The five-vertex model as a discrete log-gas

We consider the five-vertex model on a rectangular domain of the square lattice, with the so-called `scalar-product' boundary conditions. We address the evaluation of the free-energy density of the model in the scaling limit, that is when the number of sites is sent to infinity and the mesh of the lattice to zero, while keeping the size of the domain constant. To this aim, we reformulate the partition function of the model in terms of a discrete log-gas, and study its behaviour in the thermodynamic limit. We reproduce previous results, obtained by using a differential equation approach. Moreover, we provide the explicit form of the resolvent in all possible regimes. This work is preliminary to further studies of limit shape phenomena in the model.

Frozen-corner enumeration of Alternating Sign Matrices

An Alternating Sign Matrix (ASM) is a square matrix with entries in $\{0,1,-1\}$, and such that: $i)$ in each row and columns, nonzero entries alternate in sign; $ii)$ for any given row or column, entries sum up to $1$. We define the frozen-square enumeration as the enumeration of $n\times n$ ASMs under the refinement of having, located in a corner, an $s\times s$ square of entries that are all zeroes. We state a conjectural formula for such enumeration, in terms of the determinant of some $s\times s$ matrix whose entries are given explicitly. We provide numerical support in favour of our conjecture. We also illustrate the relevance of the conjectured formula in connection with the limit shape observed in large ASMs, its fluctuations, and the Tracy--Widom distribution.

Scaling limit of domino tilings on a pentagonal domain

We consider the six-vertex model at its free-fermion point with domain wall boundary conditions, which is equivalent to random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. We compute the scaling limit of a particular non-local correlation function, essentially equivalent to the partition function for the domino tilings of a pentagon-shaped domain, obtained by cutting away a triangular region from a corner of the initial Aztec diamond. We observe a third-order phase transition when the geometric parameters of the obtained pentagonal domain are tuned to have the fifth side exactly tangent to the arctic ellipse of the corresponding initial model.

Evaluation of integrals for the emptiness formation probability in the square-ice model

We study the emptiness formation probability (EFP) in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. We present a conjecture according to which at the ice point, i.e., when all the Boltzmann weights are equal, the known multiple integral representation (MIR) for the EFP can be given as a finite-size matrix determinant of Fredholm type. Our conjecture is based on the explicit evaluation of the MIR for particular values of geometric parameters and on two kinds of identities for the boundary correlation function. The obtained representation can be further written as the Fredholm determinant of some linear integral operator. We show that as the geometric parameters of the EFP are tuned to the vicinity of the arctic curve arising in the scaling limit, the conjectured determinant turns into the GUE Tracy--Widom distribution.

Six-vertex model on a finite lattice: integral representations for nonlocal correlation functions

We consider the problem of calculation of correlation functions in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. To this aim, we formulate the model as a scalar product of off-shell Bethe states, and, by applying the quantum inverse scattering method, we derive three different integral representations for these states. By suitably combining such representations, and using certain antisymmetrization relation in two sets of variables, it is possible to derive integral representations for various correlation functions. In particular, focusing on the emptiness formation probability, besides reproducing the known result, obtained by other means elsewhere, we provide a new one. By construction, the two representations differ in the number of integrations and their equivalence is related to a hierarchy of highly nontrivial identities.

Integral formulas and antisymmetrization relations for the six-vertex model

We study the relationship between various integral formulas for nonlocal correlation functions of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. Specifically, we show how the known representation for the emptiness formation probability can be derived from that for the so-called row configuration probability. A crucial ingredient in the proof is a relation expressing the result of antisymmetrization of some given function with respect to permutations in two sets of its variables in terms of the Izergin-Korepin partition function. This relation generalizes another one obtained by Tracy and Widom in the context of the asymmetric simple exclusion process.

Arctic curve of the free-fermion six-vertex model in an L-shaped domain

We consider the six-vertex model in an L-shaped domain of the square lattice, with domain wall boundary conditions, in the case of free-fermion vertex weights. We describe how the recently developed `Tangent method' can be used to determine the form of the arctic curve. The obtained result is in agreement with numerics.

