The Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) for the production of overdense plasmas

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources are currently the most efficient ion sources among those used in facilities dedicated to nuclear physics. The need for a more flexible magnetic field and RF injection system suggested to design and develop a different type of plasma trap, named Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT). The magnetic field of FPT is generated by means of three coils while microwaves in the range 4-7 GHz can be injected by three different inputs, one placed along the axis and two placed radially. FPT can work in different plasma heating schemes so it will be an ideal tool for studies of plasma and multidisciplinary physics. Moreover, a microwave launcher has been designed and installed to the FPT for launching microwaves with a variable tilt angle with respect to the magnetic field. This paper describes the characteristics of the FPT along with the preliminary results of plasma diagnostics.

Numerical and Experimental Characterization of RF Waves Propagation in Ion Sources Magnetoplasmas

This paper describes three-dimensional numerical simulations and Radio Frequency (RF) measurements of wave propagation in microwave-heated magnetized plasmas of ion sources. Full-wave solution of Maxwell's equations has been addressed through the Finite Element Method (FEM) commercial software COMSOL. Our numerical model takes into account the strongly inhomogeneous and anisotropic magnetized "cold" plasma medium. The simulations reproduce the main features of the wave-plasma interaction of the Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) that recently came into operations at INFN-LNS. A two-pins RF probe has been ad-hoc developed and used as a plasmaimmersed antenna for measuring local wave electric fields in the FPT device. The measurements of plasma electron density and RF electric field, performed for different external magnetic field configuration, allowed a direct comparison with the assumed simulation model.

IsoDAR@KamLAND: A Conceptual Design Report for the Technical Facility

This conceptual design report describes the technical facility for the IsoDAR electron-antineutrino source at KamLAND. The IsoDAR source will allow an impressive program of neutrino oscillation and electroweak physics to be performed at KamLAND. This report provides information on the physics case, the conceptual design for the subsystems, alternative designs considered, specifics of installation at KamLAND, and identified needs for future development. We discuss the risks we have identified and our approach to mitigating those risks with this design. A substantial portion of the conceptual design is based on three years of experimental efforts and on industry experience. This report also includes information on the conventional facilities.

Sharp regularity for certain nilpotent group actions on the interval

According to the classical Plante-Thurston Theorem, all nilpotent groups of $C^2$-diffeomorphisms of the closed interval are Abelian. Using techniques coming from the works of Denjoy and Pixton, Farb and Franks constructed a faithful action by $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of $[0,1]$ for every finitely-generated, torsion-free, non-Abelian nilpotent group. In this work, we give a version of this construction that is sharp in what concerns the Hölder regularity of the derivatives. Half of the proof relies on results on random paths on Heisenberg-like groups that are interesting by themselves.

Simultaneous Surface Plasmon Resonance and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We present here an experimental set-up to perform simultaneously measurements of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a synchrotron beamline. The system allows measuring in situ and in real time the effect of X-ray irradiation on the SPR curves to explore the interaction of X-rays with matter. It is also possible to record XAS spectra while exciting SPR in order to detect the changes in the electronic configuration of thin films induced by the excitation of surface plasmons. Combined experiments recording simultaneously SPR and XAS curves while scanning different parameters can be carried out. The relative variations in the SPR and XAS spectra that can be detected with this set-up ranges from 10-3 to 10-5, depending on the particular experiment.

Does a Good Conservation of Jacobi's Constant Imply a Good Orbital Numerical Integration?: I. Resonant Orbits

In this paper we show two examples of numerical orbital integrations (Planar Circular Restricted Three Body Problem) in which even though the conservation of Jacobi's constant is near to 1 part in 10e8, the integration proves to be wrong. That is, for some particular cases the Jacobi's constant is insensitive to very important qualitative (not quantitative) changes in the integrated orbit which are produced by numerical errors. We provide specific recomendations to test and ensure that a numerical code is working properly, regardless the numerical method employed.
