistent channel modeling methods. In this paper, we propose a novel method with open-source code for generating RIS-assisted RSS fingerprint databases. Our method captures the complex RIS-assisted multipath behaviors by extended cluster-based channel modeling and the physical and electromagnetic properties of RIS and transmitter (Tx). And the spatial consistency is incorporated when simulating the fingerprint data collection across neighboring positions. Moreover, an effective sorting algorithm is proposed to solve the online synchronization issue, a closed-form RIS phase configuration strategy is proposed to improve the localization accuracy, and the modeling method of mutual coupling (MC) effect is provided. Extensive simulations are conducted to evaluate the fingerprint database generated by the proposed method. And the positioning performance on the database using different algorithms is analyzed, providing valuable insights for the system design.

Covert Semantic Transmission in ISAC: Dual-Functional Waveform Design and Rectified Flow-Assisted Recovery

Semantic integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is envisioned as a promising paradigm for efficient and intelligent connectivity in future wireless networks. However, the open wireless channel exposes the dual-functional waveform to detection, which challenges the joint guarantee of covertness, sensing fidelity, and semantic accuracy. To address the challenge, we propose CoSMIC, a novel covertness-oriented semantic ISAC framework, where the sensing output is embedded into a dual-functional ISAC waveform through semantic modulation. Specifically, a semantic rotation coding scheme is established to map semantic latents onto the pairwise rotation and scaling of Gaussian reference sequences, which satisfies a derived closed-form covertness constraint by a differentiable budget projection. Moreover, the radar performance is analyzed to confirm an invariant matched-filter mainlobe response and a bounded output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) under the semantic embedding. Subsequently, a reliability-guided rectified flow (RFlow) refiner is designed to effectively reconstruct high-fidelity semantic representations from coarse observations. Simulation results demonstrate that CoSMIC improves the semantic reconstruction quality by 18% over diffusion-based baseline schemes with substantially reduced inference latency under strict covertness constraints, which validates the applicability to practical ISAC scenarios. The source code and video demonstrations are available at https://github.com/LanceAnlan/CoSMIC-covertness-oriented-semantic-ISAC-framework.

A Covert Precision Satellite Communication Framework Assisted by Cooperative IRSs

Satellite communication (SatCom), as an effective complement to terrestrial networks, has attracted considerable attention from both academia and industry owing to its wide coverage and high flexibility. However, the inherent openness of satellite links renders them highly vulnerable to eavesdropping, thereby posing significant security challenges. In this paper, we propose a satellite covert precision wireless communication (CPWC) system, where multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) cooperate to assist satellite transmissions, ensuring that confidential information is delivered to legitimate users while remaining undetectable to wardens. To further enhance covertness, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based random subcarrier selection (RSCS) method is developed to concentrate the signal energy at the intended receiver. Under a practical satellite-terrestrial channel model, we derive closed-form covertness constraints for the CPWC system based on relative entropy and detection error probability. Under the relative-entropy constraint and the satellite power constraint, we maximize the covert rate by an alternating-optimization (AO) based semidefinite relaxation (SDR) iterative algorithm and obtain a high-quality feasible solution. Using this solution as a warm start, we further impose the detection-error-probability constraint and refine the beamformer through a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) based algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed CPWC system, where the detection-error-probability-based scheme outperforms the second-order cone programming (SOCP) benchmark, the random-phase-shift design, the one-bit IRS quantized scheme, and the SDR baseline without precise communication (PC) in terms of covert rate.

Enhanced Direction-Sensing Methods and Performance Analysis in Low-Altitude Wireless Network via a Rotating Antenna Array

Due to the directive property of each antenna element, the received signal power can be severely attenuated when the emitter deviates from the array boresight, which will lead to a severe degradation in sensing performance along the corresponding direction. Although existing rotatable array sensing methods such as recursive rotation (RR-Root-MUSIC) can mitigate this issue by iteratively rotating and sensing, several mechanical rotations and repeated eigendecomposition operations are required to yield a high computational complexity and low time-efficiency. To address this problem, a pre-rotation initialization with recieve power as a rule is proposed to signifcantly reduce the computational complexity and improve the time-efficiency. Using this idea, a low-complexity enhanced direction-sensing framework with pre-rotation initialization and iterative greedy spatial-spectrum search (PRI-IGSS) is develped with three stages: (1) the normal vector of array is rotated to a set of candidates to find the opimal direction with the maximum sensing energy with the corresponding DOA value computed by the Root-MUSIC algorithm; (2) the array is mechanically rotated to the initial estimated direction and kept fixed; (3) an iterative greedy spatial-spectrum search or recieving beamforming method, moviated by reinforcement learning, is designed with a reduced search range and making a summation of all previous sampling variance matrices and the current one is adopted to provide an increasiong performance gain as the iteration process continues. To assess the performance of the proposed method, the corresponding CRLB is derived with a simplified rotation model. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PRI-IGSS method performs much better than RR-Root-MUSIC and achieves the CRLB in term of mean squared error due to the fact there is no sample accumulation for the latter.