Generalized emptiness formation probability in the six-vertex model

In the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions, the emptiness formation probability is the probability that a rectangular region in the top left corner of the lattice is frozen. We generalize this notion to the case where the frozen region has the shape of a generic Young diagram. We derive here a multiple integral representation for this correlation function.

Arctic curves of the six-vertex model on generic domains: the Tangent Method

We revisit the problem of determining the Arctic curve in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. We describe an alternative method, by which we recover the previously conjectured analytic expression in the square domain. We adapt the method to work for a large class of domains, and for other models exhibiting limit shape phenomena. We study in detail some examples, and derive, in particular, the Arctic curve of the six-vertex model in a triangoloid domain at the ice-point.

Thermodynamics of the six-vertex model in an L-shaped domain

We consider the six-vertex model in an L-shaped domain of the square lattice, with domain wall boundary conditions. For free-fermion vertex weights the partition function can be expressed in terms of some Hankel determinant, or equivalently as a Coulomb gas with discrete measure and a non-polynomial potential with two hard walls. We use Coulomb gas methods to study the partition function in the thermodynamic limit. We obtain the free energy of the six-vertex model as a function of the parameters describing the geometry of the scaled L-shaped domain. Under variations of these parameters the system undergoes a third-order phase transition. The result can also be considered in the context of dimer models, for the perfect matchings of the Aztec diamond graph with a cut-off corner.

When finite-size corrections vanish: The S=1/2 XXZ model and the Razumov-Stroganov state

We study the one-dimensional $S=1/2$ XXZ model on a finite lattice at zero temperature, varying the exchange anisotropy $\Delta$ and the number of sites $N$ of the lattice. Special emphasis is given to the model with $\Delta=1/2$ and $N$ odd, whose ground state, the so-called Razumov-Stroganov state, has a peculiar structure and no finite-size corrections to the energy per site. We find that such model corresponds to a special point on the $\Delta$-axis which separates the region where adding spin-pairs increases the energy per site from that where the longer the chain the lower the energy. Entanglement properties do not hold surprises for $\Delta=1/2$ and $N$ odd. Finite-size corrections to the energy per site non trivially vanish also in the ferromagnetic $\Delta\to -1^+$ isotropic limit, which is consequently addressed; in this case, peculiar features of some entanglement properties, due to the finite length of the chain and related with the change in the symmetry of the Hamiltonian, are evidenced and discussed. In both the above models the absence of finite-size corrections to the energy per site is related to a peculiar structure of the ground state, which has permitted us to provide new exact analytic expressions for some correlation functions.

On the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions

The six-vertex model on an $N\times N$ square lattice with domain wall boundary conditions is considered. A Fredholm determinant representation for the partition function of the model is given. The kernel of the corresponding integral operator is of the so-called integrable type, and involves classical orthogonal polynomials. From this representation, a ``reconstruction'' formula is proposed, which expresses the partition function as the trace of a suitably chosen quantum operator, in the spirit of corner transfer matrix and vertex operator approaches to integrable spin models.

Area versus Length Distribution for Closed Random Walks

Using a connection between the $q$-oscillator algebra and the coefficients of the high temperature expansion of the frustrated Gaussian spin model, we derive an exact formula for the number of closed random walks of given length and area, on a hypercubic lattice, in the limit of infinite number of dimensions. The formula is investigated in detail, and asymptotic behaviours are evaluated. The area distribution in the limit of long loops is computed. As a byproduct, we obtain also an infinite set of new, nontrivial identities.

Solving the Frustrated Spherical Model with q-Polynomials

We analyse the Spherical Model with frustration induced by an external gauge field. In infinite dimensions, this has been recently mapped onto a problem of q-deformed oscillators, whose real parameter q measures the frustration. We find the analytic solution of this model by suitably representing the q-oscillator algebra with q-Hermite polynomials. We also present a related Matrix Model which possesses the same diagrammatic expansion in the planar approximation. Its interaction potential is oscillating at infinity with period log(q), and may lead to interesting metastability phenomena beyond the planar approximation. The Spherical Model is similarly q-periodic, but does not exhibit such phenomena: actually its low-temperature phase is not glassy and depends smoothly on q.
