Noise-induced periodicity in a frustrated network of interacting diffusions

We investigate the emergence of a collective periodic behavior in a frustrated network of interacting diffusions. Particles are divided into two communities depending on their mutual couplings. On the one hand, both intra-population interactions are positive; each particle wants to conform to the average position of the particles in its own community. On the other hand, inter-population interactions have different signs: the particles of one population want to conform to the average position of the particles of the other community, while the particles in the latter want to do the opposite. We show that this system features the phenomenon of noise-induced periodicity: in the infinite volume limit, in a certain range of interaction strengths, although the system has no periodic behavior in the zero-noise limit, a moderate amount of noise may generate an attractive periodic law.

The GHS and other correlation inequalities for the two-star model

We consider the two-star model, a family of exponential random graphs indexed by two real parameters, $h$ and $\alpha$, that rule respectively the total number of edges and the mutual dependence between them. Borrowing tools from statistical mechanics, we study different classes of correlation inequalities for edges, that naturally emerge while taking the partial derivatives of the (finite size) free energy. In particular, if $\alpha, h\ge 0$, we derive first and second order correlation inequalities and then prove the so-called GHS inequality. As a consequence, under the above conditions on the parameters, the average edge density turns out to be an increasing and concave function of the parameter $h$, at any fixed size of the graph. Some of our results can be extended to more general classes of exponential random graphs.

Limit theorems for exponential random graphs

We consider the edge-triangle model, a two-parameter family of exponential random graphs in which dependence between edges is introduced through triangles. In the so-called replica symmetric regime, the limiting free energy exists together with a complete characterization of the phase diagram of the model. We borrow tools from statistical mechanics to obtain limit theorems for the edge density. First, we investigate the asymptotic distribution of this quantity, as the graph size tends to infinity, in the various phases, and we complement this analysis with a study of the speed of convergence of the average edge density toward its limiting value. Then, we study the fluctuations of the edge density around its average value off the critical curve and formulate conjectures about the behavior at criticality based on the analysis of a mean-field approximation of the model. Some of our results can be extended with no substantial changes to more general classes of exponential random graphs.

Completely Random Measures and L\'evy Bases in Free probability

This paper develops a theory for completely random measures in the framework of free probability. A general existence result for free completely random measures is established, and in analogy to the classical work of Kingman it is proved that such random measures can be decomposed into the sum of a purely atomic part and a (freely) infinitely divisible part. The latter part (termed a free L\'evy basis) is studied in detail in terms of the free L\'evy-Khintchine representation and a theory parallel to the classical work of Rajput and Rosinski is developed. Finally a L\'evy-It\^o type decomposition for general free L\'evy bases is established.

Effects of local fields in a dissipative Curie-Weiss model: Bautin bifurcation and large self-sustained oscillations

We modify the spin-flip dynamics of a Curie-Weiss model with dissipative interaction potential (Dai Pra, Fischer and Regoli (2013)) by adding a site-dependent i.i.d. random magnetic field. The purpose is to analyze how the addition of the field affects the time-evolution of the observables in the macroscopic limit. Our main result shows that a Bautin bifurcation point exists and that, whenever the field intensity is sufficiently strong and the temperature sufficiently low, a periodic orbit emerges through a global bifurcation in the phase space, giving origin to a large-amplitude rhythmic behavior.

Path-space moderate deviations for a class of Curie-Weiss models with dissipation

We modify the Glauber dynamics of the Curie-Weiss model with dissipation in Dai Pra, Fischer, Regoli[2013] by considering arbitrary transition rates and we analyze the phase-portrait as well as the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for macroscopic observables. We obtain path-space moderate deviation principles via a general analytic approach based on the convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase we are considering and, moreover, their behavior may be influenced by the choice of the rates.

Path-space moderate deviations for a Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality

The dynamical Curie-Weiss model of self-organized criticality (SOC) was introduced in \cite{Gor17} and it is derived from the classical generalized Curie-Weiss by imposing a microscopic Markovian evolution having the distribution of the Curie-Weiss model of SOC [Cerf, Gorny 2016] as unique invariant measure. In the case of Gaussian single-spin distribution, we analyze the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for the magnetization. We obtain a path-space moderate deviation principle via a general analytic approach based on convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Our result shows that, under a peculiar moderate space-time scaling and without tuning external parameters, the typical behavior of the magnetization is critical.