Rotatable Antenna-array-enhanced Direction-sensing for Low-altitude Communication Network: Method and Performance

In a practical multi-antenna receiver, each element of the receive antenna array has a directive antenna pattern, which is still not fully explored and investigated in academia and industry until now. When the emitter is deviated greatly from the normal direction of antenna element or is close to the null-point direction, the sensing energy by array will be seriously attenuated such that the direction-sensing performance is degraded significantly. To address such an issue, a rotatable array system is established with the directive antenna pattern of each element taken into account, where each element has the same antenna pattern. Then, the corresponding the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived. Finally, a recursive rotation Root-MUSIC (RR-Root-MUSIC) direction-sensing method is proposed and its root-mean-squared-error (RMSE) performance is evaluated by the derived CRLB. Simulation results show that the proposed rotation method converges rapidly with about ten iterations, and make a significant enhancement on the direction-sensing accuracy in terms of RMSE when the target direction departs seriously far away from the normal vector of array. Compared with conventional Root-MUSIC, the sensing performance of the proposed RR-Root-MUSIC method is much closer to the CRLB.

Reinforcement Learning-Based Secure Near-field Directional Modulation Enhanced by Rotatable RIS

This paper investigates secure Directional Modulation (DM) design enhanced by a rotatable active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). In conventional RIS-assisted DM networks, the security performance gain is limited due to the multiplicative path loss introduced by the RIS reflection path. To address this challenge, a Secrecy Rate (SR) maximization problem is formulated, subject to constraints including the eavesdropper's Direction Of Arrival (DOA) estimation performance, transmit power, rotatable range, and maximum reflection amplitude of the RIS elements. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, three algorithms are proposed: a multi-stream null-space projection and leakage-based method, an enhanced leakage-based method, and an optimization scheme based on the Distributed Soft Actor-Critic with Three refinements (DSAC-T). Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. A performance trade-off is observed between eavesdropper's DOA estimation accuracy and the achievable SR. The security enhancement provided by the RIS is more significant in systems equipped with a small number of antennas. By optimizing the orientation of the RIS, a 52.6\% improvement in SR performance can be achieved.

Low-Latency Federated Fine-Tuning for Large Language Models Over Wireless Networks

Recently, federated large language models (LLMs) have drawn significant attention thanks to coupled capabilities of LLMs and federated learning (FL) that address privacy concerns in collaborative fine-tuning. However, due to large-scale parameters of LLMs, existing federated LLM fine-tuning frameworks incur significant challenges in resource-constrained clients characterized by heterogeneous computing capabilities and random wireless channels. To address this issue, we propose a joint client-specific pruning and bandwidth allocation (JCPBA) framework for federated LLMs to improve the fine-tuning efficiency over the wireless networks. Specifically, we formulate a fine-tuning latency minimization problem by jointly optimizing pruning rates and bandwidth allocations. Furthermore, we solve this optimization problem using a block coordinate descent method. Extensive experiments on the datasets of Yahoo Answers and GSM8K demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly reduces wall-clock fine-tuning time compared with state-of-the-art baselines and gains equal or lower test loss at the cost of lower computation and communication overhead.

Which Channel in 6G, Low-rank or Full-rank, more needs RIS from a Perspective of DoF?

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), as an efficient tool to improve receive signal-to-noise ratio, extend coverage and create more spatial diversity, is viewed as a most promising technique for the future wireless networks like 6G. As you know, RIS is very suitable for a special wireless scenario with wireless link between BS and users being completely blocked, i.e., no link. In this paper, we extend its applications to a general scenario, i.e., rank-deficient channel, particularly some extremely low-rank ones such as no link, and line-of-sight (LoS, rank-one). Actually, there are several potential important low-rank applications like low-altitude, satellite, UAV, marine, and deep-space communications. In such a situation, it is found that RIS may make a dramatic degrees of freedom (DoF) enhancement over no RIS. By using a distributed RISs placement, the DoF of channel from BS to user in LoS channel may be even boosted from a low-rank like 0/1 to full-rank. This will achieve an extremely rate improvement via spatial parallel multiple-stream transmission from BS to user. In this paper, we present a complete review of making an in-depth discussion on DoF effect of RIS.
