Mixed-State Topology in One-Dimensional Open Floquet Systems

We investigate the non-equilibrium topology of the steady state of a periodically driven, dissipative Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain using the ensemble geometric phase (EGP) $ϕ_{\mathrm{EGP}}$, a generalisation of the Zak phase to mixed states. The coupling to thermal reservoirs is treated microscopically within Floquet-Born-Markov theory without the rotating-wave approximation. We classify the steady state rather than the generator of the dynamics, using its purity spectrum as the analogue of a band structure. We show that, within the EGP framework, the $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ structure of isolated chiral-symmetric Floquet SSH systems generally does not carry over to the steady state. Instead, the steady state carries a single invariant whose type is set by an underlying symmetry. When this symmetry holds, the invariant is $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued, with quantised $ϕ_{\mathrm{EGP}}=\pmπ/2$ at all times and finite temperatures. The EGP can switch within a driving period, tracking the presence of edge modes in the open-boundary purity spectrum and thereby establishing a bulk-boundary correspondence. The fraction of each period spent in the nontrivial regime varies continuously with the driving frequency, and the switching disappears if the dependence of the dissipator on the drive is neglected. When the symmetry is broken, $ϕ_{\mathrm{EGP}}$ is no longer quantised, but its winding over a drive period $T$ defines an invariant $ν_T \in \mathbb Z$, with no purity-spectrum bulk-boundary correspondence. We propose that its changes signal temperature- and frequency-driven topological phase transitions. Our formalism extends to general quadratic fermionic systems with linear bath couplings.

Effective (Floquet) Lindblad generators from spectral unwinding

A mathematical description of the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system can often be given in terms of a completely positive and trace preserving (CPTP) map, also known as quantum channel. In a seminal work by Wolf et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 150402 (2008)], it was shown that deciding whether a given quantum channel was generated from an underlying effective Markovian dynamics, with time-independent generator of Lindblad form, is generally an NP-hard problem. The difficulty is related to the fact that one has to search through all possible branches of the operator logarithm of the map, in order to identify, if any of the resulting effective generators is of Lindblad form. In this work we show that in cases where one has access to the full reduced dynamics at all previous times (the dynamical map) one can significantly facilitate the search for an effective generator by making use of Floquet theory. By performing a spectral unwinding such that the effective micromotion is minimized, the effective Floquet generator is often an excellent candidate for an effective generator of Lindblad form. This significantly reduces the complexity of the search for an effective generator of Lindblad form in many (though not all) cases. Our results are relevant for engineering Floquet Lindbladians in complex many-body systems.