Path-space moderate deviation principles for the random field Curie-Weiss model

We analyze the dynamics of moderate fluctuations for macroscopic observables of the random field Curie Weiss model (i.e., standard Curie-Weiss model embedded in a site dependent, i.i.d. random environment). We obtain path space large deviation principles via a general analytic approach based on convergence of non-linear generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase we consider and moreover, the space-time scale range for which fluctuations can be proven is restricted by the addition of the disorder.

Dynamical moderate deviations for the Curie-Weiss model

We derive moderate deviation principles for the trajectory of the empirical magnetization of the standard Curie-Weiss model via a general analytic approach based on convergence of generators and uniqueness of viscosity solutions for associated Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The moderate asymptotics depend crucially on the phase under consideration.

Rhythmic behavior in a two-population mean field Ising model

Many real systems comprised of a large number of interacting components, as for instance neural networks , may exhibit collective periodic behavior even though single components have no natural tendency to behave periodically. Macroscopic oscillations are indeed one of the most common self-organized behavior observed in living systems. In the present paper we study some dynamical features of a two-population generalization of the mean field Ising model with the scope of investigating simple mechanisms capable to generate rhythm in large groups of interacting individuals. We show that the system may undergo a transition from a disordered phase, where the magnetization of each population fluctuates closely around zero, to a phase in which they both display a macroscopic regular rhythm. In particular, there exists a region in the parameter space where having two groups of spins with inter- and intra-population interactions of different strengths suffices for the emergence of a robust periodic behavior.

Synchronization and spin-flop transitions for a mean-field XY model in random field

We characterize the phase space for the infinite volume limit of a ferromagnetic mean-field XY model in a random field pointing in one direction with two symmetric values. We determine the stationary solutions and detect possible phase transitions in the interaction strength for fixed random field intensity. We show that at low temperature magnetic ordering appears perpendicularly to the field. The latter situation corresponds to a spin-flop transition.

Collective periodicity in mean-field models of cooperative behavior

We propose a way to break symmetry in stochastic dynamics by introducing a dissipation term. We show in a specific mean-field model, that if the reversible model undergoes a phase transition of ferromagnetic type, then its dissipative counterpart exhibits periodic orbits in the thermodynamic limit.

Merging exchangeable occupancy models: $\mathcal{M}^{(a)}$- models and relation with the maximum entropy principle

In this paper a new transformation of occupancy models, called merging, is introduced. In particular, it will be studied the effect of merging on a class of occupancy models that was recently introduced in Collet et al (2013). These results have an interesting interpretation in the so-called entropy maximization inference. The last part of the paper is devoted to highlight the impact of our findings in this research area.

Macroscopic limit of a bipartite Curie-Weiss model: a dynamical approach

We analyze the Glauber dynamics for a bi-populated Curie-Weiss model. We obtain the limiting behavior of the empirical averages in the limit of infinitely many particles. We then characterize the phase space of the model in absence of magnetic field and we show that several phase transitions in the inter-groups interaction strength occur.

Exchangeable Occupancy Models and Discrete Processes with the Generalized Uniform Order Statistics Property

This work focuses on Exchangeable Occupancy Models (EOM) and their relations with the Uniform Order Statistics Property (UOSP) for point processes in discrete time. As our main purpose, we show how definitions and results presented in Shaked, Spizzichino and Suter (2004) can be unified and generalized in the frame of occupancy models. We first show some general facts about EOM's. Then we introduce a class of EOM's, called $\mathcal{M}^{(a)}$-models, and a concept of generalized Uniform Order Statistics Property in discrete time. For processes with this property, we prove a general characterization result in terms of $\mathcal{M}^{(a)}$-models. Our interest is also focused on properties of closure w.r.t. some natural transformations of EOM's.

The role of disorder in the dynamics of critical fluctuations of mean field models

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the disorder affects the dynamics of critical fluctuations for two different types of interacting particle system: the Curie-Weiss and Kuramoto model. The models under consideration are a collection of spins and rotators respectively. They both are subject to a mean field interaction and embedded in a site-dependent, i.i.d. random environment. As the number of particles goes to infinity their limiting dynamics become deterministic and exhibit phase transition. The main result concern the fluctuations around this deterministic limit at the critical point in the thermodynamic limit. From a qualitative point of view, it indicates that when disorder is added spin and rotator systems belong to two different classes of universality, which is not the case for the homogeneous models (i.e., without disorder).
