Deterministic photon waveform adaptation for quantum connectivity

The scalability of quantum technologies will depend on the ability to interconnect independent quantum systems through photonic channels. However, heterogeneous quantum platforms emit and absorb photons with widely differing properties, severely limiting inter-node interference and modular connectivity. Here we demonstrate a cold-atom optical quantum memory that simultaneously achieves near-unity storage-and-retrieval efficiency and deterministic temporal adaptation of single photons between arbitrary and programmable input and output pulse waveforms. Operating at high optical depth and within a fully integrated architecture, the system can store photons with durations spanning over three orders of magnitude and reshape them arbitrarily without compromising efficiency, achieving compatibility with many current platforms. By augmenting the role of a quantum memory from a passive storage element to an active programmable photonic interface, our results establish a key building block for scalable entanglement-based quantum networks and modular quantum computing architectures.

Squeezing oscillations in a multimode bosonic Josephson junction

Quantum simulators built from ultracold atoms promise to study quantum phenomena in interacting many-body systems. However, it remains a challenge to experimentally prepare strongly correlated continuous systems such that the properties are dominated by quantum fluctuations. Here, we show how to enhance the quantum correlations in a one-dimensional multimode bosonic Josephson junction, which is a quantum simulator of the sine-Gordon field theory. Our approach is based on the ability to track the non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum properties. After creating a bosonic Josephson junction at the stable fixed point of the classical phase space, we observe squeezing oscillations in the two conjugate variables. We show that the squeezing oscillation frequency can be tuned by more than one order of magnitude, and we are able to achieve a spin squeezing close to 10 dB by utilising these oscillatory dynamics. The impact of improved spin squeezing is directly revealed by detecting enhanced spatial phase correlations between decoupled condensates. Our work provides new ways for engineering correlations and entanglement in the external degree of freedom of interacting many-body systems.

Observation of Light-Induced Dipole-Dipole Forces in Ultracold Atomic Gases

We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms. This collective, light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting features: it exhibits nonlocal properties, is attractive for both red and blue-detuned light fields and induces a remarkably strong force that depends on the gradient of the atomic density. The experimental data are discussed in the framework of a theoretical model based on a local-field approach for the light scattered by the atomic cloud.
